Hi! I plan on some experiments with a modified method i saw here for PCB-plating with copper to make the holes conductive. Now the question: What if my metal is not 100% pure but has some impurities in it? Does it still only "transfer" the copper and leaves the impurities as slag behind? I think it should be this way, since a similar approach gets used in refining metals to a very high purity; but i am unsure... Lets say i do: Follow the basic recipe (with smaller ammounts!) @ http://www.thinktink.com/stack/volumes/voliii/consumbl/cplatmix.htm and use copper sulfide. I think the trick now is that only copper-ions get disolved in the copper sulfide and nothing else. Those ions become plated to the other pole and thus i get purest copper plated to it?

Hi !This morning, I was wondering what was the maximum temperature of the flame of a simple candle.So, this evening, despite the answer is on the internet, I made some quick and various experimentations of my own, mainly because there was nothing interesting at TV ...I put a wire of tin with a diameter of 1 millimetre over the flame and it liquefied immediately. So I immediately deduced the temperature of the flame was over 505oK ...Then, I tried with a wire of iron with a diameter of 1 millimetre, and it did not liquefied. So, I deduced the maximum temperature of the candle's flame was below 1811oK.Then, I tried with a very thin wire of enameled copper (thiner than a hair), the enamel vaporized in a flash and the copper wire quickly liquefied. I deduced the max temp of the flame was over 1357oK.This gave me a maximal temperature somewhere between 1357oK and 1811oK.Then, I tried with a thin wire of copper (0.2 millimitres), and it liquefied. But I also noticed that, sometimes, there was a green flame adding to the candle's flame.On the internet, they say that coppers flame are green. This would mean that my candle's flame is hot enough to vaporize my copper wire ? and, thus, that the maximal temperature of the candle flame is over 2835oK ?????If so, why can't it liquefy my 1 millimeters iron wire ?=o/

For a project in school we are designing a simple electric generator using copper wire and a magnet. The output i'm aiming for is 15V .The fixed criteria for Faraday's law as followsE =( NBA ) / T T= 3 seconds N = adjustable A = adjustable B = Neodymium 1.32 T so how do i chose my copper wire? what diameter? what kind? how do i keep the design not so BIG . Hello , am trying to get a hold of some copper carbonate but its much too expensive. now i have some raw, and untarnished (beyond normal anyways) copper laying around and want to know if theres any way i can convert this into pure copper carbonate, with minimal impurities such as copper oxides and such. is there a way to do this through electrolysis perhaps? also, is there a way to convert copper and copper oxide to copper hydroxide which i can simply add carbonic acid to to copper carbonate? also whoever answers my question will get a best anser form me , guaranteed

If you have say 2 inch or better diameter copper wire to strip here is what I do. I have ben in the scrap arena for years. Buy a large handeled pair of shears that are only for copper. They will look much like a large pair of boltcutters. Cut your insulated wire into about two foot lenghts. Get a large pot, the bigger the better and heat with an out door propane burner full of water. Place the cut sticks of wire into the boiling water fro about five min. Get some insulated rubber gloves and a sharp razor knofe and you will find that the plastic insulation carves away like butter. This works on everykind of insulated wire I have come across. With lead wrapped insulated wire, get a plasma torch. It cutts easily and is so fast the plastic wire inside does not have time to catch on fire. Use plenty of ventilation to avoid breathing lead based fumes.

I'm trying to deposit metallic copper into a piece of wood and i'm doing it with a solution of copper chloride (the alternative pcb etchant to the ferric stuff). I want to deposit metallic copper into the wood where it has soaked in and remove the chlorides altogether. Bearing in mind that i don't want much in the way of another solution, how could it be done? Could I drop in some lead to precipitate out the chloride ions or is there something else that would steal the chloride ions from copper that wouldn't be too hard for a hobbiest to obtain?

