I was bored and was looking around for some new themes and found this. It looks really good with my background and even better with the zune theme for firefox. I dunno, just thought I'd share it...

It seems today http://www.google.com/ turned it's lights out. I though it was an early April Fools but apparently its time for Earth Hour (which everyone should participate). My physics teacher has a black desktop background on his laptop to save battery life. I always tell his it doesn't work and that it might even do the opposite. We all know that for backlit displays this does not save any energy but does it waste energy? Anyone care to comment.PS. I admire Google for its Community service. I wish government was more like it.

I have discovered that it is a major pain dans la derriere to take a decent photograph of an object that is, really, a near-featureless shiny black box. The best I've come up with so far us to stand a candle inside. My camera is auto focusing, and it keeps locking on to the reflections in the shiny surface - I want to take photos of the object, not of me or the room around me. Any suggestions?

Hi, I'm trying to do a uni project and I'm not having much look at the moment. What I want is for the ink in the black cartridge to be a colour ink instead of black. It did seem to work but now it's not. I flushed the cartridge with water several times to clean it out and then placed magenta ink in and the first through prints it started to print the Magenta but then stopped and how all it seems to do is leak from the cartridge and flood the base. The printer is a HP 1220c using HP 45 Cartridge which has the print head on the actual cartridge. Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks Phil

Hello. Years ago, Letraset had in catalogue a color film that you heated over a black and white photocopy and turned black in the color of the film (the film only was fixed to the toner). Does anybody know a way of getting the same result with cheap materials?

Is there any way of connecting multiple fluorescent light bulbs *THIS* to 1 power plug....i'm a newb, so if this is pretty complicated, i'm gonna need some articles :) the reason i ask this is because i'm thinking about constructing a (full room) black light in it's own sweet casing. it would go around my whole room around the perimeter (around the upper edge, touching the ceiling) so ya...i have enough construction knowledge to build the casing and everything else, BUT i do not know hardly anything about electrical stuff...which is why i have you guys :) so ya...any help (or different solutions other than light bulbs) would be greatly appreciated. thanks :)

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can take clear plastic and totally black it out I am trying to create a shaped bokeh effect in a uv filter for a more permanent setting than cut out paper (what most people do). Now I bought quite a few for different shapes or if I mess up. Last night I printed out on sticker paper a heart and placed it in the center of the filter and used Krylon fusion (spray paint for plastic) on the filter. It took quite a few coats to get it so light never shined through. When It looked good I peeled of the heart sticker and half the paint went with it. An obvious failure. What im trying now is, I took that filter and scratched it up a bit and I found some super glue and just thinly spread some across the lens (to hopefully give the paint something to grip to) let that sit over night it was too late to paint. And today I am now putting a few coats on it and i plan to actually cut the heart shape out of the filter.

Hello again. It's time for another photo contest! This month the theme is a nice broad one, just to get things going after the first one last month. Black and White This months theme is Black and White. Try and focus on those distinctive shapes and defined shadows that make black and white photos pop. Get into the mindset of what will look good when in black and white. A good contrast is normally a good basis for a black and white photo. Any black and white photo is allowed, digital or analogue. Nearly all modern digital cameras have a black and white mode. The one stipulation is that you have to go and take a new photo! Not just upload an old photo. The idea is to encourage you to take some new pics, opposed to showing off what we have done before. Attached are a couple of shots I took today! Every black and white photo uploaded gets a Patch! If I missed giving you a patch last month, let me know in your comment, and I will send you one of each to make up.

I have three Black and Decker, 18volt battery chargers, for the FireStorm series tools. One is an orange dual charger. One is the single black charger that came with the drill. And one is the Radio charger. The radio charger AC adapter case melted and no longer works. The single and double chargers both seem to kill batteries, and do not charge. I have voltage coming from the chargers, but I don't remember how much. Does anyone know what the voltage should be on the charger? More importantly, how do I repair the charger to output the correct voltage/current?

