Hello, so this year for halloween I am hoping to go as our hero Nikola Tesla. the costume will be fairly easy I'm just planning on wearing an old suit etc. but what i really want to do is incorporate some type of electrical effect into the costume. I know a bit about electronics and can solder and figure things out when needed, all i really need is an idea of some type of electrical thing that wouldn't kill me and i can power via batteries. in a perfect world I would like to create some type of spark gap generator between my hands but this might be too lofty an aspiration. Anyway if anyone has any ideas specifically ones that wont kill me and aren't too hard to accomplish i would be very grateful.

Hi! I made a tesla coil like this guy! https://www.instructables.com/id/Tesla-Coils-for-Dummies/ But I didn't ground the secondary coil of the tesla coil. It seems to work ok without it, but I'd like to see it preform better. Would it help if I grounded it? Thanks!

I purchased a small tesla coil kit online. The kit is working but I need help improving it. Instead of having the typical primary and secondary windings with a toroid on top it has the driver circuit pulse a 50k transformer producing a 1 inch spark. I'm wondering can the output of the transformer be connect to a typical primary windings and secondary windings with a toroid on top? I have a link below to the schematic. Also if this works would you recommend 1000 or 2000 turns on the secondary and how many on the primary? 30 or 36 gauge for the secondary? Hello everyone, I am looking to get some advise. I am building a Tesla coil and cant really get any transformers other than MOT. I have four MOT with all their other components (Capacitors). What I am asking is can I use these MOT wired up in a certain way and I also read somewhere that I would need to add a component to prevent the MOT's from sucking in too much power. If anyone out there can give me some detailed advise it will be great. I just started the build so pictures are coming soon. Thanks in advance to you all

I am building a tesla coil, the first i have ever built. I know that one side of the secondary coil is supposed to be grounded (the other side being the donut). Problem is, i am not clear where to ground it to. The ground socket on the wall outlet? a nail stuck in the ground? the negative terminal on the first transformer? I'd like to have this straightened out.

I need ideas for a 2 tesla electromagnet. I am trying to make the strongest magnet possible without additional cooling from a fan.. I don't know whether or not I can use high voltage, and low amps, or High amps, and low voltage. Or even inbetween.. Also, throw me that calculation for the electromagnetic strength. And if you could be awesome, explain to me how to use that formula, as I am not mathematically inclined. Thank you.

Hello. I am currently trying to build a Tesla coil. However, due to a little mistake my MMC only has about 1/4th of the capacitance required to get it to resonate . Now I wonder what the best course of action would be. add a resistor to reduce the amount of amps to 1/4th of its maximum (6000 volt, 5 mA instead of 6000 volt, 20 mA), and thus the capacity required for resonance (I have a variable resistor here). Or just run it with full power, which would mean it would most likely not function as good as it could (spark gap fires 4 times where it only should fire once) I am currently not capable of adding up extra capacitors to the bank due to a lack of money, but might decide to do this in the furture Help would be appriciated.

My high school recently had an engineering fair, and my friend had built a tesla coil. Its has multiple spark gaps, an RF filter (I think thats what its called), a 120 to 20000v transformer, and toroid top-load, if any of that matters. We/I would entertain ourselves by standing away from the coil and holding a fluorescent tube (by the glass with bare hands, not by the contacts) near the top-load and watching it light up. Even though I was well away from the coil, my forearm muscles would twitch, especially it the coil spark hit the contact on the other side of the tube. Then if anybody touched me, both of us would feel a shock and the same slight twitching (the same kind of twitching you feel from those electric muscle stimulators with the pads you put on sore muscles). We even set up a chain of about 5 people holding hands, and all of us would feel a shock, even though only the first person in the line (aka me) was holding the fluorescent tube near the coil, with my hand on glass, no where within range of the streamers coming from the top-load. Now for my question: is this dangerous? (I know its non-lethal, im talking about my nerves) And what exactly was happening? because it was not an incredibly large coil, and i know that the field of a coil is much larger than the actual streamers. I also read somewhere that insulators dont work the same at incredibly high voltages. I think what I was feeling was the skin effect, and the charge came from the excited electrons in the tube. If my ideas are correct, then wouldn't me holding the tube be just the same as if i had just put my hand near the top-load and let the streamers hit me?

What kind of multimeter would measure the output in volts and the frequency of my secondary. It totalling in height is 22.7inch with a 3.5168inch diameter. Primary applied voltage 13.66kv with a distance of .5in between primary coil and secondary

I have heard a little about resonating a tesla coil and wan't to make sure that it is going to before I spend money for my primary (copper is expensive). My secondary has about 1400 turns of wire. I am going to be using a bucket capacitor like The Geek Group on youtube built, and a 60 Hz high voltage transformer. My primary will hopefully be 1/4 inch, and I wan't to know how many turns I need and if I can do a funnel looking shape like this one Tesla Coil. One other thing is that my tesla coil is 30 inches tall, so does my primary need to get closer to the top to work. I think I got all of the primaries and secondaries right, I know which is which, but sometimes I swap the words. It would be a great help if you answered my question.

I've seen plenty of these projects using a constant stream of air to turn the turbine. Surely with the combination of rotational inertia and an intermittent jet of air a constant rotational force could be sustained whilst conserving the compressed air available?
Alright, I ask that everyone please read everything in this question before answering :). I hopefully going to be very thorough. I am building a tesla coil and am just about to give up and buy a NST. I have many high voltage sources laying around, but, so far I haven't had much luck. The first plan was to use a large ballast (florescent light) to drive a flyback, but it was to powerful, so I got a CFL driver, and it didn't work (not the driver so much as the whole project) so now I am left with an ignition coil. I know that I can use a light dimmer switch to power it, but it will still be 60hz I think and I here that is not safe for a tesla coil. Although, I don't think anyone is going to let high frequency and voltage arc across their skin anyway. So will something at this low of a frequency still work to power a tesla coil. If not do you have any ideas I can use. I have a flyback transformer and an ignition coil so any ideas that come to mind please share.

Ive built a pretty good sized tesla coil. Problem is, I kinda of afraid to run it without some sort of protection for my NST an my house wiring. I have three other coils of varous sizes that Ive run without any problems, but I really dont want to push my luck. Iam trying to build a dc powered tesla coil, for that i've make use of ignition coil of scooter or motorbike driven from a fan dimmer and mica capacitors, it works very well and gives powerful sparks the output is fed to the 4 salt water capacitors the primary is wounded in a 4 inch pvc pipe with 10 and half turns , and secondary is 28 swg on a 1.5 inch pvc pipe of lenghth approx 2 feet, but it gives too much week output sparks at the top load , give me some suitable solution , i have chosen this as my final year major project?
