Whats better an alienware x51 or an Aurora (read Description)? Answered

I have heard from many people that alienwares are kinda the best computers. Well i went to the website on desktops. and i saw the X51 and the aurora The only things i want to do on a computer is play minecraft (and Modpacks) at Good settings, talk on skype, and if needed run a Modpack server (like Tekkit) for 4 of my friends. the Aurora seems more expensive but can hold 32ram (which is used for minecraft servers) if there is a better place to buy computers for the reasons above place a link below

How do I make an Xbox 360 headset to standard 3.5 mm adapter, so I can use it with my PC?

The 360 headset has a cell phone headset-sized jack, I think, which I have a female matching end for. I also have plenty of 3.5 mm male jacks laying around, along with the rest of the required basic materials and tools (wire, duct tape, soldering iron).

Idea: Raspberry Pi Skype Packet Sniffer - activates GPIO?

I had an idea for an interesting project: I'd really like a 'on air' light to light outside my office door whenever I am on a Skype call. I thought maybe of using a Raspberry Pi to monitor network traffic, looking for Skype packets. When a packet is detected, it turns the light on?  Any thoughts?

Is it possible to find the IP address of a Skype user?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if there is a way to find the IP address of a Skype user. Me and a lot of my friends have been getting heaps of people just saying "Hello! Please add me to your contact list" and then if you reply they say "How can you forget me, I want to meet with you, You can view my picture here..". (and that link redirects to a p0*n site, and it is the same link every time) I want to find their IP address to see if the same individual is doing it or if it is multiple people, because this is getting out of hand and just blocking them and reporting them won't help. I'm using a program called "SocketSniff" to find the IP addresses that Skype is using, but I can't seem to find any that are a home computer... They all seem to be servers. Any help finding who is doing this and helping me to find the IP will be greatly appreciated

pc wont connect to internet right

Hello,  more or less recently, i posted a forum topic stating that after a while, my pc would not let me connect to anything but skype, and that to fix it, i would have to reboot. now, rebooting is a pain, i have a myriad of things to close out of, deal with, etc every time i boot up. the answers i got were just telling me how to remove applications, which i know how to do (derp) and my pc stopped doing it, so i descided to give up getting an answer. its gotten WAY worse. when i boot up my pc, it will not let me connect to skype, steam, or anything else, it will let me view one or 2 web pages before requiring a reboot, and takes a LONG time to reboot. someone PLEASE help me, i cant do ANYTHING with my pc anymore! i have had the idea of replacing my wifi adapter with a direct connection, but my router is too far with too many walls in between. if anyone knows what to do, please tell me. also, no "just reinstall windows" crap, please. i REALLY need to not. What to do with a Vialta Beamer video phone?

So years ago before broadband internet, Skype, and video conferencing for free, there was a thing called a Beamer video phone which used your landline telephone line to do video conferencing between 2 people. So my mom bought 2 of them, mailed me one, and we tried to do video conferencing between PA and FL, and needless to say, it was terrible.  Video was choppy, etc, everything you would expect for video trying to go over a landline phone circuit.  I would sell it on eBay, but it doesn't look like anyone is buying it, so rather than have it take up any more shelf space, I'm trying to figure out what else I can do with it.  I haven't taken it apart yet, but it looks like a 3" LCD screen with a little web camera on it and a microphone, and some kind of circuit board.  The housing is actually very pretty (see picture) with it's glass outside. So what can I do with this thing?  Can I build some type of open source wi-fi video conference station using skype?  Or some type of in-home intercom system with video? The possibilities are seemingly endless, any suggestions are welcomed!!

Damn you service pack three!

Well I finally gave in to the little pop-up box in the corner of the screen and installed Xp service pack three and it messed me about something shocking... A list of issues: - The quazi-vista theme I was running wet itself completely, now replaced with Zune theme - Firefox three got very upset and now has a mint theme because it had a bog standard theme that looked similar - The startup screen (login bit) and the login screen for password protection on knocking off screensaver is going mad, both do work but have some bizarre half breed theme on the go - The computer ticked and banged for ages - Multiple other weird ones - Oh startup programs decided to appear, suddenly I was inundated by FF, messenger, skype, media player and photoshop all opening on startup rather than just wireless G-utility... The odd three are on my taskbar list, some connection... Skype, I have no clue. Before the restart everything worked really oddly, I caught on that it was time because it refused me the ability to install programs and generally messed around. On the upside I hit a couple of sites and the combination of a less heavyweight theme and a ram optimiser majigger have got the computer running faster, now I'm just clawing back all my old settings. Slowly.

