Hi :DMy old computer has died and I'm planning on just ripping it apart and salvaging bits and bobs for a new build, Here's my plan:CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Desktop Processor E8600Graphics card: GeForce 9800 GX2RAM: 4GBWiFi card: some brand, i haven't researched yetCase: Jeantech JNR-105 Luna ATXMy main problem is i cant decide on which Motherboard... do motherboards come with their own power supply? I think a 500 watt power supply would be more suited than the current 300 watt. which leads me to another question, can people recommend cooling options? (not water cooling though, i dont trust it enough to have hundreds of pounds of hardware surrounded by water)

Hi, my friends and I want to build a small yacht. We are beginners, so we dont have previous experiences in building such things. I just graduated with Mechanical Engineering degree from Polytechnic University of New York and my other friend is a handy man and he had experiences in fixing boats and yachts, another friend has experience in Mechanical Engineering design industry, he graduated couple years ago. We want to build it from scrap materials, we are thinking to get an old boat or yacht now and use that material to build our. I found this website http://www.hartley-boats.com/ may be you have an opinion on this web site. We are looking for any good advises for the beginners, any good literature on that topic. Another big problem we dont know where to build it. We are welcome enthusiasts like we are specially people who have some place to build it in our area (NYC, Long Island, New Jersey.)

I am wanting to build an Uninterrupted power supply. I was planning to use relays to connect and disconnect and the mains and battery power. N/O for the mains and N/C for the DC voltage. I wasn't sure if the relays would switch fast enough for the CPU to remain on. I loaded 2 pictures. Has anybody ever built something like this?

I have a 5sme22nj028a general electric motor and wanted to buld a generator. It is 10 pin (not including earth). I have used a voltmeter to see what generate but there are many combonations and they all seem to generate. Also it is brushless. I have posted this question before but fogort to include that the motor says varable speed on the side. I was thinking that connecting diffrent pins would make the motor go at diffrent speeds. In my other question someone said that it may need a mirco prosser before it. I think that this is probaly the case but wanted to see if anyone knew about this motor. So if it needs or doesnt need a micro prosessor before it, please tell me. I should be able to work it out from there. Thanks

So, in continuing my series of stupid newbie computer questions, I present: Building Your Own Computer!-The Computer-As you've heard, I first had a computer that messed up, then I took it to the computer dudes, and they said it was completely FUBAR, then I asked how I should salvage it. Now, after laying my eyes on the beautiful Linux-running $72 Computer, I said to myself that I should make one...-What I Have-I stripped my computer tonight, and I came up with a CD drive (doesn't burn, just reads), Floppy drive, hard drive, power supply (how the heck do I understand all those wires?), nice looking heatsink with matching fan, and various other parts from the Windows 98 computer. -The Problems--I checked the links provided at the link above, and the prices had either raised, the item is out of stock, or the item had vanished completely...-I would like to buy a minimum of parts because I am in debt with my parents, and being 13, I don't have a job to pay them off.-I would like to run Linux, as it is one of the coolest things I've found recently. -I do know that the link above is thumb-drive booted, and I would like to avoid that, but no biggie if I can't.-I also don't know that much about computers, so I want to keep the computer sweet and simple. -The components that I salvaged might not work with the new components (I.E. Motherboard)-Maybe more.-Pluses--It will be cheap.-Case mods should be easy.-Mistakes dont cost much.-Linux is free.-Linux looks very nice.-It shouldn't need much RAM to run (Am I correct here?), so I can run more complex programs without it costing me.-I have extra parts from the old Win98 computer that died.-Probably more, but this is all I got right now...First postSecond postI am saying this right now- I suck at understanding computers, and if possible, comment to me like you would your 93 year old grandpa.

So if anyone can give me some serious direction and helpful information on how to start and possible parts that would be great. Also could i just purchase an instruction manual for a kit and buy the parts individually instead of the kit and upgrade certain parts. thanks very much and no clever comments about how to use google my self i have tried but it just keeps sending me to self build kits and this forum site with other questions about self build kits thanks again

Is it possible to build a connector so the screen can be moved and does not have to be connected to the head unit? The screen is removeable as an antitheft measure so all I would need to do is extend the the distance between the head unit and the screen. If I could build the connectors then extending that would be simple.?

I am building a homemade cnc machine that will have an X Y1 Y2 Z and eventually a lathe. And I was wondering if I could use an 4-axis Breakout board, and just run the Y-axis to two different Divers to power the Y-axis stepper motors. If not what would be a good breakout board that is able to connect e-stop, Homing switches, router on off, and touch plate.

In Science next term, we've been told that we'll need to build a robotic gripper. All it has to do is pick up a cup. I've been having a look around, and the balloon idea isn't practical because if the cup was full it wouldn't work. And I'm okay with spending a little money, but I'd rather not spend $100 or anything on a kit. So what's a good idea for me?

