PIC Microcontrollers

Hello. I'm just making my entrance into the world of microcontrollers. But as I self learning everything I have a few questions. I recently purchased 2 PICS (16F648A) and a programming board. The board works fine and I got it to connect to the computer and reconize the PIC. I guess my first question is, Is all hex code PIC specific? Meaning would I be able to use this code "http://www.voti.nl/blink/index_1.html#16F630" for my PIC? The models are very similar but not exact. If not, I would like to do the standard "Blink an LED" as my first project. How would I write my code for this PIC and what materials would I need? Thanks!

Programming a microcontroller?

Hi everyone I have got a MICROCHIP - PIC16F616 to play with, I am going to write a little program and load on it. http://onecall.farnell.com/microchip/pic16f616-i-p/8bit-flash-mcu-smd-16f616-dip14/dp/1332199?Ntt=1332199 However, I have a few questions before I do this. 1. How do I know whether language I should write? like C or Assembly? does it tell you in the datasheet (link above), because I don't seem to find it. 2. What kind of program do I need for loading the program into the chip? is it also an information I can find in the datasheet? or it is really some common sense between programmer. My supervisor doesn't offer much help... Extra question Here is the link of open programming, I am just curcious that if I build this programmer (I have one for my chip, but just wanna learn something), does it mean that I can use this to connect my microcontroller and my computer, so to load the program into the microcontroller? http://openprog.altervista.org/OP_eng.html Many thanks

Advice on microcontrollers

Hey everyone. Long-time member of the site, but just now starting to get into microcontrollers. Looking for some help on choosing a good, easy line of microcontrollers/programmer (easy to use without sacrificing too much function) which would be good for someone new to microcontrollers. Would the ATTiny line of microcontrollers be any good, or would pic be better? Oh, I'm also a university student so cost of the microcontroller/programmer is something I'd like to keep low (if possible). Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me. Either respond here or send me a private message ... Thanks again :)

sensors microcontrollers

Hiya guys is there anyone that can guide me to finding an instructable that deals with interaction in remote places using a micro-controller. For instance people in 2 different locations in the world, want to engage or enhance social bond or interaction by using a motion or proximity sensor and internet of things for instance triggering a sound or an led light that can be sensed in a remote location. So one location motion is detected and the other location this detection can also be seen, if that makes sense? For instance similar to this kind of project  http://goodnightlamp.com/ Could this be done? Thanks

Impossible to identify microcontroller? Answered

So I took apart a remote control for a cheap helicopter. There is a 14 pin microcontroller on board. Unfortunately it looks like any other 14 pin IC out there and there are no markings on it. Is there anyway to identify possibilities. For example if I mapped where each pin goes on the PCB. Luke pin one goes to the LED's, pin 2 goes to the joystick, etc. Is there any way to "read" the chip to figure out what it might be?

Advice on microcontroller selection

Hello I am a newbie to the world of microcontrollers and would be really grateful for some advice about choosing one. Basically, I’m doing a final year university engineering project that requires an MCU to take a number of analogue inputs, do some processing, and spit out an analogue output that will drive a loudspeaker. My supervisor has recommended looking at the Philips LPC2148 and associated development kits (http://www.olimex.com/dev/lpc-h2148.html) because it is cheap and looks able to fulfil the following requirements: I/O – three analogue inputs (so 3 ADCs), 3 digital inputs (two servos and a bus for programming the controller), and one analogue output (requiring a DAC either built into the development board, or one I could connect on an add-on board) Speed – a program size of about 500 floating pt operations, processing samples at a rate of up to 400/second, hence of the order 200,000 floating pt operations per second. I think the LPC2148 uses fixed pt arithmetic so would need to perform the equivalent of this in fixed pt. Support – in place debugging support would be desirable; ability to be run on Windows; overall hardware and software cost of £100 or less. Does this chip and its development tools look up to the job? If not, would you recommend an alternative? Are there any other major criteria I’m neglecting in the process of selecting a MCU? Many thanks, Sam

Need help to spec a microcontroller.

