Wiping a hard drive

I recently got into taking apart old computers that no longer work (and by no longer work I mean really screwed up and not worth keeping) and see what I can salvage.  I found this 80 gigabyte hard drive from a Windows Desktop computer, and i was wondering how i could wipe it without having to put it back in the computer, because it's all in pieces at the moment. If they uploaded correctly, i have pictures of the hard drive and all of it's info. Also, could some tell me the official name of it please? Thanks. :D

Hard drive to usb?

I am a long time follower, and, if I am not mistaken, first time poster.  Please bear with me... I have looked about the site quite a bit, but I have found no solution to my question.  Heck, I don't know if it is even possible!  I have a few hard drives from older computers that have went the way of many older electronics do... :( ...and I want to do something with them, besides leaving them about to collect dust.  Is it at all possible to connect them to a usb port WITHOUT a hard drive enclosure?  I was kinda thinking about connecting a usb cable to the ide port, but will it work, and to which pins do I apply wires/solder? If this is possible and someone knows how to do it, please, PLEASE get back to me!  Thanks so much!

Hard drive motors?

I need to get a harddrive motor up and running, it has four pins for power, does anyone know exactly what these pins or which is which, the motor is from a harddrive from an old xbox, i worked hard get this wretch out all the way down to the motor, honestly microsoft should build bomb shelters, and the casing of the hard drive is pretty tough, on of the boards on it needed some friendly persuasion from a hacksaw and a hammer after I removed the apparent retaining screws, all 7 million of them, by the way I may do an instructable on how to open an old Xbox with nothing more than a swiss army knife, and it doesn't get damaged at all. To figure out the pins is all I need, left to right arrangement would do I have figured out which way up the bottom is but the crazy hieroglyphis in microscopic size reveal little about the connections,

Reformatting a hard drive? Answered

Hi there. I know most of you reading this are thinking of the simple process that is reformatting a hard drive, and are prepared to offer me an obvious and somewhat novice explanation as "right click > format...". Please don't, this is not the case. I recently acquired an external hard drive previously used as a Direct TV Dvr. The hardware and everything is fine, and my computer recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage Device. However, the disk itself is in a format my Windows-based computer cannot recognize, read, or understand, and - as a result - does not acknowledge it exists. I need to figure out how to reformat this to NTFS / FAT32 to use on a windows machine. Also note, as a result of the lack of recognition of the disk, I can only guess its drive letter. CMD does not recognize it at all - I have tried mounting disks E - Z with no result. If needed, I have access to a Macintosh, but that is preferably the last resort as it resides about an hour away from where I am currently.

Externalize a hard drive?

I've found many instructables, but they all require an expensive SATA to USB adapter. Are there any projects that don't require this item? It would also be acceptable to find one that would let me wire multiple drives to the same SATA port.

Distinguish glass hard disk platters from aluminum without marring the reflective surface? Answered

I have hundreds of hard disk platters from disassembled hard drives.  Some are made of glass, some are made of aluminum.  The glass ones, when flexed, shatter into thousands of razor shards which screech across the room. I would like to avoid that in the future.  I only want to use the aluminum ones, but I don't want to mar the reflective surface. I've thought of weighing them, but the platters some from many manufacturers and eras and so the weights won't be consistent.  Magnets don't attract glass or aluminum. Does glass float? (I'm guessing no.)  Is the reflective surface transparent? (I'm guessing no again, but maybe a strong light would work?) There has to be a way....

Question by swagramp   |  last reply

Hard drive price confusion

Looking to create a small form factor PC to fit on the back of a monitor and while searching for a hard drive on Newegg noticed that the lowest price 2.5" internal desktop hard drive was $120 and not even 150GB ( http://tiny.cc/01012 ) while a 2.5" USB powered portable hard drive that is 1TB is $90 ( http://tiny.cc/01024 ), these numbers just are not adding up, couldn't I just disassemble the portable hard drive. Not sure if I am missing something important, Help is greatly appreciated!

Reusing an old hard drive

I was recently disecting an old laptop (HP, roughly 6-8 years old) trying to find a use for the parts, as i have had very many replacements since I had stopped using that one. I removed a 10GB IBM hard drive. From the picture, you can see that it has a total of 44 pins. I am not sure if each pin goes to the same destination as the one opposite to it. i was wondering if there was any way that I could convert this into an external drive that I could attach via USB or something similar. If you have any ideas, let me know. Id love to find a use for this instead of just throwing it away.

Are laptop hard drives interchangeable? Answered

I am looking for a cheap, small size laptop on ebay and I am considering the Thinkpad T60-2007. It does not come with a hard drive but I want to install one from a Windows 7 Dell laptop, and possibly install Linux at a later point. Would this work? I have the driver discs from the Dell. The Dell one is 2.5", SATA HD and I believe the T60 is also.