I'm planing to build a battery pack this summer and i was wondering if this setup could work. The tp4056 boards are really cheap and I've got a few lipos around I want to make a use of it. My goal is 3s2p or 4s2p with one board per lipo cell (even 7p is of interest, but that is another build). Now I was thinking wiring from Vout on the board to a motherboard connector (something with a lot of connectors) so that I can disconnect the entire bank for charging. Take a look at the picture, it is supposed to be a 3s pack, but I'm not sure if it will work. When charging =NO load and when load = no charging. Tp4056 have a built in protection circuit why I would like to use those. I would appreciate your help on this. What I know about the board is that Batt+ and Vout+ are same, but Batt- and Vout- are separated by a mossfet that protects the battery. And of course 3s lipos batteries do not sum up to 12V exactly, that is not the issue here. Question is if this setup would work, i.e. When charged, I can connect them in series and the output is ~12V or I fry the circuit/batteries/both!?

Have an older Toshiba 2595 lap top (don't even remember how I acquired it, blame that one on the “Old Timers Disease” that I have). I am going to build a Digital Picture Frame from it. When I acquired it there was no battery or power supply with it. While doing some repair work on a similar computer for a friend, I did power it up with his battery and installed Windows 98 SE on the hard drive, so I know the unit works. The HD is only a 6 Gig, but is big enough to hold a couple of hundred pictures and the software program “Slideshow” to rotate them. What I need to know is, will this work on the power supply only. Do I need to do anything with the battery connections? There are 10 pins where the battery went into the computer and I don’t have any idea of which ones did what. Does anyone know what rating of power supply is required for this unit. Could I use a generic power supply instead of having to purchase the exact one for this unit? Of course you know there will be another upcoming “instructable” of how to build a Digital Picture Frame. I will try and make mine a bit more entertaining and perhaps include some new idea about how to do this type of thing. Thanks Larystoy

I removed a speaker and two tweeters from one unit and I removed the two speakers and the power amp from the other unit. How do I connect the all three speakers to the power amp and onto the audio card connected to the motherboard on the pc. I took some pictures for you to look at and see what I am up against. Need your help. so I am thanking you in advance for information about this . Eljero.

So, I'm working on making a segway in my vocational tech class as a graded project. I am able to design pieces and send the sketches to another tech class that can make what I need, but I have to find or make the actual electrical components, such as micro-controllers, sensors, etc., myself. The school allows a certain budget for buying necessary components, but I do need help figuring out what pieces I need. I am a wiz at programming and can learn almost any language within a few weeks. What I really need help with is figuring out the electronics. I don't want people just telling me what to use, I'd like an explanation, even a short one, so I understand why the piece is needed and increase my understanding of electronics. I am currently clueless about the different brands and types of micro-controllers, and would really like help in that respect, and as the project progresses, I am sure I will need more help. The topic has 'Collaboration' in the title because I would like multiple suggestions and tips to learn from and choose, and multiple sources of input could help me in the long run. So, for the first question, I have to ask, what would be the best micro-processor for building a segway, and why?

Hello all! I am currently in the process of designing an (increasingly) large project using LED light strips. These are the strips I intend on using. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? It should be. The other thing is that this is a portable project, one that I want to be able to use without being tethered to an outlet. Basically, what it comes down to is that the project involves using about 8.25 meters of light strip. I say about because I haven't done precise measurements, but I'm buying ten meters which should be plenty. This adds up to 264 LEDs total (for the 8.25, not the 10). Each LED can draw up to 60 mA at full brightness, so all of them at full brightness would draw almost 16 A >_< I am thinking that the best way to go about this would be to build four smaller battery packs, each powering about 2 meters of strip. I was looking at using these Li-Ion cells. The only problem is that I do not know how to accomplish what I am trying to do. I am still befuddled by the relationship between a battery's "C" rating and its mAh, and I am quite unsure of what kind of circuit these batteries need to be used with to prevent killing them, or worse, fires. What I really want is to be able to run the entire thing for 3-4 hours on a single charge of all four of the battery packs. But I also want to have the possibility to run all the LEDs at full brightness (albeit for a fraction of a second) without damaging the circuitry. Another problem I am encountering is that these batteries are 3.7V, and the strip needs about (but no more than) 5V to run. I appreciate any advice, help, references, etc. you can give me. I don't need a full blueprint or schematic of how exactly to do this, but I do not even know in which direction to start looking. Thanks again.

I want to make a 4s4p pack out of 18650 cells. I am asking a lot of questions and doing a lot of research online before buying the parts so I know it will all work when I order the parts. My first question is, should I make the pack out of 18650 cells with individual protection or all connected to one PCM? With protected cells all I need to do is connect the charger and the cells will charge and cut off at the right time? This is the charger I want to get. Maybe if I used protected cells I should charge them by taking them out of the pack and charging them in 4x wall chargers like this one. Say I didn't use cells with individual protection. I have my eye on this PCM . It has a balance control function. I can see the benefit of balancing cells in a 4s1p configuration but does balancing work properly in a 4s4p configuration when 4 cells are acting as one? Lastly I want to make the pack user serviceable so I will use battery holders. I saw some here but it would cost over 50 dollars for all the holders. That seems too expensive. Do you know of cheaper ones? Thank you for your input -Jacob
