Amateur Radio?

I am going to be taking an amateur radio course early next year (foundation level). I have been doing a little research into the subject and I am baffled by the terminology / acronyms.  I'm sure I'll learn all that when the time comes.  At the moment I am interested in cheap kits / second-hand gear and instructions on how to make a small, portable aerial for 2m (144MHz) operation for www.sota.org.uk. Any other information is gladly accepted. What is CQ, SSB, CW, QSL? etc.

Radio Mod?

I would like to mod a handheld radio (or even a analogue tv but radio would be better) to get to listen to higher frequencies than normally available. I'd Like to hit the 1420Mhz mark approximately but with little electrical engineering or architecture experience, I'm not certain how? Which might make a TV easier to get there as UHF covers that right? (still safer to play with a battery powered radio than a 240V powered one) I figured there is someone out there with the ability to figure out what components need changing? The variable resistor that tunes it perhaps? If you'd rather post an instructable I'll follow that or just tell me what needs replacing with what? Any Ideas?? Thanks

Amateur Radio (AKA "Ham Radio")

I have scoured the internet in search of directions, how to guides, or schematics for an amateur radio (ham radio). However, I can't find anything of the sort. All I can find is pages of "hams" showing off their equipment or pages linking to the same thing. Does anybody have a good simple schematic for a ham radio receiver or transmitter. If not, does anybody know where I can find one?

DELAY MY RADIO!

I love baseball.  I want to watch the World Series on TV, but I don't want to listen to the TV announcers.  I want to listen to the radio broadcast instead.*  Problem is, the "live" TV arrives 1-2 seconds after the radio.  Which means I hear about the deep flyball to left before I see it. And that takes the fun out of watching the game. So, I'm wondering if I can add an adjustable delay to the sound from my radio, to sync up with the picture.  I can sacrifice a boom box or other radio for this if nec. Or some other solution? (I can record both and sync 'em up later using video editing software, but that's not practical). * for baseball fans:  it's the choice between the Buck/McCarver team (perfectly boring & perfectly obnoxious) and Jon Miller/Joe Morgan radio team (passionate and fun).

Making a small radio??

Hey guys, I work for a radio station that has the idea of recycling old personal walkmen and connecting them to old hi fi speakers and containing them in a small box and strategically placing them around the city center, at bus stops etc. I was wondering if anyone would know how to do this, especially at a low cost (preferably with old parts) and without needing an amp? is this possible? Thanks, Tony :)

Is there a remote for a stock radio?

I have a 2012 Kia Soul, base model, with the factory installed radio.  I also have two children who always 'need' the radio station changed.  Does any one know if you can purchase, if so where, a remote the radio?  I am a single mother so don't want to get involved with replacing the radio just to have a remote.  I was just hoping that there would be an easy out for me, lol.  Thank you

FM radio antennas

Are there any ideas out there for building an FM antenna booster that can be used with the usual whip antenna that comes built into most radios these days. Most of the radios are made in such a way that it is difficult to get at the internal wiring, so the booster would have to be an external unit.

Xbee radio control?

I've been thinking about making a FPV RC (first person view) plane and I was wondering about using Xbee and Ardunio. I was thinking have an Arduino on the ground and another one in the plane each one with an Xbee. I want to have joysticks, buttons and switches on the ground to control at least 4 servos, one or two ESC's and possibly other things (like LED's and retractable landing gear) in the plane and also have a camera and some sensors (altitude, battery level, ECT) in the plane sending video and data back to earth where it can be displayed. I am quite new to electronics and I just want to know if what I said is possible, if there is an easier/cheaper way, how one might go about doing it and if that's even how you use an Xbee. Thanks for any help, it will be greatly appreciated

Turning AM/FM clock radio into just a radio?

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and couldn't quite find the answer to my question.  I have a cheapo AM/FM clock radio and thought it would be a fun Sunday afternoon project to turn it into just a radio.  I don't need the clock/alarm function anymore (I use my phone) and my dog likes to have some noise around when I'm not home (TV is an option, but I hate leaving the screen on all day).  Currently, the radio only turns on when the clock is triggered by the set alarm time...and it only plays for a max of 60 minutes.   Should be easy, right?  I opened the clock and couldn't quite figure out what I'm looking at...

Credit card crystal radio

What do you think about the feasibility of a credit card sized crystal radio? (Fits inside a wallet) Some possible i though so far are... A simple pcb with a diode, and a capacitor and a coil wrapped(protected by duct tape) around it. The antenna has to be tied to a hole on a corner. Or it is coiled to the card, ready to be unwrapped. The ear piece can either be external... Or can be glued to the card itself, but you must put the card near you ear... Instead of a winded coil, maybe it can be part of the pcb design itself... and to tune it, you unhook a beady wire and place it in the holes placed in a interval. What do you think? Any more ideas? In fact. a competition can be made for this idea.

Crystal radio help anyone?

(If you want the blow-by-blow of my questions, skip the following gigantic piece of text and proceed to the 2nd list after the first)   I was reconsidering making a crystal radio the past week and so I set out to research the topic on the 2nd most popular information database on the internet which comes out of the 1st most popular one. According to wikipedia, all you need is one diode in order to split the AC signal coming in via the antenna in half, therefore it uses half-wave rectification (it's not quoted; it's what I understand from it). Could full-wave rectification be also used? Like connecting the antenna to a bridge rectifier (aka. diode bridge, aka. 4 diodes stuck together)? I know that half-wave rectification yields pulsed DC, but I also don't understand how. By that I mean what happens to the other half? Does the other half of the wave connect directly to the output? One last thing, I know the largest metallic object I can ever use as an antenna is basically just my roof, but then I don't like coming up to the roof and looking for some exposed metal to connect to. Any thoughts on what huge, metallic items I can use in my household? I've already thought up a list of what I could use for an antenna: -Window screens -Extremely long piece of wire (I have an 8 meter long CAT5 cable going from the 1st to the 2nd floor) -My front gate -Sheet metal laying outside my front door (not the gate) Here is the summary of all my questions: -Is this wikipedia article true? (see at the list "semiconductor" area) -Can full-wave rectification be used on such radios? -In the case of half-wave rectification, where does the other half of the signal go? -What can I use as an antenna (excluding my roof)? Aside from the asked questions: -Is there any other way to tune to a particular frequency? -I'm asking opinions to people who know what they're doing (no offense to beehard44, this is more of a poll that anything else).

Bluetooth vs Radio Frequency Answered

This is a 3 part question: 1. I am a bit confused. Radio frequency covers 3KHz to 300GHz, so it basically includes bluetooth(2.4 GHz). Why is it that some people talk about bluetooth as something not relating to RF. Do they have different transmission methods? WIFI is also @ 2.4GHZ. What is the distinction between WIFI and bluetooth that makes them so different, covering different ranges, and being able to send different amounts of data at different speeds. I always thought it was the frequency of the wave but WIFI and bluetooth are the same yet they are so different.  2. I am building a project. I need to send data wirelessly. The data is very simple just to turn on or off a series of leds. A friend of mine told me to use radio waves. What does he mean by that exactly since radio range is huge. Is he talking about 40MHz like the RC cars? 3.Bluetooth or RF(again im assuming this to be the same one as RC cars since i will break apart an RC car to remove the transmitter/receiver)Which method consumes less power to send the same amount of data. Distance will not be over 10 meters so i'm not worried about that.  Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated! Chris
