Coil Gun

HiI am planning to build a small (length about 15 cm) portable coil gun. There are some really good intructables out there. (I still don't have enough knowledge of how to build this thing) I found this site to be pretty interesting. How can I make a powerful coil gun like that with capacitors (not that whole blob of camera stuff)? I am hoping that it could be rechargeable, perhaps by a USB connector (5V). But that would not last long right? So I guess by adding some batteries would help. Trying to get this coil gun to the smallest size with a powerful blow. By the way, there is something called EMF that affects the system? Thanks

ion ray gun

Remeber a while ago I said I wanted to make some cool high voltage weapon in the shape of a gun? Well I've dicided to make an ion ray gun! The only problem is that I don't want to pay for plans (that's just not right, half the time they probably jip you). The closest thing I've found is this: that doesn't help me with saftey procosions (sorry, having a bad spelling day).Basically I need help for the schematics and the safe way to build and handle one. I don't want a wimpy one either, I want a medium power one, like do stuff from 10-20 feet or something like that.Oh and if possible, skip extra circuits by using something like this: also don't mind making voltage multiplier circuits. If everything works I'll make an instructable out of it!Oh, and tech-king, you can use the sign now.

DIY Soldering Gun? Answered

My 40W soldering iron is a bit too weak. I've been thinking about making a soldering gun, but it confuses me a bit... Since I don't work with sensitive electronic components, I don't think there's a problem. I also like the fact that I can control the amount of heat easily... I soldering gun is pretty much a "mix" between a soldering iron and a welder, right? Similar to a hot-wire styrofoam cutter. Maybe I should call it an Incandescent soldering lamp...  A hot wire cutter is exactly like a soldering gun, except it uses a thicker, shorter, wire that has low resistance... To make one, what I need is a power supply that can supply: High current, and low voltage (Wikipedia doesn't define low voltage), right? With a 5V 40A ATX power supply, a switch, and a single core wire that has close to 0 resistance, do you think I would be able to make a soldering gun? A 5V ATX power supply is the power supply with the lowest voltage that I own.  I don't know the resistance of the wire that I can use, because I don't know what wire to use, and don't know the current it will take. I know I will need the heating wire of the tip to be a higher gauge, so it will have more resistance on high amps, and it will be the one that will heats up. From what I'm guessing, 5V is too high, and something like 1V would be better. Perhaps I'll find a way for stepping it down to a lower voltage...

Coil Gun Project

Hey guys, I am currently building my first coilgun, first of all, the components: Charging:     Disposable camera circuit x 2     2 x D cell batteries Capacitors:     2 x 1200uF 200V     2 x 680uF 200v     2 x 300uF 200V     1 x unknown (attached to camera circuit with no info) Switch:    250V @ 15A - 6 pole toggle (I will upgrade to some for of solid state when I have the money) Now, because I have two of each capacitor I have put one of each into a parallel bank, giving me 2 cap banks with one of each cap, I then connected the two banks in series, I have not done a lot of maths yet which I think I should but I was hoping that would give me 400v which seems to be average. The problem is, it is only charging to 340v tops, I think that may be due to the camera circuits being wired incorrectly. I have the two batteries in series, both charging both of the circuits, then the circuits both charge the caps, the + and - outputs meeting on the caps, am I doing that wrong? Also, does having 300uF caps in series with 1200uF caps hinder the bigger ones? Would I be better of with just the 1200uF and 680uF, or maybe even just the 2 1200uF in series? should I also leave the small cap on the circuit or take that off? Thanks in advance guys, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am having a lot of fun with this project and while I wouldnt like to be on the other end, it is still not as powerful as I would like, even for it's small size.

Is there a better material (cost and in efficiency) than copper for the rail? coil gun ammo holder

I am currently creating a coil gun within a small nerf pistol. Everything is going well, it all fits within the gun quite nicely actually. But one problem I've realized is that there is nothing keeping the ammo within the barrel (a bic pen tube)  I would like to hear some ideas on how to keep the ammunition (which is currently undecided, if that helps. I'm considering either small steel balls or nails) within the barrel until the coil is activated. It is worth noting that because of the design of this particular gun, the trigger is not a lever, but instead a simple sliding mechanism that hits a button situated right behind it. One option I'm considering is using an electromagnet hooked up to a NC (normally closed) switch also hooked up to the trigger. The magnet would keep the ammunition in place, and pulling the trigger would turn it off. I have already added a sliding switch to turn on and off the gun, and I could wire the second magnet to that switch as well. The complication I foresee arising from that is that the electromagnet may still have residual magnetism for a few milliseconds, which could hold the ammunition in place for longer than it takes the capacitors to discharge. thoughts?

