I need help with a THERMOELECTRIC COOLER project?

My project I would like to complete is a thermoelectric piece of turbo piping to cool on my friends drift car it needs to be able to run on a 12v battery .I am looking at buying a few of these http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/pjt-7/40mm-x-44mm-thermoelectric-cooler/1.html building a square piece of turbo piping to put it in. I am still not quite sure exactly how it works. I am a Ford Technician, Ford uses them in the heated and cooled seats so they kinda explained how they work but they left quite a bit out. So a lil info or suggestions would be appreciated thanks. If I build it I'll be sure and put the build up on here.

Power supply cooling

I'm building a power supply for my cnc machine that gives off about 37volts at 8 amps, and 12 volts at 0.9 amps. All of the transformers are from radioshack (using 6 heavy duty, 25.2volts, 2 amps transformers, 4 in parallel giving off 25.2 vdc at 8 amps, and 2 12.6 volts in parallel. Together in series gives about 37 volts at 8 amps. using 1 25.2 volts 450mA transformer, center tapped) My case does not have enough room for proper cooling such as fans. My case is water tight though, should I fill it up with something like mineral oil to keep the transformers cool?

Laptop Cooling Question

I'm using a laptop-sized, vented, inverted vegetable tray to keep the laptop cool. It's quite effective even without any fans in this scorching heat. I added a CPU fan underneath ( 12 V, 0.42 A), and ran it off a USB cable from the laptop. The air is quite nice, but one thing I'm a bit worried is, when I touch the top of the laptop, it slightly vibrates constantly due to the fan underneath. Is that dangerous for the laptop? I'm planning to add another fan beneath the hard disk. The one I have now, is under the laptop's CPU fan. Another thing I would like to know is that, is it okay to run two fans of 042 A each, from two USB ports? Each USB port can supply 0.5 A max current. Running one fan off each port should be okay? But, today, the temperature was quite high in the afternoon, nearly 50 degrees! I'm thinking of buyin a readymade laptop cooler. power supply cooling

Normally I'm pretty good with electronics, but I need some help with this problem. I'm building a power supply for a cnc machine and I need help designing a circuit to power fans when it's over a certain temperature. Here's some things it needs: 1) 12 volts supply (easy with a transformer and filtering it) 2) power fans when it reaches a certain temperature. 3) still keeps the fans on even though the rest of the system is off. 4) after the system if off and it's down to temperature then the transformer turns off, to save electricity and to not make it hot after a long time. If possible can someone draw up a schematic? Thanks in advance!

Blender cool effects

So I really like the program blender. I enjoy using it, but I am not very good. I thought it would be cool, though if there was a place where people could share cool effects they made in blender, so this is the purpose of the forum. If you made a video with a cool effect in blender, post it here or link it here, I would love to check it out :D

Insanely Cool Multitouch

So now all I need is $100k and I'm ready to rock. watch the videoJefferson Y. Han likes big computer monitors. If a screen is large enough, four or five people can work at it together, rearranging blueprints, say, or editing photos. But they can't do that if they're taking turns at a keyboard and mouse. The answer, which Han demonstrates on a 3 x 8-ft. monitor in his lab at New York University, is multitouch input. It allows any number of users to lay hands on the screen as if they were manipulating real objects. On the monitor, recently dubbed the Media Wall, Han uses his hands to spin a virtual globe and then zoom into the canyons of Manhattan. "A mouse is an indirect pointing device," Han says. "You're working with an object that's not on the screen. Multitouch computing is direct manipulation."Han, the son of Korean immigrants, drew inspiration from the way light diffuses when you touch a glass of water. It's a phenomenon known as "œfrustrated total internal reflection." Han attached LEDs to the side of a piece of clear acrylic ”his screen" and mounted an infrared camera on the back. Light traveled through the acrylic. When Han touched the screen, some light diffused out and was captured by the camera. He then designed software that allows the screen to be used for operating mapping programs, handling photos and drawing animated figures. Perceptive Pixel, the business Han started with an NYU colleague, builds custom multitouch computers for private industry and military clients (and, now, to anyone with $100,000).Multitouch computing isn't new: the concept has been kicking around since the 1980s, and two Breakthrough Award-winning products, Apple's iPhone and Microsoft's Surface, use versions of it. Han's special contribution: Beyond his varied applications for multitouch computing lies a broad vision of how it can empower people to work together in new ways.

Cool Batch applet

Hey whats up the names Jason. I am 13 and like to play with computers but not like Halo (although i am guilty of occasionally playing Halo) what interest me is computer logic and programming. So right now i am half-way decentish with Qbasic and consequently Visual Basic, but the language i am most fluent in is just plain old DOS scripting (batch files). My math teacher at the begging of the year my math teacher announced that once o twice a month we would have a pop quiz on square roots and squares of numbers 1-20. Now to say the least I am poor with memorization. So i tried flash cards and starin at a sheet with the squares and square roots on it. but I was pretty consistently getting 60s and 70s. Now being a pretty good student this upset me and my parents weren't exactly happy. So then i decided i would make a batch file to quiz me on this, my first one was on sqrts. writing this took forever so even still i made another for squares. These programs help me study immensely and i now get a perfect 100 every quiz.. i then started thinking that there must be a way to speed up the writing of a simaler quiz program. thats why i wrote this, and i know it is probably mediocre but i like it so be nice. Watercooling a PC with a central heating radiator?

