New Years Ball

I don't know if you heard, but the ball that drops in Times Square every new year was energy efficient this year. It was twice as bright, but only used as much power as ten toasters. How do you think they did it? I'm thinking all LEDs. It was a neat thing for them to do, regardless. The following picture is from the Associated PressUPDATE: T3h_Muffinator looked it up on wikipedia. They switched to LEDs this year. Link

Team Ball Concept

Dear all, first of all, hello to all of you, I'm new to this site, but I've already seen some wonderful things on here, and they are a true inspiration source for the projects I'm working on during my study as an Industrial Designer.I've got a question about a concept of mine, which I will explain briefly to give you an understanding of what I'm trying to create:When playing a sport, let's take football (by which I mean soccer) there's a ball. My idea is to make the ball represent the ball possession (or actually the ball passing between players) of the teams. For instance, you have a blue and a red team, and what I want to do is make the ball color almost entirely blue if the blue team is in ball possession all the time. This way people will be more stimulated to play with eachother, passing the ball to eachother instead of scoring goals individually. The way I want the ball to change color, is by making it detect when it's being kicked, by a football shoe (which has to have some implemented technology as well). So everytime it's being passed from one player to another of the same team, the ball will color more blue or red. I need some help with the technology as I'm totally new to this aspect, 1. How to make the ball change colors? (LED's, or optical fiber: http://www.imtech.nl/SiteContent/EUPortal/Images/ImtechNV/newsroom/succes/17%20glasvezel.jpg, or any other suggestions?)2.How to make the ball communicate with the shoes? One thing I've been looking into is RFID - chips/reader, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaNnOHSJ-cQ, and then make the RFID-chips with a very limited range, so that only when the ball (with the reader) is close enough, the reader will detect the chip. But this seems like a last option, and I actually want something better. What I basically want is that when the shoe and the ball touch eachother, the coloring will happen. The requirements are that the shoes, must contain unique information so that the ball will know on what team that shoe is, another thing is that it can't be fragile, as the ball will be kicked by the shoe. Now as I'm fairly new to technology, I don't expect to build something with the best technology possible. As I have to write a final report, I will just present the technology idea in it. But it would be great if I could actually show an interactive prototype version of my concept. Therefore, if you have any suggestions, please write down the best possible way to create this, and a probably less perfect way that I can demonstrate (I'm willing to learn a lot over the next few weeks). Thanks in advance!

Ball Mill Help? Answered

I'm planing on constructing a ball mill out of pvc plumbing parts. So far I have two questions... ~I need some help with how to get a motor to use to drive it, that wouldn't require 'to much' wiring to set up. I was thinking about using a drill and mounting it some how. ~Second, I would like to know where I could get lead or other non-sparking media other than online. For example, I heard you could use lead fishing weights, if they sell this at a place like Dicks Sporting Goods could you please send me a product number? Thank You for your time

Inside PvC pipe, doesn't it have to have holes in it? To allow the escaping gas too expand into the second chamber.

Regular firearms work on a simular principle and size matters. 9 holes 1 inch apart, 4 lines of them. or make the inner tube out of screen. Mom & dad will love that one.

Will hardened lead antimony balls wear out quickly in a ball mill?

I've read that regular soft lead balls can wear out extremely quickly and contaminate mixtures in a ball mill, but what about these hardened lead antimony balls? I don't really fancy the idea of breathing in a lot of lead dust after a couple hours of milling. http://www.pyrocreations.com/inc/sdetail/11961 Would it be a good idea to get the lead balls from this website (found under "ball mills and media") for my ball mill (for making potentially explosive chemicals)? I've considered getting brass balls, but they are unbelievably expensive. I've also considered getting a brass bar and cutting it, but that's not cheap either and I don't know where to get a brass bar. Plus, apparently brass wears down quickly too, so it seems like a lot of trouble when I can just get lead balls, as long as they don't wear out too badly.

I am looking into creating a virtual reality experience controlled by something like the VirtuSphere (www.virtusphere.com).  I know there are giant hamster balls out there, but they are inflatable so I don't think they would be strong enough for what I want to create.  Also, solid balls would be waaay too expensive (like the BuzzBall or a Zorb).  Ideas?

Why was there plastic on my plasma ball? Answered

So I have had my plasma ball for about a year now and it wasn't very clear anymore.  At the top I noticed that there was some kind of coating on it after washing about 5 times with windex.  The ball worked fine were there wans't coating anymore so I rubbed it all off, it was plastic and now my hands are all sparkly.  Was that ok or am I risking major health problems.  Also, what is it for. So also, if your plasma ball is murky this is why.

Transparent plastic hemisphere? Answered

I've an idea for a project which will need a transparent plastic hemisphere, around 3" to 4" diameter, to house it. Any ideas where I could find something suitable? How can I make a small TV using a small LCD screen? Answered

I have a movie project idea that requires the use of a prop with one heck of a twist. Im trying to make a "Crystal Ball" that can project a movie from the inside of the ball, and I need to find some way to make it work without the necessary use of any tv or usb cables, even though it can use them. (Ex: in one shot, the actor is holding the ball, and is visible from head to his waist, but there are no cables running from the ball) So it could use video data from an SD card or a USB and also be used as a TV. The largest ball I can find is a 3" diameter clear plastic craft ball from a nearby hobby shop in a neighboring town. I guess what im asking in a nutshell is "how small can you make a diy projector?" Any help with this will be greatly appreciated!

Would this tennis ball mortar design work?

