Rotary dial phone

Hi all, Yesterday, my grandma gave me an old telephone. My mother used it as a toy, so my grandfather disconnected the wires (for safety). I wanted to connect the phone, but I don't know which connections I need. I attached some photo's to make the situation clear. It would be great if you could help me! Arnout P.S.: English is not my mother tongue so it would be fantastic if you didn't use a vocabulary that's too difficult ;)

use a landline telephone, speakers, a mic, and a computer to go online with dial-up

Would it be possible to use a landline telephone, a computer with speakers and a microphone, and a software program to connect to the internet with dial-up? there are multiple free dial-up numbers available, so if I called with the phone, and used the computer to emulate an analog modem and listen to the response with the microphone, would I be able to get online? if so, does anything like this already exist?

I can't get Xbox Live with my dial-up. I tried the steps that instructables gave and I still can't get it.

I have the ethernet cable hooked to my pc, and went to my networks and did the wizard just like instructables said to do but it keeps telling me something is wrong with my IP address. It says my IP address must belong to two or more other devices. I don't know what to do. Thanks for any help.

Dial-up internet server

Hi everyone, I am trying to connect my Sega Dreamcast to the internet with it's 56k modem, without using telephone lines. From what I understand, I need to connect my my Dreamcast to a tone generator, then to a USB modem plugged into a laptop with which to forward the connection over wifi. My question is: Is this is a plausible solution, and if so, could I simplify and shrink this set up. Ideally I would like to figure out if I could build a tone generator instead of buying one and how can I replace the laptop with something like a raspberry pi. I think that once I figured out how to forward the connection on my laptop, it would be fairly straightforward to do the same with a raspberry pi. I would prefer a relatively compact solution if possible. Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts.

Turn dial to generate pulses

Here is my proposal. I'm building a pan/tilt unit. I plan to have a 200 step motor attached to a 20:1 worm gear, (the latter is needed so it will 'lock' in place, and not be solely reliant on the motor's holding torque.. So in order for the output shaft to turn 180 degrees needs the worm gear to turn 10 times. In turn the motor must do 10 revs, which would need 2000 pulse steps. It's the pulse generation that's proving difficult. Whilst a 555 timer could generate pulses, I want it to be 'mechanical' For example, if I turn the knob 90 degrees, I want to create 1000 pulses, (45 degrees creates 500 pulses) and so on, so the knob matches the physical position of the camera. If I turn the knob 180 degrees in 1 second ... the motor will turn 180 degrees in 1 sec. If I turn the knob slowly, pulses will be generated slowly, and the camera/motor will turn slowly. My idea at present is some sort of optical encoder ... but that would need 4000 divisions on the wheel!! Or - a 1024ppr wheel with a 1:4 step up gearing ... but such encoders are several hunderd Pounds!! And I would need two of them!! I have software that will allow me to print an encoder wheel, but resolution will have to be 'course' since it will use an LED / transistor, so I suspect around 64 divs. I purchased a RC servo, wondering if I could remove the motor, and turn the output shaft by hand. Couldn't be done. I've also considered 'planatary gears' in reverse to 'step up' the revs ... but I cannot locate any 'hobbyist' versions other than the Tamayia type. Also briefly looked at RC servos, but having done the maths, it would be impractical to get the output to move (say) 0.1 degrees as the motor would only move about 1/4 of a rev and have no torque!! (One option may be to make it continuos rev, and place a feedback pot externally.but again, moving 0.1 degree around a pot would create minimal feedback) Incidentally, 0.1 degrees is the stepper resolution 180 degrees / 2000 steps Anyone any ideas? Bearing in mind that the speed of the pulse train is dependant on how fast the control (pot) is turned, and also matches physical camera position. Encoders are preferred option as it's then possible to electronically guage which way the motor is turning. If electronic, here is (sort of) what the circuit would need to compute. (Sample and hold?) Moved from 0 to 45 degrees in one second. That degree of movement needs 500 pulses, thus need to generate a pulse width to get 500 pulses in 1 second timescale. ** This is just to give an example. The actual sampling rate would be much faster. If it was a 'slow' 1/10th second, in the above example it would check every 4.5 degrees, and generate 50 pulses in that time scale.

PCB Help: Need to make new dial or short out for coffee grinder

I just followed a great post to hack my Delonghi Coffee Grinder here: http://ping-pong-balls.blogspot.ca/2012/03/so-youve-bought-delonghi-kg89-how-to.html However in the process I shamefully snapped off one of the knobs and part of the circuit board attached to it snapped. I'm wondering if there's a more or less easy way to fix this, such as a short circuit around the timer, or perhaps even create a new makeshift dial. I'm a PCB novice, so any tips or re-directions would be great. Thanks!

Is it possible to modify this watt dial to work with less current? Answered

I've got a few of these watt dials that I would love to use in a project, however, they will not be reading wattages and will rather be controlled with Arduino. Right now they are set up to read up to 3750 w at 125v, which is much more power than I can source with an Arduino or would be achievable with this project.  The way it is set up is that current goes through the magnetic coil and creates a magnetic field perpendicular, attracting a small magnetic block (slightly visible in the photo). Would simply rewrapping the coil with thinner magnet wire in more coils work?