So I'm completely new to water cooling, I own a closed loop cooler and I know the names of the water cooling parts and assembly, but I have no real experience. I presume it's possible to use a normal radiator as a passive radiator in a loop, but I've got a couple of questions. First, do I have to be worried about what the radiator and waterblocks are made of, are the metals important? Second, will I need a significantly more powerful pump than the standard D5? Thanks! P.S. the rad I had in mind is this http://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-type-11-single-panel-single-convector-radiator-white-300-x-800mm/38602   It's rated for 1505 BTU/hour, which equates to 441W, which is in theory plenty my PC (4670K, HD7850 which I'll probably upgrade in the near future) The reason for using this kind of radiator is because they're far cheaper and passive, although I suppose the increase in pump power may negate quietness of no fans. It's also more fun ;)

peltier cooling/heating system for transportable animal incubator

I am trying to design a heating system for an animal incubator that can be transported in a car to rescue animals and keep their body temperature level. I was thinking of using the peltier systems to heat the box the animals will be staying in but I'm not sure if they would have the capability of 70-90 degrees fahrenheit. Also the temperature needs to be very specific (plus or minus 1 degree) is there a thermometer out there that would work well for this? I just need some help on learning about these because I've done a little research but I'm still confused on how they work and if I could even use them. Also, is there a good website to buy these on? I could use a lot of little ones or one medium sized one (up to 1ft by 1ft) but not too tall.

360 submergerd in mineral oil

Well, I seen the instructable to submerge a PC motherboard in non-conductive mineral oil to cool it and brainstormed that this could be the perfect fix for my RROD problem with a early model Elite. I have drawn up plans and already found a few problems and would like some input on them. I do not expect a expert answer but I'm sure there are people out there that can make a far better assessment on this than I. 1.) Will the oil conduct and move enough heat to be more effective than fans? 2.) The case I have designed requires roughly 2.8-3.0 Gal of mineral oil and if i was to consider         circulating it through a radiator, what would an appropriate pump size be? ( gallons or liters          per min) 3.) Also I would plan on using only wireless controllers so is there a way to solder some leads       onto the sync button and maybe to an external momentary switch so I would not need access       to the MB everytime we wanted to add another player? Thank you for any help you can provide on any of these issues. Regardless I will begin work on it tomorrow as a experiment and to challenge myself. I will be making an instructable on this when it is done. And many thanks to the original author that inspired me to take it a step further. https://www.instructables.com/id/Mineral-Oil-Submerged-PC/

How to make doppler laser cooling? Answered

I've heard of a form of cooling done by lasers known as "doppler cooling" because it is based on the Doppler effect. I think this is neat and would like to try to make a laser cooling device. I can't seem to figure out how though. I did some google research and all I get is cooling options for lasers rather than cooling options from lasers. What wavelength would you need to do this? Is there a particular way to do this rather than just shining a laser continuously at an object needing cooling. Would this work through a translucent object? I appreciate any help or guidance you could offer.

Is it good idea to replace laptop's fan by fan of cooler pad ?

There are nasty fan inside of my laptop. The fan is loud and sound is nasty and works always (its such model of laptop), so I want to remove bottom of the laptop's corpus and may be top of the cooling pad and use the pad instead of internal cooler (which I will plug out). I have AMD. I think that it's may work because: fan inside laptop blows at radiator (which is on another end of copper pipe), not right at place where processors located. And I want big fan that will blow right at those part of cooling system where processors located. I'm not gonna remove copper pipe, just plug out default fan and use pad's instead so that it will blow at cooling system from the bottom. I'm gonna use pad with 220-250 mm fan. What do you think ?

Vortex cooling / heating tubes

I am currently gathering information about vortex tubes for my repulsine project. There are plenty to choose from on a commercial base but I struggle to find any technical drawings with proper dimensions. Several home made varities can be found as well but wither with poor performance or incomplete drawings. So I was thinking that someone here either uses a commercial product at home or work and might be able to take some basic measurements for me? I am most interested in the relation between inner tube diameter and lenght for the hot and cold ends as well as the size for the vortex chamber itself. If there is an orifice used on the cold end the hole diameter would be required as well. My aim is, based on a properly working original, to create a device that might be less efficient but can be used without a compressor. Would like to see, correct transfer of dimensions given, a vortex tube like system was used in the repulsine. Some old documents state that there was a "seperator" which removed "heavy air particles" and created a temperature differencial between top cone of the repulsine and the wave disks.

