outdoor pc box

I have a big outdoor plastic closet with shelfs in my garden. i want to place a pc with crt screen inside heating the space in which the pc and screen are to be located is 1/4 m3 (1 m wide x 1/2 m deep x 1/2 m height between the shelfs) or 1/2 m3 (1 m height) but with other objects sharing the space the computer is a pentium 1 (~40 W power). it is intended to be on for long periods with the door closed. the closet stands in a shaded place but air temperature outside can get to 35 C + sometimes. i dont want to cut vent holes in the closet the monitor (15 crt) is off when the door is closed. though i may switch it off and close the door while it is still hot how to prevent overheating ? is a water tank thermostat set to 45 C in the air near the pc (with the 240 V to the pc going thru it) good enough thermal protection ? insects we have lots of ants. how to protect the pc from them ? will the hot air in the closet be enough to distract them ?

Outdoor listening installations

Would appreciate some advice on this project.  I'm putting together a proposal for a series of outdoor sound installations in a nature park.  a couple of the installations will be places where you can plug in headphones to listen to certain sounds captured live from a microphone in an interesting place- for example a hydrophone in a pond.  The plan is that the mic will be hooked up to 3.5 jack sockets and listerners will be able to plug in their own headphones.  Now obviously there needs to be some amplification because the mic signal level will be far too quiet to hear on headphones. I need a power amp that will be powered through a solar panel.  My question is, shall I just use a headphone amp, like the Behringer ha400 or make my own power amp circuit? I need to be able to make everything sturdy and fit into a weather proof junction box to protect it from the elements. I have done some experiments with an LM386 power amp module but there was so much background noise and it didn't pick up the mic level at all (may have been a problem with the mic I was using,it was a crappy little lapel mic.- I did get a signal from a piezo disc but it was again really crackly and noisy.)  If it is best to build a circuit with a power amp module, could people make suggestions of ones that will sound good and clean, and work with stereo headphones.  Thanks a lot Ash

Outdoor electronic log drums.

We would like to make some outdoor drums made from logs that when hit trigger a relay which turns on a light. It it is proving to be very tricky to get a reliable system. We have tried using microphones with a small circuit to detect when triggered, these have worked the best but we get many false triggers and other times not triggering at all, we have tried adding pre amps to these microphones to try to boost the signal.  We have also tried to use capacitive touch sensors on top of the logs but again, many false triggers. The set up is installed outdoors for over a month and can sometimes be made to work but then the temperature and humidity will change and this causes them to false trigger or to not trigger at all, we are currently toying with the idea of hall effect or reed sensors, many of set into each log with a neodymium magnet in the end of the drum stick. If anybody has any ideas of how we can make a reliable system for installation outdoors that works through all the temperature and humidity changes please let me know.

NASA style outdoor countdown clock

My problem;  as a father of two young girls, for years I have joked about getting NASA's countdown clock and placing it on our yard when they begin to date.  And start cleaning my largest guns when the clock hits @ 15 minutes or so.  Originally I thought this would be cost prohibitive- I mean, the thing is huge, and they used tax dollars to pay for it, so how cheap could it be?  Reading online about it today, I see it's been in use since the Apollo days, and it uses 40 watt bulbs, so I'm thinking (pardon the pun here), it can't be rocket science.  I don't need this to be in scale, but Id like something view able from the street, rather than a kitchen timer kind of thing.  And while I'm handy with a skill saw, I'm more of a car guy than a computer geek, so I don't even know where to start.  Ideally, I guess Id like the numbers somewhere around 12" or so, maybe larger.  Any thoughts, or experience?  The oldest starts dating in less than a week...

