USB to network storage

My TV has a USB port for plugging in a thumb drive to play videos and music. As do several other devices Im aware of. What I would like is a device that when plugged into my TV or such  will pretend to be nothing more than a thumbdrive but actually be a wireless adapter that connects to my network and the 1TB network storage so I can access all my files at once.

Portable Storage Drive

I have a Nikon D200 Digital SLR that uses a CompactFlash (Type I/II) MicroDrive and when I'm in the field I take lots of high resolution images that takes a long time to download through the USB port of a laptop. I would like to be able to just carry a self-contained portable hard drive (i.e. 2.5" hard drive in an enclosure) with it's own battery source and just be able to insert the MicroDrive to a card reader connected to the enclosure and download all the images of the MicroDrive without the use of a laptop. A commercial version already exist but they are very pricey like the Epson P-2000. Basically I want the same functionality of the Epson P-2000 but I want the option to use whatever size drive I choose. How much battery would I need to power a hard drive? Would I have to use some sort of circuitry to transfer the images from the MicroDrive to the hard drive with a push of a button? Does anybody already have any instructions on how to build this?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Help with iPod Touch Storage?

Photo-storage device recommendations? Answered

I have an Archos AV700TV that I use as a backup for my digital photos as well as a photo album. Unfortunately, its 40GB memory is full. Any recommendations for a replacement device?  What I need is 100GB+, reasonably pocket-sized (the Archos is about 4.5 inches wide in its case), USB connectivity, rechargeable battery, and a screen (it doesn't have to be an Archos, but I'd prefer a known brand). The ability to play videos is a plus, but not a must. It doesn't have to be new tech or the latest model. UPSHOT: I bought an Archos 7, 250Gig.  Yummy.

Keyboard With On-Board Text Storage

Here's a thing I want, but have no idea how to build: THE INDEPENDENT KEYBOARD It doesn't care about computers! It save to itself! It's portable! There must be some way to build a keyboard that, once you turn it on, saves whatever inputs are typed to a plain text file on a thumb drive or SD card. Ideally, there'd be an on-off switch. When it's on, it's "recording" all inputs. Then you simply pull out the storage unit, plug that into a computer, and have your raw text. Any thoughts on how to pursue creating something like this?

hydrogen gas storage question?

I want to store hydrogen gas(not browns gas) in some kind of pressure container. Since the propane tank is  not a good idea from your forum, I was thinking about using a truck tire that could be pressurized to 120 psi.  What are the hazards in this process. I would suck out the air from the tube tire with a vacuum pump and then generate hydrogen gas, compress it into the tire.  Will it work or will it become unstable and blow up?.

How to store hydrogen at low pressure?

What is the most practical and cost efficient way to make a 10m3 gas bag for the storage of hydrogen? I am planning to store pure Hydrogen (made from water electrolysis) in an outdoor area, a bit like the way biodigestor gas is stored in low cost, small scale installations. My concern is the high effusing nature of the gas through membrane material. My first thought was to use reinforced PVC like that used for truck tarpaulins but I can't find any info on effusing rates verses other materials. Ideally the gas would be able to remain in the bag for a maximum 2-3 weeks until needed. This is an experiment on the practical applications of locally produced hydrogen, so I hope to be able to follow up any advice by constructing the gas bag and reporting back with the project progress. Any thoughts and advice would be gratefully received! Thanks in advance, Nick

Non SCSI, mega storage device?

So there I was, thinking that I had heard/read somewhere that it was possible to hook up many regular hard drives (IDE, EIDE) together to make up one logical partition that was dynamically expandable. I might be off my rocker, but I think I heard of it somewhere. An example is.. your company is upgrading it's computers, and intends to throw away old hard drives (i.e. 4GB, 20GB hard drives...) If you got your hands on them, you could hook them all together and make an expandable external storage. This would mean that if you have 3 20GB hard drives, you'd have a logical 60GB partition. Your buddy wants to throw away his old 10GB hard drive.. so you get that one and add it. Now you've got a 70GB hard drive. Has anybody ever heard of this idea before? No idea how to make it work, but I think in theory it would be neat.

Please help me fix this storage problem on my android 4.4.2 phone? Answered

Hi, I bought a new (cheap) "AKAI Dragon" android "kit kat" phone, and when I tried downloading more then a few apps, it said that there isn't enough storage on my internal memory. SO, I went to settings -> storage, and selected "phone storage" as the default write disk, and rebooted. Except that didn't work! "Phone storage" was still selected, but nonetheless when I tried downloading apps, the same problem appeared, with a window telling me to either uninstall existing apps, or to go to storage settings. Now, I did/checked everything I could think of for 3 days: as I said, I changed the default write disk, I tried moving existing apps to phone storage myself, but the button was not "active", I even rooted my phone and got rid of all the social apps I didn't want, but no matter what, when I try to install an app rom the play store, I'm met with the same message sending me to storage settings. Every time when I check storage settings, "phone storage" is selected as default write disk, but when I go to app settings, I discover that all of the apps are installed on "Internal storage" with no possibility to move them... (note that I rebooted my device multiple times while changing settings) What is worrying to me is that you cannot even choose "Internal Storage" as a write disk; there is only phone storage and SD card. So, does anyone have an Idea as to how I can start downloading apps to my almost empty 1.5 GB phon storage??? Or is this just a major bug? PS. please note that I'm not unfamiliar with Android phones; this is my third AKAI phone, just a bit upgraded. Also, sorry for the length of the question. Thanks

The Long-Term Viability of Solid-State Storage?

