Thermoelectric plates not working?

Hi, I am doing a school project and i need to power 8 LEDs with 10 thermoelectric plates, so i soldered 2 on one led and put them over a candle, the LED didn't light up and i don't know why. Is the voltage too low? If so will i be able to power 8 LEDs with ten of these in parallel?  Thanks for any help in advance!

Powering Peltier Plates

Hey guys,So, I just got a Peltier plate, a device that gets very hot on one side while very cold on the other. It requires 90 watts of power. I was just curious what would happen if you powered it by USB or 9v battery. I found this tutorial which uses USB, however, I doubt it gets to its maximum coolness potential. Also, if I used a 9v, would that drain the battery in a matter of minutes, or even damage the plate?Thank you.

usb face plate

Does any one have a line on a usb face plate for the front of a computer? im looking for some thing that would replace one of the removeable slot covers on any computer. i have a car stereo that has usb hook up for flash drives but it looks ghetto with a usb cable hanging out from the dash. i only need 1 usb slot so i guess i could just cut a multi port on up....if i could find one. i checked rs, tigedirect, bestbu, circuit city, and a few build your own comp shops and cant find the usb plate i need. i have a cable with the female end on it and i guess i just need on of these plates to plug it into and flush mount it to my dash steve

Simple CNC question... Answered

This is probably really obvious, but I wanted to know if there is a better way.  I was thinking about how I would go about making a simple "mounting plate".  Then I realized that wouldn't I first have to cut it to size and then mill out the holes.  But then the since I had to cut out the plate it kind of takes the point out of the cnc, because I wouldn't be very accurate for the outside dimensions.  So is there a way to machine the outside, even though it would be in the cnc's vice? Thanks in Advance! AI

is it safe to turn a kettle into a hot plate for boiling solutions?

Hello, i recently realised that my kettle, which consists of just a a kettle shaped container with a hotplate down the bottom, quickly reaches tempuratures in excess of 100 degrees celcius, and so i have considerd getting a second hand one or a scrap one at the local dump shop, to use in my chlorate cell, to periodically boil the solution once per hour to destroy the hypochlorite and re-absorb the chlorine gas which would normally be lost. i intend to remove the little hot plate! i also want to use it, along with some kind of speed controller, or lamp ambience controller or whatever they are called (lamp dimmer), to make a variable tampurature hot plate, using a heat dependant autoresetting circuit breaker to ensure the temp doesnt go above what i want it at. what i need to know, is  it safe, not for me, but for the kettle, to operate for short periods of time without turning off? or would the resistance coil burn out? by that i mean 5 -7 minutes, considering its normal run time is at about 1-2 minutes. or can it safely run on indefinately, with the only damages occuring being melting of wires and the base?

Simple revolving floor plate for a human to stand on and... rotate like a microwave plate? Answered

I'm making a short film where I will be wearing some machines I have designed and I really wanted to get a shot of myself rotating 360 degrees whilst the camera is static on a tripod. I'm trying to think of something that would be, I hope effortlessly simple to bash together, can be turned either by hand (out of shot) or on a piece of string? I've worked at auto shows in the past and seen just how complex they can be when done rite... I was thinking a bicycle crank and chain setup but even that is too complex for such a small shot? Ideas appreciated... James :-)

Thermal conductivity of two welded plates?

I am in the process of building a wood stove (details on FE Blog) mainly from scrap metal, but I have got it into my head that a stainless steel hotplate would be nice. I wanted one 10mm thick, round with a diameter of 390mm. As it turns out 6mm seems to be a bit of a threshold for stainless, and anything over has to be laser cut or similar and is loads more expensive. Like £80 is the cheapest I can find it.  Anyway, one solution would be to buy two 5mm thick plates and weld round the circumference - that seems like it would work out quite a lot cheaper. The question is how would the thermal conductivity be affected by the tiny gaps which would inevitably remain in the centre (the two plates will never be completely flat)? Is there some kind of thermal paste that could mitigate this, which is very heat resistant? If so how would it deal with being superheated by the welding, and would it contaminate the weld? And lastly - this got me to thinking about copper bottomed pans - how do they bond the copper to the stainless steel (google is failing me- or I am failing google with poor search terms)?? So 3 sort of related questions: 1.Welded plate- big conductivity problem or naught to worry bout? 2.Super high temp. thermal past  - would it help? 3.How are pans copper bottomed anyway?? Thanks, Bongo

How to make a cam plate for a mechanical iris? Answered

Hi there. I'm making a steampunk watch with a mechanical iris as the cover, inspired by gogglerman's "timeye". I was wondering how you would make a cam plate for the iris, I have spoken to him and he has said that it is made of a brass sheet 6mm thick and he used an angle grinder. I was wondering if it is even possible to make one using handheld tools? I live on a small island where there ar'nt many hardware stores, let alone with the right tools, and i'm probably not even going to buy them anyway. So any ideas on how to make a cam plate?