I was thinking about using 3 pringles cans. I'd cut the metal bottoms off of 2 of them and tape them together ontop of the third one, which still has the metal. Then I'd tape/glue a capacitor from a digital camera onto the tennis ball and charge it up. It would hit the bottom, create a spark, and ignite the fuel. Would this work?

How difficult is it to Increase the intensity of a plasma ball?

I just bought a cheap USB (5v) plasma ball. Quite frankly, the intensity of the streams is pathetic. You can barely see it when the lights are on. I wanted to use it for a decorative project, but need to increase the intensity of the streams. Would increasing the voltage (say from 5v to 12v) work? Or is it more complicated than that? I can do basic electronics, but mostly just simple stuff following circuit diagrams etc.

Ball counter or weight sensor with relay to sound alarm or trigger 9v confetti cannon

Anyone interested in a bit of work...I could also run it as a competition. Apologies in advance if what I am doing in not allowed on instructables, but I couldn't find a place to offer this work. Peoplehour does not specialise in tech gadgets! I am a one man band training business in the UK. I am trying to find someone to make this gadget to work with my Gravity Ball Game. Gravity Ball is a two hour team building activity. Gravity Ball requires teams to design and build a construction capable of transporting a ball from one zone to another; the ball must roll freely along the construction using gravity only. There will be a shared zone that will require team collaboration, cooperation and coordination. Everyone needs to contribute to the overall team objective whilst ensuring their own structure functions to a specific brief and works correctly. All teams will release their designated ball (tennis ball, golf ball, cricket ball, squash ball. Etc.) at the same time. Each team ball will roll freely along the team structure, into the shared area and the fall into a collection container. When all the balls are in the container (and a specific weight achieved) then the Weight sensitive relay switch will detonate a electronic confetti cannon. Alternatively, an infra red or sensor can count the number of balls that pass at a particular point and when the designated number is reached, the confetti cannon will detonate The detonation will give a wow factor to the team activity. Considerations: I need a gadget, Arduino, raspberry pi or beaglebone that can measure or count the number of ball and then detonate a confetti cannon or sound an alarm • Programmable weight or ball counter setting • Maximum weight 300g-400g or Maximum number of passing balls is 10 • Work with standard electronic confetti cannon from Confetti Masters, alarm or Siren (http://www.confettimaster.com/streamer.electric.confetti.cannons.html) or Showtec electric cannons (http://www.sblite.co.uk/598-80cm-multicolour-electric-confetti-cannon.html) Message me if you are interested! Kind regards Canute

A way to calculate something about a ferromagnetic ball in a magnetic field? Answered

I've built something like this https://www.instructables.com/id/Mechanical-Rail-Accelerator---Non-electromagnet-%22r/ and now I am thinking of calculating the kinetic energy of a ball flying off the magnet if it was 'set off' by a ball at some velocity. I have a great lot of problems: 1 The ball is about the same size as the magnet, which makes it impossible to say it is 'infinitely small'. 2 It is near the pole, so the magnetic field is not even (not like inside a coil). 3 The ball is ferromagnetic, so the field is going to be even more disrupted. 4 There is no Physics teacher this week. Maybe (I hope) there is a formula of potential energy of something like my ball in a magnetic field? Any ideas?

how many watts does my rock tumbler use?

I just bought a rock tumbler off ebay. the brand name is "chicago power tools". its a basic 3lb capasity rock tumbler/ lapidary rotary tool. now, because i live in australia, i have a problem, my power outlets produce 240v , and the rock tumbler can only take 120v, and so when i pluged it into a power adaptor (us-aus), the transformer gegan to work, then overheated and produced smoke, fortunately it still works . now, i am going to go and buy a stepdown transformer and have learnt that if the device is using more than 90% of what the transformer supplies, the transformer will overheat or break or something. now, on my tumbler, and everywhere a description for it is put, it mentions nothing on wattage consumption, and so i am asking , how many watts will it use so i may accordingly select a stepdown transformer for it.

Has anyone Hacked the," Nsd Power Ball Sm-01 Speedometer ?

Has anyone Hacked the," Nsd Power Ball Sm-01 Speedometer ? The Sm-01 ( the speedometer of Nsd power Ball ) Functions are: a. the count of revolutions ( hundred unit ) b. the current RPM c. the historical highest RPM/ the current highest RPM d. the physical index, 30 sec., 60 sec., 90 sec. The above-mentioned functions work individually. The speedometer can make users understand the use state of PB and provide real figures for reference. It combines the effects of rehabilitation, entertainment, and contest. Can anyone explain how this speedometer works. Is it Optical ? Since the Power Ball has 5 LED's incorporated in the Gyro Ball does this trigger the output ? Or is it magnetic ? When I, place compass next to the Power Ball the compass dial spins like a motor. How can I, use this speedometer to registered the speed or RPM of wheel ? Looking forward to hearing any suggestions, on how I may HACK this Great Speedometer/ TACH . This speedometer can be found on eBay for about $15.00 it's small and compact. It surprises me that no one has Hacked this for other uses !

Simple nail and wire Electromagnet problem ! Answered

So I built a simple electromagnet out of a nail and wire, I hooked it up top power and a switch. What I need to do is to lift a small metal ball the size of a common marble with my electromagnet, when I press the switch ( momentary, when you press it, it shut off power and when you release it power get back) the ball should fall of it, but problem is, the ball stay magnetized to the nail !! The only solution I found up to now is to make the electromagnet just enough powerfull to hardly lift the ball, but I hate it because its a pain to get the ball to stick on and it often fall off randomly. Is there a way the ball could fall off every time I press the switch without reducing the strength of my electromagnet? Thank you !!