Dead external hard drive?

I've been searching the internet for answers for the last couple of hours, but no solutions have helped me so far. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that I have to either take it to an expert for data recovery, or if that isn't possible I'll have to accept the fact that the files are gone. So earlier today I was frapsing some PS4 content with the help of a Roxio video capture (PS4 signal blocked so I used Fraps to get around that). I've been saving the files on my C: drive, but since fraps files tend to get quite big, I changed the save destination to my external hard drive (Buffalo). Immediately after I ended the recording, my computer froze and I had to force shutdown. Upon restart, it started to repair damage to the disc (translated from Finnish), and once it was ready, it then proceeded to the system recovery menu. After at least 2 hours of trying all other options, I ended up choosing the option that resets my computer. Well that really wasn't the end of the world, since the most important files are on my Buffalo hard drive, but after the reset was complete, I couldn't access my external hard drive. I tried everything in Disk Management, at least what was suggested in similar issues, but nothing really changed anything. I can see my external hard drive in the Disk Management, but can't access it. When I try to initialize the disk, an error pops up that says: "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)", and it just shows that the disc is not initialized, and that it is unallocated. Is there any other option than either taking it to an expert for data recovery, or is that too late now? Thanks in advance.

replacing a laptop hard drive? Answered

Hello boys and girls, this weekend my trusty laptop had failed on me.  After cursing up a storm and mashing every button possible i finally found the "restore" CDs of my laptop hd partion.  I got it restored to factory fresh and was ready to rock and roll when i get an error yesterday stating that "SMART" has detected iminate drive failure or some crap like that.  After searching i uploaded new firmware for the hd hopeing it would go away.  It didn't.  I ran a self test and it said bad Hard drive. My question is as follows.  How hard is it to replace a laptop hard drive (other than switching out drives), if I burn a copy of the restore CDs will it install windows on the new hard drive or do i have to send it to HP/ buy windows At this point i am not worried about loosing any data (done did that twice already) just want a computer that doesnt pop that error message everytime i reboot. My laptop is a Compaq Presario F700 and i had it for almost 3 yrs to the day

Hard Drive Failure Advice? Answered

Our family PC was on and running today, but when I left for a minute and came back; it was at a pure black screen that simply said "Hard Drive Failure" (similar to below, substituting my message in quotes). When I tried to reboot, it got stuck at the "Dell" startup screen, and wouldn't boot into the HDD from BIOS; although it did recognize it. Powered it off, left it for an hour; and it booted up. However, it did hit a "Windows Error Recovery" screen, and has been for a while now upon a boot up here and there. The computer is three years old. Should I ignore it, or replace it (the HDD) asap? My guts say better safe than sorry, but extra input couldn't hurt anyway.

How To Repartition Hard Drive? Answered

HI! Well, the story is I dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP. The XP partition has 5 GBs free and the Ubuntu partition has around 2 GBs. So I want to transfer about 2 from the XP partition to the Ubuntu partition because Ubuntu is my primary OS. I have looked into this, but the directions have not been too clear. Could anyone help me out here? I would like to use some linux based partition editor to do this, but I really don't know how and don't want to try anything for fear of destroying my data.  P.S. Partition Magic has been discontinued and is no longer available. Thanks!

iPod 2G to iPod 5G Hard Drive Converter

I have two iPod 5Gs (iPod w/ video), and one of them went through my washing machine. I also have an iPod 2G (with the actual spinning wheel), and I want to transplant the larger 30G hard drive into the older iPod. I opened them up, and was disappointed to find out that the connectors were different. Does anyone know if there is any way to connect the larger hard drive to the old iPod?

Earn some Karma - Save my butt!

Okay, I've found users of this site to be some of the most industrious and handy people on the 'nets. So hear my plea: long story short, I dumped a significant amount of black tea (with cream) right into the vent of my Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive (luckily I'd unplugged it about 2 minutes ago). I'd just finished putting EVERYTHING that is mine and digital onto this, and a significant portion of other copies got deleted. Show me please your instructability on how to clean this confounded thing! I'm all ears... PS I'm a new member and if I get help with this I will post (tonight) my first instructable on a GUARANTEED heart-melting confection for Valentine's that's been in my family for years and years (and is delightfully simple to make). Thanks for your time -B **EDIT** Thanks for the responses guys, "wipe it off" is sage advice indeed. I was thinking though of somehting like an alcohol/water solution to rinse the affected area once I get home to my tools and see what went down. Thoughts?
