Yes yes, shhh I want to ask a serious question today. I traded one of my kenwood amps for my parents as their sony surround unit is really shitting out and the sound sounds terrible and the entire control panel on the front is messed up. I just want to know a couple things about the sony to see if I can fix something. The panel, well that's quite interesting to explain and if I posted a video of it you guys would probably think I edited it or something. So imagine this, the bass + and - buttons are beside the treble + and -, two sets of buttons. If you push one of the bass adjustment buttons, it glitches and turns the treble for example, up or down randomly and doesn't do what I wanted it to do. It's like this with all of the buttons and seemed to have happened after we moved here. And I know it didn't get banged around because it was transported in the back seat of a car on blankets to the new house and carefully carried in by me. If I say try to use one of the surround sound adjustment buttons it glitches out and acts like I hit another one that's beside it in any direction. Hard to explain but I'm just damn confused as to why it suddenly happend (dry solder connections?). Damn this post is long and it's only half done...lol. Bad sound, I will not tolerate it under my household, but on the other hand it was a $400 unit back 5 or so years ago and I KNOW it used to sound good, with a such a profound richness of bass that just punched right through you. Now it sounds like shit, the sound is garbled, distorted when turned up, it's not really noticeable until you turn it up fairly loud. I have/had my technics tower speakers hooked up to it and they sounded like shit when I turned them up, yet on my kenwood they sing like the wedding singer days. Any ideas nachomoma? I'll add another note that for most of it's life it's been hooked up to a pair of 250 watt (peak) optimus floor speakers and whenever we played it, it got HORRIBLY hot and warped the top a bit when it was on, enough to push it in and make it spring back up again with quite a force. I liked this receiver a lot and would like to use it again, but I don't know where all these "degradations" came from and despite my useless amount of amp questions/bickering's about I would really appreciate any ideas from you guys. Thanks.. -Punk

I am trying to have a red LED fade off after it is switched on. I know I would need a capacitor, the question is, what value would be needed and would the cap be placed across + and - with the LED (and current limiting resistor) going from + to - as per usual if you see what I mean? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, kind regards

I've always sort of wondered why people who make game systems have to include warnings not to use them in water. Today I got my answer for me. I thought this was pretty funny. My solution: DON'T USE ELECTRONICS NEAR WATER!!!!! You'll probably have to click the 'i' in the corner of the image to be able to see what I have highlighted.

So I am working on a project that involves electromagnets and I am going to control them through a Arduino with a MOSFET. However when I was testing a set-up using an LED I think I fried it. So I am going to link my Circuit layout (excuse the quality, I made it in MSpaint) rather than try to explain it in words. Also I am pretty sure my resistor was too small, but I don't know if that is the killer.

If any of you out there who know lots about how the inside of my computer works could tell me what in the world I just did, that would be wonderful! Here's what I did: I clicked Start, clicked run, and typed 'CMD'. Command prompt opened up and I typed 'At (I put the time it would be 1 minute from when I typed it) /interactive "cmd.exe" After the minute went by a new command prompt opened up. I typed 'exit' in the old one. I did ctrl-alt-delete and ended the process 'explorer.exe'. After I killed that I typed 'cd ..' in the command prompt window, then I typed 'explorer.exe' and it opened back up. On my home computer I was signed in as SYSTEM at this point and on the computers in the computer labs at the community college I was logged in as the same user name as before except with a '$' on the end. At this point I appear to have privileges above an admin profile and I can access and edit all sorts of files and things I know an admin can't normally access. I can also do things to profiles, like give them admin privileges. I haven't figured out how to do this without setting the time I want it to start a minute ahead of the time it was when I typed it.... Is it possible? And I know the 'cd ..' brings me up a directory, why am I able to do this with explorer.exe closed? It appears to be a large security hole... I just want to know how/what just happened! Thanks! -DMC

So im new to the soldering world as well as the small electronics and circuit world. I do know a little about restance capacitance and inductance. But I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for me to get started off with. I have an old TV, Im not sure if I can use my soldering iron to de-solder it, that I can strip down for parts. My new soldering iron is a 20w to 40w, Im not sure what range I need though. If anyone knows any fun easy DIYs that I can do to get started please let me know!! Thanks!

