Alright i'm converting this old vex system into a rc car and the motor has and idle speed that can be controlled with this small potentiometer and when i turn it so the idle is off when i use it (i use it for steering) and when i use it the idle turns back on and iono what to do any ideas i tried using a resistor but it leaves too little voltage for the motor to turn the steering arm well

Stepper Motors..

I recently pulled two stepper motors out of a working IBM dot-matrix printer. One larger, 3v one with 1.8 steps. The other is a smaller, 9.5v one with 7.8 steps. I am more interested in the large one right now. I managed to find out that the large one has center-tapped coils. I also found out that Coil 1 is red-white-brown, coil 2 is blue-black-yellow. I found the schematic below on was wondering how this could be adapted to control my motor from a PC program with the ULN2003 (that chip sounds like UT2003)? Here are the complete residences of what I found on the wires with a multimeter, in case that helps. Resistances:Red to Brown: 8 ohms (or 7 some times)Red to White: 4 ohmsWhite to Brown: 4Blue to Yellow: 7Yellow to Black: 4Black to Blue: 4

Brushless Motors

I have a few fans around from computers. Seems that 3 wires is pretty common for these. I wasn't sure which was what, so, I figured "nothin to lose" and hooked up the right voltage across 2 wires. My guess was right. It ran. But, having 1 out of 9 fanblades busted off, it shook a bit. So, I busted off 2 more blades to balance it. But now, even connecting it the same way, it doesn't run. So, how should a 3 wire brushless motor fan be wired?

Motors for Quadcopters

Hi, I am looking to make a quadcopter as my university project and I kinda run in to some problems deciding which motor I need to choose. I was thinking to choose brushless motors as they are more efficient and they give more RPM. HOwever, my professor says that there's no point using brushless/stepper motors as u can get the same RPMs using brushed motors and its the same thing. Hence, can anyone please guide me which motor is best to use and why should I use brushed or brushless motors. I shall be very glad if someone guide me through it. Thank you :)

Just as an exercise, in case I am "thinking too small" what would you do with such a motor? It looks a LOT like this one:

Motorized Futon?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I was just tryin' to see if I can find some help for some questions I have. The basic story is soon my brother's moving back into my house, limiting me to one 9x10 room rather than the two I have now. I wanted a futon, but I like building things and creating things, so I thought I'd build my own. Then I thought I could motorize it.The concept is the same concept as the automatic windows on many modern cars. Press the button once, the motor goes until it's at the end, and a relay switches and it stops. Simple enough, right?I'm just not sure which parts to use. I saw this, and thought it'd be enough. I think I did the math and it's something like 150-ish pounds per second [torque](referance: )I'm not sure if that's too strong or not strong enough-- or if it'd even work! Now, I already have the design all set out, I know how I can get the futon to work, and the tracks and everything. For the relay, I was thinking of putting 2 metal plates at each end of the track, attaching the metal plates to springs, so once the motor pushes against it, it hits a relay and shuts the engine off.I'm just not really sure how to do any of this. Not really sure what relays I need or anything like that. Any help would be nice. :D

Electric motor specs? Answered

I have the disc motor out of a Polaroid portable DVD player, and would like to use in one of my projects. However, it doesn't have an indication of what power it needs on it. There is a serial number or item code on the side, but no manufacturer to check for a data sheet, and Googling  the code (TM2458 on the top line, GG54 on the bottom line) yields no results. I need enough information to power the motor using either a battery or Arduino. Please help?

Motor and circuit choice

Hi folks, I'm a first time poster on here but I have been browsing the site for years.  Finally taking the plunge and starting my own project. I have a mechanical setup to turn a motor and charge up some devices.  I want to keep it simple for starters and charge up something like a smart phone.  I'm a complete noob when its comes to electronics so I'm looking for some help. What I am wondering is, what motor (or stepper motor) would be best suited to generating enough volts to charge a smart phone, and what would I need to do to be able to hook up the phone to charge? I have had a look around the site and have found lots of stuff but since i'm not really sure what I'm looking at, and I dont want to go purchasing anything till I know what I need to purchase, I thought it safer to ask first. Thanks in advance for your time and your help. Paddy

Induction Motor Wiring?

Hi, I've recently bought a Clarke Induction Motor with these specs: 230V 1 Phase 2 h.p. 1.5 kW 1330 rpm 50 Hz 9.4 Amps Capacitor Details: 50 micro Farads 450 V I have been looking all over the internet on how to wire it up to go into 240V mains (UK) but I can't find a thing. In the terminal box there are 6 terminals labled V1, V2, U1, U2, W1, W2. A brown wire connected to U2 and a blue wire connected to W2 lead off to the capacitor.  A red wire connected to V2 and a white wire also connected to W2 leads off into the motor. Another red wire connected to V1 and another white wire connected to W1 also lead off into the motor. Nothing is yet connected to U1. Please see the pictures which make this a lot clearer. (I have removed the capacitor from the blue catch for the photos) I have looked all over the internet and there seems to be no mention of anything. I basicly need to plug this into mains (therefore 3 wires, live, neutral and earth - obviously earth goes to the motor casing) So which wires go where? Also, the website of the shop that I bought it off said that a 10-16 Amp starter is required. What does this mean/do? Can you just plug it into the mains without this starter. It is probably obvious that I am somewhat of a rookie in motors! Thanks very much in advance for any help!

Stepper motor driver?

Hi! I am trying to find a good h-bridge for a 3 volt stepper motor. Basically my plan is to build a stepper motor controller with an arduino for controlling various functions in a model kit. I have the arduino-kit and the motors. But I need a good reference for a h-bridge, but all i can find are chips rated for much larger drive currents. Also exactly how hot does a hbridge get when under load? I would like to integrate the bridges into the kit, but since it is plastic, I would like to know in advance how hot it gets, and if it gets too hot I'll have to look at another solution.Any help appreciated! PS. If you can please put the hbridge part ID in your answer for easy reference. DS.
