tilt sensor controlled by wireless remote

Hi: I would love to make a tilt sensor that can be placed inside something of value (since I'm a musician this happens to be a guitar case:), so that if someone picks up the guitar case, it would activate a loud alarm. It's easy enough to come up with a design for a tilt switch (maybe a ball bearing inside a tube), but it would be really nice if I could arm the circuit with a wireless remote. Any suggestions? thanks

Advice for a simple bluetooth and tilt sensor device.

Hi! I'm new to electronics and want to create my own simple Bluetooth device. Basically I want to create a device with a screen that I can control using an app on a phone.  I'm planning on using a 3-axis accelerometer too, just to learn more about how those work and play around with some tilt options.  I'm working with a friend that is an EE student, but we still need some advice to get started. Basically I want to use a phone app to update photos or videos displayed on the device.  Also, I'd like to create a small program where I can tilt the device and move a ball on the screen.  Right now I know I need a Bluetooth module, a screen, and a 3-axis accelerometer but I have no clue which kind (there are so many choices! especially for the Bluetooth modules!).  We have somebody that will do the programming for us, so we just need some direction as far as the electronics go. Also, should I use something like adruino, or should we look for more experienced engineers to design it for us.  We'd rather learn how to do it ourselves though, and we don't have enough money to pay for a professional. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!  I'm starting to get very interested in electronics as a hobby, and would love to learn how to start doing these things! Regards, Patrick

Surveillance Camera System?

Automated pan/tilt surveillance system. Camera will be mounted under/inside a clear dome. Want to add Infra-Red spotlight. If light is mounted inside the dome with the camera, I'll have reflections from the inside surface of the dome causing a problem for the camera. Can't find a "non-reflective" spray coating but even if I do, it will affect the camera view (fuzzy picture) Anybody have any ideas ?

How to tilt a bed / linear actuators?

I'm thinking about making an alarm clock that literally gets me out of bed! The alarm clock would start tilting the bed to one side, untill i either get out of bed, or fall out of bed :) I was thinking of using linear actuators on one side of the bed to do the tilting. Does anyone here have any experience with linear actuators? How strong are they, and where can I buy them cheaply? Any other ideas on how to tilt a bed? Cheers - Chr

How does a Tilt Swith Work?

attiny85 tilt switch dc motor

How can I control a tilt-pan servo using my pc or arduino?

Turn dial to generate pulses

Here is my proposal. I'm building a pan/tilt unit. I plan to have a 200 step motor attached to a 20:1 worm gear, (the latter is needed so it will 'lock' in place, and not be solely reliant on the motor's holding torque.. So in order for the output shaft to turn 180 degrees needs the worm gear to turn 10 times. In turn the motor must do 10 revs, which would need 2000 pulse steps. It's the pulse generation that's proving difficult. Whilst a 555 timer could generate pulses, I want it to be 'mechanical' For example, if I turn the knob 90 degrees, I want to create 1000 pulses, (45 degrees creates 500 pulses) and so on, so the knob matches the physical position of the camera. If I turn the knob 180 degrees in 1 second ... the motor will turn 180 degrees in 1 sec. If I turn the knob slowly, pulses will be generated slowly, and the camera/motor will turn slowly. My idea at present is some sort of optical encoder ... but that would need 4000 divisions on the wheel!! Or - a 1024ppr wheel with a 1:4 step up gearing ... but such encoders are several hunderd Pounds!! And I would need two of them!! I have software that will allow me to print an encoder wheel, but resolution will have to be 'course' since it will use an LED / transistor, so I suspect around 64 divs. I purchased a RC servo, wondering if I could remove the motor, and turn the output shaft by hand. Couldn't be done. I've also considered 'planatary gears' in reverse to 'step up' the revs ... but I cannot locate any 'hobbyist' versions other than the Tamayia type. Also briefly looked at RC servos, but having done the maths, it would be impractical to get the output to move (say) 0.1 degrees as the motor would only move about 1/4 of a rev and have no torque!! (One option may be to make it continuos rev, and place a feedback pot externally.but again, moving 0.1 degree around a pot would create minimal feedback) Incidentally, 0.1 degrees is the stepper resolution 180 degrees / 2000 steps Anyone any ideas? Bearing in mind that the speed of the pulse train is dependant on how fast the control (pot) is turned, and also matches physical camera position. Encoders are preferred option as it's then possible to electronically guage which way the motor is turning. If electronic, here is (sort of) what the circuit would need to compute. (Sample and hold?) Moved from 0 to 45 degrees in one second. That degree of movement needs 500 pulses, thus need to generate a pulse width to get 500 pulses in 1 second timescale. ** This is just to give an example. The actual sampling rate would be much faster. If it was a 'slow' 1/10th second, in the above example it would check every 4.5 degrees, and generate 50 pulses in that time scale.

