What do you think about this dish as a WiFi signal booster? Answered

Hello everybody, I am in the process of setting up wireless internet at home, but am still a complete novice in this field. I have just bought a ZyXEL G-202 USB wireless adapter and I am making an antenna of sorts following some instructables as we speak. On my laptop I usually get 1-2 stripes at most when it comes to signal strength, so I was planning to do some piggybacking with my desktop. :) (hey, internet is not cheap here in the Balkans. :P) Anyway, I live in the capital where we have many Cafes and institutions providing free wireless, so why not make the most of it, it's not illegal here. :) The only problem is, I live in an block of flats; so many surrounding buildings tend to block and corrupt the signal. For instance, in my room (using an Acer laptop with built-in wireless) I get a list of 5-6 free (read: unsecured) APs, but the signal is so weak, it's good for nothing. :( Now, having examined my options, I was planning to make an antenna and put it on the roof of the building. But, when I climbed to the top, I found this old abandoned satellite dish SEE PHOTO (I asked around the building and nobody knows who it belongs to. Additionally, it's very run down as you can see, and the cables are torn out, so I was planning on claiming it. :p). Now, my questions are: 1. Can anyone tell me if it's a good idea to use this dish as an antenna, if I weather proof my USB receiver and mount it on the focal point of the dish? (Line of sight (aerial) distance from it to the nearest free wifi hotspot is approx. 600 meters) 2. Is there a possibility that my USB will get too hot, maybe catch fire, because of the signal boost? (Maybe this is a dumb question, but I really don't know much about these things) 3. Finally, I would also need an advice in regard to the cables needed. I already downloaded the "How to extend your USB using UTP" instructable, but since the cable should be about 60 meters long, is there a way to make it not loose too much signal? Thank you all for reading this, and thank you in advance for your advice. Any type of help is welcomed. :)

I need to build a dish for a friend so he can get WiFi from about 200 meters. I have several dishes to work with my problem is the antenna will be at least 30 feet from the computer. I will use this linksys usb  i would like input on the idea of a usb to cat 5 to stretch the usb cable? should i power the linksys from a powered hub ? the build will be posted on instructables when done and i will give credit due. my parabolic gets about a 14 db increase from a WiFi usb thumb it just puts the thumb into the sweet spot of the dish and is not for the outdoors. I an open to any and all suggestions tomorrow i will post what my db are from the site .

A Use for old Bell Satellite Dishes?

We have a few old but working Bell Satellite dishes with LNB with them. We are an amature Radio operator and wondering what we could do with them??

Question by emit   |  last reply

So I'm trying to find the focal point of a satellite dish.

The dish is oval, and I am not sure if it is parabolic/spherical. Here is a picture, with measurements: http://s753.photobucket.com/albums/xx180/EternityTransfer/ I'm not too sure how this dish focuses, as it seems that vertical waves will be focussed differently to horizontal ones, due to the oval shape and that the depths are different depending on which axis is measured. I ideally want to make a parabolic microphone from this dish. There seems to be a focal point about 60cm from directly above the center of the dish, but when viewed from very off-centre angles, the dish seem to have other points too. How would I determine the "optimal" one? It is coated in a thin layer of aluminium foil, which I put on to reflect light when finding the focal point. Unfortunately there are no serial/part numbers, and the dish is missing its feed horn and support so I can't approximate the focal point form there or from datasheet(s). Any help would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: Oh and the dish originates in South Africa, and is stamped with a number which looks like a date of manufacture: 19950610. Googling the number yielded no results so its probably a date.

Chicken mesh and plywood radio/wifi reflector dish.

Haven't quite the time to do a proper instructible for this, but in case anyone finds it useful: http://solarflower.blogspot.com/2011/07/chicken-mesh-and-plywood-radiowifi.html Has schematics, 3d models and construction instructions. Cost about NZ$20 in materials (plywood, mesh, cable ties, screws), took a couple days to make, but really only because of the lack of proper power tools. Works real good.

Is it possible to connect a usb cable to a laptop Wlan card and attache it to a dish for a stronger wifi signal?

