How would you connect the wires from a USB (female) with wires that are red, black, green, and white, to a 5V boost regulator that only had three legs - Vin, Ground, Vout? It's not for a computer so I don't think we need the green and white wires, but I could be wrong. Which wire goes where? Thanks!

Usb male - male cable to connect 2 computer without a 'bride'
Would it be possible to buy a 4x AA battery relay from Radioshack and splice the output into a Micro USB cable to make a 6 volt emergency charger for a smartphone? Or do I need little electrical bits (resistors or somesuch) in between the output from the juice pack and the +5v pin on the USB? Thanks.

Hey i saw some videos on diy usb fan, thought it was a great idea, so i tried to make one too for funso i took my old broken logitech usb mouse and cut it open, however when i opened it i saw black, white, red, green, a string, and a copper wire - like the picture on the imageshack link (sorry for the blurr)http://img144.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00210dk5.jpgso i still only use the red and black wire right? and in what conditions should i not use the usb for powering (such as the product uses more than 500 milliamp?)and just out of curiosity does any1 know whats that copper wire with no shielding is for?thanks

I want to make a usb charger with 3 ports in which I can plug my laptop adaptor (16v, 2.5A)and charge my phone and other usb devices. I am planning to use a Lm-317 to regulate the voltage. Will it be fine or I need to consider something else also? And please don't tell me I can buy one!

I got a USB cable fro the dollar store today for, well, one dollar. I was wondering if there was a way I could control the voltage output from my computer. I stripped the cable (it was male to male), and tested the output with my multimeter, too. I am getting about 5vdc, is that normal? I thought I got more out of the USB port. Like I said, I was wondering about any opensource usb control program I could use to control the USB voltage. Is this even possible? Also, I can't program AT ALL, or understand it, either.(if it matters)

I am building a small crank-powered generator for a college electronics class that will power a USB port. I know a USB port supplies 5V DC, and that my generator will obviously produce AC current, but I'm not sure the best way to convert AC to DC, then how to step my voltage up to 5 volts. My generator uses 6 wire coils in a circular pattern. 12 neodymium magnet rotate over the coils. This doesn't seem like the most efficient design ever, but that part is a stock university kit, the wiring is up to me. I've only been able to test each coil at a time, and each one produces .5-.7 VAC. Do any electricians out there have some tips? When all is said and done, I'll definitely be posting an instructable on this.

I have probably asked enough dumb questions already but I think you could do this. I have an old TV remote control. If I would split it open and disconnect the IR and solder a USB cable to it would it work on the computer? (I would have put batteries in it too.) A program would control the remote.

I have a 1.2 V nimh battery and a 3.7V li ion (no protection circuitry) battery, which would add up to 4.9V if put in series. However, I want to turn it into a temporary USB power supply (5V) so ignoring all the things regarding putting 2 batteries of different capacities together, is there a way to kick the voltage up a tiny bit? I was thinking something like filtering the output of a joule thief, possibly. I also have a solar panel (4.5V, ???A) and was wondering if that could help, but I don't want to rely on it too much.

The circuit board has code like C, V, D and G. Now which one is for which wire? out of C,V,D and G which is for ground, which is for VCC and which is for Data+ and data- the color code of USB cable I know. But cannot understand which wire to connect which code (C,V,D,G) of circuit board?

I recently (2 hours ago) made a case for USB drive because the case "broke" off. Anyway, my main USB ports on the front are on the bottom, with a stiff port cover over them. This makes it virtually impossible to use my USB drive now, as I cannot fit it in the tight space. So I want to use one of my 4 ports on the back. My problem is that when I plug the USB drive in, it just will not recognize it. I tried it it in my mouse port, keyboard port, everything. I tried it with another USB drive to make sure I just didn't ruin my first one; it wouldn't recognize it either. Maybe I'm missing something, or being ignorant, but I can't seem to figure out why it won't recognize it, and what can be done about it. Is there some menu like in the Control Panel (though I checked) that enables the ports, or what? I really to have to go case-less. Thanks! Edit - I'm running Windows XP Home.

Hi, I am a very big noob to wiring. For a present, I wanted to make my cheap old AAA powered fm transmitter into a usb powered one. Thinking I was so smart, I cut up an old usb cord and soldered the red to positive and black to negative. It worked great until it started melting the transmitter. So I now I realize that usb is much more powerful than 2 AAAs. heh heh. I found this: www.instructables.com/community/USB-to-Travel-Clock-Circuit-Help-/ but it's a bit over my head. I'm assuming I need to get a capacitor or voltage divider but I could use a little help breaking it down into noob speak. Plus the transmitter is a little thing, 2 inches, is there a smaller way of checking the voltage? K, thanks bye!

Hello forums, I was wondering if anybody knew of a program that could do the following via USB. I have pet chickens that need feeding multiple times a day. I wanted to make a USB device that I could plug into my computer, and when I push a button in the program, it activates the USB port which is connected to my feeder. I don't need any help with making the feeder, it's just being able to run it on demand. Thanks in advance.

I have an AT&T USB internet card, with unlimited internet usage. I want to know how to set up a wireless connection in my home using the usb as the primary internet source, from my main computer. that way family or friends can just connect to the network from their laptops instead of using my computer, or me sticking the usb into each computer as needed (the thing cost 50 bucks for insurance LOL) I would like this to work like wi-fi if possible

I recently purchased a SparkFun iPod Breakout board http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8295I am currently trying to attach it to my computer via USB. I got a usb socket, and linked it up to the breakout, but when I plugged it into my computer the iPod begins to charge, but does not recognize it is connected to the computer. I have got the USB + to 32, USB GND to 16, USB D+ to 27 and USB D- to 25. I have checked all the connections, which are fine. I have even attached another USB cable to it (which I know works) and the same thing happens! In desperation I switched the data wires, but exactly the same thin The iPod works as normal with its original cordThe weird thing is that when I reboot the computer, the iPod recognizes the computer and goes into the 'Do Not Disconnect' screen, but as soon as the computer leaves the bios it goes back to charging. Any elite instructable members got any ideas?thanks
