Arduino Drone?

Hi, I would like to make an Arduino- based drone, but don't know where to start.  I would like it to be a quadrotor, but still have the ability to carry out automated tasks, and have a long-range (1-2 miles) communication system that I can control from my PC.  I can program Arduino, and C# proficiently any help?  Thanks.

Drone not turning on? Answered

I have an Ardupilot 2.6 from 3DRobotics on their quad frame. I am using their power distribution board now instead of using one that I made myself. Before I changed the power board, my drone was working perfectly. Now when I try to arm it (enable the motors) it does not work. The light on the APM 2.6 blinks red when disarmed and is solid red when armed. It only blinks when I try to arm it. I am using a Turnigy 9x transmitter with a turnigy RX. I have tried replacing the RX and it does the same thing. I have a separate battery pack for the receiver because it seemed like it was not getting enough power with the 3DRobotics power board. Could it be a problem with the transmitter?

I read in the desciption for this contest: Individuals and small groups (from universities and hackerspaces) will be creating projects around airborne autonomous and radio controlled vehicles. So does it only count if you enter with an instructable for a flying autonomous vehicle or does any kind of radio controlled project count (like a car or a boat)?

Google boss concerned about privacy??

One coolest pieces of technology in the hands of independent Makers is the UAV; students and hobbyists can exceed military spec for drones and quadrocopters for a fraction of the cost.  So it concerns me when Eric Schmidt, head of the company that put millions of people's homes online without asking, and has been fined in several countries for harvesting personal data via wifi, trys to influence American policy makers, invoking the demon called Terrorists Might, so that the use of UAVs is restricted on thd grounds of "protecting privacy". Cheap Arduino Drone Project

Hi there  :)  , Right now, I am busy on a project, called "The HoboDrone" to make a cheap ass drone. It is my intention to make a DIY guide for everyone. The next problem that need to be solved right now in my project, is to process all information that comes and goes through this drone, through the Arduino. My question is if it's possible that an Arduino handles next tasks/can deliver enough CPU-power for: - Reading the sensors - Run the code to stabilize the drone - Control the electromotors (output from stabilizing code) - Get input through RC-signals and control the electomotors I did not start writing the code for stabilizing the drone, but there are plenty of examples out there, like the bluecopter: https://github.com/baselsw/BlueCopter (This code doesn't deal with RC-input from a controller on the ground) I have read a similar DIY project which used a Raspberry Pi, which took care of a part of the code. (https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Drone-Pi/) Is it possible to only use an Arduino in a Drone, or should I work in the direction of a coöperation between an Arduino and Raspberry Pi ? Thanks in advance!

F330 camera drone help

Hello. I have ordered an F330 frame kit for a drone i wanna build. Basically its that frame because of its compact size, but i want it to have a lot of power since it will have to carry couple of different cameras, including a Gopro, and some mirrorless cameras. Would also like to have a decent flight time(30min) and decent range. Motors should be oveely powerful since i am experimenting with cameras etc, so i dont want it to struggle. Speed or performance isnt an issue, just the heavy payload. What motors should i use, that would fit the 330 frame? Also what battery and transmitter

Micro drone construction help

For a school project a partner and I are attempting to build a self controlling quadcopter. It should be able to use a specific input from a photo transistor and the be able to navigate on its own. The only problems that I can see running into at the moment are finding an atmega compatible rotor controller, and that not including the propellers it is going to be under two inches (5.08 cm). I would appreciate any assistance possible in finding a motor controller of this size, and will keep this post up to date with our project.

Increase drone's run-time with multiple batteries system? Answered

Hello guys, this is my first question, so, first of all, sorry for any gramatical mistakes. I recently bought a drone (a cheap one) with a shameful autonomy of about 10minutes of flight. It uses a 3.7v 500mAH LiPo battery for that. I also have 4 extra batteries of same caracteristics (3.7v 500mAH). Let's say that the weight will not influence on the flight, so, what I really wanna know is: How do I attach these 5 batteries in one only system to increase the drones run time? See this image, please. I wonder if this may damage the drone. Another one: Could I just buy a, let's say, 3.7v 3.000mAH and hope that it increases the autonomy in 6x (Since its 6x more mAH) or it will just blow up the hole system? Thank you in advance!

How do i identify drone camera wires?

Hi I have a small drone which was run over, but the camera survived and i'd like to re-purpose the little camera. The camera has only three wires on a connector, it has a space at the back for a micro sd card too. On the pcb where the three wireds are connected the black is marked vb-, the red is marked vb+ and the blue wire is marked P12. Obviosly vb+ & - are easy to desypher. Can anyone help me identify the P12 connection? Would this be a trigger wire of some sort and how do i connect it to actually trigger between capture picture/capture video/off? Also, is it safe to assume that if connected correctly, that this camera can work as a stand alone camera with no other interface being that it has a slot for micro sd card? Thanks in advance for any help :)

Multirotor used as a signal relay?

