Storing Lightning Energy? Answered

Hey Guys, I have wondered on this from a long time. Can lightning energy be stored? Lightning occurs when water droplets rub together right? Which means this is static electricity. As lightning strike the highest point why dont they make a huge conductive bar? And as i know from the various lyden jar projects storing static isnt that difficult. So why dont they do it? I asked my dad  that how much is it per lightning strike he said millions of kilovolts if that is true then why dont they store it? My dad said that its because they cant store that much electricity. Is that the only reason? BTW I'm 12 so please ignore my dumb electric knowledge :).

 (stats from wikipedia...) At 54,000 °F, up to 120 kiloamps and 350 coulombs, one trillion watts of power, 3megavolts per meter, not to mention huge shockwave, how do some people manage to survive this?

How can I create a system where the LED flickers when the person touches it (Kinda like lightning effect)

I'm doing a project where I'm trying to mimic raining effects and I'm wondering how can I create a lightning effect by touch sensor. I need it to be small and light cause I'm trying to make it portable. I'm kinda new to electronics and so far have only built a basic LED circuit. Any help please?

Best protection for computer... LIGHTNING

I've heard of computers fried in electrical storms, even with a surge protector. 1) Is there a better way to protect it, short of unplugging? a friend mentioned connecting it thru a bus, and letting the bus act as a fuse. I'm not sure what he was really getting at. 2) What are the odds? 3) experiences + anecdotes?

is it possible to make lightning gloves?

A friend of mine is offering me big bucks if i build him  a pair of lightning gloves which would shoot large sparks or lightning from one glove to the other. now because ive never built a voltage multiplier befor ei would like to know if theres any problems with my idea which is i get a  small 12v battery pack for racing car i connect that bttery (with a resistor ) to a transformer i then make a voltage multiplier with hv capasitors and diodes to multiply the voltage until a certain voltage is obtained. however i do not know how hoigh the voltage should be so that it is not lethal, but can jump at least one meter from one glove to the other. also as a safety precaution a large copper wire suit should be worn which me and my friend used on my uncles high voltage vandegraf generator whish shot 20m lighnting at us in our loighting suits ontop of our diving suits , and we never felt a thing. anyways, can you please tell e the specs of everything i will need to acomplish my mission?

How to positively charge something? Answered

I was sitting here in the middle of a thunder storm and I had a thought, usually the clouds are negatively charged during a lightning strike, so, if you used a large cannon to blast a positive iron ball into the air, you may be able to get lightning to strike it, then collect it to see what the lightning did. So, you would you charge a cannon ball?

Lightning effects for a small venue stage?

I'm looking for DIY ideas for creating some lightning on stage at a small venue.  The venue is called "The Laboratory" so you can see where the inspiration for the idea comes from.  It needs to be impressive and easily visible but self-contained and safe enough to be operated by a run of the mill stage hand.  Any suggestions are welcomed, but i was thinking along the lines of a large van de graff in a spark cage of some sort or something along those lines.  I also have to take things like size, cost, maintenance, and complexity into account. I am not an amateur but I have never attempted any true high voltage projects.  Any questions or suggestions are welcome.  Thanks for the help!

Does anyone know how to calculate the distance where a lightning has struck? Answered

I remember when I was a child we learned how to calculate the distance where a lightning has struck by counting the seconds between the time we saw the flash until we heard the thunder. I forgot the number that we multiplied the time by ( I think is the speed of sound). I thought about this after we had a nasty thunderstorm. Does anyone know?

Grounding an Antenna

I'm thinkin of puttin up a high antenna. Due to my location with a mountain between me and broadcast towers, reception can be sketchy.  One concern is that of lightning strikes.  But if the antenna is grounded, wont that also ground out the microvoltage radio signals? How do I get microvolt signal without risk of megavolts burning the house down? I've done a wee little bit of google research, but haven't seen this question addressed.

