Motors for Quadcopters

Hi, I am looking to make a quadcopter as my university project and I kinda run in to some problems deciding which motor I need to choose. I was thinking to choose brushless motors as they are more efficient and they give more RPM. HOwever, my professor says that there's no point using brushless/stepper motors as u can get the same RPMs using brushed motors and its the same thing. Hence, can anyone please guide me which motor is best to use and why should I use brushed or brushless motors. I shall be very glad if someone guide me through it. Thank you :)

Quadcopters on pcDuino

Fter researching auxiliary processors, we decided to use the pcDuino for controlling our drone. The choice was an obvious one because it was not only the lightest of the choices, but also one of the least expensive, and in addition was running Linux as well as providing a wireless card. On arrival we quickly connected it to a monitor, but the adapters we purchased did not work. So as result we shaved rubber off of one of the adapters so that it fit properly in the monitor to connect to the port.  We were able to gather some of the peripherals(USB hub, mouse, and keyboard) key from our computer department for the project. http://esdartemis.wordpress.com/2014/01/15/new-pcduino/

Making a Quadcopter, maybe

So I am new to electronics, and RC stuff, and robots too really. This hobby has really captivated my attention and I really want to get into it. I have been searching for a project and I think I finally found what it is I want to make. I would love to make a quad/ tri copter, and eventually make it autonomous, but that dosent have to happen yet. However I want to learn as much as I can along the way so that I can apply the knowledge to future projects. I have an arduino uno that I have been fiddling around with and thought I could use that as a starting point for my quadcopter. any additional circuits I would like to build on my own, at least to start with. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction to make this happen. If you have any smaller projects I should do first that would be great.

Guidance & Info about Quadcopter Project?

Hello everyone, I am working on a collision avoidance protocol for my masters thesis and need guidance and information especially from people who have done the same or similar project.The implementation is in two stages: 1. simulation (a) i want to construct a 6 dof quadcopter model in simulink (b) create the collision avoidance protocol with matlab and it will include: (i) ultrasonic range improvement protocol (ii) Kalman filter(for data fusion of ultrasonic and infrared sensor data) (b) I want to be able to integrate the collision algorithm created in matlab into the model created in simulink and test its functionality using simulink 3D animation. 2. Construction (a) i want to construct a quadcopter to validate all that has been done in the simulation. (b) I want it to be FPV type to record videos on flight. Please need your input as to how you think i should go about it from softwares, hardwares,simulation & construction etc.

Question about flight controller for Quadcopter

Hey lads, After research I found that most of Quadcopter Projects use Multiwii as a flight controller. I would like to ask some things. 1) Multiwii is used ONLY for RC control or you can control your Multicopter using a PC/Mobile through Wi/fi local network ? 2) Can you have Arduino Mini / Arduino nano work as a flight controller and work like Multiwii ? 3) Does multiwii have prospects of adding some random sensors on the board like cameras, sensors for object avoidance etc? Looking forward of your replies in order to conclude about what board I will use for the flight controller so i can start ordering the parts of hardware i need and start building my project. Cheers

Why my quadcopter is oscillating and crashing after taking off?

Hi guys, I am new to this multirotor domain. We are strugling with our first F450 quad. Below are the specs: 1. F450 quadcopter chassis 2. KK2.1 Flight controller. 3. FLYSKY CT6B --- 6 channel radio transmitter 4. 1400 KV Brushless motor 5. 30 amps ESC 6. Lipo battery Firstly the quad was not taking off properly. More over, after activating self level mode also, the quad is not at all stable. If we max up the throttle, then it flips in one side and crashes. Otherwise, it takes off from the ground upto 1-2 feet if we slowly increase the throttle and then oscillates and to avoid crash, we then decrease the throttle. Please see the video HERE for more reference. Please guys, really need your help in this matter. We are not able to understand exactly what is wrong with our quad. We have already calibrated our ESC's and the Accelarometer but no luck. Please help guys.

FPV Quad-copter Build?

I want to build a Quadcopter with some specifications: -GoPro Hero3 Mount -Additional wireless onboard FPV camera -About a 2 mile range -GPS to return to certain location  -30 minute battery life My budget would be around $200-500 Is this build possible? How do I correct the problem of my sk450 deadcat quad flipping forward?

Tried all the recommended settings to compensate for pitch and roll as I understand it. Take it of with aileron and elevator in neutral position and the copter topples forward before it leaves the ground. What Should I be changing to settle things down.

