Filtering?

There has got to be a way to filter the new items or searches because it's getting ridiculous. I was just on the new featured instructables and out of the 30 on the first page there were 10 food related, 2 toy related and 2 jewelry related. There were others I'm not interested in but come on.... Toys? Jewelry? FOOD?!?! Especially food. Shouldn't they be on a food site? I don't see how they really belong on a DIY site. I will probably have to live with that but isn't there some way I can filter these things out? I tried using a minus   -food   in the search box and it returned ONLY food articles. I also found another question similar to mine that required using Greasemonkey add-on which I installed but the link to the java script file it needs doesn't work anymore. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Filtering Results

I think I've started to figure out how your sorting works, for instance /type:, /category:_, /keyword:_. But I have a few questions...Is there way to do an OR statement? If I do https://www.instructables.com/tag/type:instructable/category:art/category:food/ (which is an awesome combination, BTW), it shows results for art AND food, is there a way to do art OR food? Also, is there a way to do a without? Say, without the keyword "cool"?

Filter OUT a keyword

Ok, I know you can limit your viewing to a particular keyword, but how would you go about filtering out that keyword? For instance, I don't get the whole knex obsession around here, I don't own any knex, and I never intend to... so I don't want to dig through 40 guns, knives, swords, cellphone holders, etc. just to find something interesting.

Wiring up a filter copasitor?

For my Cold Fusion Project I was told to use a filter copacitor with the isolating transformer and the bridge rectifier.  I have had some trouble understanding this.  The mains AC runs through the isolating transformer and right after that I need to hook up the filter copacitior.  How do I know which is positive and negative.  I know AC alternates between + and - but when I need to hook it up to the rectifier I need to find + and -.  How do I do that?

Is it possible to filter Instructables questions? Answered

There are a few folks who ask questions that I'd really rather not be tempted to answer, since I would have trouble holding to the "Be Nice" policy. It would be better for both me and them if I could tell Instructables not to show their questions to me at all. Call it a killfile, or an anti-subscribe... Is there such a mechanism? (I'm pretty sure the answer is "no", but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.)

Vuvuzela filtering for World Cup

The biggest complaint I keep hearing about the World Cup is about the vuvuzelas, plastic horns that get blown for everything and nothing. This makes me almost glad that I'm missing practically every game because of the broadcast times and the fact that my TV only has bunny ears for reception. Well, PopSci has found that some people are fighting back by filtering out the frequencies of the vuvuzelas at 233 Hz, 466 Hz, 932 Hz, and 1864 Hz. It's a good enough trick that it makes me almost want to upgrade my setup so that I can try it out. Simple Software Can Filter Out That Vuvuzela Whine From World Cup Broadcasts

Noise filter on iPod dock

I recently completed a project where i made my own iPod Touch charging dock for a set of PC speakers. While testing it out i noticed there is some background noise/feedback coming through the speakers any time the iTouch is actually charging. Is there any way i can shield against this interference? Or is the proximity of the headphone jack to the iPod connecter to much of a problem to overcome without alterations to the iTouch itself? I've notice this problem before while listening to my iTouch through it's speaker or headphones when it was plugged into a wall charger or PC. https://www.instructables.com/id/Laptop-Speaker-system-with-iPod-Touch-dock/

what kind of filter would I need to filter out solder fumes? Answered

Would i need a HEPA filter or could i just make a little thing that fit's on a box fan and holds a bunch of activated charcoal. i live in the great up north so i can't open my windows to let the smoke out and doing it in the shop is out of the question because it's so drafty it can't hold heat at all. I'd like to be able to set up a soldering station in my room but the problem with that is the smoke being too noxious, it'd freak my parents out. do they make actual specific filters that can hold onto all the smoke? or is it more along the lines of getting mostly everything but never quite being able to get it all?

Is there a difference between a high pass filter with an op amp and a high pass filter without one? Answered

I'm trying to modify a guitar effects pedal of mine to remove some squeaking and decided that a highpass/low pass combo with some potentiometers to modify the highpass and low pass points (since my pedal emits squeaking at different frequencies on different settings) and I was wondering if I should use a high/low pass with an op amp, capacitors, and resistors - or just a simple resistor and capacitor filter. Does anyone know if either configuration is a detriment to sound quality?

Filtering out certain categories while browsing

Is there a way to filter out certain categories of instructables while browsing? I know that I can choose to only view a particular category using the /category: flag, but I'm trying to figure out how to filter out certain categories while seeing all the rest when browsing the latest instructables. For example, the recent explosion of knitting projects or the k'nex craze a while back. Nothing against either of those types of instructables; I'm just not interested in them, and they're so prolific they kind of drown out everything else. I tried searching for an answer, but I keep coming up with activated carbon filters and guitar noise filters :P Anybody know of a way?

Solder fume extractor with carbon and HEPA filters?

