disk rom to ram Answered

Hello, I know it is illegal to rip a disk, but when a disk is processed, and it is decrypted, and put onto ram. So, how is that any different from using cleanrip, and having it stored to a ram disk (not harddrive). It is rom to ram action just like a console.

Xbox Disk changer? Answered

I had an idea for a xbox disk changer, considering my extreme laziness. Basically, It would be an old music disk changer with the same xbox style disk drive in it. The drives ribbon cable would connect from the changer to the xbox, then I'd record the disk switch (up & down) IR signal, and put it in my xbox controller. like www.instructables.com/id/Done/ . So to sum it up, I want to make a 6 disk xbox changer and put the remote in my controller. What I'm asking is how much of a hassle, and even if this is even possible. Thanks in advance                   ~Nameless~

Apple floppy disk?

Hi,    I have been searching for a way to get the info from some floppy disks that were used on an Apple format computer in the early 90's. The disks are 3.5's. I have a disk drive. I have tried to find a converter  program online but none seem to apply to this.  I can't get them on the PC because if they are formatted they lose the data. Does anyone know a way to convert the data to PC inexpensively?    Thanks Much,   Savex

Rainbow Video Disks?

Anyone remember those "Rainbow Video Disks"? The bits of A4 paper that could store up to 450 GB of data? What ever happened to those? Are they available somewhere or did they just die? If anyone knows of some way of storing files on paper (via 2d barcode or something) I'd be greatful.

LED disk monitor

I'm thinking of making an LED based hard drive monitor that will show the % of free space. My thoughts are either an Electric Imp or a Spark Particle wifi controller and then some kind of OSX script that runs  on my server to read the disk usage and push it to a web server. I'll be using APA102 or LPD8806 strips. Any thoughts or suggestions? Cheers.

Floppy Disk Converter?

How does a Floppy Disk Converter work? Heres my problem. I have recently bought a laptop which has Windows Vista. I have an old desktop computer with Windows 98SE. I have no floppy disk drive on the laptop. I want to save the material on the floppy disks onto a USB memory stick. I bought a USB that works for Windows 98SE only to find that you need to download drivers for it from the Internet before it will work. So I plugged my Broadband connection (which is from Vodafone) into the desktop computer to get an Internet connection only to find that the Internet is too new a version for Windows 98SE to read so therefore I cant download the drivers. Also I thought I could save to CD and then put the CD into the laptop to save them to the hard disk but the desktop only has a CD-ROM whereas the laptop has CD-RW. So that wont work either. So I was wondering if a Floppy Disk Converter would be the answer to my problem. Like do you just insert a floppy and a USB into the Floppy Disk Converter and transfer the files. Do you need to connect it to a computer. Sorry for rambling on but I have so many questions about it and I really want to know before I go out and buy one only to find that it is also useless to me. Thanks

Boot disk error?

I recently built two computers with amd fx-4300 processors, geforce 650 ti video cards, generic 4Gb memory, generic power supplies and GIGABYTE 78LMT-S2P motherboards. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on the systems and began installing various programs I needed. When I was done for the day I shut down the computers and turned off the powerstrip. The next day when I went to start them up, I was getting a boot error. After inserting an Ubuntu live disk into the computer, I checked the hard drive, which opened up no problem and still contained all of the files from the os. The rule out the software I was installing, I reinstalled Linux on both computers, and rebooted, after which point there seemed to be no problem, until I turned off the powerstrip again and I got another boot error when I went to turn them back on. Thinking it might be the disk I was using to install linux, I burned another disk with the same os and tried that, and the problem persisted. The fact that it happened on both systems leads me to beleive that it isnt a hardware defect, but possibly and incompatibility between hardware parts, or a bios issue. Has anyone else ever encountered a situation like this where the os doesn't load after the power supply is switched on and off? If so, what causes it and what can I do to fix it? Edit: It seems that it actually fails to boot every time it is shut down, though it works fine when it is only rebooted. Edit#2: Interestingly enough, if i run a hard disk check from the live dvd, and then reboot with the disk in, it loads from the hard drive, but then after the next shutdown, it does the same thing Edit#3: After doing a disk check and it says no errors, it says to click a button to reboot. When I do this it gives me this message after it reboots, "Errors were found while checking the disk drive for /. Press F to attempt to fix the errors, I to ignore, S to skip mounting, or M for manual recovery" on the one computer I hit f to automatically fix it, which isn't a permanent fix because the drive coninues to have problems, but will boot after i hit f, and then not after i shutdown again. On the other computer, I hit m, and it gave me the message, "Root filesystem check failed. A maintanence shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system." The shell is from the hard drive, not the cd.