Motor/propeller selection for quadcopter

Hello Instructables! We are a team of engineering students that want to get started in the world of multirotors. Our objective is to build a long endurance/high payload quadcopter for industrial applications, and we plan to innovate in the power system area. So, without further ado here's our first problem. I've searched the internet for a while now and I've struggled to find information on how to choose an appropiate motor-propeller combination. I know the total maximun thrust should be a bit more than two times the the total weight but motor and propeller manufacturers rarely list the "thrust per rpm" of their props. Our initial estimation for the quadcopter's total weight is 3,3 kg. considering 200 g for each motor. I did manage to find this static thrust calculator but I have no idea how reliable it is since it doesn't say how the thrust is calculated. (http://personal.osi.hu/fuzesisz/strc_eng/index.htm) So that's about it. Any help would be greatly apreciated, no matter how small. It can be advice, information sources, or even builds that are similar to what we want to make and have already been tested. Thank you very much for your time! quadcopter with kk board and arduino?

We are using a kk board 2.1.5 to control the  quad copter  and it works just fine.Well now we want to move a bit further and start making our own self stabilization algorithms based on slam algorithms . I want the public's opinion on using both the KK board (to auto stabilize ,don't want to mess around the PID  )  and adding a arduino duo in between the KK board and the receiver . So basically the idea is that the receiver signals are going to be altered using some mathematical functions to add features such as obstacle detection and avoidance  . My friend was rasing some doubts regarding this  as the signal input and pwm output might not be in sync Thanks in advance

Quadcopter wont lift off? Answered

I have made a quadcopter. However, it wont lift off :( I really need help with that. The motors run on full power, however I am not sure why I can not generate a lift :/ I really need to make it work as this is my final year project. PLeaseeee someone help me :(

Heavy aerial lift quadcopter?

Hi, I am in a local competition where they are asking for a quadcopter that can lift a box of lead. The box weigh's 25kg. Yes, you read that right 25 kg. The rules state that it must be a quadcopter and it must fit in a meter by meter by meter cube. This limits the prop size to 500mm diameter unless the height of the blades is different so they overlap. I would prefer not to do this. each rotor must lift 7000 grams (payload + weight of quad). I have been using this thrust calculator : http://personal.osi.hu/fuzesisz/strc_eng/ and according to it a 500mm (20") at 4.5" pitch (I just put that as standard) will need to spin at 6000 RPM to produce 7.12 kg of thrust. It also says it will need an 800 Watt motor. I plan on using these motors http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__24433__NTM_Rotor_Drive_450_Series_1700KV_930W.html. They are 930 watts and 1700kv. they run on a 6s lipo. A 6s lipo is 22.2 volts. 22.2 X 1700 = 37,740. 37,740 RPM is the theoretical speed of the motor. I only need 6000 RPM. 37,740 / 6000 = about 6. so the motor has an 8 tooth gear on it and the prop has a 42 tooth gear on it. This makes a roughly 6:1 ratio to slow down and power up the rotor. The motor is 30A constant current, 42A burst. Quadcopter without expensive ESC?

Well I am new to quadcopters so please forgive me if I am wrong. Well I am set about to build a quadcopter and was doing a bit of research on the internet and most of them were telling me to get ESC for controlling the speed of the motor. I want to know if I can substitute it with something cheaper which basically varies the output using pwm input from the microcontroller(something like opamp) Another question is about motors ,is it a must that I should get brush less motors We'll I have two options Brush less 1500Kv motor for about 30$ each Normal 24000rpm 12v motor for 6$ each So which one is better and if brushless why so. Apart from that how much would a completely finished quadcopter wiegh (approx weight)

Simple Quadcopter using Arduino Uno?

Hello guys I am making a quadcopter using Arduino uno. My first simple aim is to lift and hover the quadcopter.  To achieve this aim  I have connected the signal Wire of all the ESC's to arduino Pin 9 and giving throttle via node server using bluetooth module and johnny five library.  My quadcopter lifts from 2 sides (flips) and sometimes little bit from 3rd side also.  Can anyone suggest me anything ? The thing which I am doing giving equal throttle to all motor, Is it right ? or  should I give more throttle to clockwise and little less throttle to counter clock wise motors. I will be very thankful, if you guys help me to lift my quadcopter

Why is my quadcopter toppling when i try to fly it?

I built a quad copter. I have done all the calibrations correctly (accel, compass, rc, esc). When I arm the drone, motors and propellers are spinning. But when i give more throttle to try to hover it, it doesnt fly upward steadily. Instead it lifts backwards and falls. Why is this happening? Should I change some PID setting?

