Neon Sculpture HELP!!!!!

I am looking for any information about fixing a neon sculpture we purchased in 2002. You folks seem pretty technically astute so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I live on a fairly rural island, the one sign shop here told me they would fix it if I could find parts. (They tested the bulb, which is fine, so it's either the transformer or the power cord). I know that's not very do-it-yourself, but I don't know anything about neon. It broke when I ran the vacuum over the power supply cord, I remember it made a "pop" noise. Anyway, the piece is mostly metal with a small (20" long) neon bulb attached. The transformer is only about 2" long, 1/2" wide. I tried to replace the cord from radio shack, they couldn't be sure they sold me the right one, so I'm still stuck. The dc output from the old cord is 12v, 500mA. The company that manufactured it was Neon Specialties, the cord also says "Moser & Co" on it. I couldn't find anything on the Internet. Anybody have a source for replacement parts? Or any advice? The piece has a lot of sentimental value to my husband, that's why I would like to fix it. Thank you!

How to synchronize the brightness of a grille-mounted neon tube/LED bar to a car's tach/speedo?

I have a 1997 BMW 328i, and I've been thinking about installing either a neon tube or a bar of LED's in the grille of the car to use at night (most likely not street legal, I know). I want the brightness of the tube/bar to be controlled by one of two things: The speedometer or the tachometer. I.e., if the speedometer is at 0 MPH, the light is off, and if the speedo is at 75 MPH, the light is fully on. Same thing with the tach, light off at 0 RPM, light fully on at redline. Unfortunately, I haven't the slightest idea how to use the car's computer or the gauges themselves to set up a control module for the light. If any of you has a good amount of knowledge about automotive gauges, I would appreciate your help!

My NST is buzzing- how do I stop it?!?!?

Hello, I am in the final steps of perfecting a Tesla Coil that I started a few months back. I only got the spark gap to fire in one test run. Every other time, the circuit does nothing, and my new 10 kv neon sign transformer buzzes loudly and ominously. I'm really worried that I'll burn it out. Why is it malfunctioning? How can I fix the problem?Update: After a little experimenting, and checking all connections, I've found that the one time that the spark gap fired happened because of a wiring error (i connected the gap in series to the transformer instead of parallel); this resulted in a spark across the gap, but no oscillation. I'm starting to think that the capacitor's are the problem. I originally believed that the required capacitance was .003 uf, but I recalculated that and found that it was actually .0079 uf. This could explain why a spark couldn't jump. I'll order some more, and see how that goes. Thank you all.

Does any one know how to make an Ne-2 joule thief ??

Recently I’ve been researching on how high voltage joule thief works. The popular high voltage joule thief videos out there are known as Jeanna’s light if I’m not mistaken. I also built my own little LED joule thief circuit, it appear success after all with a 2n3904. But I want to take the concept a little bit further, so I decided to attempt on the high voltage joule thief circuit. It appear no luck, I have 120 turns for high voltage on my ferrite core (1 turn = 1 volt). I know it’s the same principle as the LED joule thief but with the LED removed. I have two 1kohm resistors and I connected them in parallel to get 500ohm resistance. I connected them all like the LED joule thief, but it seems like I did something wrong.  So I ask for further instruction. Parts that I use: 40 or 30 gauge magnet wire (high voltage windings) 20 gauge magnet wire 2n3904 transistor (Don’t know if that’s the right transistor for this circuit, but it’s for experimental purposes only.) 2x 1Kohm resistors in parallel = 500 Ohm resistance AA rechargeable battery. The thick magnet wire are 7 turns.

Ideas for creating a portable Tesla coil

I am in the process of planning a small-ish Tesla coil that can fit inside of a medium-sized hard shell suitcase. I would like to be able to power it without using a wall outlet, which most likely means with 6v lantern batteries or 12v lawnmower batteries, but if you have any other suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. I would prefer to keep the coil as simple as possible and maintain a spark gap configuration rather than a solid-state one because I am not very good at soldering small parts. I was thinking about using a neon transformer from a set of car under lights such as these (is there anything there which would work especially well?) or perhaps a modified ignition coil with a mechanical interrupter, similar to a Ruhmkorff coil (I have no idea how I would do this, but it sounds like it would work). Your thoughts? Also, instructions on how to construct a flat 'pancake-style' secondary could be beneficial.

What could it be? Car died. I lost all compression on all 4 cylinders in my car ?

This is a 2000 Dodge Neon 4 CYL 16 valves,SOHC engine. Ok. On oct 1st I was driving about 60 mph for about 6 minutes after leaving my house in the morning I heard a noise that sounded like a pulley belt then the car turned off, pulled over to a parking and checked to see if a belt broke and they both were there. I checked the timing belt still on. try to start it and the timing belt look to be ok and turning. I did notice that when cranking it sounded weird like it had no compression at all at the pistons. I towed the car home checked the compression an all 4 cylinders and I was right I had no compression at all on all 4 cylinders. I see the timing belt turning when I crank it so I know for sure that it can't be the timing since the belt was replaced MAY, 2009 when the water pump went bad along with a new pump and rebuilt head w/brand new valves. I'm not sure what 's going on all i know is when I crank it the timing belts turns, the pulley belts all turn fine. This is the first time I had this problem. I fix all my cars but this is a first for me. If anyone has any idea what could it be I appreciate your help. I just spent a lot of money on this car so I need to have an idea before I start pulling it apart after installing a new head gasket set with all the new parts. THANKS

LED glow tubing question?