Windows 8 won't let me open certain programs, help?

After a windows update all of a sudden certain programs won't open. Mainly photoshop, flash and Sai, which are all art programs. Yet all my other programs like Firefox, XSplit, Skype do work. I have tried to reinstall these and they still don't open completely. They act like there about to open (the banner comes up saying that it loads but then it closes out like I clicked cancel). When I open task manager it says that it's open and running even though it's actually not. I have scanned for viruses and found none and even restarted the computer multiple times. Sometimes it does work but a majority of the time it doesn't. The programs work fine on a windows 7 without fail, and before the windows 8 update they also worked perfectly. My other friends with similar computers (they also run windows 8) have no problem with the same programs and they run perfectly fine. Please help.

Mobile Virtual Presence Device? Answered

Right, so in "The Big Bang Theory" there is an episode where Sheldon makes an rc stand with a monitor on, and it has live footage of his face on it.  There are ways to do this, but they all seem to point to using an rc car with a 10 metre range and 30 minutes battery.  The flaw with this, is that if you want to be at work using one, or at someone's house with it, then you're gonna need a lot more than 10 metres!  How can you make it so that you can control it anywhere, either using wifi or just connecting somehow?  (I'm sorry, I'm really bad at electronics, so excuse my poor understanding.)  As an example, you don't need wifi to text someone, so do you need it to control an rc vehicle?  Ideally, I'd like to make one at about £300-£400, and as like the one from the big bang theory as possible, so not just a tiny stand that people have to keep charging and you have to crane your neck to see.  I'd be happy to use a £60 tablet with skype for the video, but what I'm mainly concerned about is how to control the rc stand/vehicle from a distance away. Thanks a lot! -Finzaz

I have multiple questions on interfacing the arduino with a computer. (refer to details) Answered

First of all I don't have hardly any experience with arduino, only with nxt.  Also I am trying to make a telepresence robot.  I have it figured out so that I can use Skype to video conference.  Then using yuuguu I can control the computer on the teleprescence robot.  The only thing that I need to do now is make a platform that will move around, with the arduino, that can take commands from the computer.  Kind of like a remote on the computer.  So that way I can use a laptop and control the robot by controlling the computer on the robot.  (sorry if that doesn't make sense, basically i just need a platform that takes commands from the computer it is connected to) Which leads me to my first question... 1) Can the Arduino be controlled by a computer? 2) If so, then what should I use to give it the commands easiest? 3) Which arduino should I use (it doesn't need to be versatile, just work consistently for this) 4) How do I program it/what commands do I use.(I have the arduino programming software downloaded, but don't know how to use it yet...) 5) How would I control motors/servos with the arduino I know it is a lot of questions, but please help. Thanks in advance!

soft LED screen

Soft LED display is our Patent product(Chinese National Patent), as is shown that the screen can be folded, curved and transformed, it can be applied any shape, like circle, arch, or even right-angle. Most importantly, it is light-weighted and easy installation, one square meter just weight about 5 kgs, and the whole system can be hung on the truss or on the building. And it can be expanded through connecting several pieces of soft LED display together to make a larger screen as you want. Through one and a half years developing, we make immense improvement and solve all important problem. We use the cloth processed specially, so it is waterproof completely, fire retardant and strong enough. (although the both sides is all waterproof, we sign it IP44, because we do not recommend our customer to use the screen in the open air all the time.) We develop this kind of product mainly applying to stage, TV studio, concert, night bar and disco hall. Attached a small video and some picture, please check it, through video and picture you can find the characteristic of our soft LED screen. We are eagerly hoping that we can cooperate with your distinguished coperation, and hope that our product can satisfy you with its light-weight, easy installation, foldability and flexibility, I think it is your best choice.Contact info: Fisher(sales manager) Beijing Huasun Optoelectronic Science Co., Ltd Add: Yongshun Town, Tongzhou District, Beijing, P.R.China Tel:+86 10 89512349 Fax: +86 10-89512339 mobile : 0086+13146411249 E-mail: skype: fisher201223