Hello, this is a theoretical question, as i have neither the time nor the money to do it. Assuming that your electromagnet would not melt with the power of the lightning and is made of suitable electromagnet material (copper wire and soft iron?). What would happen if somebody connected a large electromagnet to a lightning rod and to the ground? I do not know much about this field of physics, so please explain your answers! thanks in advance, jonathan

Ionized air principles? Answered

I've looked throughout the internet, but I still haven't been able to figure out this one When air conducts electricity, say when lightning strikes, the electrical field breaks down air molecules... So, it breaks the intramolecular bonds between gas atoms in nitrogen molecules, oxygen molecules, etc. The atoms are then ionised. But then somewhere, I got the information that ionised air contains BOTH positive AND negative ions. How is this possible if the gases are non-metal elements and only form negative ions?? When an electrical current does flow, what carries the charge? The negative air ions? or electrons?  I've found sites that say one, and sites that say another. Thanks in advance

Electronic repair after a voltage spike or power surge

So far I was lucky and never got a lightning strike or other power failure to induce high voltages into my house and equippment. But over the time I got several requests from friends to take a look at things after literally all connected electronics in their house got fried. In some cases there is only a total write off as due to a lack of surge protectors inside all unwanted juice made it's way into vital components. Like a brand new Samsung TV where the replacement of the power board was the only option - which makes you wonder... But in other cases, like microwaves, induction cooktops, computers and such I had some good success with the repairs. Guess it comes down to purs luck on both sides, power surge was not too bad and simple components on the input side failed quickly enough to prevent damage to microprocessors or other sensitive parts. Right now I have an induction cooktop here again that failed after a mains transformer in street blew up during a thunderstorm. I can tell it was bad as everything in the area of fried parts has a vaporizsed metal film on the surface and not much is left that was a surge protection. I cleaned all up, replaced the varistors and missing parts of the traces on the circuit board but the cooktop is not performing the way it should anymore :( At some stage during cooking it turns off with a meaningless error code stating the input voltage was out of bounds. So my next attempt was to literally remove every single component from the filter and power supply board to measure for any possible connections between the traces. By doing so I noticed several points where I had a quite high but measurable resistance in areas where there should be none. Mostly on the direct input side where the varistors tried to save things. So I used my Dremel in a tin drill press to cut the circuit board aourd the affect areas (where possible with a drill, otherwise with a thin grinding disk).. Sure enough I was greeted by charcoal colored dust in several areas. After removing all material until the dust was "clean"  tried again and this time all seems to work fine. I would like to use this topic to offer some help and guidance in case you have devices that suffered a severe power surge of some sort. Many of us either have no insurance to replace those items or even if you do the device might be expensive enough to try a repair despite getting it replaced. Trust me, even it went up in smoke there is still a chance to fix it in some cases and if proper protective circuits were in place the repair could as cheap as a few Dollars for replacement parts. To get useful advice the following things should be included in your request: Some clear pictures showing a close up of the affected parts - if there is visibale damage to be seen. A brief description of what happened, e.g.: lightning strike directly into the house or outside power lines, generator or inverter failure or simply that the power company stuffed up and your entire street was affected. Of course you will need the means to take the device apart for investigation and also some basic soldering skills or somehow how has and can assist you. But if you are up to the challange I am willing to help if possible.

What can I do to prevent lightning damage with this device?

             I'm planning on building the device specified here:  http://www.eham.net/articles/9272 I want to place it about thirty-forty feet above the ground, between two large trees.  This would be above the power lines in my area, and also above most everything else besides the trees themselves.  This seems to pose a significant risk of having lightning strike it.  I don't want to have to put it up and take it down every time there is a storm (nor am I always here when there is one).  Is there any way to make this safe from a lightning strike?  P.S.  I know this works--one of my friends works for Honeywell and, when asked whether or not this was true, he explained that they have had conferences, lectures, etc. about the problem of static buildup on power lines.  My line length would be around 200-300 feet long, which is certainly not anywhere near the miles that many HV hydroelectric lines in my area run for, but it is still quite long.

Can I substitute a vertical antenna for a dipole? (Also, how do I protect it from lightning?)

I have a project that requires a 87 foot long dipole antenna. Would it be possible to use a 44 foot long quarter-wave vertical antenna in place of it, to save space? And is there any DIY way to protect the antenna from lightning? How well do they work compared to store-bought lightning arrests?

How to make indoor lightning with Led Strip + Battery + Solar Panel?

