Laptop Power

Hi all. I have a really old dell laptop(given to me) that is missing a power supply. It requires 20v and 3.5 amps to run. I want to make a digital picture frame out of it. I wont be using the battery or cd player and maybe not even the hard drive(not yet decided). Any idea's on what to use as a power source? I don't need to charge a battery just need power. Could I use an old pcu? I know that I could combine the two 12v lines to get 24 ish volts but won't that fry the old thing? I don't want to buy a replacement power adapter cause it is so old and may not work anyway(plus I wont lie I'm cheap lol). Any suggestions?

Laptop Keyboard

After a spill necessitated replacing the keyboard on my Satellite A135, about 1/2 of the keys, mainly on the left side of the keyboard, don't work. I can't seem to press the plastic ribbon cable of the new one into the connector far enough for it to engage all the pins. I tried reattaching the old keyboard, but can't press that cable in far enough either. There seems to be white mineralization on some pins in the connector. It's a very thin space, and barely accessible. How can I safely clean it off so the cable fits properly and makes contact with all the pins?

Laptop Surgery!!!

I want to write my first instructable but I need to do a little research first.  Here is my problem: The sound on my laptop has gone (HP DV2845se).   The audio card is on-board, so my only solution is a USB card and speakers.   This is a huge hassle, and really defeats the purpose of having a portable computer.  In a perfect world I could hide the USB inside the computer and solder the existing mic and speakers onto the card.  Here are the hurdles that I think I would have to jump to achieve this.  1) Find a way to attach the card to the USB port internally (no clue here) 2) hide the card with in the laptop (should be able to find some space, doesn't really need air circulation) 3) de-solder the current jacks on the USB card and solder the speaker wires and mic I'm sure there is going to be plenty more.  For instance I don't know how the speakers are powered.  The USB card only provides the sound part, not any power or amplification.  I don't know if the speakers in the computer will need that.  Any help here is appreciated!  Thanks

Laptop Suggestions?

Recently I graduated high school, and I am now about to be a Freshman in college.  I was wondering if the Instructables Community could be nice enough to suggest a good computer to an incoming Freshman. I will be majoring in Broadcast Telecommunications and Mass Media, with a minor in Computer Science so I am going to need something that can handle video editing and storage pretty well.  Also, I am an avid PC gamer, so something that can handle games like Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands (just to name a few) would be great.   This is what I've been looking at and unless I can get any better suggestions, this is what I will probably get http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T420-4178-Core-i5-2520M-2.5-GHz-14in-TFT/2328427.asp    Thanks for helping me out Instructables!

Dead laptop

My acer aspire 6920 laptop doesn't boot. I have tried the POWER RESET (as an option specified on the acer website), by removing the battery, unplugging, and holding the power button for 20-30 seconds. This had no effect. How it happened:I was playing a game called Warzone2100 on Ubuntu, and it FROZE, so i did a hard shutdown and then.....When I press the power button the following happens:>The Cinedash, and power button light come on . The Hard drive and Cd-rom, fan, and HDD start-up as well.>The hard drive light above the caps lock and num lock indicators flashes seven times consistently, with about a 3/4 of a second between each flash.>The system shuts off completely>(without anyone pressing the power button)The system turns back on and nothing happened.>The system requires a hard shut down.During this entire period NOTHING shows up on the screen, and the back light stays off.I think my BIOS is a PHOENIX and according to some research 7 BIOS beeps means its a bad processor. So I think my flashing light could be a Bios indicator. If my conclusion is true, do laptop processors cost ? and where would I be able to get one ?Are they easy to install ? are they interchangeable with desktop processors ?BTW My processor is an Intel Centrino T5750 Dual Core 2.0ghz.Thanks to anyone who helps me out !

laptop queries?