I am thinking of putting some glow tubing on the inside of my 14 foot jon boat, mainly for night fishing. It would also make it look really cool at night. The concept is simple, some of you may know - clear tubing from the hardware store, filled with water, with an LED in either end. This should light it up even if it is curved, right? I want to put long tubes running the length of the boat, on the inside groove of the side runners. That would mean 13+ feet of slightly curved glow tubing. I may have to end up splitting the glow sticks into smaller sections, but would like to see if I can do long single tubes. I'm concerned that the light will fade out in the middle considerably. I'm OK with it fading a little, but I don't want it to be noticeably bad. Will a narrower light beam help solve the problem? (found some 12 degree online) I will go for the narrowest beam and highest candlepower possible.  Am I on the right track? Got any advice?  Thanks a bunch

9kV 50mA tesla coil NST question. Why does the circuit breaker in my home trip when i plug in my NST?

Please someone help, this is my first tesla coil project, my setup: 230VAC 50Hz input ricci 9000v 50ma NST with a built in GFI (ground fault interrupter) but i bypassed the gfi succesfully .see pics safety gap  7,5 cm diameter pvc secondary 1000 turns #24 magnetwire (0,5mm) secondary 10 turns 8mm copper pipe primary (tapped at 7 turns) saltwater capacitor 16 green beer bottles in a bucket with a capacitance of 0,0122 uF or 12,2 nF (thegeekgroup bucket cap) static spark gap 28mm diameter stainless steel spheres as electrodes with oven fan (temporary, i am building a hyperbaric gap) 10cmx27,5cm aluminum toroid topload with a brass screw as breakout point RF ground aluminum rod 1,2 meter  When i tested the coil for the first time the spark gap was set on 6mm and i got 20cm or 8inch streamers without breakout point but the gfi on my nst tripped after a few seconds. i didn't know there was a built in gfi on my nst so i fooled around with my spark gap and safety gap and the tapping point on the primary hoping to get better performance. after a few runs the gfi started to trip very fast and i could only run the coil with the spark gap set on max 2mm, any bigger then that would trip the gfi on the nst. so i found out that it had a gfi and i bypassed it with thick wire. Then when i ran the nst i got the exact same thing but with my circuit breaker in my home. i have made a video on youtube that shows the problem here is the link: (please help) please anyone help me! Any help or suggestion is very welkom!

Testing a NST with a DMM?

I have been looking for a good (and cheap) NST for a while but i dont want to risk spending too much on a NST that doesnt work. I know that my local scrap yard has a large supply of old NSTs that are either there because both or one side doesnt work, they were upgraded, or someone needed the money and/or space. i also know that they would frown upon me wiring each one up and testing each. so onto the real question: is there a way to test a NST with just a multimeter and possibly a battery (i know thats how some people test for flyback transformer pins) or if checking continuity would be enough or even another way? Just so everyone knows i have spent quite a while searching for someone using this technique but didnt find anything, also im looking for a way to know for sure if one or both sides are working.

I got a NST!

I recently bought a 11kv, 30mA Neon Sign transformer. I can get nice arcs off of it and everything (maybe about 2 inches? when rectified it makes shorter high pitch arcs), but I'm wondering about protecting it. after a couple hours of playing with it there was a loud pop in the case and it stopped working. I opened it up (it was held together by rivets, I just drilled the rivets out) and it's a switched mode neon sign transformer. I thought it was a bit light! So I found a (transistor? To-220 case) that had it's face blown off, luckily I found the other piece and I'm going to order the component and replace it. So, is there a cheap easy way of preventing this happening? While opening the case I added a number of saftey features, a saftey switch, and a "ON" indicator.

Touch pad using tester logic? Answered

Hi everyone,                  I was planning to make a doorbell of which's switch is a touch pad.I tried understanding the logic behind the touch screens used in i phones and such otherd but they seem a bit complicated.Another solution I got was a circuit which has two free wires and when a person touches the two wires(creating contact),the load gets power. This is based on transistor switching. But I don't want to adopt this design since........ I don't know for some reason. Then I remembered those classy electrical testers(seen in the picture). They have a neon bulb in them which glows when they get a voltage of certain range from one end and our body is used as ground when the other end is touched. So if I use this mechanism I just have to use the setting to power the load when a metal plate connected to one end is touched by a 'user'and a voltage is given through the other end.I know these things usually have a neon bulb as they handle AC voltage. Finally here's what I actually need to know- Is it possible to build such a circuit where a 12 VDC is supplied to one end and the load is given power when the other end meets ground(here the person touching the pad).Maybe this might be a total jabberwocky but anyway contribute your valuable suggestions. If anyone has seen such circuits elsewhere, a schematic could be really helpful.Thank you in advance.