Best voltage for coil gun?

In my coil gun project I have 36 330v 120 uf flash capacitors. When I had them arranged in 4 banks of 9 linked together in series (.5*1200*1200*1000e-6 = 720J) the projectile could easily punch through cardboard. But when I tried to increase the power by making 7 banks of 5 giving me (.5*2100*2100*500e-6 = 1100J) the projectile has trouble getting through cardboard. The coil I am using is 50 feet of 22 gauge wire. Is there any thing that I am missing? Thanks.

Question by eskibro830

Knex Gun Force Standard

The problem is that almost no one has enough room inside to shoot a knex gun unless it's a total peice of get the point. But, by going outside there are many other vaiables that effect how far a gun can shoot (eg. Wind direction/ speed, trees and other obstruction, etc.) Also power as in "can shoot through can" or "through 3 sheets of hard cardboard" can also be misconstrude in the way that range from the can is a main factor, point blank range is not always the most powerful range, often 1-3 inches away has exponentially higher power. What needs to happen is a tool be built (out of K'nex, what else?) that is not only easy to use but impossible to mess up, it should be able to give 100% accurate reading for all types of guns from the weakest to the most powerful. Also in terms of different types of ammo, rod size shouldn't matter( thats what she said) the only thing that should matter in terms of ammo is whether it is deer slug, rod, sligshot/ catapult rod(a rod with something the can grab the elastic), or other and specify what that is.Range is all to often streched beyond reality by saying it can shoot 200 yards, when really it might be able to shoot 50 yards tops when pointed strait but 200 yards if it is pointed strait at the sky. We need to bulid a target that you shoot from maybe 5 feet away and something mesures force, be it cardboard, or cans, or plywood, maybe even something that leaves a dent in it and you can mesure the depth of the dent to tell you how much force (eg. 1/2"=1, 1"=2, 1 1/2"=3, etc.)Also one last idea if you would prefer to stick to range outside, is that you divide the range in feet, by the number of cardboard sheets(or other medium)the gun can shoot trough at point blank range (say it shoots 63 feet, and through 4 sheets of thick, corrugated cardboard the equation would be F= 63/4= 15.75, so your force rating would be 15.75)These are only some ideas to get all of you thinking about a standard in K'nex gun power.-TheXenk

Heat gun mod question

I am not an electrician but I like to tinker. I am just getting started with DIY type electronics kits and I have decent soldering skills. I cant say I am an expert at reading prints, but I can usually build a simple schmatic. I wish to disassemble a heat gun for parts and add in a potentiometer to vary the heat, another potentiometer to control the airflow, and a digital temperature probe with temp display. I am attempting to build a heat generating device with precise control of the temperature and airflow. I dont really want to spend $150 on a fancy LED digital display heat gun with variable heat dial, so this is my next option and potentially a heck of a lot more fun. Initially I just want to get the variable heat and airflow control(potentiometers) hooked up, and if it will be easy enough I can later install the temp display. I could always just use a cheap "laser" temp probe to check the temp and ensure it is fairly stable. The heat gun I am looking at is a piece of junk and it only has 2 temp settings. How easy is it to install a potentiometer for varying the heat and one for the airflow? I assume I can just install the one for heat control inline after the circuit that sets the maximum heat level and dial in the temp I want. As for the airflow control I assume I could do the same thing, but instead put it before the power lead feeding the fan. I am not an electrical engineer so I want to make sure this will work first before I fry my cheapo $20 heat gun. Would it be bettter to just gut the entire thing and work with the naked parts and install my own circuit to control and display the temp or could I keep the basic unit intact and mod from there? Any ideas, or a basic schematic that would satisfy this requirement would be greatly appreciated.