Is it just me, or has their been a spike in the number of spam BS about "age defying creme" and "unique way to get muscles", etc etc, etc. on the question page? At times I would see like 3-7 random posts like that, and have gone through and flagged them all as spam. Sure enough they have disappeared later that day. Currently, there are 5 SPAM POSTS I have found in nearly consecutive order! (I did not link these to avoid getting flaged as spam myself, and I flagged all of them already so they may have rotted already. Who knows.) https://www.instructables.com/answers/httptestoxlreviewnetalpha-limit-/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/Unique-Way-to-Get-Muscles/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/weightloss-pills-only-likely-to-your-physician/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/concentrating-on-treating-them-within-your-skin/ https://www.instructables.com/answers/Important-Skin-Advantages-Of-Aloe-Vera-Gel/ That's just ridiculous! Also, recently, instructables decided to stop sending me email updates on comments on my instructables, and I have checked my settings for emails from instructables, as well as spam. I am not sure if the problem still persists, but I have had to actually load up my previos question on my DSL not working properly to see answers. (I suspected something was up because after a day, no email was received that I got answers. I knew that was not likely. Sure enough when I went to some of my published 'ables, I saw comments that I did not receive as email updates! Wats up with dat?) If anyone else is having similar issues, I will probably find way to file bug report with this info. My guess is that the security for making new accounts is compromised (like captchas not working properly) and that the 'ables robot server is not working properly. No clue. What I do know is that I will be refreshing this page periodically to see new replies to test if emails work or not. I will post in the comments if they do.

Hey! I have an old home alarm system which is broken beyond repair. I just wanted to make sure if it is OK to charge the 12v battery at 2.1 or2.4 Ah with an ATX PSU at 30A? Will the battry just take 2A from it? If not I have the transformer that came with the Alarm, would that be safe to charge with? It's 12v BTW. Thanks. Never can be too careful. Also, I'm using it on a scanner light tube, this will be fine, yes? I have the starter, it is not a problem. It's weird though, when it is lit, you can pull out the ground on the light tube, not the starter and ut still stays lit. Weird. Thanks in advance!

I was bored and I had this laying around from taking apart cheapy solar lamps. I did have them wired previously for 4.5 volts in series but I decided to put them together with some basal wood and wire it in parallel, I plan to get some more cheap solar lights and wire them in three's aswell and then wire the panels together in series to get a higher voltage. I tested the ma shortage current on them and it was only 5ma, is that right? Then again the lamp I was using is kinda crappy, I'll try in the day time outside.

Hi, I am relatively new to building custom computers. However, I feel like I know enough to actually build one. The first problem I'm having though is finding a good motherboard. I won't be doing a whole lot of hard core gaming, but probably a little(Halo, Fallout 3/New Vegas, MW2, etc...). So I would say I'd need the following specs(minimum, more is usually better): 4GB DDR3 RAM PCI Slot(s) 3 SATA devices(2 HDDs, 1 Disk Drive) 500GB HDD(s) AMD AM3 Athlon II x2 445 VGA & DVI I think I've found a good mobo to fit this bill: GIGABYTE GA-785GMT-USB3 Can anyone vouch for it, or offer a better suggestion?

I just got my copy of Make magazine through the door, issue 11.I had a quick flick through, and I saw something remarkably familiar on page 141 - a spherical speaker array based on a pair of red Ikea salad bowls. Just like this Instructable, posted here over four months ago and a finalist in the laser-cutter contest. In fact, it's the same thing. Is there any mention of Instructables? Not a jot. I'm assuming that the author of the article, Michael F. Zbyyszynski, is our own mzed, but wouldn't it have been nice to mention that the make isn't a Make magazine original? That we had it first?I'm not getting at mzed here, I place the blame firmly on the editors of Make. But, without shelling out for eight back copies of Make, how many other articles in Make have been lifted directly from this site, without credit to the site?

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and couldn't quite find the answer to my question. I have a cheapo AM/FM clock radio and thought it would be a fun Sunday afternoon project to turn it into just a radio. I don't need the clock/alarm function anymore (I use my phone) and my dog likes to have some noise around when I'm not home (TV is an option, but I hate leaving the screen on all day). Currently, the radio only turns on when the clock is triggered by the set alarm time...and it only plays for a max of 60 minutes. Should be easy, right? I opened the clock and couldn't quite figure out what I'm looking at...