Disk boot error? Answered

Last night, I wanted some files off my laptop drive, so I stuck it in an external enclosure and plugged it into my desktop (whilst on). I then turned off the desktop without unplugging my laptop drive and turned it on again today, forgetting to unplug it. I have USB booting enabled, so it tried to boot from the laptop drive and as I was out of the room when it was booting, it entered the recovery partition as the hardware is incompatible. I have done this before, so I just turned off my computer, unplugged the drive, and restarted. Instead of booting from my primary internal drive, it got stuck on the post screen. It detected it, but wouldn't go any further. I then thought that it was still looking for the USB drive, so changed the boot order and removed usb boot, same problem. Removing my primary drive just returned the error "disk boot error, insert boot drive and press enter to continue", so I inserted the primary hard drive (I have it in a hot-swap bay, so it can easily be removed, although being my primary hard drive, not "hot"). After doing so, it kept returning a similar error. I then figured that it was still looking for my laptop drive as a primary boot device, so I cleared CMOS with the jumper and after setting it up again, disabling every other bootable interface except the sata port my primary drive is connected to, and it still just gets stuck on post. I have left it about 10 mins and still get the same problem. It is also hard to enter BIOS or any of the other utilities, as it waits until after post, so I have to either remove all drives or insert the laptop drive in it's enclosure. How can I get my desktop to boot from the primary hard drive again? Inserting the install disk is also hard, because I don't actually have a DVD drive yet, so I installed Windows 7 extended trial through a memory stick from my laptop with a disk drive. I have since deleted it off my memory stick, and my laptop is now in pieces hooked up to my monitor/keyboard/mouse instead of my desktop. It is on it's back and the hard drive bay is open in case I need it again. My BIOS is award with additional features on a Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 board. Both drives are Hitachi sata-II drives, one being 3.5" and one being 2.5".

Distinguish glass hard disk platters from aluminum without marring the reflective surface? Answered

I have hundreds of hard disk platters from disassembled hard drives.  Some are made of glass, some are made of aluminum.  The glass ones, when flexed, shatter into thousands of razor shards which screech across the room. I would like to avoid that in the future.  I only want to use the aluminum ones, but I don't want to mar the reflective surface. I've thought of weighing them, but the platters some from many manufacturers and eras and so the weights won't be consistent.  Magnets don't attract glass or aluminum. Does glass float? (I'm guessing no.)  Is the reflective surface transparent? (I'm guessing no again, but maybe a strong light would work?) There has to be a way....

Switching to alternate Mac partition without keyboard? Answered

I just noticed on my iMac that somehow the default partition was set from my Mac partition to the Boot Camp partition -- which currently has nothing on it. This is a major problem, because someone decided to restart the computer, and as you know, when a partition with nothing on it is loaded, no drivers for my bluetooth keyboard and mouse loaded. I got past the "No bootable device available -- Please insert bootable disk and press any key to continue" by turning off the computer and booting it from a Windows 7 disk. Unfortunately, the disk isn't compatible with the partition format, so I can't even load Windows to reset the default partition. I was going to try a Vista disk, but alas, the eject key is incapacitated due to the lack of drivers. I'm most likely to buy a new USB keyboard, but does anyone know how to switch partitions without a keyboard?

If someone has a flash disk plugged in their computer and i want to plug my flash disk in the same computer, keep it there for a second so that it copies all the contents of the other flash AUTOMATICALLY AND SILENTLY, AND OF A SPECIFIC FILE TYPE ONLY, or maybe some other criteria (like: copy all pdf or ppt files from all over the computer whether from another flash or from the hardisk itself), how can that be done? i've already seen THIS TUTORIAL, and tested it on windows 7, it's not silent and it's not automatic and it doesn't copy from another flash disk but from the user's profile only

Can I get a 5 1/4 floppy disc drive to work under Windows XP?

Is there any more suggestion?

Hi, I am seriously considering the purchase of EASEUS data recovery wizard or Partition Table Doctor and have some questions, I will give you the background of my problem - I was loading Password Pros (password recovery software) and during the loading process (when it was in the middle of loading) the computer was accidently rebooted by me. Now every time I turn on my computer it repeatedly reboots itself and never gets past this point. Just before the computer is ready to shut itself down and reboot itself again, it gives the message "Bad image check sum olecnv32.dll c0000221". Is there any more suggestion?