I want to be able to take the mobile card, water proof it. Attache it to the back of the dish, run an antenna from the front also connected to the the cable with a power hookup. The idea is to raise the wifi signal as well as place the unit anywhere in the house to get a strong db. I was in Puerto Rico a few months ago and because the homes are sometimes built into the side of a hill the signals are weak. This challange should be easy but cheap and can be built with things that are availiable.  Broken computers, wires, discarded sat dish and batteries.

Would I be able to extend an amplified antenna's range with a satellite dish?

Hi all, I have a small portable T.V. that will only work when tethered to a converter box. I noticed that when I attached a rabbit ear antenna to the "TV OUT" port on the box, I was able to get signal from the box wirelessly from a few feet away. I had a crazy idea that if I bought an amplified antenna, replaced the LNB on a satellite dish with it, and aimed it at the satellite closest to Earth, I would be able to have the converter box signal bounce back to the T.V. Is this even possible?

Wireless CameraI? Answered

Hi, is there anyway to attach a camera to a ROV, robot, RC car/plane? I was thinking maybe using like a radio transmitter to transmit the signal or whatever. Also accepting non-radio ideas. Oh, and the smaller the better, and long antennas=not an option. (Maybe a dish, but no antenna, atleast not the long kind).

Long Range Wifi Antenna

Can anyone recommend a good instructable to boost the reception range for my computer's wifi device? I know there are tons of them on here already, I just need to know which ones might have the longest range. Another thing is what design would be best. The kind involving a parabolic dish/mesh to direct signals to a usb dongle. One that is more of an omni direction antenna. One that makes use of one of the old sattelite tv dishes sitting in the garage. Requesting advice, comrades.

How can I boost satellite internet signal for laptop housed in building located fair distance from dish

Hello. First time question-poser. I need really basic information (no freaky-tech-talk, please). How do I summarize? Dial-up, broadband through cell phone provider, DSL ( although discovered our location is too far out), and now satellite internet through Hughesnet. Iffy at best. Here is my dilemma: I need to boost the satellite internet signal for my laptop that will be located in my new handy-dandy office (when it is finallly constructed: a month or so) on the back of the property? Haven't measured the distance but more than a hop, skip, and jump. More like 100 hops, skips, and jumps. May have old Dish dish as was a suggestion on a page that I can't get back to now that I am officially a member, thank you very much. I know way more about this internet thing than I want and not enough to help my situation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Freesat TV setup.? Answered

I want to set up three Freesat boxes in our home, unfortunately our dish only has one cable running from it & is not exactly accessible being attached to the chimney stack. I know that it is possible to replace the UDC on a dish to serve extra rooms what I need to know is if it is possible to add a splitter box to the incoming cable to split off to extra rooms each with it's own Freesat box? I know it can be done with cable TV as our crews used to do it when I ran operations for a cable installation company so I am hoping that I can use similar splitters for Freesat. Any equipment recommended would have to be in the UK or available online. Thanks in advance for your help folks.

Fabric cover for flash modifier - what's your idea?

After doing extensive web searches it is clear that no one makes a flash modifier / photo light reflector that meets my needs. The unit I have in mind would be the general shape of a small photo umbrella (about 16" in diameter), but it would function like a beauty dish. I want it to be collapsible and compact, yet durable enough to withstand many location shooting sessions. I have used the following basic frame construction technique on other projects and know that it will work for this one - I will solder together a reinforced (beauty dish shaped) frame structure that will be made out of small diameter brass welding rod and then add connection bracketing that will allow the photo reflector to be dismantled for transport. During my initial planning stages I thought I would just sew up a fabric cover (white on the inside, black on the outside) so that it would wrap around the frame on both sides. But then I realized that this was a very complex sewing job and that an easier method of covering this dish shaped frame might be to use heat shrinkable RC aircraft covering fabric. When I researched these materials on the web I discovered that they were very thin (just what you would want on a small airplane) and really wouldn't take any degree of wear and tear like you might expect during a photo shoot. So here's the question - what kind of fabric covering would be ideal for this photo reflector? It needs to be strong, lightweight, very flexible so that it can be molded around the contours of the reflectors frame and it should be paintable - white on the inside and black on the outside. Thanks for your suggestions