So in my years since first asking a question about electronics on here i have learned a whole lot. So much so that i am working on plans to build my own multirotor, rc car, and control system all from scrap and open source parts. Everything will be arduino controlled for simplicity (i think it will be easier this way) and i would like to use the OrangeRx radio modules.\ So my question is this; if i wanted to put an fpv system on my car and drive it long distances through a neighborhood, how difficult would it be to have a drone follow the car and act as a relay beacon for my transmitter. I know i could easily get the drone to follow the car by using gps but I have no ideas on how to make it a relay, or if thats even economically feasible on a hobby scale.

Quadcopters on pcDuino

Fter researching auxiliary processors, we decided to use the pcDuino for controlling our drone. The choice was an obvious one because it was not only the lightest of the choices, but also one of the least expensive, and in addition was running Linux as well as providing a wireless card. On arrival we quickly connected it to a monitor, but the adapters we purchased did not work. So as result we shaved rubber off of one of the adapters so that it fit properly in the monitor to connect to the port.  We were able to gather some of the peripherals(USB hub, mouse, and keyboard) key from our computer department for the project. http://esdartemis.wordpress.com/2014/01/15/new-pcduino/

Simple, speaker question. Answered

Hello, All I want to do is create a very low, and reasonably audible hum or drone from this speaker ; about as loud as a person humming as hard as they can before their throat hurts and they start coughing. Is it possible to avoid an amplifier and just run a voltage into it so that it just makes a single tone as described ? If so: I found this big broken speaker in the road. As you can see, the Cone is missing a section, but the surround and spider are intact. The cone is credit card thickness plastic. Is it feasible to just patch it up with some similar plastic and contact adhesive; it does not have to be a good sound, just a drone. I realise that my grasp of electronics is child like and readily accept the impending abusive comments and links to the Google homepage. Thank you  FOH

Code to start/stop and adjust speed for Arduino Uno to 1 single drone motor

I'm hoping I can get this answer as simple as possible - I'm sure what Im asking has been done a million times over so I'd just love to be able to copy and paste the code - HOWEVER I really don't know what to do next anyways.Attached images: The set up as a whole 6s LiPo battery - 6,000mAh 80A ESC - "Mystery" brand Drone motor; U7 T-Motor brand, 420KV, 3-8s LiPo battery Arduino Uno Wires connected from ESC to Arduino Uno: Black to: GND White to: ~6 digital pin Red (grey connector wire from arduino to esc) to: 5V FIRST: I have it set up in 'a' way that will allow this to function/interact correctly. I do not need an accelerometer and I am wanting to turn it on/off-start/stop and adjust speeds (for all intense and purposes) through my desktop via the USB port. So I want to be able to do all of this through the Arduino create agent editor thing on my desktop. NEXT: So even if/when someone is so nice enough to show me the code in such a way I can just copy and paste into the editor - I really don't know what to do next. How do I get it to go? I'll have to adjust numbers in certain sections of the code in editor. I'll need some help with this, e.g. this number means this - that means that and adjusts the speed accordingly, etc.But basically; How do I turn this set up on and off in the editor controlled from my desktop. Thanks AND please let me know what I can clarify.

Car power from car batteries while not in a car?

I bought a car battery just so I could take it with me camping and charge my cell phone. Here is the problem: car powered devices are designed to be charged in a car while the car is running. The voltage of car power is 14.4 volts and the voltage of a fully charged car battery is 12.6 volts. The car battery will charge my cell phone because it is low amperage and does not drop the voltage very much (only if the car battery is mostly full), but if I try to connect my inverter and power higher-amp devices the inverter will beep and not work because it senses low voltage. One way I can get my battery to work is if I had a DC step up transformer. A car battery ranges between 0 and 12.6 volts. I need something which can supply a constant 14.4 volts as the battery is drained. Another option is if I got two batteries and hooked them together in series for 24 volts. If I did that I would need a transformer which could convert 24 to 14.4 volts as the batteries drained. So what is the best way to do this? This is for my camera drone: a DJI Mavic Air. If I could charge my drone batteries with a car battery I could fly a lot longer. Thanks-Jacob

QUICK: Ideas for getting drone out of tree! [EDIT: already got it down, but ideas are welcome!]