I have been reading about the subject, and most articles tell that carbon filters are good for solder chemicals, fumes and odors, while HEPA filter are designed to remove dust, allergens and micro-organisms from the air. Supposedly, solder fume extractors should use both filters for an efficient filtering of the chemicals. Is this correct? Thanks for your time! How to create a DC power supply filter? Answered

I am programming a microcontroller, and it worked fine. By this time, the microcontroller is powered by the USB port. After programming, i do some testing, i used LM7805 paired with wall wart as the controller's power supply. When using this power supply, the controller's behavior is a little bit unpredictable. Based on observations, the problem is the ripple in the DC supply. I there a filter method or topology that i can use? Note: simple capacitor filter won't work. i have a frequency counter... it reads 0 Hz at the USB and reads 60 Hz at the LM7805 powered by a wall wart.

Does anyone know of a "Paint" filter for Photoshop?

I am trying to do a bit of stylistic work on photos, and I am trying to get a cartoonish look to them. however, I need it to be smooth and bright with few heavy, black outlines. I know of a "paint" function on a video mixer I once used, but being that I have not the 10 grand to drop for such a piece of equipment, that option is out the window. a good example of what I am looking for is DVShades' LiveToon plugin for Final Cut Pro, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a 3rd party filter or a  technique that would replicate this in either GIMP or PhotoShop. for pictures on what the effect looks like, visit http://www.dvshade.com/LTExamples.html

Ultra-simple low pass audio filter? Answered

Is there a way to create an ultra-simple low pass filter? Will not be using it for subwoofer, but to split audio and boost the power for audio-synced leds. Is a split at about 15-200 hz any good? or should it be higher/lower. Mostly looking for bass guitar and some drum to go in this area. I am totally non-audio knowleged, and am beginning my circuit building skills, so yes, i need lots of help. Can i hook this in parallel to speakers and will it not affect sound quality? can i use a separate audio (no op-amp) amp to boost power to leds? (such as a .5w amp to leds that consume less than .5w?) or should i find an op-amp. Could i just put the filter on and hook leds up in parallel w/out sound loss? I am getting totally lost. I know this is a LOT to ask of you, but your answers to my previous questions have been very helpful and are greatly appreciated. Thanks for putting up with me :) I wish i could figure this out better, but i am having a hard time. So far example no.1 on this link (about halfway down page) seems to look pretty good. Thanks!!!! http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/filter/filter_2.html

Which RF filter do I need for Tesla coil line protection? Answered

How do I determine what voltage and amp rating my RF line filter should be? I'm building a modest Tesla coil, powered by an automobile ignition coil  and must buy an RF line filter for my house mains, but there are so many differently rated filters for sale. How can I get a filter whose color depends on the polarization angle?

Suppose you have a filter through which light linearly polarized at a 60` angle looks red, 120` looks green, and 180` looks blue. A mixture of 60` and 180` looks purple (red+blue). Unpolarized looks white (red+green+blue).Does someone make such a filter? Or one that only polarizes light in a narrow band of wavelengths and transmits other wavelengths unpolarized? Or can you think of a way to capture this information in a photo without specialized equipment or taking multiple pictures?

Reasons why we should do away with internet filters.

Internet filters suck.  Here's why we should throw this sh*t away: - Most filters restrict LEGIT sites, like wikipedia, Youtube, Facebook, etc. - It slows your internet speed down somewhat. - The workarounds make your surfing experience way too slow. - Censorship in general sucks. - It takes away freedom, which is already gradually ebbing away.. - So people don't try and steal my iPhone to look up porn because the PC's are blocked. People should have common sense to just hit the X button if they stumble on content they find offensive.

How can I make a filter in the audiocable between my laptop and car stereo to avoid the noise I now get.? Answered

When I connect my laptop to my car stereo  I get a lot of noise. I suspect there is some kind of loop between the laptop power supply and the amplifier. I think I can solve the problem by using a filter in the audio cable to separate the two, perhaps by means of a transformer. Does anyone have a good circuit design for this?

How may I filter out certain instructables from my account, so they would no longer appear in my searches/browsing? Answered

Howdy! I recall in the early days of Instructables, there was more of a focus on actual working technology ideas. Nowadays, many of my searches become jumbled with Instructables of nature more asthetic than function. It is my desire to be able to filter out these instructables from ever appearing in my searches again, preferably individually for higher precision. Is this possible? Or have I just suggested a new feature to include in an upcoming site upgrade? Thank you kindly, your help is incredibly appreciated. Phunky Monkey, esq.

Polarized Lights and Laptops

I was taking apart a laptop's LCD screen and found that sandwiched between the light source and the liquid crystal display were what appeared to be a vertical and horizontal polarized filter. Why is this? I always got the impression that LCD displays had the polarizers attached to the screen itself. Why would there be an extra set of polartization filters behind the screen? Or... am I just plain wrong in thinking the polarization is on the LCD itself? Could these be the only polarization filters? I have searched all over the internet for the answer to these questions, but I think I am just more confused. If these are extra polarization filters, the only thing I can imagine that they are doing is making the screen darker. Any ideas?