Outdoor RGB LED Strip Failure

Hi all,  I've had quite a modest installation of RGB LED tape (45 meters ish, split into more manageable circuits) around the perimeter of my decking. This uses the commonly available 5050 RGB LED Strip light, the type with the epoxy covering the tape and also an outer sheath to protect it from water ingress.  I had heat shrinked the ends and also applied multiple layers of liquid electrical tape where a connection to a 4-core cable was needed. This has held up well for some time.  After about 2 years, I noticed that some of my RGB LED tape runs were sort of 'corrupting' where a small amount of moisture had got in, and shorted the RGB channels so that no matter what I feed into the tape, it always output white (or some other combinations or colours). Still, I ignored this, as it didn;t bother me too much.  These ran back to a central controller, which did the DMX control and amplification of the 12v single.  Anyway, to cut a long story short: Yesterday I smelt smoke.  I was walking around the garden and I noticed that one of the strips had caught fire, at a single point in the middle, and was burning a hole through my decking!  Again, long story cut short, I put this fire out and looked closer. The strip was so badly burnt that I can't determine what went wrong here.  I'm thinking maybe a resistor burnt out and caught fire? The tape has been running 'on' for quite some time (weeks) so this is a possibility.  Another possibility is that there could have been a short between 12v and ground, which caused heat. Now, there aren't any fuses on the 12v rail (fuse and circuit breaker protecting the 240v side) but I wouldn't have thought that this would protect me from a fire anyway!  I'm interested whether anyone else has had a similar experience or has any suggestions as to why this has happened.  I love these RGB LED strips, use them a lot in my house, but after seeing this, I'm not a little more dubious to keep using them.  I'm an electrical engineer (in the making, at University) and this has stumped me!  Thanks Joe

How good of a projector do I need for projecting movies outside at night?

Going to try to set up an outdoor movie theater in my backyard.  If I was only going to use the projector at night, how bright of a projector would I need?  From articles I've seen, 2000 lumens is the usual answer.  I'm just wondering if I could get away with 1000-1500 lumens because the projectors I've seen that can output 2000 lumens aren't that cheap.... So could I get away with less than 2000 lumens?  And can anyone recommend any projectors that work well outdoors that are on the cheaper side?

Solar Panel Construction

Hello Everyone, this is my first forum post!I had a question and couldn't think of a better place to turn to than this.Basically, I am constructing, or planning to rather, an outdoor picnic table. I want to add some gadgetry to it and make it more multifunctional. Sorry to be vague, but a lot of it is still being worked out and since I'm going to post the project on here anyway, I'd like to wait to present the entire project as a whole. My question involves the use of solar panels as a table top surface. I have a basic understanding of how to create a solar panel powered system (http://www.rain.org/~philfear/how2solar.html or https://www.instructables.com/id/Solar-Power-System/). But my question is this: does covering the solar panel with a piece of acrylic hinder its power collecting abilities? I'm thinking of covering the entire table top surface of my table with solar panels. Aside from the obvious downfalls of people using the table and blocking sun, I thought there would be enough time when its not in use to collect power. But obviously I can't have people eating right on the panels and damaging them. Any guidance would be GREAT! I just want to know if I should even entertain this design idea or separate the panels from the table altogether. Thanks!

How to backlight outdoor metal wall art? Answered

My friend is buying a piece of wall art (around 1.2m x .8m) which is an image of a bird (I have not seen it yet, but lets say it looked like the attached image, it is metal, flat. It is going to be hung outside and they would like it to be backlit, so it is visible at night.  They were quoted $130 for a perspex sheet with LED lighting, which seems steep to me, there should be a cheaper way to do it DIY. Any suggestions. Scott

Koi Cam- outdoor webcam for submersion in pond?

I would love to try to build a webcam that I can submerge in my pond to transmit video of koi swimming in my pond.  My idea is to place a marker outside of my garden pond that someone can scan using Aurasma (augmented reality program for smartphones) and then show a live feed of an underwater camera of the fish swimming in the pond.  I thought about simply using a very cheap small usb camera, seal it in a clear waterproof case and run the wire outside the pond.  The problem is, I don't want to leave a computer (even a old one) outside running 24-7 to plug into and power source is a bit of an issue even though one outlet may be available.  I thought of  using a wireless or rechargeable webcam, but i don't want to have to pull it out of the pond constantly to recharge it and i don't think i can transmit far enough for my main computer's wifi to grab the video if it is underwater.  Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?  i am trying to do this super-cheap... so want to avoid any costly options...preferably less than $50.

Powering 12v LED strips from a 12v battery?

My situation is this, theres this old farm building i want to do up and make into a chill out room, but the place is not connect the any type of power supply, or if it was im not gonna try and fix it. i just want to get some lights in the place to make it look good, nothing major just a strip of leds running along the floor lighting the walls.  If i bought a simple 12v led strip  and a 12v battery box ( the ones that support AA) how long would that last for? i need it to work for at least 3-5 hours. if this is impossible would a 12v solar panel be better ? something like this  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-12V-SOLAR-PANEL-BATTERY-CHARGER-CAR-CAMPING-CARAVAN-/230995256615?pt=UK_Gadgets&hash;=item35c863e527 i could just connect the croc clicks (or cut them down and solder) them straight onto the led strip ? if both these are bad ideas im open for suggestions also would i be able to have a controllable LED strip to be able to run off these two types of power ?  (and just a random add on question, if i wanted to power some speakers without it connecting to the mains how would i?) Thanks for any help or suggests and reading :) !