My latest work involves one of those LED's that change color as they glow. I'm using a battery pack i ripped off of something because it has a switch pre installed. It holds 4 AA batteries. I've tried it with the LED in question before, and it worked just fine. I was testing it again after some assembly and BAM, twas dysfunctional. It glows very feebly. So I switched with my one back up LED. That one won't even light. What did I do wrong? Did I over power it? Where can I go to purchase a new LED of the color-changing type? How do I not kill this one?

I may have only been here for 2 years but this site is changing a bit too much for my tastes. In those 2 years most of the major changes have been pretty recent. Why they haven't implemented legacy views yet baffles me. Or allowing us to customize our own personal layout. By personal layout I mean that each person can customize how the site looks to HIM OR HER. If they implemented that I would be willing to put up with the bugs and glitches it would cause just for the fact that it pleases my eye. What they seem to be doing is copying facebook's style. This absolutely sickens me. I HATE facebook and the only reason I got it was to see just how bad it is. The layout for facebook form over function. It is needlessly over complicated I am a function over form guy. I bet most of the people here are function over form too. Don't be a facebook. If you do I will take my 10$ worth of advertising else where. Maybe if a couple thousand leave you will get it.

Hey all, I'm currently building a turbocharger based jet engine, and i'm nearly done. The one problem stopping it from becoming a finished machine is how to get a good reliable spark. Is it possible to use a glow plug in the combustion chamber and a glow starter insted of a spark plug? All my attempts to use a spark plug have failed so far, and I would love to be able to avoid the issue of 555 timers and electronics needed for reliable sparks, since I haven't a clue how they work.

The Electronic Goldmine has a rare to find component. "Tiny audio optocoupler is about the size of a pencil eraser and has 4 leads. These are used extensively in audio compressors, audio level controls, audio limiters, expanders/noise gates, guitar tremolo effects, guitar amplifiers and music effect boxes. Inside the black epoxy case is a 2 lead photocell (not a photodiode or photo-transistor) and a 2 lead LED. This is why the device finds extensive use in audio applications (photocell instead of photodiode). The LED requires about 10-16mA current and the resistance of the photocell varies from 150K up to megohms when the LED is off to under 400ohms when the LED is on." A

I've got a fairly new DeWalt 20V Lipo Battery pack that got a bit of water inside it's case, causing 1 of the 10 cells inside to go bad. Pertinent info: * Battery pack is configured as 5x2 (5 series stages of two parallel pairs each) * Other cells are in near-new condition. * OEM Factory battery exact matches are rare and quite overpriced. (1500mah x 15A discharge rate @ $10-20 shipped.) * Due to improvement in battery tech, I can get batteries that outperform OEM in every spec for 30-40% of what the OEM costs (2500mah x 20A discharge rate @ $4-6 shipped.) * The battery pack is always charged on a cell-balancing charger. Assumptions: (Correct me if I'm wrong here, especially on the 2nd one) * The partner cell to the dead one is now suspect, due to being undercharged (down to <.1V) by it's dead partner. * I should be able to just replace the bad cell and it's partner with the higher spec'd batteries and it shouldn't be a problem Is this workable, or will having non-identical cells for 2 of the 10 cells cause problems? (I'm totally fine with the pack only being as strong as the weakest link, and only getting OEM performance out of the replaced cells.) I'd rather not have to replace all 10 cells, but I'd rather do that than replace 2, and -then- have to replace all 10 because the combination didn't work.

I guess she got it when she was a kid but never even had intrest enough to open it up and receved new cartridges every so often... she gave it to me!!!. I can't wait to crack this thing open and start gaming it up...lol. on the other hand... I'm unable to decide if I should even open it... I mean how often do you see an Atari still in its packaging

I'm not sure what to do with it... Should I try to restore it, clean it up a bit, find some film on eBay, and use it?Or should I polish it up a bit and see how much I can sell it for?I like film cameras and all, but this one's a bit bulky... And I already have a really good Canon SLR that takes 35mm film, so I don't need another film camera, and I got a nice Polaroid too (what you think of first when someone says "Polaroid", not a camera made by Polaroid that isn't a Polaroid but is a Polaroid because it's made by them). So, here's some pics, taken with my Kodak. What do you think?BTW, Let me know if you want me to post more... I've opened it up already, I can do it again.
