wind generator ?

Has anyone had experience in using magnets to help propel a horizontal wind mill or vertical wind turbine .what I mean is putting them in a circular series where the north propel against the north creating , forcing or helping the windmill to move in a circular motion?

DIY generator

I'm new to this forum. I just got my welders certificate. I've seen on the web some projects that convert an auto alternator to a 300 amp welder. I live in an apt. and don't have 220V. I have a new mig welder and it works super for thin and medieum guage metal. My buzz box needs alot of power, about 15 KW, and even used generators are out of my range. Can anyone help?

USB generator

I am building a small crank-powered generator for a college electronics class that will power a USB port. I know a USB port supplies 5V DC, and that my generator will obviously produce AC current, but I'm not sure the best way to convert AC to DC, then how to step my voltage up to 5 volts. My generator uses 6 wire coils in a circular pattern. 12 neodymium magnet rotate over the coils. This doesn't seem like the most efficient design ever, but that part is a stock university kit, the wiring is up to me. I've only been able to test each coil at a time, and each one produces .5-.7 VAC. Do any electricians out there have some tips? When all is said and done, I'll definitely be posting an instructable on this.

electricity generators

Alright, so I'm working on a project, which I won't disclose at this time, and I need as many different ways to generate electricity as possible.  Any and all ideas are welcome, nothing is too weird or unconventional.  The on requirements are it needs too be portable and smallish, in theory it should be easily carried on say, a hiking trip or something.  It also needs to be able, even with some circuitry, to charge a battery.  Ideally 2 AA batteries in series, but higher than 3v is OK as well.  So, I will compile all the ideas and, if they will work for my purposes, I will include it in my instructable I'm working on.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and all ideas are welcome.  Fire away!

Solar "Generator"

Since I've always wanted to do something like this and I found this site, it's about to happen! I found a smaller version with what I wanted to do at Popular Science but I want to do something on a larger scale. I do have some questions though that I'm hoping someone can answer or point me in the correct direction.I'm going to describe what I'm doing with what and what I have questions with.I'm going to be buying this solar panel and charge controller kit. Sunforce Solar Panel With Charge ControllerA deep cycle 115 AMP Hour 12 V marine battery from Wal-Mart with Plastic Battery caseSalvaged wood Toy BoxMeter Question: How to meter how many amp hours I have left or how charged the battery is? What kind of meter to buy? Where? (not too expensive <20 bucks or so) how to hook it up.A 12 V accessory outlet with on off switch Question: I'm putting an inline fuse before the switch, 15A the line fuse goes on the + (positive) side correct?A 700 Watt 6.25 AMP DC to AC converter with 4 outlets connected to it. Question: can I put a breaker or fuse between the 4 outlets I'm going to be plugging into on the outside and the plug being plugged into the DC to AC converter? If so how?USB ports for charging with on off switch. Question: how do I convert the 12V to 5V in an easy way? I've seen some creative ideas on here for charging VIA salvaged USB ports but I don't want to have to hook it up to my power inverter if I don't have to. Cooling/ventilation for the entire thing. Any ideas how I might cool/vent it? Currently I'm thinking of using old computer fans and put them on both sides of the toy box and have 2 blowing and 2 blowing out. Having the fans run off of the solar panel during the day and either have a switch to change it to battery at night (if it's too warm in the house) or maybe photo sense it? Temp sensor to turn it on and off? Or a switch to turn it off completely. I'm just looking for idea's to keep the battery (and to expand to be more than one battery) cool/ventilated. If you have examples or detailed description on how to do it that'd be great. I'm not one to steal ideas so I'll credit the idea's I'm given if I use them =)I'm going to see how much I can run off of this and how long. Hopefully save some big time energy also! Thanks all!

Hydrogen Generators

Does anyone know how to test for output quantity of HHO gas from a Hydrogen Generator when connected to a vacuum such as your intake manifold? The output is easy to test when just checking with a submerged bottle with the generator running on its own without being hooked to a vacuum source. The generator will put out substantially more volume under vacuum than when not. How do you check for output volume when under vacuum? Pylgram

Mini-generator? Answered

I was sitting here today wondering how could an electric car with a gas generator possibly be useful, then it hit me.  I could add a gas powered generator to an RC car to give it the ability to fill up and run again without the need to charge a battery.  The idea was brilliant so I went out looking for a platform to use.  I decided on a traxxas E-Maxx.  It has a lot of space to build on, and it is a pretty awesome truck.  I decided I would leave the batteries in the equation and they would be sustained by the generator.  Now, what on EARTH DO I USE FOR A GENERATOR that doesn't cost as much as the motor itself.