Why have neutral plates in an hydroxy generator? Answered

Hi all, I've been wanting to build a simple hydroxy generator for using it as a torch.  I've seen about 500 gazillion tutorials and alot of them talk abour having 3-5 neutral plates between each positive and negative plate. What is the point of this?  Isn't it better to have all plates connected as electrodes? Also, what's the difference between having 5 neutral plates between positive and negative plate, and just having the positive and negative plates installed farther apart (same distance as if you had the neutrals between them)? Thanks!

High quality and safe nickel plating question? Answered

Hi. There is instruction on this address https://www.instructables.com/id/High-Quality-and-safe-Nickel-Plating/ how to make high quality and safe nickel plating, and i have some question about that. When he showed to add salt to the vinegar in order to make the vinegar  more conductive, isnt the salt become Na and Cl ions? Will the Na positive ion stick to the negative nickel plate?(while making the nickel solution-step 3)? Will the Na positive ions stick to the item that we are plating besides the nickel( in the plating process-step 5)? will it spoil the object that we are plating with nickel? I see in the supermarket vinegar which said"synthetic vinegar" 5% acetic acid, water.(for food). Is it ok? when he said(step 4)"You can further clean your object by reverse electroplating (ie "electrocleaning") it for a few seconds.  Hook your object up to a negative voltage, a WIRE to the positive voltage, and drop them both in a vinegar salt solution for 10-30 seconds.  This will remove any left over oxidation" What wire did he mean? and the last one:how pure is the nickel should be?because i notice that most of the nickel sheet are about 99%-99.7% purity.is it ok? can i use pure nickel strip(97% pure nickel)that is used for battery welding? Thanks in advance.

Can anyone teach me how to make a remote control plate flipper for my license/vehicle registration plate for a car show?

I have a car contest coming up in Indonesia and we have a choice to remove our plates to protect our identities on the streets from show visitors. It usually takes a small amount of effort to remove the plate screws and fix on the contest user name but I thought it would be nice to have it automatically change when I enter the show (might help me gain more points :D) I have tried to search for this item online but some only supply the item to Russia and the rest of the sellers are in China. They cost around 290 dollars for a set, which I thought was quite pricy. To be quite honest in that 290 dollars I was going to spend, I doubted that the China factory would use the best quality materials considering the price. So I was wondering if anyone could help me make one of these automatic revolving plate frames with remote control operation for the auto show? It would be really great as it would help me gain more points! These are the links of the Russian company and Chinese company that produces it: 1. http://www.plate-flipper.com/       They have videos (Russia) 2. http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/AUTOMATIC-Automatic-Flip-license-plate-revolving-license-plate-frame-free-shipping/101548_517916045.html               They don't have videos (China) Thank you all for you help!!!

I posted a picture showing the two plates that form the connection I am talking about.

Magnetic Levetation? A Magnet Levitating between two Bismuth plates?

I am trying to make a magnet levitate between two bismuth plates that i made (picture 3,4,5 and 6). As you can see they are round discs about 7mm (millimeters) thick and 110 mm or 11cm (centimeters) in diameter. I bought two magnets; -the one I am trying to make levitate is 30mm (millimeters) in diameter, 10mm thick, and 22kg (kilograms) strong... -the other that is on top, the one that is pulling the magnet up is 30mm in diameter, 15mm thick and 23kg strong I put my two plates of bismuth so that there is about 25mm of space between them... Than I put in the 30mm x 10mm magnet that I want to levitate inside. The other magnet is located above the setup. I very slowly, ever so carefully start to lower the magnet. The magnet between the two bismuth plates starts to shake and at one point hits the top bismuth plate. I can't make it to levitate, either it is on the bottom plate or on the top. I tried to make the space between two bismuth plates smaller and larger, to lower the magnet by a very small amount...it didn't help... PROBLEM: I can't make it levitate, either it is on the bottom bismuth plate or on the top... WHY IS THIS? HOW CAN I FIX IT AND MAKE IT LEVITATE? Thank you for your help! -Stanislav A.K.A. Comodore

How do I drive a Peltier Cooling Plate with USB power? Answered

I just ordered some of these 20mm x 20mm Peltier Cooling Plates and would like to power them with a USB hub. I think I could drive them at 3.5V and still be okay, Not sure if I need a voltage regulator or if just resistors would do the trick. Thank you Kurt

Copperplating with non-pure-copper?