Hello everyone, First thing first. As you know im new to this =) However, im familiar with wiring & soldering some easy parts. I will try describe my problem detailed as possible for future readers with same problem. My Grandmother living on a top of mountain for like 5 months in a year. As you gues, there is no electric. So, i decided to give her indoor lightning with solar enegry and led strip for at least 2-3h in a day. Place where she lives is mostly sunny. I can say thats about full sunny 3 months of 5 and semi-sunny or cloudy 2 months of 5 in total (There will be no autumn or winter usage). I'm not planning to use 5m of strip at one connection. There are 4 rooms in the house. I'm thinking 9 leds (or 12) in each rooms. Lets say 12 for fixed amount talk. That makes 12 x 4 = 48 leds in total. If light would not enough for her, can consider increase led numbers 24 in each rooms. Also dose not excepting light from leds as normal lightning. Just wanting she would be able to see whats around. My plan was simple before starting seacrh (LOL). 1 or 2 entry level solar panel(s). A backup battery (Li-Ion) charged via solar panel. And leds. So, things were not gone as expected of course. I had searched like 5-6 hours about this in past 3 days. I had read every similar situations (or a part of this) that i find on here or somewhere else (other forums). Situations was different all the time. But, i learned a lot. And this is not enough yet. I have learned there are a few types of 12V strip led (Do not remembering the link, sorry). But those are; 2835, 3014, 3528, 5050 and 5730. If i did not get it wrong, when number goes down brightnes goes down too. But, energy consumption goes down too. There are a few things about led strips to know: There is a Power Consumption number for all leds. But, that is not means all 5050 leds will consume same amount or other numbers. And its important about feeding your led strip. It depends on brand or manufacturer. If i didnt get it wrong (again). If you feed your led more than its required Voltage, it means you are grinding its life cycle. It will gonna die faster than normal life time. That is also causing overheat on leds strips. However, not sure if its life time will be longer than normal if you feed it with less Voltage. Forexample; feed 12V led strip with 11V. Did not see anything about it while searching. And last thing that i have learned about leds while searching is, led strips can be different on led numbers on them. Mostly (that i had read) they are 2 types on number. One is 60 leds on 1 meter and other on is 30 leds on 1 meter. The transformer in my Tesla coil fried, how can i prevent this from happening again? Answered

I recently built a tesla coil, and after some demonstrational use in school the transformer burnt out (it wouldn't do anything, and a red light appeared inside). I have already ordered a new one, but i want to prevent this from happening again. Any tips from experienced tesla coilers? thx in advance, all help is appreciated.                  additional details: transformer: 6500v, 21 ma. ordered here. the tesla coil has gone without sparking for a few seconds at a time, however resumed after turning it off and back on. could this be related to the spark gap length or something similar?

Tesla Coil Safety?

My high school recently had an engineering fair, and my friend had built a tesla coil. Its has multiple spark gaps, an RF filter (I think thats what its called), a 120 to 20000v transformer, and toroid top-load, if any of that matters. We/I would entertain ourselves by standing away from the coil and holding a fluorescent tube (by the glass with bare hands, not by the contacts) near the top-load and watching it light up. Even though I was well away from the coil, my forearm muscles would twitch, especially it the coil spark hit the contact on the other side of the tube. Then if anybody touched me, both of us would feel a shock and the same slight twitching (the same kind of twitching you feel from those electric muscle stimulators with the pads you put on sore muscles). We even set up a chain of about 5 people holding hands, and all of us would feel a shock, even though only the first person in the line (aka me)  was holding the fluorescent tube near the coil, with my hand on glass, no where within range of the streamers coming from the top-load. Now for my question: is this dangerous? (I know its non-lethal, im talking about my nerves) And what exactly was happening? because it was not an incredibly large coil, and i know that the field of a coil is much larger than the actual streamers. I also read somewhere that insulators dont work the same at incredibly high voltages. I think what I was feeling was the skin effect, and the charge came from the excited electrons in the tube. If my ideas are correct, then wouldn't me holding the tube be just the same as if i had just put my hand near the top-load and let the streamers hit me?

How do I convert a USB Plasma Sphere to battery power?

I'm trying to make a "tesla cane" (just a cane topped off with a working plasma sphere) for my cousin's steampunk-themed wedding. I already have a USB Plasma ball (Model is here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/964e/?), and I'd like to make it run off battery power. I'm good at soldering and dealing with small wires, but I've never measured voltage or anything like that. Advice? Has anyone attempted a project like this before? It seems like there are tons of "convert batteries to USB" tutorials but not many of the reverse. :)Thanks in advance!

Using an electric shock to trigger an arduino. (doorknob variety)

I was thinking a transistor, how does one make ~20000v at 5mA useful. Do I use a capacitor or a coil of some type? Do I NEED an amp? Will it be jittery? I was even looking at those alfoil leaf static detectors and imagining some sort of field detecting reed switch.. ? Think frankenstiens lab: lightning=reaction :)

How can I regulate amperage from going over a set point?