Hi ... do you know, how to remove the copper layer from a PCB - by not using any ETCHING METHOD. Just to separate the cooper from plastic/f.glass ??? Do you think, that HEAT would do the trick ??? Like when you hold soldering tip to long on a pcb, it can happen that the cooper film become loose from the PCB. Thank you in advance. Zholy P.S. : The reason, why I asked = I was thinking of creating/extending a "ribbon cable" : 1. remove the copper film 2. stick it to the foil, that you can laminate 3. put the "ribbon cable pattern" on the film and ETCH it. 4. laminate it ... and cut the just the top of the laminate foil at the ends, so you have clear cooper for the contacts, but the bottom laminate film as a support.

I am trying to make money by salvaging copper from old junk like tranformers. I wanted to know where I could find the following items for salvaging: UPSs. Uninteruptable power supplies have really nice power transformers with lots of copper. Old welders. These have lots of copper in the windings and cables. Power Line Transformers. I have read these have about a hundred dollars worth of copper in them. I would like to get these for free or very cheap. Thanks.

In my enameling work, I sometimes use a mild homemade pickling solution to remove firescale (cupric oxide) from copper. The pickle is a saturated solution of white vinegar and kosher salt, kept hot in a Crock Pot. After heating the copper pieces in a kiln, a layer of cupric oxide forms on the surface, which is then dissolved in the salt/vinegar solution. After a while, the solution turns a lovely blue color from the dissolved copper. If I forget to put the lid on the pot, eventually the solution evaporates, leaving pretty blue crystals that look a bit like copper sulfate. So, what have I got here? I don't want to just dump it due to the copper content. I'd like to figure out something to do with it, but first I need to know what it is. I'm thinking it might make a good electroplating solution, but that's just a guess.

I managed to plate a copper trace onto piece of acryllic today, to test out a process for easily and cheaply making (and possibly editing/repairing) custom PCBs. The adhesion appears to be good for surface preparation used so far, and a nice thick track has formed. So, would it be worth uploading an instructable once the process has been refined a little (or enough to make simple boards properly)? Any questions, feedback or comments would be appreciated.

Hi all, I'm working on a project aimed at helping e-waste workers in Ghana. They collect cables and burn them to get the copper (see video 6min). Burning them is toxic and they damage their health. I'm looking for alternatives to this burning process. - First idea would be stripping cables. I will need a very basic tool, man-powered, to strip them. - Second idea would be shredding and sorting out. Probably something like this bike (http://www.halwatts.co.uk/Esource). I would like to do it open source hardware to facilitate replication. I'm looking for people who can help by giving tips on how to build a prototype, and maybe get more involved. Do you know about tools that can serve this purpose of getting copper out the cables, low-cost, low-tech? Thanks

I have tried for a long to find a tutorial on how to do classic copper and brass soldering. I mean, is it anything like electronics soldering, at which i am fairly apt at? Do you use a a rod or a torch? ...How to mend a broken copperpipe? make the most classic pipejoints? How to mend a broken brass lamp that has lost a thingie? What kind of solder does one use for different materials? In all it's simplicity I am looking for an entrance level tutorial into the subject, explaining what basic tools one need and outlining how to do a few simple things.

Hello, i want to know, aside form colour, what is the diiference between retail labeled magnetic wire, and the enameled copper wire i find in a dc power pack (battery charger). the wire i am talking about is the thicker wire, not the thin wire that the AC power flows through. i want to build a coilgun, but cannot afford magnetic wire, and want to know if the wire in the transformers will work. from what ive seen the guage / size is the same, and the only seeable difference is the colour , where one is copper colour and the other is red.