Hello! I am looking for a bit of guidance as I have limited knowledge in programming Microcontrollers...amateur experience covers a bit of Arduino and LabVIEW (mostly). My goal is to have an LCD display (Module size +- 65 x 40 mm, with SPI or I2C Comms, Monochromatic) to display small error message/codes and other information as for example temperature, speed, Test number and Timer. I do not know what would be the best Microcontroller to use that is off the shelf, that will still be in production for years to come and is "less complicated" to learn...from what I have read, perhaps the best microcontroller might be the Atmel just don't know what model (am open to other suggestions) Also there shall be 20 push buttons connected to the microcontroller. All that the microcontroller does is read the buttons as a byte and send it to another controller and receive information from that controller to know what information to display on the LCD. It shall also inform the controller of any error that it is experiencing.  I do hope that I am providing with clear and enough information so that someone could point me in the right direction.  Thank you in advance.

Like if I want to say when its lower than 1V on input0 it will open output 0 (which sounds a buzzer) for beginner projects. I don't expect examples. I example a yes/no answer. Survey on Physical Computing and Microcontroller

Dear user, I need YOUR help in order to get some insight into the substance of microcontrollers and physical computing. The basic question that needs to be answered is, what the problems are that occur in the process of physical prototyping, what the reasons for these problems are, and how these problems can be avoided. The results will be used in a bachelor thesis, that deals with this topic, trying to find out how easy - or difficult - it is to enter that particular field. I kindly ask you to follow the following link and to participate at this survey. http://www.kwiksurveys.com?s=NJDNHK_210fb8e2 Thank you very much in advance! Best starter microcontroller for project? Answered

Yes, i have already visited https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-choose-a-MicroController/, and it did not help me much.My last question was a bit ambitious, so I decided to restart with some more info. The project requires: (8) LED; (9)Toggle Switches; (2) Variable Resistors; [1] Relay (20 total)I'm new to this whole thing so I don't know which controller to choose. I did a bit of research, and I think the arduino will do what I need it to. But I don't know if the ATmega168 can be used without the board. (I need about 5 units). Will the arduino suit my needs? Or is there something better out there?

How to interface a microcontroller with a switch? Answered

I have a device with a lever-style switch, like the bottom switch in the picture of this article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_snap-action_switch With some multimeter probing, i found that of the three pins, the middle is unconnected. The left pin is always connected to ground. The right pin is connected to ground when the switch is unpressed. When the switch is pressed, the right pin is unconnected. How can I use a microcontroller to stand in for this switch? I'd like to have it activate the switch every 2 seconds. I have the software done, and just need to get the hardware set up. Help with finding a suitable microcontroller

Hey all! Ok so I'm having a ton of trouble finding a suitable microcontroller, and it seems like nobody else has every had the same problem because there is no other guides or instructions on it.  So first off it needs to be Arduino programmable, like the 2313, 4313, 85 etc. (AVR programable is it?) Then I need at least 4k to 8k memory, and about 20 pins.  I also need a small package, but not too small. I am just a hobbyist. The Attiny24a-SSU in the SOIC 14S1 14 package seems to be the perfect size, but it only has 2k flash, which is not  nearly enough for any real code. So I tried finding the the attiny84a-ssu and I couldn't find any sellers on ebay.  The ATtiny2313-20SU was also a good size, but only has 2k flash. So I tried to find the Attiny4313 in the same package size as the Attiny 2313-20su package size but couldn't find anything readily available.  Now obviously all these microcontrollers are purchasable on some chinese electronics website, but I want it to be a little more readily available, like on eBay.  Also there seems to be little to none documentation on these little guys as far as programming them with an arduino. It takes me hours upon hours sorting through outdated libraries to find the correct library for the board.  So, am I stuck with ordering from expensive electronic stores or is there another board out there that I can get on ebay for a fairly good price.  Thanks!
