Hey, I was wondering if I was allowed to make an intractable on adding a motion sensor to the Xbox 360. It is technically a mod.. And MSFT hates that.. Is it allowable? -n

I would like to mod a handheld radio (or even a analogue tv but radio would be better) to get to listen to higher frequencies than normally available. I'd Like to hit the 1420Mhz mark approximately but with little electrical engineering or architecture experience, I'm not certain how? Which might make a TV easier to get there as UHF covers that right? (still safer to play with a battery powered radio than a 240V powered one) I figured there is someone out there with the ability to figure out what components need changing? The variable resistor that tunes it perhaps? If you'd rather post an instructable I'll follow that or just tell me what needs replacing with what? Any Ideas?? Thanks

I want to make a pc case that has three different lighting options ie to either show, red, blue or green inside the case. I have ordered some cheap pre-wired led's but want to know what I need to do as I haven't got a clue about electronics and how to wire things up. I have two cases one windowed one I intend to. In an ideal world it would be great to have them alternate colour through some type of timer and also have manual option of switching between the 3 colours. Real WOW would also be if I could also incorporate sound activated as well. I have tried looking on some instructables but they seem to miss vital steps ie what wire goes where and from what source to what. Many THX

I've done some looking and I've come up with a few ideas on how to increase power in the tail rotor and make it a little bigger....to hopefully make forward and reverse flight a little faster.... if I am succesful is there an interest in this? would it be wanted as an instructable? also... I realize its not a load bearing helicopter..... but any ideas on ultra light cameras I could try out?

Ive been trying to do a mouse mod where an LED lights up everytime I click. Can someone please post an instructable? or else i will when i get it figured out. what i figured was that i would have an led with a resister hooked up to the 5v part of the circuit board on one of the legs.. then i would have the other leg soldered to a wire and to make the LED light up, the circuit would have to be completed by clicking the mouse down. But the problem is i cant do that without messin up the clicking function. when i tested it the mouse click would be stuck. So i will post an instructable when i figure this out if noone else does. please leave a comment if you figure something out.

I have always wanted to see my electrical usage in real time. However, the watt meters available can not handle whole house wattage. I have an idea but lack the programing skills to pull it off. Use a modified usb mouse to read the dial as it spins and tabulate the totals. Because of the distance through the glass to the meter disk- a laser pointer may have to be used. Required to work: USB mouse Modified mouse driver- must not be recognized as a mouse in the PC customizable display output. Laser pointer? Anyway, if someone could help with the software that would be great- Thanks

Hi Every one thanks for looking at my post. I have a specific project where I need 8 servos which would need to rotate up to 360 degrees. Please note I do not need continuous rotation mod, which would make me loose servo angle control. Given that i ended up with 3 options 1. Buy a winch or sail servo - these are costly about $40 and not sure if they suite my need. 2. Add an additional gear with 1:2 or 2:1 ratio (not sure about the terminology) of the main servo gear ( attached to pot); Servo rotates about 230 degrees now, so limiting it to 180 degrees from code and with the additional gear and modification I can get a 360 rotation on the added gear and use that as my main servo drive. 3. Replace current potentiometer with a multi-turn one ( available for around $2) with similar resistance value, this along with the potentiometer gear stop peg removal would give more than 360 degree rotation. Servo control would not be effected as resistance value is same and angle must be limited from code to keep the potentiometer from going to the end limits. I am just preparing and calculating the current gear values to decide on the specs needs for the gear mod. I need to measure servo pot values to find a suitable multi-turn pot. I would really appreciate if any one could comment on my approach and any alternatives. I wish some one had tried these before and could share their experience. Thanks Satya

So I recently got my hands on a Magellan Roadmate 6000t car GPS unit. It's pretty nice, and has a touch screen as well as tactile buttons on the sides of the screen. I don't really have any use for it as a navigation unit, since I know my city VERY well, so I am looking into making it into some sort of pda/minicomputer type of thing. Maybe not even for the Internet, just music, photos, etc. However, there is a catch. Whenever I turn it on, it shows a blue screen. This may be because it is run on Windows Mobile, and it has been disrupted, or because of a hardware failure. But when I connect it to a computer, nothing shows up. So I'm looking for ideas on what to do and HOW. Also, I have a Creative Zen Vision W that I think I might want to put win mobile or something similar on, but the GPS is the first priority. So, any ideas?

