Brushless Motors

I have a few fans around from computers. Seems that 3 wires is pretty common for these. I wasn't sure which was what, so, I figured "nothin to lose" and hooked up the right voltage across 2 wires. My guess was right. It ran. But, having 1 out of 9 fanblades busted off, it shook a bit. So, I busted off 2 more blades to balance it. But now, even connecting it the same way, it doesn't run. So, how should a 3 wire brushless motor fan be wired?

How to use an external power supply instead of batteries with ESC and brushless motor? Answered

Hello, everybody, this is my first question here ! Recently I have made a remote controlling system for my friend's RC plane, the problem is we want to test it on the ground without batteries.. So, I told him we can use an external power supply that gives 12V, but we can't calculate the needed amperage(? A) ... We'll be using EMax 18A brushless motor + Emax 30A ESC , all of these are using 11.1V, so what and how can I calculate the needed specifications of the required power supply ? I wish you could help me, and thanx :)

How do I choose proper power supply for my ESC Answered

Hi, I am very new to this, I apologize if my question is too stupid :) I bought a brushless motor: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FTX5S0E (I can't find proper specifications, so I am not sure what is the voltage for this, but somewhere on the internets it was mentioned that this model needs 11.1Voltage, and 15-25A or 30A max. (not sure how to check if that's accurate, the motor is RS 2212-920kv) I also bought an ESC (I hope it's correct one...) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016KF0E2W/ it says 30A on it. So seems legit to me. Usually they power this setup with batteries. but I want to use a power supply to power this from 220v outlet. I have some power supplies at home rated 2A, which I am sure is not enough. so I assume I need to get a 12v 30A power supply.  I am afraid though that my assumptions will get me to burn my ESC, which will cause another month of waiting for new one. Would really appreciate some help. What power supply do I need? how many volts my motor requires? should I provide 30A? does this kind of supplies even exist?  Thanks!

Speed controller for brushless electric bike motor? Answered

I have obtained a 400W 24V 2800RPM Monophase BLDC motor with related power supply and a 24V 40A-rated pulse width modulator unit, however from what i understand the PWM won't give me full control (if any at all) of the actual speed of a BLDC motor. I want my motor's torque to remain relatively intact and for it to cover a range of about 50-300 RPM, with no need for exact control. Are my only choices to build a pulley mechanism or to buy a mechanical gearbox? I'd like to control my motor electronically.

What would be an appropriate diode for a motor driver? Answered

I'm currently building a brushless motor driver, and need to get some diodes to go accross the MOSFETs to prevent the reverse current going through them. The absolute maximum forward voltage through the motor is 15V, at 25A, so do the diodes also need to withstand this, or can lower ratings, such as 10A be used. Thanks in advance.

how is ac current generated? Answered

Ok, so I was under the impression that brushless motors were AC motors (and therefore conducted AC current), until recent internet searches proved me wrong. What fan can I replace this one with?

I've just took apart my noisy micro refrigerator, it's an insulin cooler that keeps medicine at a temperature of 2-8 degrees celsius. It's good apart from the noisy fans. Now I was confused when I took it apart as I'd never heard of a DC brushless fan before. So I'm now wondering what can I replace it with? Can I replace it with a standard fan that's the same size as it? Or do I have to replace it with another DC brushless fan of the same specs? I want to find a near silent replacement, will this be possible? Is it the fan that actually makes the noise? Here's a few pics of the fan and motherboard: http://oi61.tinypic.com/o8ij52.jpg http://oi62.tinypic.com/14dezqx.jpg Thanks, really appreciate any help.

What choice of motor for a robot

Hello, I'm making researches about electric motors, I know very little about them and it seems to be a vast world. I don't have any detailled project yet, but I'd like to make a small robot that would be capable to move, that implies using electric motors. Forums have many useful data about them, but what it lacks is precise user reviews: what type of motor would you use the most, and why? Is it simpler to use servomotors over DC, or brushless? Prics must be a criteria of choice, but can I found cheap motors with good performance? Thank you very much for your help

