Starting robotics?

For a while, I have been wanting to get started with robotics.  My interest in this is very deep, and as you can see from my about me section, my ultimate goal in life is to create a sentient robot. I know this isn't an easy field, and I was wondering if anybody had any tips for getting started.  Also, is there a link to a C compiler (preferably free) that you know of? Thank you very much for any help.

learning robot

Hey guys. friend and i are working on a project. we are trying to build a robot that will basically be able to follow a path. if there are obstacles in front it will go around them and then continue to the finishing point. no we also want it to learn about its surrounding. so if we bring the robot back to its starting point it will be able to get to the finish with out bumping into objects.we are planing to adopt this robot here https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-wall-avoiding-Robot!/?ALLSTEPSwhat do u guys think is it possible and if so how.the robot will learn by creating a grid in its memory using multi-dimensional arrays.

Robotic Snakes on a...

Pretty soon the TSA will have a new threat to deal with...Robotic Snakes On A Plane! They can climb up walls, stairs, go snooping for people, get through a chainlinked fence, they're pretty much unstoppable. But most impressively is the snake from Hirose Labs in Japan, it's pictured below, and that mofo can actually swim. It's beautiful, and amazing to watch this biologically inspired robot move, check it out: Clearly these robots are going to be very agile and useful, some researcher used his to walk the ring down the isle at his wedding... creepy? Yes. Awesome.... also yes. Let's see how many uses of robotic snakes you can come up with! Go:

Kids Robotics

I want to work with my daughter to build a fun robot but it seems like there are some many choices out there for platforms, controllers, software etc. I think I'm leaning towards a platform from DFrobot. http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path;=37_111&product;_id=97#.VaL4sZNVhBc And an Arduino based controller like this, http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path;=35_104&product;_id=1176#.VaL45pNVhBc To control and make it move I'm thinking that Ardublock could be a good choice. http://blog.ardublock.com/ I'm curious if this community has any thoughts on my choices... or alternative ideas. Thanks, Phil

Robotic Biomimicry

Reading up a bit, I came across www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/2577277.htm this, and thought I would like to try do something like that, but a spider. It's a "robo roach", a RObotic Autonomous Crawling Hexapod, or ROACH. Bio mimicry is starting to become a leading factor in robots for use in the field. Biomimicry itself is quite amazing the way it uses what works in nature to, well, work! Although there's something interesting about this cockroach, by the way it's made. It uses a simple bi-axial movement principal to keep things simple and cheap. They have a download link for the episode, just go to mpegmedia.abc.net.au/tv/geo/catalyst/catalyst_2009_ep14.wmv and zoom forward to 12:25 and watch it. I'd recommend it, it's quite interesting. Would any one have any information about this? I'd love to try make a robot that's based on an animal, preferably small, but there aren't many details any where. I'd like to hear your ideas about this biomimicry, what would you make and what would you use it for?

Brains for a robot?

It's time I turn yet again to the forums for advice, this time on recommended robot brains! [Serious] I have a project for a class requiring design, construction and programming of something. More than half of my fellow students are doing clocks of some sort, be they binary or nixie tube. A friend of mine is doing a holonomic robot, and my plan was to do a walking robot, based on ideas like the WowWee robosaurus, using a simple tail and head to balance and few motors to run it in comparison to any conventional biped. As far as servos, I was hoping to use something like the HerculeX or other serially connected servo, so I can just daisy chain the few I would need and simplify the wiring, as well as get experience with serially addressing things. Planned sensors are 2-4 IR rangefinders, 2-4 wire whiskers and one tilt switch to turn it off if it tips over. Sensors I'd love to add would be something like a super basic camera for simple machine vision if I ever learn to code that well, but I doubt that will be the case; and the LIDAR thing from the Neato XV-11 which is again unlikely. Things I was looking at for super basic use included: Arduino, HC11 MC (backplane type), BASIC Stamp, PIC. For a little more complexity I was seriously considering things like the Freescale Tower ARM, Gumstix or other. I'd love to have the serial servos, sensor assemblies and the camera and have integration with Robot operating system through an onboard computer, but I have no idea what to use to setup ROS or what would be best, or if my plan of parts to use is even good enough. In other words, what ideas should I throw out as impossible or what would I need for say, ROS use? Ideally i want to do a semi autonomous robot, so that i don't have to manually direct it everywhere, but I'd still be keeping an eye on it when it's running so it doesn't break something. If I understand ROS correctly I can use an external computer to control it, but I can also let it be autonomous? Coding math and logic in the machine language for a Z80 computer doesn't really prepare for robot building, although the class is basically a teach programming basics and throw you into the deep end. [/serious] Thank you in advance for your help!

Where is the robotics class??

I had let my Premium membership slip, but then I saw an offering for a series of classes on robotics.  That was interesting to me, so I renewed my Premium 2-year membership specifically for that class.  But now when I look into the class selections there is no mention of robotics at all and I can't navigate back to when I first saw the offering.  So, where is the robotics class? I'd hate to think that I bought 2 years premium membership and not get access to the main reason that I renewed.

Modular humioniod robotics? Answered

Hello my name is Alex, I have a very early stage idea for a modular humioniod robotic development platform. I'm looking for information, a point in the right direction to all things modular robotics. Books, threads, forums, drunken scribblings on a napkin I don't mind. What I would really like to do is a open source collaboration, where people can make either the whole thing or just indavidual modules. What do you think? Great idea? Dumb? Totally unachievable? All comments and replays welcome, positive or negative Thanks in advance Alex

Total robotics noob

I'm not sure if this is in the right section but I think this is the best place for it at the moment. So at the moment I'm still in the planning process but, I'm trying to get details worked out before I start work so all I have to do is start putting things together. I'm making this costume of one of my OCs for cons and costume contests. Anyways, the character's half robotic and I thought it'd be cool to make a few things interactive? Here's my character if you want to take a look at him -Okto. Sorry the image doesn't give a clear view and is pretty much toony. I haven't started drawing up the blue prints or his front and side view yet to where it'd actually be useful.  My thoughts are that the top section of his robotics on his head would have real moving gears. I was thinking about taking some watches apart to get the gears though the part I'm not sure about is making them move. I already have where I'd put the battery pack planned out but other than that I'm pretty much lost. What would be a good motor that you'd recommend? Also do you know of some good links to tutorials for programing? I've been struggling with it a bit and in addition to these bits I'm mentioning now I'm also thinking about giving him sound operated moving ears. My other part of my project functions on pretty much the same basic idea though I was also wondering about making the nob where it actually cranked. Maybe it could be used as the on and off switch for the gears or something. I'm not really sure about rigging it at all so any input would be appreciated. I'm trying to make the suit as genuine as possible as far as the steampunk aspects go for my Doctor Moreau style creature My last thing I'm trying to do that requires asking questions that's not in the picture is that the character has a binturong tail i.e. tail can work like an additional hand. I was wondering if it was possible I could rig it with servos where it could pick things up or hold things with the push of a button or something? Thanks for anything you can give me I greatly appreciate any help I can get.