BBC Magazine readers give 40 ways we still use floppies

This fun article from the BBC website showcases readers' responses to Sony ceasing production of floppy disks.  There are 40 picked responses, many of which just talk about legacy hardware that still uses them for data storage, but some of them are easily 'ible-worthy.  Highlights: 1. I regularly buy floppy disks. I own a pub with a retro theme and I use them as beer mats. 4. Not as much a user as an owner of a great many floppies, I was planning to tile the roof of my shed with them (using the two existing corner holes to take the nails) until my wife forbade it. 13. I put handles on them and sell them as spatulas. I sell thousands of them a year. 18. I've always used an old floppy disk as an ice scraper for the car, just the right combination of rigidity and flexibility. Just don't use the side with the metal sleeve on. They last about a year before they need replacing from my endless pile from the 1990s. 28. Floppy disks are ideal "floppy table" stabilisers, whether in the dining room or on the patio. They are also good for wedges filling in gaps where wood has to be cut. I have also embossed them in a cement pathway in a splendid "talked about feature" as they are of no use whatsoever for storage. Enjoy!

Hard disk platters all the same? Anatomy??

Found a broken HDD of 1 Tb today. Always good to take apart for the magnets. The platters were 'slightly' warped; must have been thrown around... The highly reflective platters can always be looped on a string, to chase away crows from my garden.  By now, I have several dozens of old platters.  I was thinking, apart from practicalities like dust and gentle handling, could it be possible to just substitute the platters with  other (old= much lower capacity) platters?  The 1 Tb mechanism, including the heads, would want to format the platters for a Tb amount of storage I assume. If the platters are mechanically identical (I notice they don't have a standard thickness), could this work?  Does anyone know what alloys are used, are they coated, with what??? I see no attraction when I hold a supermagnet to it, but there ought to be some kind of magnetic carrier on it.... The shine on the platters might suggest some exotic metal coating; palladium or something like that....???

Request For Recommendations: Disk/partition imaging software

. I'm having some problems upgrading WindowsXP to SP3 on my daughter's computer. Fresh install. I can get the OEM WinXP Pro SP1a and the drivers installed OK. SP2 installs without any problems. So far, all software installs without a hitch under SP2. Upgrading to SP3 causes Windows Update to fail (updates download, verify, and attempt to install) and I can no longer install programs. I've tried installing SP3 at several places in the process, starting after the SP2 upgrade.. I'm looking for a free program to create/restore a disk image of a HDD or partition. I want to create snapshots after each step, so I can do a quick restore if the experiment fails. There are several free apps available, but none seem to meet my requirements. The direct-to-disc feature seems to be one feature missing from all of the freebies.. Anybody know of a free imaging app that will: Environment:run installed under Windows, but must be able to image the boot/system drive/partitionand/orno-install run under Windows from CD/DVD/USBand/orBoot/run any OS from CD/DVD Image files:prefer direct to CD/DVD.save, in CD- or DVD-sized chunks, to another HDD/partition (same HDD/Prtn would be nice as would using LAN drives)compression of data would be nice. Ignoring empty space is required.where possible, use images/compression/&c; that will be compatible with other programs. Misc:free!First data disc should be bootable (created when saving to CD/DVD) and have app to restore image. Booting from a separate idsc would be OK.browsing files/folders in image would be nice, but not required. . TIA

How to resolve laptop low disk space problem?

Do you know how I can extend my laptop system partition space? In fact, recently, this system partition just gets a low disk space problem and has only about 5% of free space left. Since this low disk space problem has stopped me installing some programs there several times, I think perhaps I can extend this partition space with the free space of the rest partitions, like D, E or F. Is my idea workable? What am I supposed to do for extending this partition space? Any idea or suggestion will be greatly appreciated here!

How to recover lost data from a hard-disk ?

Hello everybody, I really need your help in this problem ... Few days ago, my uncle needed to recover his laptop, but he had about 250 GB of important data which I could temporarly take on mine, w transfered every thing using a 16GB flash memory and an old 40 GB hard-disk, and he recovered his laptop and every thing was good then we started to roll back and retransfer the files to his laptop. Here came the problem, the images was transferred to the hard-disk, and then when we connected the hard-disk to his laptop, we were surprised that the hard-disk is empty, totally empty ! So, I tried EaseUS data recovery, Data recovery wizard, recuva, 7 data recovery suit, -and another program i don't remember- on both my laptop and the hard-disk but they get me every thing except these images ! Please help me these images are very important to my uncle and he can't get any another copy of them, any advice is acceptable and thank you for any help :)
