How accurate can a line following robot be? (Laser cutter idea inside)

I have no idea how accurate line following robots can be (and this is what I'd some clarification for), but could a cutting laser be mounted to one? The robot would just follow a black line that you've printed out, and in the process would have also cut out the pattern. If that would work, this would allow you to cut out shapes from a huge canvas size, as well as making quick stencils with a fine line Sharpie.

signal following robot? Answered

Hi community, i would really make a robot that follows a signal maybe wifi signal the idea is to keep a small chip (transmitter) in my pocket and the receiver would be installed on the robot body or the reverse, so the robot would follow the signal,  and im really thinking to use a tank body ( not wheels) with two  motors that will drive body  just as a tank or Caterpillar digger concept So can the community experts help me how can  i realize my dream, and tell me what could be the parts and how it would work?? Thank you so much community you have been always helpful !

Could someone please identify this board?

I was ransacking through my university's inventory, in a quest to find something to build a line follower robot. I did find something that gave me a positive gut feeling. However, I need to know for sure what exactly this board is and if it is suitable for a line follower robot that should trace a 1.5 inch black line on a white background.  Photo of the board attached. Thanks.

Line counting sensor?

I have a group (20) of small robots that need to all end on a certain line in a grid. My question is how can I get each car to count the number of lines it crosses and when it reaches the right number it stops. The problem is I have a budget of $75 dollars to make the guidance for every car. If there was maybe some sort of central controller that would work for each or maybe it is just cheep enough to make a simple set-up for each one. Any comments or questions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Zootsuitman

Does anyone know if technology exists whereby an object can be filmed and followed by a robot camera when moving at speed (i.e. with motion sensors)? Without the use of a tag on the object being filmed (i.e. like those used by Pixio and Soloshot)? Bearing in mind that the object would be contained within a specific radius.

using TSOP4838 in anti-collision line follower

i want to use IR sensors with emitter part ( IR led ) - calibrated with an IC timer to give 38KHZ IR signal - mounted side by side - not face to face like the counter module - to the receiver part ( TSOP4838 ) which will turn on once something reflect the IR signal back to the receiver. [ the default is that IR signals will go straight forever without being seen by the receiver ]. I've followed the steps of a circuit using IR sensor in an object counter module it included transistors to be triggered instantly as described http://i.stack.imgur.com/Qhoy8.jpg the problem is that it gives an instant pulse to trigger the 7-segment display. but in here i don't need it to be instant. how could i implement it to make the LED bright as long as i block the path [ not instantly ]. and to be off whenever there's no object in front of the robot

What IR source & two terminal Photo transistor can be clubbed to replace either QRD1114 or CNY70 reflective sensor pkg?

I'm referring to - Building of a SPURT BOT(a simple line following robot) submitted by ignoblegnome (See https://www.instructables.com/id/Build-a-SpurtBot-Line-Follower/). I'm building one for my cousin who's in the 7th grade & found this to be the most simplest & one that looks like its been made by a kid.           It looks so, as it has the least number of electronic components. But unfortunately i have been unable to find both QRD1114 & CNY70 reflective sensor packages. While going through the comments section, i saw a comment by the author himself saying that the package can be replaced with an IR LED & a 2 terminal Photo transistor which happen to be the same components that make up both QRD1114 & CNY70 packages. I would be extremely thankful to fellow users if they could mention the exact part/component number of the IR LED & a 2 terminal photo transistor that can be clubbed & used instead of QRD1114/CNY70 for the same voltage rating & circuit used in the instructable mentioned above. I need this info ASAP, THANKS a TON & kindly forgive me for my bad grammar.

So I am asking how we should place these sensors to get the least wobling and correct 90deg turns

can i increase wattage by the following way?

I think i can increase wattage by placing three coils in the following way / / / L m n among them 'L' as primary and m,n as secondary so that when electricity is passed through L magnetic lines of force from that coil induces current to 'm'.as electricity passes through 'm' it again sends magnetic lines of force inducing current in 'n'.so that connecting 'm' , 'n' in parallel or series will give me increased wattage

Creating a chatbot or conversation robot.

Hi everybody.  I have a quick question I would like to throw out there and hope somebody can help. I am in the early stages of making an autonomous robot and one of the functions I would like it to have is the ability to hold a conversation with people. I have made a previous cardboard robot as a proof of concept for my next build and used an iPhone chatbot app which worked quite well, but I would like to make my own stand alone chatbot.    I am aware of the likes of "Pandorabot" and "Cleverbot" ect, but what I would love to do is program my own stand alone chatbot using the available hard drive memory on an old laptop I have laying around collecting dust, and use the Windows xp voice recognition to talk to it (speech to text) and have it respond with a spoken voice (text to speech) which would come out of a Bluetooth speaker located in the robot. I know my way around a computer to some degree but do not know how to program (although I did follow a program written down once to make an  analogue clock many moons ago), but with some hopefully straight forward instructions I am willing to learn and give it a go. I have a rough understanding what AIML is but don't know what I would need to use it. I want to go down this road as I want to have it off line, i.e not have to rely on an internet connection, except maybe my home network to connect to another device, not to rely on a second party server, and would like to put the old laptop to some use.  I know I bit about teaching or training a bot to respond, i.e, giving multiple phrases or questions with one meaning (eg Hello, Hi, What's up, Hi there ect,) and the bot to recognise and respond accordingly, and I'm aware it will be time consuming, but it's the basics, or starting blocks that I'm after, getting a bot up and running and ready to be taught or trained, and if it's something I can get my head around and it's something I could realistically do, I would love to give it a crack.  So, Is it reasonably possible for me to use my old laptop for the sole purpose to use it as a chatbot, what would I need to set this up, Can what I need to know, be broken down in to easy to follow steps for me or anyone to follow who does not have experience in this field, And what recourses are there that I could use if needed? Any help, thoughts and suggestions that anyone can offer to get me started on this idea really would be greatly appreciated, and may be of help to others too as I have not seen this sort of question asked anywhere on the inter web in regards to just using a home computer / laptop. The only information I can seem to find relates to online bots. So thank you in advance for any help offered and I look forward to any responses. Steve.

What Arduino board to use? Answered

As a university project we are making a robot based around a arduino board. The arduino board need to be able to control four stepper motors, two solenoids and have inputs from six analog sensors. The stepper motors will be contolled via EasyDriver stepper motor driver https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/10267 and the solenoids via relays. Does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable board? Also in terms of analog sensors, we need to detect where a hole is under the robot. We were thinking of using a system a bit like a line following robot with use of IR detectors. any suggestions on that?? Thanks

The use of soft circuits in robotics

Sheets of touch sensitive material seem perfect for giving robots a "skin" of sorts. This could easily allow for something along the lines of a robot pet that can tell when it is being petted. It would also be useful for robot grippers, to allow the robot to hold on without applying too much force. With a layer of durable plastic between the circuit and the cloth, the robot could be made water resistant. Not really sure where else to take this, but I think touch sensitive, water proof skin (and also whiskers) would go a long way to making better robot dogs and cats, and probably other kinds of robots.