Cooling of Laptops - It it possible to use copper pipe and heat convection to achieve this?? Answered

I have a compaq laptop that runs the cpu at 55 °C which is equal to 130 - +°F. I have constructed a fan extraction system using my computer desk that has two fans underneath extracting the hot air from the bottom of the laptop unit and 2 fans directing cool air into the laptop  from behind. I am only getting a 5C temperature drop. That is when the computer is idle. If the computer is actively processing this temperature goes up. The core temperature is constant 4 degrees high the cpu. I have read that using a hot water bottle is an effective way of reducing the temperature. I actually tried this method and it gave me much the same result as the fans. see this site http://digitalcomposting.wordpress.com/2008/04/30/water-cooled-laptop-stand-6/ Has anyone tinkered with the notion of using  a sealed copper coiled tubing with water or coolant. That the laptop can sit on via a thin aluminum plate as its base and acting as a heat transference agent then using the  natural heat convection en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_transfer to cool the laptop. This is achieved by having one of the sealed ends of the copper tube immersed into cold liquid. The convection would presumably happen due to the heat and cold differences. Your opinions and further Ideas are welcome.

Using TEC chips and heatsinks for personal cooling - heating collars or pads

I've been toying with using TEC chips (facinating devices that are cheap - applying voltage make one side hot - the other cold, Inversely, appling any existing temprature differential to the sinks PRODUCES POWER). They are used most commonly by consumers in auto beverage coolers and heaters. It  started when a car ran me down on my bike, and I was wearing a neck brace for months. I thought about how misserable I'd be if it were summertime. I also thought of those poor people that always wore them... Anyway, there's a thousand different easy ways to do this - I took fluid-filled plastic sections of a beverage cooler and attached them to a belt, which hangs around my neck. applied the heat  sink of the TEC and there you go - just wrap it in something. Now if I were on a motorcycle in summer and stopped in traffic, the cool collar would be a lifesaver, as well as a myriad of other apps. I cannot figure out the best (inexpensive) way to control this. It's easy enough to turn on and off - you can hardly forget it! But if I allow the chip to get too much wattage it will get too hot and self-destruct. Also, if I limit the wattage correctly, it would just need adjusting, and could be left on most of the time. The idea here is there are many ways to do this but they are too expensive... I want everyone to be able to afford it. If you use a Pot or resistor, the excess goes to heat and ruins battery life, and other controllers of DC current are expensive. Any help? I am almost 60 and have earned the nickname Misc. Expert among my family and friends, and I must say I'm very impressed with what y'all do here in this newsletter - Congrats!

How to determine which potentiometer I need for this project? Answered

Hi all,  I am building a laptop cooling pad with external power supply, and I would like to include a potentiometer so I could control the speed of the fan rotation. However, I am not sure about the resistance of the potentiometer. I am using the adapter from an old HP printer. Here are the values: +16V, 500mA And I am using the Cooler Master SickleFlow 120 fan. 12VDC, 0.35A

pump capacity / electrical interference

I am building a custom watercooling system in a confined space, with the pump motor close to the processor. for the pump, I intend to use a thin centrifugal pump with a centeral brushless motor based around a re-wound cd drive stator, but don't know what the power required to move enough water is, especially with small bore pipe (2 X 1/4" also, when positioning the pump, how far away should it be from the main board to avoid causing interference, as the pump is essentially a large spinning magnet with several amps going to it. I'm guessing the motor should be as far away as possible, as well as the supply cables. thanks for the help.

Possible to make firewire powered cooling fan vs. usb cooling fan?

Is it? I think I read that firewire 800 can provide MUCH more power, and if I could utilize that to power more powerful fans (as I only have 12v computer fans available at the moment, which usb can't provide enough energy to power at 5v).

Is it possibly to take apart a fridges Cooling element for use elsewhere? Answered

I am hoping to make a fog chiller for smoke machines. From the designs I have seen they have been using ice although this isn't very effiecient for the how I am going to use it. So would it be possibly to take out the cooling element from a fridge (I have one lying around) and use it to cool other things? All comments are welcome Thank You Oscar

There is barely a breeze SOMETIMES in the west facing windows... help ps its 5am and i am too hot to sleep, sorry for the silly *.bmp the southern wall doesn't have any windows or doors

about superheating and supercooling.... Answered

If superheated/cooled water is exposed to exaggerated temperatures, like 1 million° celcius or to the very depths of coldness, does it still stays in liquid form? in other words, is there a limit to superheating/cooling?

Peltier Air Water Harvester

I was looking around at some of the air water harvesters tonight and of thinking about using a Peltier unit for one. Just started thinking and I know very little about either one of these. So my question is, could you use the cold side of a peltier to get an air current down to just below dew point causing humidity to condense on maybe a heat sink or something so it could be collected and use the hot side to create the air flow by a chimney effect? No moving parts.  Solar power it so it an be used anywhere in the world? Could be something that could supply clean water to people in need.

Computer PSU's and Peltier elements?

Hey, I have 2 158W Peltier elements, that I would like to mount to some CPU-heatsinks, and power with an old 400W PSU. Can I "just do that"? There seams to be some caveats with how these units draw power AFAIK. Also, does anyone have any experience with how much heat displacement is needed to not just ending up frying the unit? Any suggestions on what heatsink to pair them with, and how strong a resistor to put on them? I want to use them at the maximum power I can get them to run with continuously for up to 2 hours. I have way too limited experience with electronics, and only a week to build my project, so I kind of have to go with the simplest approach here :(
