Connecting a USB?

How would you connect the wires from a USB (female) with wires that are red, black, green, and white, to a 5V boost regulator that only had three legs - Vin, Ground, Vout?  It's not for a computer so I don't think we need the green and white wires, but I could be wrong.  Which wire goes where?  Thanks!

Connect a Sketch Answered

This is a People counter, well hope to be if working.ha. Lazer across a doorway hitting a LDR. The 4 digit 7 seg display counting up 1 each time a person breaks the beam.  As of now i  have a counting sketch from the Sparkfun example. It is counting up 0 to 999 and at the same time i have an LDR reading to the serial monitor and blinking the LED on pin 13. But they are not "interacting". I am trying to get the beam breakes from the LDR to advance the count by 1 every time it is broken. In the loop function is the mills that was advancing the counting. I have changed it to   displayNumber(counter).  Among other things. But i haven't been successful in having the LDR advance the count. The sketch is still missing some "stuff". What could i change to have the counter advance by 1 every time the lazer beam is broken?    Thanks W /* 6-13-2011 Spark Fun Electronics 2011 Nathan Seidle This code is public domain but you buy me a beer if you use this and we meet someday (Beerware license). 4 digit 7 segment display: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9483 Datasheet: http://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/Components/LED/7-Segment/YSD-439AR6B-35.pdf This is an example of how to drive a 7 segment LED display from an ATmega without the use of current limiting resistors. This technique is very common but requires some knowledge of electronics - you do run the risk of dumping too much current through the segments and burning out parts of the display. If you use the stock code you should be ok, but be careful editing the brightness values. This code should work with all colors (red, blue, yellow, green) but the brightness will vary from one color to the next because the forward voltage drop of each color is different. Connecting a soundbar to a tv?

Me and my family recently purchased an Auvio soundbar from radioshack. It came with an RCA cable to hook up to our TV. However, my TV uses an "S/PDIF" jack for audio. I don't know where to get one of these, but it's been really inconvenient having to switch the RCAs to whatever component I'm using at the time instead of just hooking it up to the TV. What should I do?

Connect camera to NXT?

A friend and I are currently developing a turret that has a stationary camera attached to it, and two servo motors that move the actual gun part of the turret up/down and left/right. I am using software already developed for the program, and I plan to use my NXT to run the software and act as the driver for the servo motors using some modified cables. My only problem is that since I am running the software on the NXT, I need to be able to set up the USB webcam I have so that it inputs it's data into the NXT unit. The problem is, I have no idea how to do this. I was thinking of using the standard cable the NXT comes with that has a USB end, and connecting it to the USB end of my camera with a double female USB adaptor, but I'm not entirely sure that it will read this as an input. Also, I need that port available for when I calibrate the system on the computer. Does anywone know how I can modify the male USB connector of the camera so that I can plug it into one fo the NXT's input ports? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Internet connection problems? Answered

Hi!  I am running Windows XP on a virtual machine.  My NIC settings are for a bridged adapter, and I need to keep it that way.  The host computer can communicate with microsoft.com and silverlight just fine, but my virtual machine can not (although every other website that I have tried works just fine... I'm actually posting this from my Virtual machine).  I also have a server that is running server 2003 that has the same problem.  All other PCs are running either Windows 7 Pro, (and my parents have Vista Home Premium).  Every computer including my parents work just fine with microsoft.com and silverlight.  My router is running DD-WRT micro, but I don't know if that helps any.  Since Server 2003 and XP both have the same problem, and Server 2003 is based off of XP, I'm wondering if it has something to do with XP.  I am using my virtual machine for testing purposes, and I need it to work with silverlight.  Any suggestions on how I might fix this? Thanks!

How to connect a diode on parallel solar panel connection? Answered

This will connect directly to a USB boosting converter for a maximum output of 5V at 1 amp for charging or powering a USB device. No batteries will be connected. Can I just use a diode on the + wire where it connects to the USB charger or do I really need one on each panel? Thanks for any help!

Circuit works when I poke a connection, but the connection is sound

So, I've started playing with vfds since this weekend jaycar (if your an Aussie) is selling 11 digit, 10 segment vfds for $1.90. Cheap as :P. It runs off 12v for the segments, 4.5v for the filament. I'm using 3 4094s to control the segments and an atmega168 to control the 4094s, using 3 transistors to up the voltage between the 4094s data, clock and latch pins and the the atmega I/O ports. I'm pretty sure everythings hooked up correctly but, as with most projects, it's not working first time :P. Here's the thing, it works if I poke either the green or brown connection with just one probe of my multimeter/finger it works. My first thought is that i've hooked up my transistors incorrectly, the base is 5v with a 2.2k current limiting resistor, and the collector is 12v with a 5.1k current limiting resistor. To much? I blew out a resistor in initial testing and it got me a little worried :P Thoughts?