Hi! I plan on some experiments with a modified method i saw here for PCB-plating with copper to make the holes conductive. Now the question: What if my metal is not 100% pure but has some impurities in it? Does it still only "transfer" the copper and leaves the impurities as slag behind? I think it should be this way, since a similar approach gets used in refining metals to a very high purity; but i am unsure... Lets say i do: Follow the basic recipe (with smaller ammounts!) @ http://www.thinktink.com/stack/volumes/voliii/consumbl/cplatmix.htm and use copper sulfide. I think the trick now is that only copper-ions get disolved in the copper sulfide and nothing else. Those ions become plated to the other pole and thus i get purest copper plated to it?

Space Heater Repair, is there a glue for broken heating element coil spacer that is inflammable? Answered

Usually a space heater consists of a fan mounted to a motor which is then mounted to a back plate. Connected to the back plate are reflective spacers that hold the heating element coils seperate from eachother so they don't spark. Recently, I figured I'd repair my space heater after it started sparking instead of going and buying a new one. I opened it up to find the spacer plate which has several arms for holding 1-5 coiled wires. One of the arms was broken and the coils touched which is why it was sparking. Seeing as this is a heater, i'm fairly certain I can't use a super glue or epoxy to fix the plate due to its flammable nature. The plates are not easily replaceable themselves as they've been spot welded into place. So the question, is there a type of glue which will hold up under high temperatures which is not flammable that will bond metal / plastic / ceramic. I'd estimate the heating element probably reaches no higher then 700 degrees. If you have any suggestions on how I would go about repairing this I'd love to hear your ideas. Thanks in advance.

Creative stompbox lighting ideas?

Im looking for cool and creative ways to use leds to light a stompbox. i found something cool on diystompboxes.com called a lightplate, which is sandwiched between the pedal and bottom plate,  you drill holes in the middle for leds it gives the pedal an underglow when its turned on. u can buy them from diystompoxes.com, but only for hammond enclosures, but its basically just a piece of plexiglass, so it would be easy to make. im just looking for any cool original ideas you have, or ways you could make the light plate even cooler.

EMT 140 plate reverb transducer & pickups. I want to build studio quality components.

Hello group. I am entertaining a spring project for duplicating the famous German made EMT 140 plate reverb units used at recording studios like Abbey Road. The construction of the plate, supports, box, welding and such is really not a problem for me personally. Even the pickups I don't think are a huge problem as there are many out there ready made and it's probably easier to make a high quality pickup than a high quality transducer. I would however like to build my own transducer but don't know exactly where to start. I don't want to go the piezo route that I see out there as I think that is not going to end up being anywhere near usable in a studio. I'm not opposed to converting a hacked up speaker or something that doesn't look pretty as long as it works. The typical plate reverb build (the main structure and plate) I believe is with a steel plate about 1 meter wide by 2 meters long suspended within another steel frame and tuned (tension even on all 4 corners). Also, there is a damper that you need to build to lengthen or shorten the delay. This general construction I don't see to be a roadblock but the transducer seems to be what I think may trip me up. I would just like to get something working before I dive in on several days of picking up heavy metal, welding and fabrication of the supporting structure and plate. Some things I would like to understand and advice on are: What type of transducer am I really trying to build here or what type of transducers do you think I should consider? Surface? Tactile? Bone? Can I use a regular speaker magnet? If so what is too big or too small for the plate? What gauge varnish coil wire do I use and how many winds for 8 ohm amp? What sort of material should I wind over? Should I just modify a speaker or driver? Are there any other quality units out there ready made to save me the pain of building this transducer from scratch? I do have a Dayton Audio HDN-8 on order to start experimenting but would like to get something better I think. Building a pickup seems to be infinitely easier since I already know how to build guitar pickups and also there are a huge selection of pickups for things like acoustic and mandolin etc. so that I assume is the easy part of the electronics. Still if there are any design ideas you know that would be studio quality I would like to hear from you. My main focus is the heart of the system and the transducer. I have seen a few different methods converting a speaker by cutting out most of the speaker except for the center and then super glue to a metal rod that would touch the plate or whatever but I'm certain that there may be a more simple solution out there. Thanks in advance for any replies! Art