I have a very expensive IP addressable thermostat and the relays can only handle .5 amps, not very much at all, but for a 24 volt thermostat it is plenty. The house was hit by lightning 1 year ago and now I am getting spikes of .75 amps and I have fried 2 more $400.00 thermostats, can I use a resistor or some type of regulator to control this?

I've built a few disposable camera strobes, and want to use them in solar garden lights, instead of LEDs. Answered

 My problem is getting them to switch ON after dark.  The strobes draw about a half an amp, when the first start to charge.  A single AA rechargeable battery should last a few hours, but no idea on how do the switching with only 1.2 volts.  Any help or suggestions?  Was hoping to get a half dozen put together before Halloween, sort of a lightning-effect.?

Head unit not charging iPad

Hey All, In my car i have an after market HU with a usb port that my iPad 3/ iPhone 4s / iPods can connect to. However when my iPad is connected to it is unable to charge. The charging indicator in the iPad has the little lightning bolt going through it, indicating that it is indeed charging however the iPad looses about 7% of its battery every hour. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can get my iPad to charge through my HU? Cheers

Does anyone have an instructable on how to make an LED video curtain?

I would relly appreceiate it if someone could give me some insight regarding creating my own LED video curtain. I have a small haunted attraction and would love to be able to make a custom curtain in order to display different video effects, blood running down walls, cockroaches running accross the wall etc. I realize that I could use a projector to get the effects that I want but projector placement can be a REAL hassle when adding people, fog and simulated lightning to the mix. tech noob question on stereo jack

Can I have a silly technical question for which I would have known the answer if I only paid more attention at school? how is possible that stereo headphones, ie 2 speaker circuits use only 3 cables? I understand the "ground" is the one that both speakers,ie left and right have in common but how come it doesnt bother the signals which go to the speakers? doesnt the left signal get mixed up with the right signal? and why is it called "ground" when it's not actually connected to the ground, like for example lightning conductor is? I've read through the wikipedia article about TRS several times but still can't understand it. thanks for answer, I promis I won't forget it this time :)

Daft Punk Led

Ok so i've just thought about this, the new tron movie will feature the new daft punk helmet which actually seem easier. And that would be the newer thing that would be on mind in my opinion. So the Daft Punk helmet i wish to make is the one on the left. They help i am asking for is the required LED information. Guy-Manuel helmet with the 6x24 bright white LEDs. Thats all im looking for to do now , the Thomas one of the left im going to help my friend do, but i would like to be able to figure the Guy-Manuel one first .I just need to know where to look to figure out where to start on the LED electrical lightning part. I have huge 21 inch crt monitor which i found yesterday in the trash i plugged it in now. it works but the image has some distortions the color that should be black is bright gray and all other colors are like addition to it. the image looks very bright and with bright gray tint. setting brightness and contrast to minimum does not help much there are some kinda scratch lines across the display. the lines form a shape of a 'lightning' with horizontal lines and diagonal that connect them. the density of lines is higher when i switch to higher resolution the image size is severely affected by the brightness of what is displayed. it grows larger about 1 cm on each side when i open a window with white background other than that the monitor works ok in all resolutions from the bios screen and up to 1600x1200 what can be the problem ?

I've Recently Converted

To Linuxism. Please, hold your applause. ;-) A handful of you may know that I've been fumbling with Linux since early in this year, tried every distro known to man (and then some) and didn't get heads or tails of it. Well, it finally clicked. I don't know how and I don't know why, but it did. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron and I plan on updating to 8.10 when it comes out on the 30th. Out of all the distros I've found, Ubuntu's the easiest, and Hardy Heron is better than any earlier version I've tried. I customized it to look how I want, and installed some of my favorite programs. It runs off of my 2gb flash drive at lightning speed, but when I upgrade to 8.10 I think I'll install it on a 4gb SDHC card. Of course, this doesn't mean that I'm a Linux leet h@x0r or anything. Linux is a journey of knowledge, and I think I've finally got off on a good start.

Tesla coil configuration. Audio amplifier power supply?