The following is a hypothetical (for now...): What Is The Long-Term Viability of Solid-State Storage? So, what does that mean? Well, I am asking about the viability and chances of data or hardware corruption of solid state storage if left in a relatively clean environment for...say...100 years, would it last? More specifically, if it were a boot drive, would it still boot? I am sure some of you will have viable alternatives to solid-state for this purpose I have not considered, which is why I am asking publically. I am trying to ensure the safety of important data over long-term (100+ years) storage and usage. Are there any recommendations/issues or alternatives any of you can think of which would decrease the chances of data loss over such a time?

My beloved Seagate 6GB pocket hard drive is dying. What should I replace it with? Answered

I've had this pocket-sized external hard drive for almost five years.  It's taken a beating, and I'm bumping up against the size limit.  I'm looking to replace it and hoping for some insight from the Instructables community.  Here's some bullet points: -I use this mostly for file storage and portable apps right now, but replacing it with something that will play MP3s would be a plus. Video is not necessary. -Minimum storage size would be 8GB, but if I'm playing music, it would need to be larger.  Ideally upwards of 40GB. -Portability is essential.  The current drive, when the cord is rolled up, is just shy of 3" in diameter.  I'd like something that's equally pocketable.  This also means the USB cord or connector must be integrated.  As far as I'm concerned, it's not portable if I have to carry a cable with me. -That said, I don't want it too small or I'm afraid I'd lose it. :-) -Price point is below $100. Any suggestions?

How long will a lithium battery store? Answered

If I bought 2 rechargeable lithium polymer batteries for a cell phone, but only needed one for now, could I store the unused battery until the first battery quit charging (and was garbage)? If the above question makes ZERO SENSE, let me try explaining it another way: Ok, you have this fancy gadget that you want to keep functioning for many years. Eventually, the battery inside won't be able to take a charge, and the battery will be obsolete and no longer sold. Would it make sense to buy extra batteries ('stock up') and store them for a time when the original battery went bunk; would the stored batteries be like brand new after many years (these batteries would have never been charged before.. they would be still originally packaged)? Hope that actually makes sense :D -Neph

Anyone achive solar power overnight?

Here is how to do it: Use a standard 55 gallon steel drum and stick one of these on it. Provide water cooling for the TEG: If your water is 20 Celcius, you should pump 36 Litres/hour to keep max power output. Also hook up piping for hot oil for heating Now wrap it with 400 mm of rockwhool insulation. Fill it with molten salt and heat it to 250 Celcius. Tadaa: 24 W of power output, round the clock. (minus the power for the cooling pump, maybe 1-2 W) I calculate that the temperature will drop from 250 to 225 Celcius in 16 hours. To get the temperature back up in 8 hours you need to heat it with 2400 W. You can do this easily with a solar trough system of about 3 m2. A trough is good because you only need to align every few days. Budget Oildrum 50$ ? Salt 370 kg  = 150$? TEG 80$ Cooler 80$ Pump 15$ Piping 100$? Trough (plastic sheet and mylar) 100$? high temperature oil pump 500$ ? About 1000@ total. Does seem like a lot for a little. Anyone have a better idea?

Q1) after draining a lipo battery to around 3.3v how long can i safely keep it at that level?

Q2) what is the maximum safe time i can store a fully charged lipo before it needs to be used? i have 2 lipo batteries for a speaker trailer and until their first charge and use they are being stored at 3.85v. i have done some google research and i think for the most part i understand how to safely use, charge and store them. They won't be used very often, perhaps 5 times a year on average. 1) i have purchased low voltage alarms so that i will know when to switch everything off however i will in most cases be using the speakers out in parks and fields at least 30mins to an hours ride away from a power socket so would it be safe for the batteries to sit at such a low voltage for around an hour before i can get them on the charger again?  2) previously i used SLA batteries and was able to charge them safely overnight before an event while i slept but according to everything i've read about lipo charging i have to keep a close eye on them while they charge so i would prefer to charge them during the day prior to an event, however i'm concerned that several hours 'storage' at full charge might be asking too much...

What happens to the WD PiDrive Node Zero?

Hi there! This is my first time using this community function on instructable and I want to ask if anyone knows what happens to the WD PiDrive Node Zero (which is a Raspberry Pi zero add-on shown in the image if you don't know what it was)As what I have found on the internet, all shops that used to sold this have no more in stocks and I didn't find much reviews on this product either. I just come across this product online and feel this will be quite useful if I can get one. Need an alternative to "long-term food storage in plastic buckets".

Hello, I'm in Mumbai, India. I spoke to a few people from the U.S. who do survival things and one had spent his life in long-term food storage. I wanted to this too. He explained me very clearly how to store food-grains long-term. What I was told is to get some big food-grade plastic buckets with air-tight lids and put the grains and a calculated amount of dry ice on top of the grains using newspaper. Then, put the lid on and after sometime, check if there is any expansion or change in the bucket and if the dry ice is evaporated. Then seal the lid tightly. But, my main problem is getting plastic sealed buckets here in India. I have tried a few malls, bakeries, shops and even online but can't find air-tight buckets or big containers larger than one liter capacity. I was able to find dry ice, though. Can anyone tell me an alternative to air-tight buckets that I can use? Much appreciated, Regards. RS

Has anyone built an NAS before?

I'm trying to build an NAS with a spare computer I have. I'm trying to run Freenas, but every time I try to install the OS, I get a read error: 0x20 The computer in question is an old alienware M9700 my cousin gave me. For some reason, the computer doesn't give me the option to boot from a flash drive, so I assume it can't. So here are my questions: 1. What is this read error I'm getting? I've tried googling it, but I've only gotten very mixed results on it. 2. Is it possible to run Freenas this way? (without a flash drive, via disk) 3. Since the laptop has two SATA ports, could I install the OS to a smaller HDD, and then use the remaining as the storage space? I've been told that you can't install the OS onto the same drive intended for storage.