I work at a company that does video taped conferences, and its one person working a sound system, a recording device(captures video and audio, as well as slideshows) and a video camera. Getting an ESC to work with arduino

Hello every one, I need to know if its possible to communicate between an ESC and an arduino. I would like to use a tilt sensor measured by the arduino to control a brush-less motor through an ESC. Ideal motor for my project? Answered

So I am building a pan and tilt boom rig for a camera. I have the basic idea down but I was wondering if I should use servos or stepper motors. My biggest concern is that when I stop the motor turning at any given angle, It won't rotate back down due to gravity. I am using arduino to process and a joy stick to control which motor turns and which direction. Also, as some additional advice, I was wondering how to control the speed with the joy stick, it runs off potentiometers.

Arduino coding help! Buttons, switches, and servos are not agreeing.

Hi my name is Nash and I've been playing with Arduino Duemilanove for about a year and just touching a little bit of everything. Right now I'm have the Arduino powering basically a pan/tilt device that rotates horizontally 360 degrees and vertically 90 degrees. Using a specific code containing one button, I can have the Arduino run a sequence of the two servos. I would like to add a second button and have a switch to choose "modes." If the switch is OFF, then pushing one button will run the sequence- simple enough. When the switch is ON, I would like the same button as before as well as an additional button control rotation of the horizontal servo. I have the code using only one button and no switch to run the sequence and the device runs flawlessly. Once I add the "switching" part to the code, the servos freak out and fidget constantly without a positive result. I am fairly new to the servo library in Arduino and am open to any kind of instruction or changes to my code below. I want to control a RC Rock Crawler 4X4 truck with Wi-Fi in place of the radio control? ?

I have a RC "radio control" 4X4 Rock Crawler Truck that I have mounted a AIRSIGHT Wi-Fi camera with pan and tilt that has a 360 degree range of about 150 Feet from my wireless router, I want to use the pan signal from the camera to control the steering and use the tilt signal for forward and reverse. The truck will not need a speed control as it moves very slow anyhow. It has a normal servo for the steering and two 12 volt DC motor's for the front and rear drive's.  I have a Arduino UNO and a 2A Motor Shield that I bought for the truck but this will be my first project of this type and I need help. Also I will not need the camera to pan or tilt but I thought it would be easy to cut the wires to the pan and tilt motors and use them for my signal wires for steering and forward and reverse, also I can drive the truck with the camera software from any PC or tablet.  Thanks for any help!

How do I control two servo motors?

I am a beginner in this area, but been looking around on google for info on servo motors. What is the absolute simplest way to control two servo motors (for a video camera pan and tilt head), from the same unit? I don't want to go wireless (radio controlled), but instead keep it wired. Is it even possible to control pan and tilt with one single joystick? I could really need a beginners tutorial on this... Thanks for your answers!

Robot neck design?