On a 3 button mouse...

Is it possible to replace the IR receivers from the xy axis's, with a rotary encoder from the scroll wheel? Is it just a matter of removing the IR receivers and putting in scroll encoder dials from other mouses? Now on top of that same idea, can you use pots instead of the rotary scrollers? I cannot find a pinout from a scroll wheel or a IR receiver anywhere...one of these would be nice also. The mice I'm speaking of are the early type non lit underneath. However a workup of both types wouldn't hurt as this will help with the newer stuff. End result being able to use 3 separate dial axis and buttons from one HID mouse board.?

XBOX 360 Network Configurations..with a twist

Courtesy of Dr.Professor Jake Biggs, I was able to be innovative with my XBOX 360 and share my dial-up connection with my 360 through my computer. (The instructable can be found here.) However, seeing as I have a unique case, I thought this would be the best medium to use in looking for an answer. So let me explain my situation. Through much effort, I was able to procure the know-how of using my cell phone (LG Env3, not the touch though) as a modem. It is able to give me 7.2 Mbps at all times of the day and night via USB. I then realized it sets it up as a dial-up connection and decided to search out a way to share that connection with my XBOX 360 so as to get XBOX Live. Thanks to Jake Biggs, I was able to succeed in this endeavor. Now I am wondering if there is any way possible to open the appropriate ports under Firewall settings in order to get an Open NAT setting rather than a Moderate one. For those of you who play XBOX Live, you know how frustrating it is to not have an Open setting. Also it would be much appreciated if someone could help me out with the IP addressing. Many thanks to any who come by and put in their 2 cents about this. I'm open to any suggestions or theories.

Awesome stuff you can do with high-speed internet?

So I recently thought up the idea that I can get free high speed internet at the computers at the public library in town (I can only get dial-up at my house). I have to ride my bike a few kilometers to get into town but I can get like 100 KB/s!! Gah, I wish I'd thought of this a long time ago. When I went in yesterday I just downloaded a bunch of crap. I got 60 MB of stuff, mostly podcasts, in about ten minutes. That would've taken me over five hours to get on my dial-up. But is there any thing else that I should try, other than just downloading a buttload of stuff? I've never had broadband, so I'm kinda just dumbfounded by the possibilities.

Is there a (easyish) way to make a custom USB HID for Windows? Answered

Hello, I just came across a project that has inspired me to make a small version of my own and wanted to see if I would be able to do it before I start buying.  Original project: http://imgur.com/a/DyQZL I want to create a small 4 - 10 button array, potentially with a dial/knob for audio volume etc for my Windows machine. I am currently struggling to find out how I would get the buttons to communicate with the computer... would it be through some sort of Arduino board? Or something else? And then how I would assign custom functions to each individual button/dial/switch. I have attached a (very basic and probably incorrect) diagram in order to try and show what I want to make. Any ways, thanks for any help you can provide :)

Help! LED series with Speaker

I recently got a little old stereo which I've been cleaning up/painting/tuning/etcetera. To me this thing is just so darn cute and I got really excited when I noticed some LEDs under the speaker grates. However they only light up when the volume dial is up to 9 or so, and the stereo is just way too loud! 1-2 on the dial is what I would consider a medium volume level, and don't see myself ever going much higher. I would like a way to fix the dial discrepancy, but I feel that I can live with it. What I'm really after is a way to get the LEDs on at a normal volume level. Ideally pulsing with the music(like they can do now.) I've included a picture of the circuitry. Let me know if you'd like a picture from the other side and I can take it out. I'm a super novice at this stuff. It seems like the LEDs are in a series(btw, each little circuit board is home to three leds, for a total of 12) but that the whole series is actually parallel to the speaker itself? Or is it all in series? Anyway, my first thought was to leave the blue wires going from the LEDs to the speaker, but to move the black 'power' wires to the end of the last LED series so that the power would go all the way through the LEDs before getting to the speaker. Is that a bad idea? haha. I'd rather not burn these LEDs out since they match the colors of the stereo. What do you think? Thanks in advance! Diane

Optical Image Stabilization

Hi everyone, I have a little awkward question here but I am sure someone who knows a little bit more about electronics can give me good advice. I took apart the lens from a consumer video camera and took out the Optical Image Stabilization module in an effort to figure out how it works and possibly hijack the signal so I can control the movement. In the camera this module is getting the signal from the accelerometer so it knows how to engage the two electromagnets and counteract the movement (shaking). What I have done is take the leads that go into it and try to fake what gyro sends to this element. So far I have noticed that when I short 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 the element goes to one side or up. So I put a potentiometer on it (2K ohm) and it gives me some control by turning the dial, but not good enough. Has anyone any idea how can I achieve a gradual movement of this lens element vertically and sideways with a slider or dial of some sort? Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Could a spare dsl modem be reversed, providing a dail tone and 56k? This is a better option for me than all the other methods mentioned because its automated and more like using actual dial-up.