Hello! I am a graduate student at Pratt institute in Brooklyn, NY. I am currently working on my masters thesis in Industrial Design. My subject so far is: Hacking, 'making' and craft as a form of recycling and reusing - product life extension by the user. Basically, I am interested in keeping potentially valuable materials out of the ever-growing rubbish pile. Instructables were part of the inspiration for this thesis, and I am wondering if you would take a couple minutes of your valuable time to answer these questions for me. The questions might be a bit cursory or vague so your answers can be the same - I am also interested in the differing levels of humor involved in the motivation, process and results of the hacker and their 'products'. I would really appreciate your input, and I want to thank you for your time in advance! Disclaimer: None of this information will be used for anything other than my written thesis and 15min oral presentation in April (Which you can view, let me know if you want to attend!) - but, please do not divulge any information you dont feel comfortable sharing with my thesis class - use a good false name if you like, (or I can make one up for you) but please be as accurate as you can with all questions. Thanks! So here are some questions! 1 - Who are you (name), and what do you 'do'? How do your friends describe you? (ie- day job, side projects, labor of love, for fun, etc) 2 - What do you carry with you at all times? (keys, phone, wallet, knife, etc) Anything you consider 'unusual'? 3 - Are you a 'gadget person', do you need to have the new thing (iPhone or other smartphone, Macbook Air/EEEpc, etc)? What and when was the last computer purchase? Mac, Win (XP or Vista?) or Linux/other? 4 - What was (were) the last modification(s) you did? (electronic, soft, other) 5 - Do you recycle? (Paper, plastic, etc) How do you dispose of old electronics? 6 - Do you ever take other peoples, or buy old electronics, to hack? What was the last you did that with? 7 - With the popularity of publications like MAKE, CRAFT, ReadyMade - and websites and blogs like Instructables; are we are witnessing a new craft movement? (please explain) 8 - Can you explain the history of this movement (if you feel it exists)? What is your favorite part of the increased popularity of making, hacking and modifying? What do you think is the future of this movement? (looking near or far) 9 - How do think this change will affect Industrial Design, and the design/concept of personal electronics, shoes, tableware, furniture, etc? 10 - Is there a device, object, service, product, etc that you dream about, wish existed, half-joke about with friends? Is there a problem you feel strongly about? Something you feel is overlooked? 11 - Can you recommend anyone, or any resources you feel could be really useful in thinking about this topic? Alright! You are done! Thank you so much for you indulgent participation, I appreciate it so much! -Crankola-

I strive to keep my mods looking as original as possible, unless the intention is to be specifically not original looking." Topics: Retro Nintendo Nintendo mods Retro Apple Macintosh Apple Mods Unix Music Woodworking Guitars Virtual Machines Internet of Things It is still new, and is being populated with my 'older' mods, and once up to date, will be posted with new mods. My hopes is for this to be big enough to make it worth the work, so please visit and tell your friends! Please visit me, and let me know what you think! Let me know if you are a mod purist too! Thank you! Yes, I will post Instructables of some of my creations if it is a popular request!

(see photos) Anyways i got down into it, but i really don't know what i'm doing, i was just wondering if anyone could come up with a mod for it. so far i've managed to hook the little r/c car to a plug so that it had a constant electric supply, which kinda defeats it's purpose, but was good to figure out anyways i thought. Thanks! (despite the fact i googled for the image and took one of the first 5, this actually is the exact model i have. surprisingly convenient, thanks google!)

All the LEDs I have seem to have not so good throw. (Even my 3 watt luxeon is outmatched in throw by a 1.2-ish watt incandescent torch), so I was wondering how I coud increase an LED's throw. I noticed that the light from the globe was not very bright, but seeing as how it throws light in all different directions, it probably gave off just as much, if not more, light; probably why the reflector was there. So I figured that if I got a bunch of LEDs, then put them into a torch, pointing them to the side at the reflector, the throw of the light would be greater than if I just pointed the LEDs forward, right?