I dont know if anyone is familiar with the Star Wars Old republic T3-M3 Droid. I have just stated building a full size replica of this Droid but could do with some advice on the neck mechanism. The head is going to be reasonably heavy but I want it to be able to pan, tilts and rotate reasonably fast. I have looked at using servos to control the pan and tilt and motor to rotate or i could use linear actuators. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could build a simple but effective system, or even better have any working models of drawings I could look at to get some inspiration, I have builders block.

how to build simple programable 2 function ( head pan and tilt) pilot figure for rc airplanes

Hi, I'm completely new to animatronics bot have been designing, building and flying RC airplanes for 40 or more years, I need some help with a project, namely, I wish to build an animatronic pilot figure for a large 1/3 scale airplane and would like it to be programmable so that once it is turned on, it will carry out a series of movements over and over until switched off.    These would be a combination of head pan and tilt that I could program into the system, the mechanical side of things is simple enough, a 2 servo camera gimbal but I need help with the electronic side of things..............can anybody help ???

Position of gyro and iPhone during calibration?

I have a gyro and using an app on the iPhone (tilt meter).  My question may be basic. But does the gyro sit ontop of the phone, while the phone is standing up (see attached) or is the iPhone laying flat (display up) while the gyro is ontop of the phone?

Brushed DC motor HP requirements for Longboard? Answered

So I have 2 brand new tilt/trim pump motors and thought about making a set of matching electric longboards since products like Boosted Boards seem to have become fairly popular.  I am not too sure whether the tilt/trim motor would be strong enough though, they are a decent size motor though.  But it got me thinking what size is required for an electric longboard? The main problem with the tilt/trim pump motors is that I can't find specs on them anywhere, just specs for tilt/trim pump assemblies they are off of, but nothing about the motor itself other then SAE J1171 Marine rating.  Because of this I thought of buying another DC motor to do the job.  (Picture of tilt/trim motor) The constraints for me is that I have a couple 12 - 24v 100A motor controllers already, for brushed motors only.  As well, I want to just pick up a couple cheap $40 12v, 24AH Sealed led-acid (SLA) batteries from the local Ace Hardware and run either a 12v or 24v motor.   Options on eBay for affordability purposes range from 12v, 24v, 90v and 180v dc, obviously 90v and 180v are out of the question.  Looking through the 12vdc and 24vdc motors, there are many fractional HP motors available.  I was looking at something like this; http://www.ebay.com/itm/172252712203?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName;=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Running 1/4 HP at 24v, would 1/4HP be enough though?  I know electric motors HP ratings are lower then petrol engines, a 6.5HP petrol go kart runs about the same as an identical kart with a 1HP electric motor. Digital pictures merged to holographic - like image?

A souvenir vendor took two digital pictures of me and my husband, merged them on a computer, printed the interleaved (?) image, then adhered a piece of acrylic with vertical lines (scratches?) to it.  The result is like a hologram in that you see the two different images as you tilt the (acrylic overlaid) photo. How can I make those?

Airfoil vs. Flat Wings?

I built a model airplane which is rubber band powered. At first I built the wing of the shape of an airfoil and I can assure you that the shape was perfect. When I tested the plane, it just kept on going and going straight with very high speed but never took off. I guessed that the weight was more. So, after removing the weight it still didn't take off. I then used just a flat piece of cardboard for the wing with a slight tilt, so that it would deflect the air downward and produce the upward thrust. I then tested the plane, and even though the wing was heavier than the airfoil one and the plane moved on the ground slower than before maybe due to increased drag and weight.....the plane took off just beautifully just after a few seconds of launch!!! I don't know what was the reason, the airfoil shape was perfect, the surface area of the both wings was same. I guess that flat wings produce more lift.....I doubt that the airfoil produced any lift at all, or maybe they require significantly higher airflow over them than flat tilted wings to produce a fair amount of lift...can you tell me what could be the reason?