Micro drone construction help

For a school project a partner and I are attempting to build a self controlling quadcopter. It should be able to use a specific input from a photo transistor and the be able to navigate on its own. The only problems that I can see running into at the moment are finding an atmega compatible rotor controller, and that not including the propellers it is going to be under two inches (5.08 cm). I would appreciate any assistance possible in finding a motor controller of this size, and will keep this post up to date with our project.

Can I control the height of quadcopter using MPU 6050?

Is there a way that I can control the height of the quadcopeter using the MPU 6050? I know that the accelerometer and the gyroscope are used to measure the angular acceleration and the orientations respectively and stabilise the flight. But how would you measure the height of the quadcopter?

I have made a quadcopter using ESCs, brushless motors, Arduino UNO, MPU6050 and a battery. Now I want to design its schematics. But I dnt know which software to use to do that. I have tried to use fritzing, but its doeenst give me any components for brushless motors or ESCs. So can anyone suggest me a good software used to make schematics for quadcopter?

Micro quadcopter circuit board as flight controller and receiver?

I have a little airhogs quadcopter. A motor had died in it, so it doesn't fly anymore. I kinda got the idea to connect ESCs to the motor output of the quad's circuit board. Would those motor outputs be able to drive the PWM input of the ESC, allowing the board to basically drive larger motors?

I know how to calibrate ESCs on the quad-copter. Howver, I dnt understand the concept of calibration. What is meant by ESC callibrarion? what happens when we calibrate the ESCs? is it so they move synchronously or so the PWM signal reaches each ESC at the same time?

Hi, I would like to make an Arduino- based drone, but don't know where to start.  I would like it to be a quadrotor, but still have the ability to carry out automated tasks, and have a long-range (1-2 miles) communication system that I can control from my PC.  I can program Arduino, and C# proficiently any help?  Thanks.

Do I need to write programme for multiwii nanowii?

Its probably a dumb question but I was just curious. I received my multiwii nanowii module today and I was going through some multiwii codes. I found out the multiwiiconfig.h code and the gui for that. And apparantly it gives you pitch, roll and yaw and everything that you need. Now my question is; if you just use that piece of code, is there any need to write a seperate code for simple balancing? Like I just want to achieve some simple quad-copter balancing. So do I need to create some PID code for that? or if I just use the multiwiiconfig.h, I can achieve the stabilty?

Making a measure device to fit on quadcopter

Hi i wish to make a measuring device and placing it on a quadcopter soi can measure at hights that are difficult to reach, but I don't wish to use a  bouncing signal, but use like a pen with sensor in it which can be brought down onto a flat surface to mark the start of a measurement and then moved to new location and do the same, what electrical equipment do I need to do such a thing.

Guidance & Info about Quadcopter Project?

Greetings lads, I'm new in forum and since I made some research the past days I'd like to get some guidance about constructing & programming a Quadcopter from scratch since I'm completely new on a project like that. Quadcopter Frame: Thinking about to construct an aluminum 70cm diameter frame which will weight around 500g. What kind of motors should I get in order the frame with the board,motors etc. will be able to lift? Board: I'm thinking to use Arduino Uno or Raspberry Pi 2.0 ( With a little bit of research I made I conclude that Raspberry could make my life a little bit easier since you can add wifi on it. The quadcopter will be controlled via a pc/laptop through wifi). What can you suggest and why? ESC: As far as I've seen in most of similar projects people using ESCs in order to control the motors throttle. Can you avoid that, with programming PIDs that make the same job in order not to use more hardware? About PIDs and Code in General: Thinking about to simulate the whole project in Simulik, Matlab and somehow (if it's possible) to convert the Matlab Code into C++ and download it on the chip. What do you think about that? About the whole project: I'm trying to minmize the hardware as much as it's possible (use only 4x motors, the board with the chip on it, cables and probably some sensors) in order to minimize the total weight of construction and ofc the price. is there a way to communicate with the quadcopter using a xBee module that is operated by an iPhone?

I am trying to make a quadcopter. I want it to be controlled by an iPhone rather than an RC radio transmitter. One way I found was to use a xBee module that can take the wireless signal and then you can control it. However, I cant figure out how would I be sending the signals to the xBee. Like do I need 2 xBees? one to transmit and one to receive? I shall be very thankful for any help :)

Rc car out of ps3 controller+quadcopter???