I recently up dug a "scanner" for a game that shut down a few years ago , it is essentially a barcode scanner as you would scan cards with barcodes on them in and it would interface with the game, i was wondering if anyone could figure out how to create a program that would allow me to easily see what data i put into it, that way i may be able to MAKE things encoded in a barcode i could scan in?
Question by shabaki
I recently bought a cheap mig gasless mig welder and I was doing some online reading about it. So I found out a mig welder should be DC, with gasless having the clamp at + and the torch at - . However when I looked at the schematic (in the images) and inside the welder to confirm it, and it was AC. So it turned out really cheap welders are ac. So my I want to try mod it to be DC. My question was, what diodes should I use? What Capacitors and capacitance do I need? And how do I design a Choke? I was looking at getting this diode: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MBRP400100CT-400A-100V-SBD-Schottky-Barrier-Rectifier-Diode-Module-/160930207205?pt=AU_B_I_Electrical_Test_Equipment&hash;=item25783015e5&_uhb=1 And then putting two of them together to make a full wave bridge. Would a Schotty diode Work? Or do I need a stud diode? And about what capacitance do I need? Would lots of 2200uF 50v capacitors in parallel work? Could I put in a variable ballast? and where would it go, on the 240v side or the output? Lastly, could I also add a modded microwave oven transformer for low voltage high current in parallel to boost the power? I guess I would have to wind it to have a similar voltage. Thanks

I saw this on the MAKE Magazine blog. A programmer (who actually knows how to bend metal :-) ) did a homebrew keyboard modification to allow himself to touchtype single-handedly after some left arm surgery. Using his left thumb, he can hot-swap all of the keys on the left side over to the right and touch type with only his right hand. Read the whole story, including some guidance on construction, on Daughtrey.

I am working on adding a helical antenna to a cheap USB WiFi adapter. My question is where do I connect the antenna to existing circuit. I've attached a closeup picture with three likely points. My three main questions are: 1) Where to connect the external antenna 2) Do I disconnect the rest of the onboard antenna (my gut says yes) or just add in the new 3) What impedance will the external antenna need to match? I assume the components between points C&B; and B&A; are for some kind of impedance matching.

I am not an electrician but I like to tinker. I am just getting started with DIY type electronics kits and I have decent soldering skills. I cant say I am an expert at reading prints, but I can usually build a simple schmatic. I wish to disassemble a heat gun for parts and add in a potentiometer to vary the heat, another potentiometer to control the airflow, and a digital temperature probe with temp display. I am attempting to build a heat generating device with precise control of the temperature and airflow. I dont really want to spend $150 on a fancy LED digital display heat gun with variable heat dial, so this is my next option and potentially a heck of a lot more fun. Initially I just want to get the variable heat and airflow control(potentiometers) hooked up, and if it will be easy enough I can later install the temp display. I could always just use a cheap "laser" temp probe to check the temp and ensure it is fairly stable. The heat gun I am looking at is a piece of junk and it only has 2 temp settings. How easy is it to install a potentiometer for varying the heat and one for the airflow? I assume I can just install the one for heat control inline after the circuit that sets the maximum heat level and dial in the temp I want. As for the airflow control I assume I could do the same thing, but instead put it before the power lead feeding the fan. I am not an electrical engineer so I want to make sure this will work first before I fry my cheapo $20 heat gun. Would it be bettter to just gut the entire thing and work with the naked parts and install my own circuit to control and display the temp or could I keep the basic unit intact and mod from there? Any ideas, or a basic schematic that would satisfy this requirement would be greatly appreciated.

I hope this is the right forum for my question. Earlier today I was watching a show on Netflix (Mythbusters) and they were using some one way glass. I was just wondering how light behaves towards this. For example if I used some one way glass in the side of a computer would I be able to see the light from LED's? The LED's would reflect on the mirrored side, wouldn't they? So would the light be magnified when I look through the clear side? I hope what I was trying to say was understandable.
