iPod crash question? Answered

Roger-X's iPod Touch appears to have crashed. He was watching a programme via the BBC iPlayer app and turned the iPod over 180°. The picture started to rotate as expected, got to about 45°, then froze for about 30 seconds. After that, the screen switched to a pale-white glowing screen with no image or text. It is not responding to the home button or the main power button, plugging it into our PC gets no response (the PC does not register its existence, either) and, of course, the local Apple store closed 10 minutes before it broke. Any ideas for a fix, folks?

Mobile Phones and Elevators

Ahem. Theoretically, an elevator is a perfect faraday cage -- no radio waves should be able to get into them. Mobile phones shouldn't work in them. But rogers says that their phones do work in them. So here's my question for you, instructables community: do rogers phones work in elevators? If so, why?The only theory that we could come up with was that each elevator has a little repeater in it, but that seems a bit costly.

Steampunk USB Memory

Meticulously crafted from hand-polished brass and copper, the USB drive reminds me of something out of the art deco neo-future of Buck Rogers - or perhaps more apropos - Flash Gordon. If you want to know how to make it yourself, learn to read russian and go HERE

Why is my Published count wrong?

On my 'You' page on the Instructables tab, next to the Published link is a number in parenthesis. It currently says (23). When I manually count the instructables I've published, there are 27. It's not really a big deal, I was just curious if anyone knew why the number isn't displaying properly?

Best of both worlds (LED technology)

People working under Professor John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have managed to combine the robustness of inorganic LEDs (the kind we use so much here), with the physical flexibility of organic LEDs.They have devised a new mass-production method that allows large numbers of small LEDs to be picked up by a robotic arm and embedded into a wide variety of other surfaces, including glass and rubber. The LEDs are bright enough that they can be spread out far enough to be transparent, paving the way for displays built into windows. This is not new science, just new engineering. What would you do with it?BBC storyUniversity of IllinoisThe BBC picked the story up from Science magazine.

Identify WW1 20mm shell casing?

A WWII veteran friend of mine has donated two shells collected on the battlefield in WWI by his father. Following are some photos of the shells: I have tentatively identified them as 20mm HE shells but would like more information, such as manufacturer and probably use. The first image shows both shells. They are 20mm in diameter, the brass casing is 70mm, the steel casing is 49mm and the head is 25mm. The steel casing shows an A and what appears to be an exploding shell. The other two images are of the bases. The letters at the top appear to be B &S;  but could be something else. I believe this is the manufacturer's mark. The 18 should be the year of manufacture. I have no idea what the 125 on the left means nor the numbers on the bottom which are hard to identify. Any assistance would be appreciated because my friend, who is now 95, would like more information concerning the shells. Thank you. Roger Laplante

World's smallest (manned) helicopter ready for a spin.

Those of us who've been dreaming of cheap personal air travel in the Buck Rogers, sci-fi jet-pack mode should turn their eyes towards Vinci, Italy on May 25. That's when Gennai Yanagisawa, inventor of the tiny GEN H-4 personal helicopter, will be taking his lightweight 165-pound whirly-gig on a demonstration flight. Why Vinci? According to the 75-year-old Yanagisawa, "Since the concept of our helicopter came from Italy, I always wanted to take a flight in the birthplace of da Vinci." Indeed, Leonardo's famous notebook drawings from 1493 show an "ornithopter" with a screw-like rotor. Like da Vinci's pioneering design, Yanagisawa's GEN H-4 has no tail. Instead, twin counter-rotating propellers cancel out the torque that requires single-rotor helicopters to have a perpendicular tail rotor. The GEN H-4 personal helicopter is actually available for purchase now, though Yanagisawa's company (located in the Japanese city of Matsumoto) has so far sold only six (2 in the USA).The cost for one is a reasonable $58,250 and once airborne, the GEN H-4 can fly at a somewhat sedate speed of 31 mph - slow yes, but probably faster than rush hour traffic. Veni, vidi, volanti! It's the perfect commuter vehicle! Land on the roof of your office block, maybe it folds up, but certainly just push it into the corner to make space for your workmates to land. Sure, it only does 31mph, but it can go in a straight line, over the stationary traffic.Story on InventorSpot

PC Windows7 will connect to network but no internet?

Hello all, I am having recent issues with my home PC running windows 7. I have working internet with a modem that has a built in router (It's Rogers brand new Hitron modem, the white skyscraper looking one).  Here is my current issue. When i plug in my PC through a cat5 cable it seems to screw with all internet connections. It gives me internet for roughly 30 seconds (very slow loads) and then eventually says I am connected to my network but no internet.  In turn, this also creates all devices to not have internet acees as well, PS4 hard wired, XBox One hard wired and also my mobile devices connected through the WiFi. If I unplug my PC LAN cable from the modem, both my wired consoles work and can access internet and same for any mobile device connected to the WiFi. I have done a bunch of possibly theories to help renew my ip. All my DNS settings within my network adapter are set to obtain address automatically, i have tried net flushes and release/renew with command prompt.. At one point I reset my modem and created a new network, this seemed to fix the problem for about a day or two, but now again it is back to only allowing me to access internet when i do not have my main PC plugged in. So very strange. Is there something else I can do? Does my computer have a virus that is hijacking the internet? any info would be much appreciated. I am a big gamer and as much as I enjoy the console, I am really missing getting on the PC Has anyone every experience anything like this?