If I am to use an audio amplifier as a power supply for a Tesla coil could I do without a spark gap and primary capacitor? I will be operating the coil within the audible spectrum (1Hz - 20KHz) so an amplifier fits the bill. It's a 2 channel magnetic field power amplifier rated for 750W per channel. That's 750RMS not 750IFL. (If lightning strikes) The current would flow as follows: Power Amp> 4ohm Load> NST 5000v 60ma> RF Choke> Primary Coil> Secondary Coil 1. Do I need a capacitor bank between the RFC and the primary? 2. Can a few feet of 28AWG galvanized steel wire act as a reliable resistor for the 300W current? What about 750W? If not, what can I substitute? 3. Can the amp hold together? I need it in one piece. Please point out the flaws. Thank you

Please help me solve this led thought

Hey every one I'm a tinker'er and well a dork lol . I am trying to make a device and I have 90% OF IT finalized .I wont fully explain what I am trying to build but i will give you a break down . enclosure box that holds 9 volt battery , brought down to 6 volts send through sound sensor  release 6 volts out . 2    3.3 leds   under powered at 3.0 each here's wjhat im trying to do = get leds to be independtly lit . I was thinking of using 2 sound sensors at different "levels" so it would throw the leds at different times . leds would be on oposite sides of the project box ... But wondering if there is a better way to use one sensor and allow both leds to alternate / also possible alternate duration . the effect im trying to get is lets say your in a 0 lite room turn this on and based on sound levels it would throw leds almost like lightning ??? it would have to alternate sides and alternate extend of liting times . Hope this is making sense :/

High voltage & marx generator

I'm looking at some instructables, and the simplicity of the cockroft-walton generator is quite interesting. Because I've always been fascinated by lightning and electric sparks (ever since I saw a wimshurst machine as a kid), I was thinking of building a CW generator, to power a small marx generator. Now, I found the parts, but I don't know much about electronics, so I have a few questions, and I was hoping someone here could help me out. 1) For ceramic capacitors, some are labeled for instance '15kV', while others are '15VDC'. I assume the latter only work for DC input, is this correct? 2) If I were to make a CW generator using a few 400V capacitors and a fuse (assuming I don't f*k up putting it together) like this: https://www.instructables.com/id/High-Voltage-Power-Supply-For-Marx-Generator/?&sort;=ACTIVE&l; imit=40&offset;=80 Is there a risk of blowing a fuse in the house, or is that fuse in the setup enough protection? 3) Is there any risk for other electrical devices, like a computer, when I plug this in? 4) I work at a computer repair shop, are there any useful components in power supplies, old screens...? Selection of presence sensor

Hi guys. For one of my university projects I need to detect the presence of a person in the shower. In order to do that what I have in mind is use a proximity sensor. If the target is in a distance range (let's say 20 to 50 cm) It will assume that the person is in the shower when the distance measure is no longer in this range then it will mean that the person left the shower. I need to detect all the time of the person in the shower (meaning when he/she gets in and then out). I have read a lot of info and forums to properly choose the type of sensor. However I still don't have a clear answer. About the Ultrasonic proximity sensors I know that they are cheap and more accurate by it can be affected by Temperature, humidity and some ambient noise, all of them which happen in a shower. The other option an Infrared one gets affected by lightning conditions and the surface of the target. The last option I checked is a PIR sensor I know it senses Temperature of the target, but I don't know if it will be affected by the running hot water and also is more expensive. In general, I don't know how the running hot water will affect the detection of the person in shower. Also,so again I don't know how this will work. Sorry for the huge amount of  questions, I am a little bit confuse with all the factors to have in mind. I am hoping someone out there can help a lost newbie like me and give me a suggestion. Power Surge Fried my Integrated Network Card?

At least, it seems this way. I while ago we had a weird "power surge like thing". It was odd... It seemed to "restart" some electronics...I was on my computer when It happened, it was like a really close lightning bolt. Though after it scared the crap out of me and I looked at my screen, the computer was still on and everything was running. Then windows started to act like I had just unplugged everything and plugged them back in. It started to read my flashdrive, my printer turned back on and announced the black ink was low (stupid $35+ ink :P), etc. Since it was going nowhere I just held the power button and shut er off. Then, later, after turning it all back on I found that it didn't have an internet connection. I finally got one after unplugging my router (Which I could still get a connection through the wifi) and connecting my modem to my comp through usb instead. I think it fried my NIC. ...crap Think that's what happened, and I'll have to buy a pci adapter instead? Thanks,RX --This is odd too. I went upstairs and my PSP, and Zune were both turned on. Neither were plugged in and both were completely off....and now it seems my tv is blown out.
