Ethernet cable

I have broadband. I'm trying to set up a second network. The first one has a modem and a router. My second network just has a router so far. Since I'm subscribing for the internet, can I make an ethernet to coax cable. What I want to do is take one end of an ethernet cable and one end of a coax cable and put together. Which wires do I put on? This is probably really confusing, but this is the best way I can describe it.

Cable Ties

At present, I live in a flat I need to connect the indoor tv aerial in the kitchen to a set in the bedroom. This involves leading the cable around doors and possibly across the ceiling, to get to the opposing wall. Under normal circumstance, I could use cable ties with pins, but making holes is not allowed in the flat. I have been told that adhesive cable ties must help, but they appear very difficult to remove, and might leave stains. Any suggestions

Weird cable? Answered

OK so im wondering if this on the market (a little back story) Im building myself a home media center using an old pc and xbmc. I'd like to connect to my TV through HDMI so i can get full 1080p video from my media center the only problem being is that my old pc doesn't have an hdmi port only a dvi, so i was wondering if a cable or box existed that could combine the dvi from the graphics card and audio from the headphone port into HDMI allowing me to simply plug the other end into my TV. --------DVI (female from graphics card) / HDMI (male)<--------- \ --------Audio from PC (female from little green hole by usb slot on the mobo) Something similar to that, preferably cheap otherwise I'll simply pick up a new $50 card from Newegg.

overuse a cable (wire)? Answered

I was reading an online review for a $995 HDMI cable on bestbuy.com The guy said that the more you use a cable (i.e) the more electrons pass through it the more it degrades the cable. its this cable AudioQuest - Diamond 3.3' High-Speed HDMI Cable - Dark Gray/Black http://www.bestbuy.com/site/AudioQuest+-+Diamond+3.3%27+High-Speed+HDMI+Cable+-+Dark+Gray/Black/2383276.p?id=1218324437192&skuId;=2383276&st;=hdmi&cp;=1&lp;=3 Is that true or does he just want to justiy spending 1000 on a cable?

Serial to USB cable?

I have a serial cable for my Garmin Etrex, one side a serial plug the other goes to my GPSR. I am about to get rid of my desktop and only use my laptops but I don't have a serial port on either. Knowing this the serial cable is useless unless I spend another $40 - $50 on a "Serial to USB Converter". So, I cut it to see what and how many wires are inside of it and found only three. I was thinking of making my own cable but I don't understand the difference between the two ports. I saw the GPS 'ible here and it's no help unless you don't have the serial cable already... Here are my questions:1. As long as I connect the proper data in, data out and ground to the USB cable shouldn't it work?2. Are serial ports and USB ports that much different?I read a lot on the pfrancs website and i noticed a few of the connectors looked like they may have had USB cables hooked to them. I've searched and searched but came up with squat! If you have a really good understanding about USB and serial ports can you please help me or direct me to someone who can? Thanks in advance!

Sports without cable?

Our cable company is terrible. We've tried getting satellite (directv) but there is a big tree in the way and we rent so we can't do anything about that. You can get good quality versions of all of the actual shows that we watch online somewhere (directly from the network's website, hulu, etc). And watching them that way gives you all of the convenience of having a DVR - watch whenever, rewind, fast forward, pause, etc. Also, our TV has a PC input (which we use frequently). So I was thinking of getting a cheap computer to leave hooked up to the TV and set it up to easily navigate through shows. That way we could get rid of our EXPENSIVE and CRAPPY cable. The only problem is sports. I couldn't care less about them but I live with my boyfriend, who loves hockey. Hockey is the hardest sport to watch with low resolution (the puck is tiny! I can't find it in HD sometimes). It's also never shown on the local channels (so no option of the cheapy cable or using some kind of antenna). NHL.com has a subscription you can get to watch online but it won't show you games if it's available on your local cable. So basically - does anyone know of a good place online to watch live (preferably free and good quality) sports? Hockey is the most important but also football/baseball/basketball. Any help would be appreciated!

Well my neighbor threw out their charter cable TV box today. I took the power cord (if nothing else I will turn it into scrap copper) and left the box. But figured I would ask on here if anyone on here could think of anything to do with it. I suppose I could salvage off the RCA plugs and coax plugs. But i do not think I have any use for them. So anyone on here have any ideas on use for it?

fixing a laptop cable

Hello all! Love this site. First time poster. I have a problem with my laptop cable. It stopped working--I had to maneuver it into all sorts of strange positions to get it to charge my laptop. It finally refused my attempts by not charging at all. So I did the least sensible thing possible and cut into it with wire cutters to see if it was a frayed cable that I could possibly just wrap with electrical tape. Because the adapter was real bendy, more bendy then usual. I thought something inside wasn't connecting right. So now I have a really messed up laptop cable. There seems to be only one wire that extends from the adapter into the cord. I kinda cut into that too by mistake. At the end of the adapter there is a metal knob type thing, I don't know what its for but it doesn't really look like it connects to the cable. Is it fixable? I have beginner soldering skills. I've looked at other laptop cord repair instructables, but I'm not even sure where to begin. Thanks for any help! -Gil

Ribon cable colors

Hi all, I just read the "Web controlled powerstrip" by rleddington. A great build and it brought something to mind; Most everybody knows the resistor color code. The rainbow ribbon cables follow that same code. A lot of folks are unaware of this. There are ten colors and if you have more than ten wires, the color pattern repeats. If you know resistor code, this makes it a lot less confusing when wiring up a lot of circuits. If you follow the pins number/color on one end, the other end goes real easy without having to look up or follow a chart you made. Hope this helps! Thanks again for all the great projects.

