Quadcopter wont lift off? Answered

I have made a quadcopter. However, it wont lift off :( I really need help with that. Following is the list of components I have used: 1) http://www.buildyourowndrone.co.uk/QuadCopter-Full-Motor-ESC-Set-850Kv-p/acq-fmk85.htm 2) 6200mAh, 35C LIPO battery 3) http://www.buildyourowndrone.co.uk/ArduCopter-QuadCopter-v1-0-Frame-Carbon-Fiber-p/ac-frcarbon.htm The weight of the whole copter along with the battery and the components is 1.52Kg which I am sure the motors can lift. I am using and arduino UNO and an MPU 6050 along with a FLYSKY 6Channel Rx/Tx for communication. The motors run on full power, however I am not sure why I can not generate a lift :/ I really need to make it work as this is my final year project. PLeaseeee someone help me :(

Heavy aerial lift quadcopter?

Hi, I am in a local competition where they are asking for a quadcopter that can lift a box of lead. The box weigh's 25kg. Yes, you read that right 25 kg. The rules state that it must be a quadcopter and it must fit in a meter by meter by meter cube. This limits the prop size to 500mm diameter unless the height of the blades is different so they overlap. I would prefer not to do this. each rotor must lift 7000 grams (payload + weight of quad). I have been using this thrust calculator : http://personal.osi.hu/fuzesisz/strc_eng/ and according to it a 500mm (20") at 4.5" pitch (I just put that as standard) will need to spin at 6000 RPM to produce 7.12 kg of thrust. It also says it will need an 800 Watt motor. I plan on using these motors http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__24433__NTM_Rotor_Drive_450_Series_1700KV_930W.html. They are 930 watts and 1700kv. they run on a 6s lipo. A 6s lipo is 22.2 volts. 22.2 X 1700 = 37,740. 37,740 RPM is the theoretical speed of the motor. I only need 6000 RPM. 37,740 / 6000 = about 6. so the motor has an 8 tooth gear on it and the prop has a 42 tooth gear on it. This makes a roughly 6:1 ratio to slow down and power up the rotor. The motor is 30A constant current, 42A burst. What is the difference between a hovercraft lift fan and a hovercraft propulsion fan? Answered

 I'm researching to build a hovercraft, and I am not sure what the difference is between a propulsion fan and lift fan.  I can find a hovercraft propulsion fan that requires 19 hp, but an engine like that is too expensive. The hovercraft lift fan only requires 11.9 hp, and I can afford an engine like that. So I was wondering if I could just use the lift fan as a propulsion fan, if I ever decide to build a hovercraft. I understand the difference in the fans' functions, but what is the difference in the fan itself? is it a different size, pitch or shape? ...All I really want to know is if I could replace the 'propulsion fan' with the 'lift fan'

Need hobby motor help

I'm a bit clueless about the technical side of motors. I mean I know how they work and I know torque and speed and whatnot, but I'm looking for certain motors with a certain amount of torque. I'm looking for a motor than can lift approx. 20 pounds plus itself and 3 other motors that have equivalent amounts of torque. I have no clue what the Stall-torque rating is or how it's measured, so a crash course in that couldn't hurt, either. Help?

Simple 3 Floor Elevator Model

How much lift is created by a half-sized rotor?

If there is a rotor of 26ft rotating at 600 rpm and lifting 635kg of weight at 1200ft/min 14000ft so if there is rotor of 13ft HalfSized 26/2 =13 and same rpm 600 & same power so will it lift half of the weight like 635/2=318kg at 1200ft/min 14000ft ? if not then how much half sized rotor will lift at same rpm and power if 26ft rotor is lifting 635kg at 600rpm at 1200ft/min upto 14000ft then how much 13ft rotor will lift at same rpm and power at 1200ft/min upto 14000ft ? you have an unlimited power source. now is it possible to create enough force at the right "degree" that would be repelled by the earth instead of attracted.. so like a floating magnet. but its strong enough to lift large objects..... like maybe a human?

Simple nail and wire Electromagnet problem ! Answered

So I built a simple electromagnet out of a nail and wire, I hooked it up top power and a switch. What I need to do is to lift a small metal ball the size of a common marble with my electromagnet, when I press the switch ( momentary, when you press it, it shut off power and when you release it power get back) the ball should fall of it, but problem is, the ball stay magnetized to the nail !! The only solution I found up to now is to make the electromagnet just enough powerfull to hardly lift the ball, but I hate it because its a pain to get the ball to stick on and it often fall off randomly. Is there a way the ball could fall off every time I press the switch without reducing the strength of my electromagnet? Thank you !!

