I am constructing the flyback driver found on the power labs website and cant get a 2N3055 transistor quite yet. I do, however, have a bag of transistors i pulled out of CRT monitors. I was wondering if one would be a good substitute for the 2N3055 for driving a new flyback, the number is C4916, the base-collector voltage is 1500 V and the Collector current is 7 Amp

I would like to know if someone could draw up a small circuit using  a TIP3055 as a switch for these led lights,Im running these off a small circuit for a pir sensor, that uses a relay, and i want to use a Transistor or a mosfet  because of size. I just cant do the math for the cir.here are the spec. for the led lights."Working input voltage :12vdc working power 36W . working current 5 amp I know that you have to feed the Base with a lower voltage, and the emitter goes to ground, and the collector get the 12vdc. tks for the help. I never was good at algebra in school, don't even remember it,  ha ha ha

Transistors in series

If I were to put transistors in series (and hook up there bases together through proper biasing resistors) would it increase the voltage capacbility of the circuit? I need a way of switching on and off about 1000 volts really fast. for example, would 2 750 volt transistors in series be able to handle 1500 volts or not? just a HV pic from my old, dead NST

DIY Transistor?

Do you think it'd be possible to make a completely homemade transistor? Not a homemade transistor amp or anything, just the transistor. I know, you could just buy one for cents, but you can also just buy a lot of stuff that you can have fun making. What about turning a normal transistor into a phototransistor? Just sand the coating off the silicon?

Transistor Trouble

Hi there, I have been working on controlling a large toy car with a wireless receiver from a smaller toy car, the motors I need to control are rated for 9V but the receiver only outputs 3V, reversing polarity to reverse the motor. I made this schematic using transistors to handle the voltage, but when I built the circuit the transistors began to heat up and there was no output. I am not sure why this is happening, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Daniel

I found this transistor in an old genius ps2 mouse (the connection not play station!) it looks like any normal one i've searched google and data sheets searching for it nothing came with any information (one of them said this is a DC motor!) written on it: 536 f   1A exactly. so is it npn or pnp is it power,audio,or general purpose

MOSFET Transistor? Answered

Hey Instructables. I am working on a project requiring some MOSFETs but they have to be smaller than the Radioshack IRF510's (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062618). I think I found some ones that are smaller (http://www.jameco.com/1/1/195-bs170-transistor-bs170-n-channel-mosfet-60v-92.html), but do they have the same functionality? What I mean is, will they work the same way? I believe they will, since they are both labeled as N-Channel MOSFET Transistors, but its always good to check. Thanks in advance!

Transistor help

I got a 5M LED Light Strip. Its controller say it needs 12V 2A but each LED uses 20mA each and there are 300 in this strip which = 6A. I want to cut this strip into 4 segments and power each one using an arduino. 1 strip = 2.1A 2 strip = 1.26A 3 strip = 1.5A 4 strip = 1.14A =6A My question is do I need different transistors for each strip because of the difference in amperage or can I use the same one? Transistor vocoder?

Hello, last night i was experimenting with my breadboard, and i came up with an idea, transistors have a supply voltage, which the small voltage controls pitch and volume. but i thought what if i had voice coming in to the supply voltage part(after being super amplified) and the keyboard comes in the control voltage side, would the keyboard not control pitch of voice, while voice modulates? thanks for your help.

WHAT IS THE BEST SINGLE TRANSISTOR TO USE ON A FBT?

What types of good transistors are there that can take more than 36 volts input for driving FBT? I have a toshiba D2586 its good but dont work well above 20 volts I tried doubling my 18v input to 36v and it lasted only a few miliseconds altough it was big sparks, so is this a feedback or over spike return voltages problem  that it cant handle?can anyone tell me why this happens? and what solution there is? ty very much.

Transistor H-bridges

Is it possible to make a transistor H-bridge with PNP transistors or can it only be done with NPN transistors.  As far as my knowledge( or lack thereof) of transistors goes, I think it would be possible, but it would require more than 4 transistors and it would be much more complex, however I could be entirely wrong.  Any input would be helpful, thanks.

If I took 2 similar NPN transistors and connected both the bases together, both the collecters, and both the emitters, then put it into a circuit, what would the 2 transistors do? Would the maximum power dissipation be increased or something?

Transistor switching problem

I am having trouble using transistors to switch a some LEDs, I have 5 LEDs in parallel being switched by one transistor but each LED is indervidually switched by another transistor. I have given each LED its own resistor and the problem I am having is that when all LEDs are on each LED gets dimmer then if only one was on. I don't really understand why this is happening but I'm not 100% comfortable with transistors and I have probably done something stupid. I have attached a image of how I have wired it up with only two LEDs

Transistor Swithching Voltage? Answered

Looking at this data sheet: http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/stmicroelectronics/4136.pdf How much voltage has to be applied across the base and emitter to switch on a "TIP 3055" transistor? The V-be row is the only thing that looks like it is telling about that, but I don't think that's what I'm looking for (mabey it is?).

