Would it be possible to "expand" a regular household printer?

Basically, what i'm talking about is taking apart a normal A4 printer and expading the paper feed and guide rails so it can accomodate paper of any size. The purely mechanical aspect certainly seems doable, although you'd run out of ink a lot faster, and I have no idea how to tackle the software issues. It seems theoretically possible, but i'm not sure about how you'd actually go about it - tips/help and any links would be appreciated.

expanded graphite heat-sink? Answered

Okay , I've searched and searched and cannot find what I'm looking for. Maybe the other diy'ers can help me. 1.What I'm looking for is a heat-sink made of expanded graphite or (carbon, graphite (∥) as it might be known as well) that is actually in the shape of a traditional aluminum heat-sink with the fins and NOT in the shape of thin film as it is very commonly available. I don't even know if it exists or is manufactured by any company. I've tried contacting some companies about it but they have yet to get back to me. The reason I want this is for the tremendous increase in heat conductivity as in this chart shown on this webpage http://physics.info/conduction/ . The application I am trying to use it for needs a raised, elongated surface area to displace heat semi-uniformly, hence why I need fins like a traditional heat-sink instead of the commonly available film expanded graphite online. 2. If it does exist or is able to be manufactured, would it be a ridiculously priced part or would it be a reasonable priced part? (Just doing small scale tests for now so it would be the size of a FET finned sink). 3. From what I've read it seems possible by maybe layering the films into a stacked lattice, keeping heat transfer perpendicular to the lattice, but what are your thoughts all? (I question bonding the layers myself but I don't know if you could hard press the layers together without a bonding agent since any bonding agent being used I believe would reduce the thermal conductivity quite a bit, but I'm not incredibly familiar with expanded graphite). Any and all help would be appreciated from this wonderful community Best regards, Velesh

Help... PCF8574T (Expanding "Nano's" Digital Outputs)

- When I saw my RGB Chromatograph clock my teacher built from a kit  I was so impressed with it I  jumped the gun & ordered the parts so I could make one with an arduino version, I never thought much about it, thats so simple I could do in a few hours no problem except I overlooked one simple thing.... This clock uses six 10mm RGB Leds, two for the hour, two for the minutes & two for the seconds, each led has 3 inputs & 1 ground, thats a total of 18 outputs,  thats not including a few other inputs used for status indicators, along with a few inputs for buttons, the problem is that a Nano doesnt have enough digital outputs & I completely overlooked that fact. Anyways I started looking for I/O expanders when I realized that I have a few 1602 displays & PCF8574T backpacks, I have heard some people claim that it can be used to provide an additional 16 digital outputs, if true then it that would resolve my issue very easy Has anyone done this? or example sketch how I could deploy the PCF8574 this way, for example a blink sketch that defines a pin on the PCF8574 as an outputs & turns on a LED connected to the pin Thank you much...

First project completed...now let's expand it!

My wife is interested in ghost hunting shows like TAPS and Ghost Hunters International. She even joined a local Paranomal Society. The first thing she wanted to buy was an EMF detector for a whopping $175. Now, I don't believe in ghosts, but I support my wife, so instead of buying her an OTS EMF detector, I decided to build her this one. Thanks Computergeek! Oddly, the first thing that popped into my head when I finished building the Arduino EMF detector was a quote from Keano Reeves from Point Break, "I caught my first tube today....Sir." It's appropriate though, in the sense that he was just getting started in the bank robbery investigations. I'm pretty happy with this build...I had a couple of issues in hardware and code that I was able to troubleshoot myself. And it all works! So this was pretty easy, even for a newbie. Now, what I want to do is add a data logger that records values to flash memory. You can probably see where I'm going with this (as a non-believer). If you remove the human element from the situation, is there still paranomal activity? Or put another way, if a tree falls down in the middle of the forest and no one is around to hear it...does it still make noise? If anyone has any ideas, tips, or suggesstions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks for a great online community! LorienD

Accessing SD memory on data logging shield

Hey again, I finished my first project recently and was looking to expand on the design. It's an EMF detector (https://www.instructables.com/community/First-project-completednow-lets-expand-it/) and it's working great. Now, I want to add memory and a USB charger to turn it into an self-contained EMF data logger. The project looks easy enough, but I have a question that I wasn't able to find answers for. Here's the question: Can the memory installed on the data logging shield be accessed through the Arduino USB port? On my cell phone, whenever I plug the USB into my laptop, it connects as a drive. I'd like to do the same thing with the EMF data logger. Or will I just have to remove the SD card every time I want to extract data from it? Thanks LorienD

Why can a function satisfying same boundary conditions as functions Un(x) of a complete set be expanded as ΣCnUn(x)?