What do i consider while making a flying machine? Answered

For a while i've been studying, designing, and building hang gliders. To my great disapointment however, none of them have even glided. I am starting to think there are more things to consider than just center of gravity, balance, and the over all "lightness" of the craft. Are there more things i should consider? I have also pondered upon the idea to make a Ultralight Helicopter, or somthing along those lines. What are some things i need to consider beond what i've already mentioned?

Help me guys! I need to measure a motors lift weight(for a flying machine)!

So, I'm making a hover bike. Yea, dont judge me. And i have to measure the motor(s) needed to lift my bike. I have measured that my bike will weight about 75kg with me without the motors. So i need motor that can lift 75kg+(motors weight) at a power consumption of (something). Help please? :D

Is there a way to calculate how much weight a servo can lift? Answered

I'm working on a 6 legged, 3DOF, spider-like robot, and I was wondering if its possible to find out how much weight the servos I have can lift... It says they are rated 3.9kg - cm so for 1 cm pole, its 3.9kg, and how can I convert that to see how much weight it can hold? the servo's that move the legs I'm not worried about but the ones that lift the chassis, make me have second thoughts.. The chassis is less than 1 pound, so at the point of the servo is about an inch and a half away, will it be able to lift.. Also, 6 servos will be lifting, so does this add all the torque together for a total product?

How to build a wireless switch to control a projector lift and electric projector screen!?

This is for a home theatre  setup. The projector is installed on a motorized lift that hangs in the ceiling. The screen is motorized. They are both 110v AC motors, and they both have seperate up / down leads to control the respective operation. The screen motor is 110v 0.7 amp and the projector lift is 110v 0.8 amp. The screen takes approx. 20 seconds to lower and has no apparent calibration to stop at any particular point (I would like the controller to be able to have this capability). The lift motor has a 'up' stop and a 'down' stop adjustment that cuts power on its own when it reachs these points so the controller just has to provide power for the length of time it takes the motor to get there which is about 12 seconds. Both devices have optional add-on hardware to make them infrared controllable but it costs approx $400 each to go that route. My hope is that I can control them with my universal remote along with having a manually controlled switch in case of remote failure. I want to build this as my first project for contribution to Instructables and the Home Theatre community. Is this do-able for less than $50? Please help. Thank you all for your help in advance.

What should I use for a hovercraft fan?

I have all the necessary building materials (wood, plastic tarp, foam, etc...) as well as a 22 hp engine and a weed whacker engine (both gasoline). I'm having trouble figuring out what i need in terms of a lifting fan. I've determined that i need something that can provide at least 4000cfm. I've looked at industrial shop fans 20+ inches in diameter which seem to provide enough airflow to work, but I've never seen them used in my research. Can anyone help?

Simple Quadcopter using Arduino Uno?

Hello guys I am making a quadcopter using Arduino uno. My first simple aim is to lift and hover the quadcopter.  To achieve this aim  I have connected the signal Wire of all the ESC's to arduino Pin 9 and giving throttle via node server using bluetooth module and johnny five library.  My quadcopter lifts from 2 sides (flips) and sometimes little bit from 3rd side also.  Can anyone suggest me anything ? The thing which I am doing giving equal throttle to all motor, Is it right ? or  should I give more throttle to clockwise and little less throttle to counter clock wise motors. I will be very thankful, if you guys help me to lift my quadcopter

Coanda effect VTOL or "hovercraft" - making a working model

I am currently working on the design of an impeller driven lifting device utilising the Coanda effect. My 3D printer is of course a great help here but only useful to test the vacuum cleaner assembly that I salvaged for the motor and impeller part. So far it is just I am interesting to see myself instead of reading it on the net but I was wondering if any RC model makers out here would be interested too? I have no clue about the available brushless motors and controllers or how much extra weight for electronics, batteries and so on but could provide the 3D files and design tips if anyone would dare to create a working RC model. Unlike all the designs on Youtube no propeller is used for the lift! Those designs might still use the Coanda effect, or better adjust it's airflow, for the steering but the actual lift comes from a prop. An impeller as used in vacuum cleaner does not provide lift and is more the "real deal". The last real world project that I know of was the Avrocar that was tested during the cold war but never made it into production. Just though it might be an interesting project to build your own "flying saucer" :)

How do i set up & program a servo? and what do i need?