Hi im just wondering if it's possible to build a working rc car using parts from ps3 controler and quadcopter such as ESC ,battery ,  2 motors in controller to power 2 wheels... ( This is just to see if i can find any use of those two things that i dont use , not trying to create a really good rc car , just checking if it is possible) The two motors would both have to spin at different speeds to make the rc car turn.

Quadcopter using 12V battery and Wood Screwers

I’m currently attempting to rebuild the quadcopter demonstrated in the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa_x93JQhNM The materials I have are as follows: • SMAKN Buck and Boost Voltage Converter • 20 AWG Flexible 1007 Wire Electric wire 20-Gauge Copper Hook Up Wire • 2300KV 2204 Brushless Motor CW&CCW; • 12V 7 Amp EXP1270 Rechargeable Lead Acid Battery • Carbon Fiber Propeller • Digital Multimeter Attempt 1: We connected a motor to the 12V battery using clamped wire connects – there was a lot of sparking and the motor did not spin. Attempt 2: We connected 2 motors in series – connected the motors and the 12V battery to the buck boost convertor – which resulted in the battery smoking and the buck boost convertor burning out. Can you watch the video and explain to me the wiring aspect to the quadcopter - I believe I may be missing necessary wires such as a female insulated connector that connects to a terminal wire which connects to the 4 motors in series but I’m not sure.

How can I use the flight control board?

I am making a quadcopter and I am in some confusion. I am planing to get a KKv3 Flight Control Board from Hobby King. The question is, if I get the board then what is the need of getting a seperate IMU6050 as I have seen in some projects that people have used the 6050 sensor along with the Flight Control Board. Is it necessary to use that? As the flight control already have sensors on them. Also, does the flight control board gets connected to the arduino? and if so then how?

Quadcopter build help? multiwii is causing motors to twitch when throttle is applied

I have been working on a large X525 quadcopter kit/ w/ multiwii SE v2.5 from amazon, and have had success with configuring the multiwii for the quadX configuration, however, when I arm it and try to take off, all 4 motors ramp up to speed but then cut out and continue ramping up, particularly one motor, whichever is the lowest. Balancing the quad on 2 legs, the quad seems to want to stabilize, but keeps tetering violently since the motors keep randomly cutting out. I have tried to calibrate the ESCs by connecting them individually directly to the CH3 (throttle) receiver, powering up the Tx with the throttle high,plugging in the LiPo battery, and after hearing the jingle, lowering the throttle back down to the lowest position and waiting for the first few beeps before I unplug the LiPo battery and moving on the the next ESC. I was looking at the multiwii outputs through the software and they were in fact jumping around like crazy but after taking the props off the amount of twitching did go down a little, but still about 10-20% deviation in the bars of the software readouts. I've also tried dismounting the multiwii from the quad to eliminate the possibility of vibration from the motors from causing the multiwii to attempt corrections to the motor. though it seems to have the same for as long as I could tell because by the time I tested this, the multiwii board touched the power distribution board causing magical smoke to be released. Oops! Now the multiwii is completely dead all but the green power light which is directly connected to power Vin. The board and all the chips appear completely fine with no damage, and there is voltage to the main ATmega328, I don't know if I should try desoldering the ATmega and buying a replacement, or suck it up and buy a new $30 board. For all I can tell, I do not see how other sensors could have failed since the the exposed through-hole headers that likely touched the distribution board are directly connected to the multiwii's analog/digital input/output pins, I suspect that is all that went bad is the ATmega chip, even though if shows no sign of burning and does not overheat with power applied. Anyway while I wait, I thought I will ask about this problem to see if it is something simple like sensors calibration. (w/o motors operating, the output appears as it should!!!)

Where to connect the Syma x11C camera box?

So i have a bunch of spare parts that i've obtained from working at an rc shop. In this is the receiver board and camera box of a Syma x11C quadcopter. They were connected at one point, but i remember a friend destroying it on accident a while back, so i know these were the same parts. I am just curious as to where to connect the camera box to the receiver board (the camera box still has red,black,yellow wires attached to +,gnd,DV respectively.)  Is it possibly to the DATA,GND,VCC on the front right of the receiver board?

How could I connect an FPV camera to an SD card before transmission to a display?