Trying to make a turret with stepper motors, limit switches, and a joystick. I would like some help if possible

Making a turret that runs on four stepper motors to turn it 360 degrees. than one stepper to tilt the gun up and down, which has 2 limit switches and has a door lock actuator to fire the gun. all of this ruins on a 4 position joys-tic with a button to fire. trying to have this run on an Arduino Uno if possible. would need help coding and figuring out the wiring

How do I "unbrick" the Electronic Brick shield? Answered

I'm trying to connect external sensors (in the picture below - 2 tilt switches), to an Electronic brick shield like this (see picture): I extend 2 buckled plugs from the shield with male-to-male headers. As far as I can understand from their cookbook - white supplies gnd, red gives +5v, and black is the signal - so I take the gnd and +5v from *one* of these cables and connect them to the breadboard's -/+ busses. Black goes to the switch (and to gnd via a pul-up resistor). The second switch takes +5v from its plug's red line (could also take it from the bus - but it looks neater this way), The other side of the switch goes to the black line (yellow jumper). This setup simply turns off the Arduino (short-circuit?). Pulling out the buckled plugs turns it on again. This tilt switch setup is pretty simple (I've tested it without the Electronic brick shield - sending the inputs from them to LEDs - and it works fine). I've also tried "unbricking" the LCD brick itself (That's what I'm really after) by sticking jumpers into the holes in the bus cable (according to what I've gathered from the Electronic Brick cookbook), and I couldn't get it to show anything or turn on the backlight. Is there some voodoo I'm missing here? Thanks.

video projector won't work Answered

Hello, I have been trying to get a Sanyo Multiverse to work with a 20w chip LED. I may have tricked it's motherboard it into thinking it is powering a bulb. The projector stays on instead of turning off when the bulb was missing. I put the led chip where the bulb was, and turned on the LED on. I saw a yellow light. If I tilt the chip inside the light housing, it will change the colors projected. I could not get a change in color as I pressed buttons like menu or input. Is the lcd not getting a signal? The LCD wires are plugged in all the way.

I was building my 4d rc plane, and then i thought if i could build a rc conputer controlled uav, and fly it over the neighbour s house, and with a pan and tilt camera, it would be nicer. and i don't even need to go to the flying field. I was wondering, if i could make a rc plane with more than 1 hour of flying time and can fly with a range with 20 kilometers that would be the perfect model. How is it possiable to make a light yet powerful plane.  pls help me with this project ps.i have a budget of 400 dollars.

I was wondering what would be the best prgram to learn for creating UI's for sending signals to an arduino, this would be simply like a button or box that a value could be typed in for now i plan to just play with some LED's but my goal is to have an interface with the equivalent of a d-pad so that i could control the pan/tilt of my latest project and later on (my next project) control the speed of motors/servos or activate preset patterns for a spirograph  i would really like to get started and learn how to but im at a loss in where to start

Ideas for a creation?

Hi all, I've got an opportunity to lay hands on this sweet wifi webcam:  http://goo.gl/I4hpFZ Thing is, I've already got one monitoring my 3D printer, and I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to spy on my roommates when I'm away.  I've got a couple ideas about what to do with it, but I thought I'd throw it open to the community:  got any cool ideas for interesting ways to use/alter/hack/repurpose something like this? Currently I'm considering tearing into it and using the remotely controllable pan and tilt motors to turn it into a mars rover for my house, possibly fitted with a laser to annoy my cats.  What do you think? How can I figure actual power consumption for my kiln, without buying a wattmeter? Answered

I'm working on some fused glass projects for sale, and I'm trying to figure my kiln's electrical consumption into the price of the items as accurately as possible. I can easily figure the max draw of the kiln, but it's not running full tilt throughout the whole fusing cycle. In fact, through much of the cooldown phases, it hardly comes on at all. I don't want to grossly overestimate and gouge the customers, but I also dont want to underestimate and lose money on the sales. I also don't want to buy a 220v wattmeter that I'll never use again. I don't need super-precise measurements, just reasonably accurate ones. Is there a feasible alternative to a wattmeter for this application?