HDMI to VGA cable? Answered

Hi, I recently bought a HDMI to VGA cord for my Raspberry Pi (V. 1). After I received it, I tried it, but it did not work. I did some research and from what I can find, running the cord straight from the Pi to a VGA screen will not work. Is this correct? Is there any way to use this cord? Or is this just a useless cord? Thanks in advance. :)

Multi Console Av Cables

SOOOOO i've got way to many gaming consoles.. i collect them i love them all DEARLY but i hate the fact i've got 20million sets of AV cables for each one. SO i went to gamestop and bought a multi console av cable.. covers my xbox (original), xbox 360, playstation 2, and gamecube/nintendo. so i plugged all my consoles in and fired on up.. and to my surprise i had no audio.. so i checked the av's on the tv side and moved htem and after much arguing with it all unplugged all but my xbox.. magically SOUND. so while the xbox was playing a movie i plugged in another console and bam sound was gone.. so my THEORY is this 1) Single Console it Works fine but i still have to switch the cables around every time i want to use another console 2) more than one console plugged in the audio from L & R is being diverted from the tv to the new console plugged in. but i am unsure how to test this.. and even more unsure if my theory is correct how to fix it. i bought the cable for next to nothing and am not above hacking it apart to get the results i want.

Problem with audio-cables/soldering

I bought sum cables (dual-lines) and want to solder stereo jacks, but then i found out that a phone jack got three points to solder although there are only two cable-lines leavin the jack - i would like to know how to solder that. The project is: We got a flat share here and i wanted to connect all computers (that got stereo jacks) with a switch (4 connectors per channel) and connect the switch with a pair of boxes in our kitchen so that we can chose the line in from the switch and not have to pump up the volume in our rooms to listen to our music while being in our kitchen; so there's 3 computers[stereo jack out] -> [4 line cable-ins]switch->[4 line cable outs] -> [not defined in; eventually stereo jack outs->stereo jack in-active-]boxes and i got this dual-lined cable (solid twisted copper; 100meters-spin), a pack of each kind of stereo jack plugs. What do i do to get sound?

LCD cable (LVDS?) Question

Hey guys, so I am in the process of *attempting* to repurpose my old laptop lcd into a video monitor. More specifically, I am trying to replace an old home built video monitor lcd that was broken with my working laptop LCD. When it comes to this sort of thing I would barely call myself a hobbyist. Left over from my original home built monitor I have is the LCD controller, and I am planning (hoping) to use that in order to drive the laptop LCD. I have gotten power working (it was a snap), but here is the problem I have run into and don't really know how to solve. The laptop cable for video (in searching around I guess it's an LVDS cable) is differently shaped/designed as to what the controller requires (and the cable for the old broken LCD won't work on my working LCD. So here is where I require help. I have posted 2 pictures, the first one is the lvds cable that plugs into the display, and the second is of the controller connection. They are both 30 pin connectors (although only 12 pins are in use my laptop lcd) so I really don't see why given the correct cable/adapter I shouldn't be able to get this to work. If anyone knows where I can get such a cable, or at least what the respective cable plugs are called (so I can search on my own) I would appreciate it very much. Also, if I am a fool for attempting to do this, and I am missing some important piece of information that makes what I want to do impossible, I will appreciate that type of info as well!

cable header sockets with .1" pitch

I'm looking for sockets like the ones pictured but I'm not having any luck. I guess I don't know what to search for. What I'd like is a way to make cables to connect PCBs together. I'd like to buy the sockets and wire them up myself. I'd also like 2 pin and even 1 pin versions. At a job I had a while ago they had wires with single sockets on the end that were very handy for connecting to standard .1" male pin headers. If anyone has any idea where to find these sockets or what to search for on Digikey I'd appreciate it.

Splicing and extending a cable connecting a lens and sensor module to the camera's main body?

For a while i had this odd idea, of separating the lens sensor module from the Contour camera body, so i could have it inside the helmet front vent hole, and the main body on the back of the helmet. So im thinking of splicing a longer cable in between. an IDE cable perhaps? It is shielded, pretty much the perfect match The image is what inside the camera between the lens module and the main body. The idea was to cut that blue bundle, and to splice the ide cable in (wire by wire) So the question are - Is the IDE cable a good choice, or i ought to use other cables. - What are my chances for failure/success? The camera aint worth much anymore, but i dont really want to break it.

If I wanted to wire a USB cable onto a thumb drive, replacing the original plug, how hard would that be? Answered

I'm going to be case modding whatever stick I get my hands on, and the place it is going is predicted to be limited. I'm going to strip the case off, and I was hoping to wire a cable in the place of the built in plug to cut down on the space needed inside the new case. If this is going to work, I plan to post it, so I'm hoping for a green light here.

Help with wiring

I have disassembled an old vacuum cleaner that runs on 240v/5amps/1200w. I wanted to obtain the electric motor that should perform at 1.5 horsepower. As I was taking it apart I forgot how the switch leads were originally configured. I want to give the motor a test run but I don't want to hit the fuse in my house so I was hoping someone can help me plug the switch in the normal configuration. What order do the brown and blue plugs (that comes from wall plug) fit into the switch? And what order do the blue plugs (goes to motor) fit into the switch? A silly question really but I am new to working with electronics.