Sentry Gun and PIR sensors

Hello, I have a question about PIR sensors for a robot I'm making. Most have a digital pin that goes high when movement is detected. The time that this pin stays high for (delay time) is often adjustable by a variable resistor on the sensor. My problem is that I need a sensor with no delay time - the digital pin should go low as soon as movement stops. If anyone could point me in the direction of a pir sensor with no delay time/one with a very short delay time (under 0.5s) I would be grateful. Or possibly, If I were to remove the variable resistor, would that remove the delay time? thanks.

electric gun......... Safe? + airsoft

Could you make a coil gun, instead of shooting bolts it shoots a nail. The tip of the nail is dulled. When you fire the nail accelerates to a really fast speed, hit's an airsoft pellet, the pellet goes flying, the nail head gets stuck by a mechanism (barrier). would this be safe, or be a really really bad idea and the pellet won't get that fast. A Hybrid of Coil and Rail gun

So I said i'd throw this up in the comments section on Youtube not too long ago, and I don't like it when something easy and free doesn't happen. This is some ideas and observations that have to do with coil guns (mostly). I'm in the process of finishing up several projects, so my resources are kinda spread out. I should have a prototyped coil gun finished in 2-3 weeks though, so if this doesn't clear things up, hopefully that video will. I should point out, I am a chemist with expertise in biochemistry, not electrical engineering. Basically my idea is to combine a railgun and a coil gun for the expressed purpose of avoiding the pitfalls that a pure coilgun or a pure rail gun have. At present, none of the designs out there would be capable of competing with an actual gun. By mixing the two, i'm hoping to get something that might eventually be capable of doing so. So.. I've included a very poor drawing (I'm not an artist). The barebones circuit is sketched in the lower right hand corner. The gun barrel, which is a piece of aluminum tubing split into two pieces to sever as a rail system, is sketched in the upper left, and again in the middle figure to show how to integrate the coil and rail system. Looking at the circuit design, you can see that this starts off as a very basic capacitor-inductor circuit. The charge is purposefully allowed to trickle through the circuit until the coil reaches saturation and the capacitor(s) are charged. When the trigger is pushed, the inductor side of the circuit has to dump into the rail system to complete the full closed loop. Because of the ferromagnetic material (the brown stuff), the magnetic force persists for a while (that is to say, it has high reluctance). The ferromagnetic material does one other thing that is important here. It forces the middle of the coil to be far off center. The coil is pulling the projectile into the middle of the magnetic field, but that is not necessarily in the center of the winding. Adding ferrite, or other high reluctance material, towards the end of the barrel biases the field towards that end.  At the same time that the coil stops getting current, the rail system become active. This allows a charge to pass through the bullet/projectile, and, even though the majority of the force is going to be caused by the inductive coil, the rail system allows an eddy current to setup in the bullet. This does several things. First the bullet doesn't have to be iron, nickel, or cobalt. With a stray eddy current in the projectile, any conductive material will work. The advantage here is that once the current stops, the non-magnetic material stops being  to the magnetic field, preventing backwards acceleration of the projectile as it exits the barrel.  Second, Rail systems and coil systems are not often used because they are perpendicular to one another, but, this can be used to put spin on the projectile, in a similar manner to rifling in a barrel.  After the projectile is fired, the circuit is open, preventing excessive electrical discharge.  My circuit design is really badly drawn... =T if it needs more explanation please post up questions.

Compact bubble gun mechanism?

My 7yo was begging for a bubble gun, and I promised I'd 3d print him one.  To my surprise, there are very few 3d printable bubble machine designs around, and none that match what he wants.  (He wants it to have a handle and trigger like a handgun.)  So, I suppose I'll be designing one. . . (FYI - My parts bin has plenty of fans and motors and even small liquid pumps and I am competent at 3d design. ) My challenge is that the basic rotating disk method of wetting the bubble hoops is both too bulky for a handgun-style bubble shooter, and is highly spill-able. I see online there are numerous toy bubble guns that look like what I want and appear to be much less spill-able.  However, I can't figure out from the pictures how they work, beyond that there is a pump that sends bubble solution to above the hoop and a funnel to route the excess back into the container.  How does the bubble solution get swiped across the hoop reliably? (And, yes, I know it would be easier and cheaper to just buy one.  That's not the point.)

Automated arduino Water gun

Hi, Im looking for some advice on a current project.. The idea is to build an arduino controlled water turret that sprays water at cats in my back garden. The basis of the idea is a few PIRs to cover 360 degrees, a stepper motor and possibly a windscreen washer kit to spray the water. I want the project to be portable so dont particually want to have a mains water feed. My main issue is the method of spraying the water, Im considering a 12v pump kit but thinking there could be an issue with how far one of these pumps would actually spray the water. I have an ardunio uno and a couple PIRs and dont want to be spending a great amount of money on the project although if i can find a decent method of firing the water then i could increase the budget slightly.  Any ideas or similar projects out there where i might get some inspiration?  Any help would be appriciated