Motors for Quadcopters

Hi, I am looking to make a quadcopter as my university project and I kinda run in to some problems deciding which motor I need to choose. I was thinking to choose brushless motors as they are more efficient and they give more RPM. HOwever, my professor says that there's no point using brushless/stepper motors as u can get the same RPMs using brushed motors and its the same thing. Hence, can anyone please guide me which motor is best to use and why should I use brushed or brushless motors. I shall be very glad if someone guide me through it. Thank you :)

dc to dc step up converter for 22v 6 cell lipo to get to 44 volt , need advice

Im building a power harness for my hang glider, the project is very near completion, my brushless out runners require 44 to 48 volts. I am using two sets of 22v 6s in series, but the weight of two large 6s batteries banks is significant , what would be the potential to create this step up converter and what are the down side of designing dc to dc step up converter into my power system. My hope to eliminate the in series battery ( double battery  weight ) set up.  I suspect loss of amps or total run time ? what about problems with electronics  heat in the circuit, issues with ticky speed controllers, or the out runners , how will they be effected , or will these components work normally in a step up voltage / current  as compared  batteries in series. ( which is working beautifully ) I guess volts are volts, it just sounds to good to be true , double volts and less battery weight Any and all qualified opinion and advice is appreciated.  Thanks Jeff

Pulley set for a 150rpm motor (small rc car project)?

Hey, I'm building a a car for a small competition in  my university (really small, like 3 teams) The motor they are providing for the car is a small dc motor, 6v, 1.7A and 150 RPM (there's no info about the torque). We have access to a 3D printer and wanted to print 2 pulleys to decrease the speed and gain strength (so the car can move), but I have no idea on what pulley size to use, what rpm should we aim? I know that without torque there's not much to say without testing, but any of you have at least a reference? thanks!

Can any brushless outrunner motor be used as a gimbal stabilization motor?

From looking at the construction of the gimbal motors, they do not appear to be much different than a standard brushless motor. However, they are able to be controlled like servo's, and I do not understand how. Does anyone have experience at these? I do not understand how a motor ment to spin fast with lowish torque, (high KV, as some may call that, or think of that) can be used to precisely control position, other than downwearing and feedback control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEWLrnYxLl0 Here is a video showing what I mean. Notice how slow that motor turns without gears? and I know they must have a lot of torque to be stabilizing a hefty camera.

Use brushless DC motor (or stepper motor) as RPM sensor?

Hi all, I'm making an Arduino based digital instrument cluster for my 1980 XS400 motorcycle. all the old tach and speedo instruments are mechanical so I need to convert the spinning cable's rotation to digital RPM. I've tried IR tachs but I can't seem to get them to be accurate enough (the lowest RPM I could get out of them was about 375, which isn't low enough) I'd love to use a more mechanical means of getting the RPM. could I use a 3 phase DC motor to count RPM? if I can, how?

How can I disassemble a dc brushless fan without breaking it? Answered

I've got a couple old fans from computer power supplies. I'm removing the plastic fan to get at the motor. The plastic casings have different designs, but the core seems to be the same. I remove the sticker and pop off this little plastic cover. I'm expecting to see some sort of bolt or screw holding the pieces together, but instead there looks to be some sort of metal rod with a white o-ring. I'm assuming that's the sleeve bearing, but I have no idea how to remove the plastic fan; other then pry it off or dremel. Any ideas?

Hello ... on the picture you can see a motor, that has 4 pins. I would like to make it run, but I don't know how. I don't know, if it's a brushless or brushed motor. There are no number, no part number ... and I think = I'm not sure, there is no magnet as well (I made a test with needle, but it didn't attract the needle). Question on wind turbine design

Are the poles on the top face of your magnets or at the ends? The former arrangement exists in circular disc magnets and the small bar mags used in brushless motors. You may find that you can get more coils in your motor by winding multiple winds around a piece of stiff plastic. Similarly with disc magnets, alternating N/S with a smaller gap between them you may have more magnets and more coils. Also in many hobby brushless motors, the gap between mags and coils is small, 1-2mm. Do you have the mag coil arrangement on both the top and bottom? I am assuming that you have centering bearings top and bottom, but do you have thrust bearings? These are cheap and are simply balls in a nylon ring at the cheapest end of the market. You would have to sandwich these between big washers or metal plate. I think if all of this was done, the efficiency and output would increase. Dave