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to RC and I'm now looking at getting some FPV gear (camera - HS1177, transmitter - ImmersionRC 25mW 5.8GHz, receiver and display). I'd also really like to record my flights which would usually mean having a second camera on board (but I don't have the space) or recording the transmitted video (but transmission can introduce noise) so I would like to put an SD card in parallel to the transmitter. I imagine that if it is possible it's more complicated than what I've drawn but I was hoping for something along those lines. Thanks in advance for any help that you could give me :)

FAA Ruling ends FPV and will destroy RC Model Aircraft industry is USA

Hello, This is a serious matter. Please read and act. Deadline is July 25. Please see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYs815t4knQ Then please go to this website and read  the document "Interpretation of the Special Rule for Model Aircraft". http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=FAA-2014-0396 To summarize, the FAA has deemed that a sweeping, blanket regulation is necessary to take care of an issue created by a few dumb individuals making bad decisions. Because a very, very small few people who never touched a RC model aircraft before buy a DJI Phantom and decide to fly it over crowded city streets crashing into buildings and and almost hurting people, the larger hobby community is now paying the penalty of those dumb people. Why it matters to me: I just got into the hobby and I am not flying FPV yet. Actually I cannot fly FPV until I get my FCC Ham License. I am following the rules. I do NOT fly over people, cars, streets, buildings. I do not fly over private property other than my own. I DO fly within line of site of my aircraft, under 400 ft, in open fields or isolated locations. I do keep my aircraft in good working order. I am an AMA member, have insurance in case of RC accidents, have my AMA number inscribed on my model. So I do everything within regulations. Most RC modelers and AMA members do. But we all pay the price because some bonehead goes to amazon and buys a ready built aircraft and on the first flight takes it to a crowded school playground and crashes it on someone's car. I want to grow into this hobby and advance to FPV. I do it legally, responsibly, and safely. I use this hobby to freely express myself in a safe, harmless way. this hobby is enjoyable, challenging and has forced me to be innovative. I actually invented something that I want to share in instructables one day. Why it should matter to you: The government is slowly eroding away our rights. This regulation criminalizes a hobby that has been enjoyed by generations. Done responsibly, the hobby is safe, enjoyable, promotes innovation and gives people a way to express themselves. It is also an industry that many people rely on to make a living. The FAA as a government agency, is overstepping their authority and threatening our freedom to conduct ourselves are citizens in a safe manner. under this ruling, a RC model operator does something innovative (it does not have to be FPV related) shares it on instructables, and wins a prize from one of the many GREAT contest in intructables... Guess what, that instructables member is NOW a CRIMINAL. You are not allowed to get any compensation for RC Model hobby. under this ruling, you cannot fly FPV in an isolated forest capturing wonderful video and posting that video on the internet as an expression of your creativity. That my friends is Freedom of Expression being undermined. That video is now incriminating evidence that you broke the law. Even though that video harms no one. Under this ruling, an individual who invents a new RC airplane, mass produces it and sells it to others is a criminal because RC models is only for amateur hobby. Any monetary gain is criminal. So it is criminal for someone to innovate and try to make a living from that innovation. Do not let the government overstep their authority over us citizens. I ask that you respectfully tell the FAA to consider reversing their ruling. Ask them to go not take the easy route of making a over-generalized, sweeping, blanket regulation that impacts everyone in the hobby, past, present and future. instead, have them create regulation that target the the unsafe operators who make poor choices. thank you.

Adding solar panel to quadcopter to extend flight time?

I know I will not be able to completely rely on solar power to power the blades of my quadcopter but I would like to extend the flight time as much as possible.  I was looking at this url and started getting interested in trying to create a small panel array on the arms of my quadcopter to help replace some of the power in the battery (trickle) while using the battery for flight.  Doug Paradis had some helpful insight to the OP's question but some of it went over my head.  That's what lead me to ask my own question to make sure I'm talking about quadcopters instead. So currently I have a light weight POS starter quadcopter that has the following battery being used... - FB752540 - 136 Li-Po - 500mAh 3.7v - 4K07 1.9Wh I have some internal space to mount small items but I would try to keep the weight down as much as possible.  I was hoping to start my own DIY project to learn more about solar power and the entire process. I'm guessing I would need at least one solar panel (small), something to convert the power, and some type of regulator to trickle the power into the battery.  Any ideas as to how I would do this? Connect ESCs with RC receiver?

I am trying to connect 4 ESCs with a FlySku 6 Channel Receiver. I managed to connect all four of them to the throttle channel and it works fine. However, is it possible to connect them to other channels wiht them being plugged in the throttle channel at the same time? I am making a quad-copter and I am not sure what channels to use? like I know that we need the throttle channel to change the throttle and the motor speed. but like to change the pitch, roll and yaw, we need the other channels too right? So can anyone please guide me through it? I am using a flycky CT6B transmitter and a 6 channel receiver.