Ok, so I have built up my $400 FPV quadcopter, and just last night, I was able to get it in the air working flawlessly! I then proceeded to have fun with FPV on a small TV monitor. I quickly got the hang of it, and decided to venture up and around the back yard. However, there was one problem I have been neglecting, which of course, it bit my ass as you can tell from the title. From countless hours of debugging and stress-testing previous weeks to find the intermittent issue with the ESCs, I finally pinned down the issue and was able to reprogram the ESCs, as well as calibrate them properly. (turned out when I first built the quad many moones ago, I unknowingly entered programming mode in the past and changed stuff I had no intention to change!) So eventually, I punctured one of the cells on the battery, and did not realize until a few days ago. I found after close inspection that it was most likely due to a crash which dislodged the battery from the strap, and it scraped up against the video transmitter shielding and heatsink. I removed and discarded the damaged cell, so I was left with a 2S battery. It is BARELY enough to lift the quad. And very slowly at that. However, I could not wait for the new battery to come! I just HAD to fly it to see if I got it to work! :D So today, I have been practicing full-on FPV, and unknowingly flew above a tree. I thought I was next to our chicken house,  and was looking directly at it, hoping to land directly in front of it. However, I did not know I was as close as I was to the tree directly below me. By the time I saw it it in the mobius camera, a slammed the throttle as high as possible, but by that time it was too late. That stupid 2S battery that I have not bothered to replace just did not have the umph to pop the quad up into the air higher, and as it discharged to below 6.98V based on the video feedback data, and the quad just kept descending even at full throttle due to the voltage being too low to effectively power the motors. So there it went tumbling and got snagged on to a thin limb. I lost remote control, so I could not get it unstuck like I did before from a previous flight. But I still surprisingly had FPV working, with the minimOSD sending down GPS data and battery voltage level. So I get to watch the battery voltage trickle down 1 mv at at time. (Welp, time to pop the kettlecorn and watch the 2S battery progressively deep-discharge and get more damaged by the minute!) It did, however, rise back up to 7.4V unloaded (telling me that the internal resistance must be pretty high, so I would not to too bothered too much to throw away the 2S battery entirely!)  Nor did I bother to watch it to see how low and how long it will take to discharge below the safe limit. I packed up all monitor and ground gear to get it out of the cold. So here it stands; stuck real high. I have tried climbing up 14-18 feet onto the tree, but it was still a good 12 feet up. I tried a rope to the trunk and shook the hell out of the tree. The limb that the quad was stuck on did not move much, and the tree was dampening the vibrations too much, even after hitting a resonance peak (technically a harmonic of the resonant frequency), where I could clearly see 2 "standing waves" in the trunk, but that got tiring real quick, and the winter sun has set and things were getting darker by the minute. I did not budge the quad.  I eventually resorted to shooting the limb with a 22 rifle, and on the 3rd shot, I got it to fall down!!! .......... 3 feet, that is, until it got stuck on an even LARGER branch, and now it is really stuck on it. It is on its side on a small fork in the tree, and it is snagged on that now. I can't shoot the base of the branch to break it, because it is like 4 inches in diameter, and on the forked branch right where it is caught, the quadcopter is sitting directly on! If I shoot it, there is a good chance of hitting the quadcopter and destroying the lipo battery causing it to catch fire, or hit electronics or the camera with the beautiful 1080p HD footage of the crash! Again, shaking the tree violently does not do much to budge it. Perhaps someone in the community has an idea on how to knock it down?

The Bravery of Being Out of Range: A Technological Revolution

The 18th century gave us the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Purpose-built factories for the new industries such as iron and textiles. New and improved methods of transportation, communication and production. It changed the way people lived / worked and it created / inspired a lot of what we still see and use today. This revolution had its negatives too. Jobs were lost to the industrial machines that did it better and faster, the poor and the working classes often had to endure grim living and working conditions. The black gold mined from underground, fuelled our thirst for advancement. Now in the 21st century, we are in the midst of the Technological Revolution. Ubers, drone deliveries, driverless cars and trucks, AI, Google, Facebook, Amazon Alexa, unmanned military vehicles, war by remote control and the bravery of being out of range. The drones, AI, robots and automation may not only take away our jobs, but potentially the need to leave the house or to have any real-world face to face interactions. They could re-define our lives, for better or for worse. Are you fearful? Wary? Or do you embrace the changes going on all around us?

wired video connection from an FPV camera

Could FPV cameras such as the Foxeer Predator Mini or Micro (intended for wireless use on drones) be set up to send a live wired video feed to an android phone or tablet via a micro usb cable of some description? for context, i intend to build a bulky costume which effectively blocks my view out so after googling a bit i found some mentions of people using these (surprisingly cheap) cameras with (very expensive) FPV goggles so i figure i could potentially use a tablet/phone i already have with a long cable connection instead but i don't know if it's possible...

Hi all, Weird one but as part of our Christmas party we want to have a range of competitive games and challenges which we can take part in as groups. The idea here is that we want the finale to be building and flying "something" which can carry a Santa as far as possible and whoever's get's the further wins... I have never bought, made or played with any toy planes, drones, anything that flies etc so I wondered if there was a basic list of items we'd need to put these together? I should imagine we don't want them to take more than a few hours to make in total, and they should be powered by a motor and remote control? Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kate