Antenna Tracker Pointer using GPS

I want to build a systems that can point a directional antenna to a known set of GPS coordinates, because if the base unit with the antenna knows it GPS location and then can have the know data of another directional antenna's GPS coordinated either via Google Earth File or a spread sheet or long/lat's or via another method....also I would like this system to be able to track a UAV or R/C plane/copter as the DIY antenna trackers do as I have seen on R/C forums and You-tube. the initial request is what I desire first....I want to go out into a field and set up this tripod mounted Pan/tilt mechanism with mounted directional antenna(s) and point it to the closest fix antenna of known coordinates, automatically.

UPS external battery setup?

 I have a APC BACKUPS 500 with a dead battery, it can supply up to 300 watts continuously. However, at full tilt my computer can use up to 1000watts and the monitor uses about 150. With standard use my computer uses around 400watts or so. Would it be possible to use 2 UPS both wired in parralel to a single deep cycle lead acid battery. Would this work? The thing I'm worried about is wouldn't both UPSes try to charge the battery at the same t ime, and would that be ok? Red is positive and blue is negative in the picture. I would hopefully get around 1 hour of backup. Also, is there any way to make my computer go into energy conservation mode when the power goes out? I have a 2008 8 core mac pro.

Laptop Fan Buzzing? Answered

Hello Everyone, Need some advice here. I have noticed a slight buzzing sound in my fancy gaming laptop's fan recently. Its only audible when the fan is on its highest speed and then you wouldn't notice it if your volume is up. I'm fairly certain the problem is that the fan is slightly off balance. Here's why: 1). I completely dismantled the laptop and cleaned it of all dust and particles, so its not clogged or impeded in any way. 2). The sound stops if you tilt the laptop approx 30 degrees in any direction. (The sound actually gets louder until the 30 degrees is reached, then it completely stops). My question is: What should I do about it? Is it really much of a problem? Do I need to replace it? If I do, my warranty literally expired 1 week 1/2 ago, is there anything I can do about that? I feel cheated by the timing personally.

programming help

First of all, I am new to this. But for my CEIS course project I decided to program an rc vehicle because I thought it would be COOL! Now I am knee deep into the project and I am needing guidance.  So I am going to attempt to stack raspberry pi hats. One adafruit pwm for servos and the other adafruit pwm for dc and stepper motors. The first thing I done wrong was solder the gpio headers on backwards. Since I'm not too professional with a soldering iron I ended up making the drives of no use and ordered more. Before I done that, I got my pi camera working! Still need to program the pan/tilt servos. I have battery power, wiring, almost everything as far as hardware. Just not sure if I am headed in the right direction. I tried different things with python and the i2c but now when I start up the Kernel Module fails.  Any help will be great!

Gameboy Color cart opened, chips removed. Wondering if anyone has specs for them?

I decided that I should do something with some of those old Gameboy Color games I had lying around, so I opened one. Inside, I found 4 chips, along with a 3v battery, a tilt sensor, and various capacitors and resistors. I was wondering what each of the chips do, as far as their use. And could I use them again for a different purpose? Here are the chips: *Small 8DIL with the Microchip logo, and 106 134A *Square chip with 8 pins on each side(32 in total), M8C3 -2 047U3E *Thin rectangular with 22 pins on both sides(44 in total), MX E012304-M MX23C1603-12A 1C9868A1 *28 pin rectangular, BSI BS62LV256SC-70 S2827V53114.N F0110 Taiwan(Obviously that means it was made in Taiwan) Just a quick check to see if anyone knew what any of these were. sensitivity of servo that is controlled via android phone

How to build a simple computer from a cardboard box (or 2) and some marbles?