I have a Dell 17-inch E173FP flat panel display monitor. Just after I visited a website, I left the room and returned to find that the monitor had gone black and that the on/off light was flashing every few seconds. Unplugged the monitor from the outlet, plugged it back in, but no change. Couldn't shut down my computer as a result and so I just had to turn it off manually. Any idea what's wrong with the monitor?

I am getting an old macbook pro in the mail soon and am going to have to pretty much tear it down completely to repair it. I have seen a few guides on anodizing aluminum, and was wondering if maybe, possibly I would be able to anodize my macbook to a different color! Would this require de-anodizing the aluminum? (the model is a late 08 macbook, so I dont know if that is a powder coated one). It would be awesome If I could color it a nice matte black (my preferred color) Has anyone attempted doing something like this before? I have some scrap brushed aluminum to practice on.. would that work? I know this could be easily accomplished with a black case... but I kind of want to go a bit further than that...

While I was watching a show on the Science Channel about Black holes, it mentioned that black holes send out spiraling waves of gravity. If we were hit with said wave, ( on the occasion we survive a black hole) that had traveled from a far distance, would everything become much heaver and everyone would fall over? Would we lose our moon? What would/could happen?

In my instructable about making an aluminum ring, I made two aluminum rings, one for my girlfriend and one for myself. Mine is still fine; however, hers keeps turning black (oxidizing). I understand this is because she is a girl and her skin pH is different than mine (more basic); but I am curious if there are any techniques on how to prevent this from happening. The ring needs to be polished using aluminum cleaner every other week, but if there was a way to keep its mirror finish, that would be fantastic. Thank you!

Hi, I’m experiencing problems with my LG Flatron Wide. The screen comes on with a very faded picture and then goes black. I assumed that maybe the capacitors (like for others) needed to be changed. However, I have opened the monitor and the caps look perfectly fine, no bulges or anything. Does anyone think I should just go ahead and try changing the caps anyway? Or could anything else be wrong? Thanks a lot.

(This is the first topic of the "failed experiments" group.)I was wondering if the black smoke of the candles could be electrically conductive (carbon) when deposited as a layer over a piece of glass. After a quick and basic experimentation, it seems it is not. Here is how I proceeded :- I've put a piece of glass over the flame of a candle so a black smoke deposit appear on its surface.- I did so that it becomes opaque (if you want to try, be careful that the piece of glass may break because of the heat)- then, I used two crocodile clamps to make the contact (I've put a certain depth of aluminum foil between the claws of the clamp and the piece of glass)- then, I tried to measure the resistance with a multimeter, but the multimeter displayed no value at all.

My calculator has these black lines (under all the buttons) that are very close but not touching in wavy designs right on the PCB. How do these buttons work? Is there a way I hook up a SMT push button to this? Like I mentioned before, both my calculators have these black traces. Is this a covering over the copper? How would I get to the actual copper? Do I try to sand off the black? Thanks!

During a recent freeze, I cut the power to my desktop. Now every time I restart it, it comes up with a black screen with a perfectly operational cursor that receives input from my mouse and tablet and nothing else. I read that it is because no processes are running. Now is there anything that I can do to fix this that doesn't involve me reinstalling Windows? It gives me an option to run it in a crippled "safe mode", so I can access my files.

I bought a spool of 14 gauge aluminum wire for chain maille. My goal is to have alternating black and natural colored rings used for the maille. In a household metal working book I found from the 80's, they said to,"Mix 2 tablespoons lye into 1 quart cold water. Add aluminum part for 1-2 minutes. Submerse part into household dye mixed according to manufacturers directions until desired depth of color is achieved. Rinse in cold water".I tried this method using RIT black household dye; however, it was not successful. I am trying to dye the wire both RED and BLACK. If no method for the red is found, I can purchase a short length of anodized red wire; however, If there are any chemical reactions for turning the wire black, that would be great. Thanks!!