please I need help with a PROPER wiring diagram for my project

Hello everyone,  its great to see a site like this exists, I am still picking my jaw up off the floor with some of what i would consider genius minds making some pretty cool stuff. well let me give you guys and gals a little info about my project, I am making a 250 watt aquarium light for my fish tank after walking into the fish store and getting price shock from the ones that had in stock.  I will be using several wavelengths rated at 350ma per 10 watt LED bead and I have 12 forward voltage per LED bead. My question is I want to use an old computer supply to power the light as I would like to stay within budget as best as possible and the chance to tinker with other electronics would be awesome for someone like me.  I am familiar with the proper way to wire up LEDs using resistors and the correct order to connect them. My only question is I want to avoid a series of LED only because I hear if one goes out the series goes out, but then I heard about a by-pass method to battle that. The other reason why I want to use a series and parallel is because I don't want to drill a million holes in my heat sink, rather I would want them all to meet at one end and join them together and insert into the female plug that the computer supply 12v line will plug into (after a little modding of course to the computer supply to carry this plug) also if I am going with 12FV led beads would using 25 of them in series and parallel be less efficient than if I got 32-36 forward V led beads??? or does that potential ultimately lay within the wiring of the entire aquarium light? I don't want to loose any potential of these LED which i realize is quite easy to do if everything isn't exactly right as far as resistor choices go etc. I would like to add a temp fail safe shut off in the wiring of the panel but am unsure where to exactly place that. If someone wouldn't mind taking the time to show the the proper wire diagram and be able to walk me through the wire diagram maybe via skype, I would truly appreciate that very much as its a huge passion of mine to learn but I am not in the position to be able to go to school because I have a disease that wont allow me to really leave the house. but I am wondering if there is anyone out there that can help me with my little hobby and project as I would like to use the knowledge learned in future projects and tinker around with some more electronics around the house. it would also be something nice to do when i'm home bored all the time. have a great day I look forward to meeting my fellow instructables. I am here to learn!!

SIGGRAPH2010 - Emerging Technologies Exhibition

Last week I went to Los Angeles to attend my first Siggraph conference. There were so many different events to attend throughout the week. I spent the majority of my time exploring the emerging technologies exhibit. With all the interactive and innovative demonstrations it felt like I had stepped into the future for a moment! In this slide show I will highlight my favorites from emerging technologies. Some of these pictures were taken by me and some I took of their website (you will be able to tell which are which). If you see something that interests you I would suggest following the links I provide to learn more. Organized by picture (put cursor in top left corner of picture to figure out what picture you are looking at) Colorful Touch Palette (1) This is an electro-tactile stimulation systems that allows the user to feel and experience the tactile sensations of painted textures. Blend and combine textures to create new sensations. Shaboned Display - An Interactive Substantial Display Using Soap Bubbles (Favorite) (2-5) This was my favorite exhibit in emerging technologies even though parts of the bubble machine weren't working. This system is designed to show images in a matrix of soap bubbles. Air pumps lie beneath the display controlling the size and shape of the bubbles by monitoring the amount of air released. This system is also interactive! When a bubble pops (touch a bubble with your finger) a musical note will play! LED Tile by Junichi Akita @ Kanazawa University (6-7) Use a laser pointer to draw on these tiles to create patterns on LEDs.  To create large display areas connect individual units of LEDs which will allow them to communicate.   You can also interact with these displays in various ways.  Tilt the tiles and the LED patterns will look like they're falling off the tile in the direction tilted. 360-Degree Autostereoscopic Display (8-9) 3D graphics with out 3D glasses.  Using 360-degree autostereoscopic display technology you are able to view all angles of a 3D volumetric objects. I don't understand all the technical details, but this I do can use this technology for 3D interactive games, cool!  You can see in the images there is an interface to play BrickBreaker.  Walk around the device as you are playing the game. Imaging Skyping with this!!!!!!!! Haptic Canvas: Dilatant Fluid-Based Haptic Interaction (10) This new technology allows you to experience new haptic sensation by putting your hand in a pool filled with dilatant fluid.. Dilatant fluid is just a 1:1 mixture of starch and water.  It has a solid-like state when an external force is applied to it (grabbed, pushed, or tapped).  And it has a liquid-like state when it is free from the external force. This research is to create a new haptic interaction using this dilatant fluid by controlling the change in state, or dilatancy, of the fluid.  They have created a glove with a sucking tube and a filter which creates a change in state of the dilatant fluid.  The haptic sensations come from the friction between the jammed particles around the finger and at the bottom of the pool. You can see me trying this device (I don't think the camera man understood what I asked him to get me in the frame, but you can see my hand!).  This video gives a great explanation. Meta Cookie (11-12) Imagine eating a lemon and it tasting like chocolate!  This is the worlds first "pseudo-gustation system" which allows humans to perceive various tastes by changing visual and olfactory information.