EMP generator

Back in the late 50's the Heathkit company had a "build-it-yourself" radio kit based on the early TRF (tuned radio frequency) radio. For you younger guys, these radios were not superhetrodyne like our modern radios where one only has to rotate a single knob to change stations. With the TRF one had to tune each stage of amplification to the frequency of the desired radio station. At any rate, I bought one of these kits when I was in the Air Force and found, quite by accident, that if I tuned to a radio station that one of my buddies was listening to in the barracks, and then detuned slightly, I could jam his radio. Drove him nuts! But the best part came later when, on one weekend I looked out of the barracks window and, lo and behold! there was a guy washing his car while listening to his radio. Ha! So, I got out my trusty TRF, found the frequency the car radio was tuned to - AND JAMMED IT! Today, that guy is still wondering what the hell was wrong with that radio. I never tested at what range I could jam radio channels, but the car was a good 100 feet away. Now, this device will work with AM radios but not with FM, unfortunately (not without a lot of modification of the TRF).

Grid Tied Generator? Answered

So I am planning on hooking up a grid tied inverter and generator, I still need to measure the voltage on the incoming lines, but I assume it is 120 ish so I think that is were I will hook the inverter and then it will go back out through the transformers into the lines, is this right?  Now lets say it is hooked to a wind turbine, will the amperage on the generator vary with the speed while still supplying the right voltage, if not how do I compensate for varying wind speed. We are talking 29 kw generator (it is huge, 16 more than the max on my meter, I will obviously consult the electrical company.

I've been reading up on negative ion generators, and I was going to get one (they're only 12.95), but I was skeptical on safety. 15kv (!) going through my body does NOT sound safe. I don't know about you, but I only have one life, and its goin good right now, so I don't really want to get rid of it.Does anyone have experience ith these? Yes, I know about the one instructable about rigging it with your doorbell,, but even they mentioned -and I quote- "...a pretty nasty shock...", so what exactly am I dealing with? specific...Oh, and I was thinking of the 12vdc one. Generator from scooter motor

This project came about because someone cut the power line going to my house. The power company was slow to fix it, so I cobbled together a way to charge auto batteries for my invertor. The generator is the motor from a discarded electric scooter ( model MY1016 from JX Motor Co., rated 24v input and 2750 rpm). I removed the motor, it’s drive chain, and sprocket wheel and attached it to the frame of a discarded bike. The pictures show the details. By cranking furiously, I can charge a 12v battery with about 3/4 amp of current. There is a small epoxy rectifier to block the battery from driving the motor. This thing was made from parts on hand and cost me only the assembly time. I don’t have any sources or price lists.

How would I build an electric generator with variable torque? It's my understanding that P=T*rpm, but that T is const.

I am interested in retrofitting a spiinner bike to produce electricity. The spinner currently uses brake pads to adjust the resistance. There is plenty of energy being 'lost' in the form of heat due to the brakes. I would like to be able to adjust the resistance of the bike without losing energy in the form of heat. I understand that gears are a possibility, but I would prefer to be able to adjust the resistance in a continuous manner. Any ideas? I've considered a CVT (continuous variable transmission) design, but this would be quite difficult. I've aslo wondered if the relative motion of a disk with permanent magnets to a disk of stationary coils would vary the resistance. I'm not sure what the range of variation would be however. Any suggestions or insights you might be able to offer would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Would a DIY wind generator work as a micro hydro generator?

I own land in the mountains and i have a spring fed stream.  Total drop across my property is about 25 feet.  The creek has at least 30 gpm flowing in it.  I know what 10 gpm looks like and it is way more, maybe as much as 50 gpm.  I will measure it soon.  I have been fascinated by the idea of building my own generator and using the water as a power source. That leads me to my questions: how to make it produce power at lower RPM? How to reduce cogging by design? What size wire for my coils? One strand in the coil or several strands? (i have seen them wound with 4 strands) How many coils and magnets? (size too) I figure 3 phase a/c.  Any reason to do something else? I have seen many great Youtube vidoes on wind turbine generators but that is such a variable power source. Would those generator designs be appropriate for a hydro system?  Hydro is a much more reliable power source, so i want to do this right from the start.  At this point in time its just an idea but I want to run with it.  It will power a small off the grid cabin and work shop.  A solar system will be part of this total system as well but i want to develop this water source first.   Its at about 400 feet from the stream to the cabin location.