I have had my gateway t-16 for about a month now, so no ive decided its time to start considering modifying it. i just recently got a new battery for it, only $47 off ebay. but ive got some issues with this laptop. well, not really issues but things i have a problem with. first off, the laptop has a phone line modem, im never going to need it, so im wondering, if i remove the modem card from inside the laptop will it continue to run properly? second, there is the Realtek wireless card, for barely average wireless connection distances, the card gets extremely hot, i dont have a thermometer, but i can easily say its hotter than 50 degrees, my cpu is at 41 degrees right now and the card is a lot hotter than it is (to the touch) third is the cpu itself, it can be a low enough temperature to turn off the fan, but thats quite rare, the fan is almost always running. ive been thinking about taking advantage off all the space in the cpu area and make a heatsink assembly that goes on top of the heatpipe, right above the cpu. the cpu is only at 40 degrees right now because im not doing anything, sometimes even low requirement games will shoot up the temperature to 70+ degrees, in just a few cases (less than 3) the laptop has shut itself off because the cpu reached its thermal limit, 95 degrees. i cant even watch the ben heck show without worrying about the temperature, and no form of cooling pad helps, cpu cover on or off. the cpu cover is also a problem, there is no direct intake for the cpu fan, the cover has no vent right there, just a spot where the plastic is a bit higher, otherwise the air for the cpu is drawn from the motherboard side, where the air is already warm from the chipset, im currently running the laptop with the cpu cover off. the ram gets warm, but its not out of any ordinary operating temperatures. last and certainly not least, is the apparent lack of bluetooth in my laptop, the case is even designed with a space for a bluetooth module, and there is a connector on the motherboard for a bluetooth module, and if i had one, i would put it in. what really bothered me is the fact that the gateway service staff had insisted that i was seeing things when i saw the bluetooth coneection, and that there was no way in the world that my laptop could have internal bluetooth. this ticked me off, because they designed the laptop and they dont even know whats inside it. i could definitely work around the heat problems if there were some really small blower fans, but im not sure if such a thing exists. also, why would my wireless internet turn off (and not turn on) when i plug in a usb flash drive?

Laptop Cooling Question

I'm using a laptop-sized, vented, inverted vegetable tray to keep the laptop cool. It's quite effective even without any fans in this scorching heat. I added a CPU fan underneath ( 12 V, 0.42 A), and ran it off a USB cable from the laptop. The air is quite nice, but one thing I'm a bit worried is, when I touch the top of the laptop, it slightly vibrates constantly due to the fan underneath. Is that dangerous for the laptop? I'm planning to add another fan beneath the hard disk. The one I have now, is under the laptop's CPU fan. Another thing I would like to know is that, is it okay to run two fans of 042 A each, from two USB ports? Each USB port can supply 0.5 A max current. Running one fan off each port should be okay? But, today, the temperature was quite high in the afternoon, nearly 50 degrees! I'm thinking of buyin a readymade laptop cooler. One of these three cheap ones at ebay India: http://cgi.ebay.in/Folding-Chill-Pad-Stand-Laptop-Cooler-Cooling-2-Fan-/250631119144?cmd=ViewItem&pt;=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash;=item3a5ac76128 http://cgi.ebay.in/Chill-Pad-Stand-Laptop-Cooler-3-Fans-USB-Fan-LED-Light-/250629679857?cmd=ViewItem&pt;=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash;=item3a5ab16af1#shId http://cgi.ebay.in/New-Super-Mini-2-Fan-Foldable-Laptop-Cooling-Cooler-Pad-/280504780978?cmd=ViewItem&pt;=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash;=item414f6348b2 Please advise / comment. Hack a laptop battery?

I have like 4 broken laptops laying around and i have been trying to decide what to do with them.  I had this thought and looked up some information about it.  In the battery is basically like 8 AA rechargeable batteries.  Well these broken laptops in question no longer charge their batteries.  I know i can crack open these batteries to get the AAs out.  But is there anyway to charge them once they are out?  I would be comfortable soldering if I have to.  I am very new to these instructables, but I know my way around electronics to fix them.  But this idea has me stumped.  But this could also give me a crap load of rechargeable batteries for my sons toys.  Thank you in advance for any information you could give me.

Laptop Battery Status? Answered

I have a Dell Latitude E6400 that may or may not have a good battery (I bought it used on eBay). I noticed that the battery status light blinks orange about 4 times, then blue and repeats. It does this when I have it plugged into AC. The manual says that if it is alternating orange/blue, it detects a non-Dell AC adapter. Alternating orange and steady blue means temporary battery failure. I'm not sure what the second option would look like. I have a non-Dell AC adapter.

Laptop Fan Buzzing? Answered

Hello Everyone, Need some advice here. I have noticed a slight buzzing sound in my fancy gaming laptop's fan recently. Its only audible when the fan is on its highest speed and then you wouldn't notice it if your volume is up. I'm fairly certain the problem is that the fan is slightly off balance. Here's why: 1). I completely dismantled the laptop and cleaned it of all dust and particles, so its not clogged or impeded in any way. 2). The sound stops if you tilt the laptop approx 30 degrees in any direction. (The sound actually gets louder until the 30 degrees is reached, then it completely stops). My question is: What should I do about it? Is it really much of a problem? Do I need to replace it? If I do, my warranty literally expired 1 week 1/2 ago, is there anything I can do about that? I feel cheated by the timing personally.