Quite a few years ago (around 36-40) I read about a simple computer, made of a cardboard box, some dividers, and using 2 groups of colored marbles; whereas the object was to tilt the box  and one marble would fall through.  Depending on which of the 2 colors came through (pretty random) a move was made in the game (a simplified version of tic-tac-to).   Wrong moves were removed and eventually the "computer" learned to win the game every time. BUT I can find no reference to this, nor the book it was in.   I don't remember the title nor author, but it was very much like the book:  "1, 2, 3...Indiniry" by Gamow (it is not this book, I have it and have read it through several times looking for it).  I have been looking for this info for about 20+ years, and decided one of the more sciencey readers amongst you all might remember  it, the book or something to give me a clue to where to find this.

Movie Glasses

I had an idea the other night, but no idea of how to go about it. I Want to take two small screens probably about one to two inches big, then mount them on sunglasses and somehow input movie from an HDMI or an HDMI micro. like This: http://www.chinavasion.com/cool-gadgets/60-inch-virtual-video-screen-glasses-for-iphone-ipad-ipod/ but for anything that can output HDMI. i thought about this when i was on the plane and was tired of the people behind me asking to tilt the monitor -.- i have a Thrill 4G that uses a Micro HDMI to HDMI so im sure it would work with my phone and many others if we did it(although users without that HDMI port would need the adapter that makes Mirco USB to HDMI aswell) so basicly.. Stop motion camera crane

Ok. I need to create a camera crane. It dosn't have to be very big since I'm using it for stop motion. Just a simple pan and tilt crane with a counterweight to off-set the camera. Now, I can make a regular one very simply using a video crane method that you can find on this site. However, this crane must do 2 things. 1. It must be able to move at incredibly small increments. Only fractions of an inch at a time. 2. The crane must be able to hold it's position in a very sturdy manner. It cannot move even in the slightest because stop-motion requires that the camera does not move at all while individual pictures are being taken. For the life of me, I can't figure it out. Traditionally, a "step motor" is used to create the individual movements for things like this. But they are incredibly expensive. I've had more luck with gears and servos, however I want to figure out the logistics before I just go buy gears individually on a website that may or may not work. Your help would be appreciated. Controlling a servo with a Micro-controller?

So I decided to spend some time to make a "gimbal" in a very loose sense. Basically I was experimenting using a square wave oscillator to generate the correct PWM to have a servo rotate between 0 and 180 degrees when a tilt sensor is tripped. After some research multiple sites said having a 1ms pulse every 20ms would have it move to the 0 degree position. Great so I will make a oscillator pulses ~1ms on one side and 19ms on the other. However this does not seem to be working. I am curious if it is a fault in my math or if the tolerance on the parts I am using are just too wide to be any good. Here is a diagram of my set-up with the values a came up with. One spot that may be weak is that I just notice someone somewhere mentioned using 50Hz for the timing I just used that number when I calc my figures. Any feedback?  Also a side note is that I have been able to move the servo in one direction only and by accident ( in fact it's what inspired this project) when C1 & C2 were 2.2nF and the R1 & R2 were 10k potentiometers that I turned until something happened. Now that I am trying on purpose no results.

Need advice in creating a sound activated robot

Hi to everyone! I am new here and will really appreciate any help or advice on my project. Truth is, i am very new to electronics and thus, have little knowledge on how to proceed with my project. In summary, my project is basically creating a friend(robot) that will activate upon receiving electrical impulse from a mic. The motion it will have is basically the lighting up of LEDs (for the eyes) and the head tilting upwards (using servo or DC motor idk...) when sound is detected. However, i want the motions to be there for 30 secs even after there is no more sound before reverting back. I have done many research regarding this but it is just too complicated for me to understand. I would really appreciate it if the solution or advice is simple enough for beginner to understand. Also, i don't want "clap" activated, i want it to be sound activated like simply speaking normally. I would probably ask even more questions in the future, so, hope i will get along well with everyone here! p.s this project is a very scaled down version because i wouldn't be able to handle the full scale electronics...