Hey Guys, I need some help, I need to choose a transistor and get to know how to wire it. audio amplifier transistor? Answered

I pulled what looked like a voltage regulator from a PSU, i guess as it turns out its not? apparently its a audio aplifier transistor, but what would that be doing in a PSU? if its any use, it was near a fan connector on a small sub-board... markings are: UTC 2SD880 (2 small, undistinguishable letters)RKOB (or 0B) i believe this is the datasheet, correct me if im wrong. http://search.alkon.net/cgi-bin/pdf.pl?pdfname=utc/2SD880_TO220.pdf

Alright, i know now that there is a way to modulate your voice from putting signal in on the voltage pin of a transistor, and controlling it with a synth into the input voltage. But now, what is that effect? and what is a way to smooth out or get clean sounds from it? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Resistors for a NPN transistor? Answered

In the circuit diagram(which I've uploaded),I intent to use a NPN transistor(BC 547) as a relay.The 9 VDC is stepped down to 5 VDC by a LM7805 and should be the trigger to the transistor,completing a circuit which needs the 9 VDC.The Collector is given the common negative of both the voltages and the trigger gets the positive 5VDC.I need a bit help to calculate R1 and R2.I had used two random resistors previously but the Load got powered by the 9 VDC even before the trigger was applied to the transistor.I figured out that the problem might be related to the resistors used. (I haven't included the caps used at the terminals of the regulator in the schematic)

Given the following schematic which takes a voltage of 12v and considers it off and a voltage of 2 volts and considers it on can someone tell me what changes would need to take place regarding capacitors and resistors (if any) to account for 20v instead of 12v? Meaning that when 20v is considered off and 2v is considered on.

How to select transistor?

Hi guys! How do you know which version of transistor to select when it comes to doing some projects? I mean, lets say i have all the parameters of my project, the output current and voltage, so how do you know which specific model of transistor to select from the data you have? Is there some kind of list from which we can select the required model from our data? For example, i have an LED array which draws about 90mA of current in total and has a total operating voltage of 15V, and from past instructables that i read on this site, i know that BC547 has a current rating of 100mA and can tolerate the voltages, so i can use it. My question is, that suppose i didn't read these instructables, then how will i know which transistor or FET i have to select that has a current rating of about 100mA and can tolerate the voltages(i.e how will i know that i can select the BC547 or alternative)? Also, when selecting a diode for example, i know from reading few instructables that 1n4007 has a rating of about 1A and can tolerate good amount of voltages. Suppose i don't know about the diode, then how will i know that based on my requirements, i can select the 1n4007 diode? This is an example in general, and it applies to all cases of load currents and voltages, and other semiconductor devices.

How to get rid of radio signal coming from my stereo? Answered

My stereo (sony micro hi fi component system cmt-ep707) consistently plays radio signals.  I get the radio signals when I am any setting other than the fm/am tuner. How could i get rid of the radio signals?  Is it something to do with the transistors? or the speaker cable being slightly exposed or something?

Methods for Powering 8 LEDs?

Hey Guys - My daughter has a small Little Tikes car which I'm adding 8 LEDs (3 per headlight & 1 per taillight) to. Each LED is a 2v 20ma. I've already started, but hit a snag. For testing the LEDs, I used a 9v battery with a 330ohm resistor on positive. This lit individual LEDs as well as 3 LEDs in parallel. My plan was to wire them all in sequentially then figure out what was needed resistor wise when done - bad decision. I have almost everything installed except power and now stuck as to what do do. Having 8 LEDs which are 2V / 20ma, exceeds the voltage a 9V battery can produce. Afraid to try connecting the 8 directly to 9V as don't want to risk burning them out. Just wanted to post to see what my best option would be - especially one where I wouldn't have to rewire everything again in parallel if at all possible. Thanks!

NPN to PNP control? Answered

So as I get into this project the circuit keeps building and now I once again have another problem that I can't figure out. As the title hopefully suggests I am using a NPN PN2222A trans. to control a PNP 2N3906 The idea was to use the 5v from a Ardinuo UNO to control a 12v. Currently I am testing with a 9v I had on hand. I thought it would pretty straight forward but every time I supply power to the NPN it creates the short needed to turn on the LED, but once I cut the power the LED stays on until I create another short (using a probe) uphill of the NPN. The only thing I can think of is that the LED doesn't the resistance needed for the power to re-saturated the PNP. Any thoughts? I will admit  haven't done any of the math needed yet for the resistors. Also can someone send me a link to the programs you use for drawing the layouts so I can move past MSpaint?