Rangefinding device for my dog, (telemetry/radio/range finder/outdoors) Answered

I know a fair amount with electronics, so i was PRETTY frustrated when i looked around online for a method of rangfinding that i could build into a small device. I have been wanting to have a project for awhile, so i am not just going to buy one. Anyway the inspiration comes from me and my dog, you see, hes a Jack Russel, and very eager, he loves to chase rabbits but i can never find him after he has run off into the forest, by that time he is too far away to hear me.I want him to chase rabbits because he loves it, but i can't use a lead because it gets caught on everything(Trees, plants, thorns and general vegetation). So i had an idea, if i could just have a device that would tell me how far away he is, then i could just use that to work my way towords him.The process seemes quite simple to me, give him a transmitting collar, and have a device that recieved that signal, and could use the basic distance = speed x time sum to work out how far away he is, then display it. Apparently, either nobody has ever tried this, or i just ain't searching for the right thing.I know radio waves seem to be optimal, seeing as he won't be more than 1KM away from me, but again, i don't really know where to look to find the parts, or how to build the thing in the first place. So please, if anyone could help me out, please do.My physics teacher is a real **** and refuses to help me.So you guys are all i have to ask. Thanks. /James PS: My dog would be REALLY happy too, he hates being on a lead all the time, and if i could get this done, i will post pictures of him, apparently hes really cute.

Arduino Outdoor Security System - PIR Motion Sensor, Security Lights, Intruder Warning/Alarm & Blynk Notification

I would like to ask your suggestions on how to build an outdoor ESP2866 security and sensors combo. I have seen separate postings on PIR and lights around the site and in other websites so I thought it would be doable. I knew Arduino then but only paid close attention when I realized that my x-10s are outmoded but z-wave devices are expensive. So I am learning about it, how to sketch and trying to understand C++ more. My dream is to build an outdoor ESP2866 combo, powered by an AC120v-5v module, with two PIR motion sensors, three 120v relay switches (two relays for two sets of security floodlights and one relay for an amp/wave speaker with mic), a photo (dusk/dawn) sensor and temperature/humidity sensor (for a future thermostat). Operationally, I imagine that it could be armed and disarmed through Blynk. When armed at daytime, a motion will trigger a low volume intruder MP3 warning alert with 10 minutes of security lights at night. But if the trigger persists for more than 5 minutes, the security floodlights will blink, a loud intruder alarm will sound and push phone notifications. What will be the best way to sketch these? What is the better way of wiring them together? How could I make multiple ESP2866s in the same WAN work together for an event? The desired function is if an alarm event is triggered in one of the ESP2866 that would also set off blinking lights and alarm sounds in the other ESPs. Thanks for all your help.

Solar Powered Electric Wheelchair

I would like to put a Challenge out there for anyone to come up with. You see, I am in a wheelchair and I would love to go hiking with my son, but my chair can only go so far before it needs to be plugged back into a socket. But it dawned on me that if I had a Solar Powered Option to my chair, nothing could hold me back from being outdoors again. Ok yah,  it would help if I could redesign the platform & wheels too, but that's not the most important part... I NEED POWER. I'm converting an old gas char-Broil outdoor grill, now used as a charcoal grill, to an electric smoker. See details.

For my initial design I'm using junk box parts (electronic hobbyist/pack rat).  The heating element is a 120vac, 500w burner previously used as an electric charcoal lighter.  The grill cavity is 15"H x 14"D x 25"W, with two rack heights leaving room for the burner, water pan, and possibly lava rocks/bricks.     The question is about temperature control.  I understand 500w may or may not be enough.  I'm considering a DIY full wave open loop SCR control, as I have many of the parts.  The purely resistive load is @2.4-2.5 amps and should be able to be temperature controlled using  demand oriented transfer or phase angle firing w/diacs.  I want maximum control cheaply and am having trouble selecting an appropriate design.  I have larger current SCR's in case I need a larger wattage elment. What can contributors suggest?