iPad Problems - 14 Problems with Apple's iPad

Apple just revealed the new Apple iPad Tablet that will probably make it one of the first failures by Apple's latest line of products. Apple revealed this new Tablet PC as a challenger to netbooks. However, it's already been labeled a "less powerful, but more expensive netbook." Here are 14 iPad problems that made this Apple iPad an iDisappointment. 1. No Multitasking The Apple iPad is just like the iPhone, in that there is no multitasking. You can't work on a document and talk on AIM or Gtalk. In other words, the iPad just a giant iPod Touch (the iPod Touch being better) and cannot match netbooks. 2. It Has an Awkward Design The design is a bit awkward because you have to hold it in one hand and balance it while your other hand uses the functionality or more likely you will need to put it on your knees to use it properly. It's like holding a monitor, I'm sure nothing will happen to it. Some people complain about the Bezel being too large, but perhaps this was necessary so that you don't constantly give commands while moving around. 3. No Adobe Flash Were you considering watching Hulu on this? How about youtube (well we'll have to wait for an app for that)? Thinking of playing flash games while waiting on the bus? Oh well. 4. No USB, Need Adapters Again with the iPod design, you need to plug in the special Apple adapter. If you lose it, you'll have to buy another. If you want to plug in multiple devices you need USB to iPad adapters! Since it's not even using Mac OS, most USB devices would probably not work anyway. 5. AT&T; Once Again Are you thinking of purchasing the 3G version? You'll need to get it with AT&T; and think of how overloaded their service will be now. There is no Verizon, T-Mobile, or Sprint service available for this product, some of which has better coverage. You can't use T-Mobile's 3G at all because of their MicroSIM made specifically for AT&T.; 6. Memory Business Model Apple will charge you extra for higher memory. It's a business model they use for all their products to increase profits. That's why they don't want other storage devices being inserted to improve memory. You're also stuck with a limit of 64GB, so don't think about putting in all your music, movies, or games. 7. Touch Keyboard Many people were complaining about the touchscreen keyboard. Which would be fine if it worked perfectly and you didn't have to sit it exactly on your lap and make sure it's flat. You can however, attach an Apple keyboard, just another way for Apple to make money. 8. App Store Again Just like the iPod Touch you have to download everything from an App store. Meaning if you don't like Safari, you're stuck with it. Some apps may be banned once again. 9. No Cameras Yeah no web cams on the front, and no cameras for photos or videos from the back either. 10. No Removable Battery You can't just take an extra battery with you on a long trip because the battery works the same way as an iPod (though my bet is, it doesn't last as long). 11. No HDMI/DVI Output You can't plug this thing into your TV to display your HD movies. You'd need AppleTV for that. 12. No Widescreen 16:9 ain't happening, you're stuck with a 4:3 screen. 13. No GPS There's no GPS, so --unlike the T-Mobile MyTouch or the Verizon Droid which both run on Android, can multitask and have GPS so that you can use the Beta Google Maps Navigation system for turn-by-turn directions-- you're stuck with locating yourself via WiFi hotspots. 14. It's Large, Slow, and Clunky Not only will you have to buy accessories to protect your device, it's very large making it easy to drop and probably won't live a healthy life in a backpack filled with notebooks and other possibly sharp objects. There may be a number of accessories sold by Apple to cover some of these problems. The iPad max speed is 1GHz (A4 processor) and will probably be just as slow surfing the web as most other smartphones and it won't match up to netbooks. There is no Mac OS X or anything either, it's definitely the iPhone OS except without the Phone capability and of course I'm sure they will ban Google Voice and Skype.