I recently tried making acid cupric chloride etchant; however, my batch always goes a darkish red colour as soon as i mix the two together even when i haven't added any copper. I've been using 3% hydrogen peroxide from a pharmacist and 30% HCl From Bunnings. All the stuff was fresh and in dark plastic bottles. The container i put it into is plastic. It still etches but it's nearly impossible to see if the copper is etched away without pulling it out. Can anyone tell me what's in the mixture that's making it red and how i can correct it. Thanks

Hi, I have in my lab room thick tinted copper wire. I planned using them to make some electromagnet, but fail to find a solution on how to insulated them. At first I thought using those acrylic/enamel can spray, but I am not sure if it would fully insulated them. Would the acrylic/enamel penetrate between the contact gap and insulated them or will it just fail to do so? In fact, I am not even sure if it's a good idea to begin with, because I don't want to actually waste the copper. As an alternate option I thought using those magnet wire from the Microwave Oven transformer, the one with really thick diameter. I would uncoil them, and manually turn them. I thought I could use some of your advice. Actually, I dont mind if the process takes time, I am just looking a convenient way. Thanks Richard

E-waste collectors in countries like Ghana collect cables and then burn them to get rid of the plastic and then sell the copper. This process is not environmental friendly and harms their health. I'm working on a project to find better ways to treat imported e-waste. Is there a better way to strip cables that would not imply burning, and that would respect the worker's health? Thanks!

A 75 year old woman has cut Armenia off from the internet. Whilst scavenging for copper in neighbouring Georgia, Hayastan Shakarian accidentally severed the fibre-optic cable connecting all three of Armenia's internet wholesale providers, and the whole country was cut off for almost 12 hours until after midnight on the night of 28th March. The pensioner has been arrested, and could face three years in prison, but has been released pending the completion of the investigation and the result of the prosecution. Armenian websites identified Shakarian as Armenian herself, not Georgian, and questioned the credibility of an old lady causing the blackout, claiming similar damage in Georgia has caused problems for Armenia in the past. I have a few questions about a rail gun project i'm working on... 1.) Where are some good places that i can buy parts for a decent railgun (i already know of some places like home depot (for the rails and casing) and radio shack (for some of the minor components)? 2.) Is there a better material (cost and in efficiency) than copper for the rail? (i heard aluminum is good, and i also heard silver is good but silver is expensive) 3.) what are good power supplies (something fairly mobile would do nicely, and i am not asking for specific requirements i am asking what other people have used as power supplies) if you commented on my last question, don't on this one please, i got your opinion. I would like an answer that is to the point please and not something that has to do with whether or not i should build a rail gun (i have gotten answers like that before which bugs me when i ask a question).

Is there something special about this? Also, Is this a form of electroplating? I doused some pennies in vinegar for about a week+ and tried this. On a thinner, magnet wire lead, (copper +) it had what I beleive is a dark green copper salt, that burned blue. Can anyone Identify this? Also, I changed the diameter of the lead, to about 1/16 - 1/8 (Copper lead, +) and It seemed like that lead was powder coated with copper. Is there a reason it would not be a copper salt? The other was coated with what I think is Zinc.

I know that copper is a better conductor than tin or aluminum. But one of my friends a few days ago told me that instead of etching his layout on copper, he used the bottom of an altoids tin. he said all he did was sand the bottom until there was no paint of the altoids can and then he etched his layout. (Chemical bath, toner, etc.) So my question is, Does anyone know how to etch custom layouts (toner layouts) on tin or aluminum? **I figure this could save people some money and time on some projects. :)

In all of the tutorials for making your own PCBs, I've never seen the thickness of the copper discussed. Does one work better than the other for home etchings? I plan to use muriatic acid. Side note: does RadioShack still carry copper clad in stores? It's not on the website anymore, and I don't go to RS on a regular basis to check.

I try to put a Nichrome wire on come copper wire but the copper wire is always burning (when the Nichrome get red and hot [really need its ^^])so i lose the connection between the Nihrome wire and the copper wire....What should i do? use big fat copper wire?

I have built a few little nail style electromagnets and they all heat up. If there is less power its slower but it still does. I have experimented by using this heat but on smaller coils it will start to smoke because it is to hot. This made me wonder if this is a short or actually an apply-able heat source. On a very large coil heat is generated but not enough to make smoke so is guess that it is actually losing power so it can't be a short. SO CAN I USE THIS METHOD TO MAKE A MUG WARMER OR IS SHORTING OUT THE BATTERY