I want to know if it is possible for one or two ducted fans to lift a person off of the ground? Answered

I know it's a crazy and outlandish thought, but I've always wondered if it's possible. I know the Mythbusters tried it with the plans from Futurehorizons.net and failed but Is there a way to fix the problems and make the 'fan-pack' work? Maybe not even in a 'fan-pack' but maybe more of a VTOL type vehicle, but not so complex as the Moller SkyCar. Like the Mythbusters explored, I would want something that the 'average Joe' could create. If anybody has any ideas or even guidance on how to do it, such as hp of an engine, rpm's what to make the ducts and propellors from etc, then I would really love to know what everybody thinks. in a counter balanced system, do I need to account for both the load mass and the counter balance mass for acceleration?

I have a simple 2 pulley system lifting a 2400lb mass.  Imagine a chain lift, starting at the load mass, up over a sprocket, across to a second sprocket, then down to a 3000lb counter balance mass.  to move the load down, I'll need to apply 600+ lbf down on the load.  To move the load up, I'll apply <600lbf to the load.  That's simple.  Now, during the move I need to STOP quickly.  Do I need to account for only the 600lbs difference or the 5400lbs of moving mass?   _________________   |O                                O|   |                                      |   |                                      | 3000lb                         2400lb counter                        Load

I would like to build a Jet Pack to lift a man off the ground to fly . I will be using blow guns with an inlet pressure of 1800 PSI and a Flow SCFM 3624 . Airfoil vs. Flat Wings?

I built a model airplane which is rubber band powered. At first I built the wing of the shape of an airfoil and I can assure you that the shape was perfect. When I tested the plane, it just kept on going and going straight with very high speed but never took off. I guessed that the weight was more. So, after removing the weight it still didn't take off. I then used just a flat piece of cardboard for the wing with a slight tilt, so that it would deflect the air downward and produce the upward thrust. I then tested the plane, and even though the wing was heavier than the airfoil one and the plane moved on the ground slower than before maybe due to increased drag and weight.....the plane took off just beautifully just after a few seconds of launch!!! I don't know what was the reason, the airfoil shape was perfect, the surface area of the both wings was same. I guess that flat wings produce more lift.....I doubt that the airfoil produced any lift at all, or maybe they require significantly higher airflow over them than flat tilted wings to produce a fair amount of lift...can you tell me what could be the reason?

I am building a TV lift with (hopefully?!) RF and dpdt switch in parallel. But my wiring is not working as expected...?

I have the hard wired dpdt switch wired as attached and the relay as per the other attachment (but the incoming voltage to power the board and running through the relays to power the actuator are both 12v and from the same source). I am trying to have both a RF control and hard wired back up in the event of battery failure of controller or unit loss. Both items work fine when wired up to the actuator alone but when put in parallel there is a real issue with nothing happening. It seems like there is a open circuit which is drawing a large current from the transformer but not doing anything with it. I think it may have destroyed the relays on the board though - no, no fuse in the system less that on the transformer :-(  I just cannot see the problem but I have found another wiring diagram (also attached but with an actual board shown on it) where there seems to be a whole lot less wiring but  I dont know if this will achieve what I need to do. I do not want to destroy another relay board by experimenting so would be eternally grateful for a little advice. Can anyone assist, I am not an electronics expert but a mechanical engineer (could never get my mind around what I could not see!!)?

Help with a momentary contact switch

Hi everyone. I'm currently working on a new Instructable, and I've hit a small wall. What I'm looking for is a momentary contact switch that closes for a second, then opens again on its own independently of the actuator -- and I can't quite figure out how to do it. To clarify, here's the operation: You lift the receiver (or handset, or whatever you like to call it) on an old telephone, and the buttons -- normally held down by the receiver -- lift up to create the contact so the telephone knows you've answered and the call connects. Well, this phone isn't going to be connected to the telephone network any more, but what I want is for a contact to be closed momentarily when you lift the receiver, and then opens again automatically on its own even if you haven't put the receiver back down. I also want the same contact to be made when you eventually do put the receiver back down -- so you replace the receiver, a contact is made momentarily, and then opens again on its own, even though the receiver buttons remain down. I hope that makes sense, and that someone has a bit of advice on how to achieve this. Thanks in advance! I am currently building an RC hovercraft, I plan to use a single 12 volt 2.1 amp hr lead acid battery to feed both the lift fan for the skirt and the power motor for the drive. However the fan for the skirt is 12v 0.3 amps. How can I reduce the feed to the required amperage with out affecting the other feed from the same battery that will power the drive

Cordless electric drill motor.? Answered

I have been experimenting with an old motor from a cordless drill no markings on it - Any one have any power information for these motors - they seem to produce a LOT of torque for such a small motor.? I find I can lift 4 Kg fairly easily - I guess I could do it the old way and measure and calculate HP.