This is a question I encountered while reading Introduction to Quantum Theory by Hendrik F. Hameka (Please don't worry, I'm not trying to cheat on my homework, I am just asking out of curiosity). The book states the following:      "It can be shown that a function f(x) that satisfies the same boundary conditions as the functions Un(x) of a complete set can be expanded as f(x) = Σ CnUn(x) ... If we multiply by U*m(x) and integrate, we obtain < Um | f > = Cm " This second part is fairly straightforward because ∫ U*m f(x) dx = ∫ U*m Σ CnUn(x) dx and it follows that < Um | f > = Cn Σ < Um | Un > = Cn Σ δn,m = Cn However, the first part confuses me because I can only justify it when Un(x) = (2π)^(-1/2) e^(inx) (The example of a complete set given in the book, actually) In that case, it can easily be seen that the expression Σ < Un | f > Un(x) is just the Fourier Series expansion of f(x) and thus the result is valid for the particular complete set. However this does not explain why this is valid for all complete sets: "how can you prove that this conclusion is valid not only for this particular complete set, but for all complete sets?" is my question. Thank you in advance for answering! Please feel free to post any questions of your own if you need clarification. Also, please be advised that you should not post responses on the order of "you didn't specify an interval of integration, so your question is impossible!" - if you know enough to answer the question, then you will understand why said interval is not specified, etc. Once again, thanks!

Non SCSI, mega storage device?

So there I was, thinking that I had heard/read somewhere that it was possible to hook up many regular hard drives (IDE, EIDE) together to make up one logical partition that was dynamically expandable. I might be off my rocker, but I think I heard of it somewhere. An example is.. your company is upgrading it's computers, and intends to throw away old hard drives (i.e. 4GB, 20GB hard drives...) If you got your hands on them, you could hook them all together and make an expandable external storage. This would mean that if you have 3 20GB hard drives, you'd have a logical 60GB partition. Your buddy wants to throw away his old 10GB hard drive.. so you get that one and add it. Now you've got a 70GB hard drive. Has anybody ever heard of this idea before? No idea how to make it work, but I think in theory it would be neat.

Would it be possible to have Arduino access a larger store of memory, say from a gutted Flash memory card?

In other words, have it interface with a gutted flash memory card via the i/o connections, and use that as additional memory space for programming controls? If so, this may open up the possibility of expanding a regular Arduino unit into something capable of much more complex tasks.

3D Printing For All

Right after we hear about Ponoko, and their laser-cut designs that you can make and sell, here comes another company that offers the service of making 3D prints via its website Jujups.Their statement:We believe that "everyone has an inherent desire - to design" Design is about self expression. It is about satisfying your desires. Once upon a time only a small portion of humanity could read or write. We would like to say that once upon a time "only a few people could design but, JuJups changed that.JuJups is powered by design technology that structures design in an intelligent way, just as much as CSS and Html structures text and graphic data in an intelligent way so that non-techies can create wonderful blog graphics and web pages that we enjoy today. JuJups will do the same to the world of products.Basically, it's easy 3D printing with templates. They'll expand into more stuff later.A wider range of products will follow in the near future.JuJups is planning in association with ZCorp to expand 3D printing capacity to support the growing demand for customized objects. Customized giftware, memorabilia, toys, etc will soon be added to the list of items that can be custom designed. Many companies have now created opportunities for custom-made products, such as custom printed T-shirts, mugs, magnets etc. however, the customization is mostly in 2D.

Vortex tube should have a supersonic nozzle for efficiency; a simple drilled hole will not allow supersonic flow, right?

Scientific American had an article on supersonic nozzles in Amateur Scientist.  The nozzle needs to first narrow and then widen, so that maximum velocity is reached by the expanding air. The Hilsch tube seems to be very primitive because of details like the primitive nozzle.  Perhaps, the Hilsch tube was designed to have too much friction.  Perhaps, the tube was built to be sure it was inefficient and not very useful.  The tube can only violate the Second Law if it is built with a minimum of friction losses.

Inside the black epoxy case is a 2 lead photocell (not a photodiode or photo-transistor) and a 2 lead LED. This is why the device finds extensive use in audio applications (photocell instead of photodiode). The LED requires about 10-16mA current and the resistance of the photocell varies from 150K up to megohms when the LED is off to under 400ohms when the LED is on." A
