Video Splitters

Does anyone know of any good, freeware, video splitters? I have some home videos that I converted to digital format (MPEG), but they are a good 2-3 hours long, per film. It takes forever to put them on my mp3 player. Most of the splitters I have seen only convert the first few minutes, then you have to buy the program. Any help would be appreciated!

Video Player

I dont know exactly what to call this. but i want some kinda device that i could make that plays movies off a hard drive, i no that they kinda mmake these already but there really expensive and i figure i could build something cheaper. ive got about 20 extra computers varing from MACs to PCs and ranging in all diffrent years, so i though of like building like a "DVR" without a tuner card or something. and the basic reason for this is so that i can bring large amounts of movies and vids to friends houses without hauling around tons of CDs or my PS3. i also like the way the XBox Mini looks

video composite spliter

Hi, i have 3 portable(car) monitors that take composite video signal in, the deal is i want to link them all together to the same source.. Can i simply daisy chain them(parallel) or do i need some kind of amplifier to do the trick? If so, please provide a tutorial/instructable on how to make one.. The source can be s-video, vga, or any standard computer video analog output.. i'm not saying dvi or hdmi interface due to the fact D/A conversions being not that simple(for me)..(but please provide the schematics anyway) I'm sorry for my terrible english x) Best regards, Fábio Santos.

Video camera advice?

So, I've been using my ancient camera to film craft videos for a while now, but I'm hoping to invest in something better - but I'm not sure what. I was hoping to invest in a DSLR that shoots video, but since my budget is pretty tight, I'm thinking of cutting my losses and getting a low-end camcorder. Does anyone have any advice for me in this regard? I'm hoping to get something in the region of $200 or less (student budgets are tough), but that films good quality video of relatively small things, such as small DIY projects. A local tech store has the Canon LEGRIA HF-R36 on special, so I was thinking of trying that, but I don't really want to rush into this.

Embedded video solutions

I'm working on a project that requires the playing of short videos based on some physical conditions. The microcontroller and more general electronic end of stuff I'm fine with. What I haven't yet figured out is the mechanics of the video player mechanism. I want to use digital video stored on removable media (preferably CF or similar memory card storage). The videos will have no sound, be black & white, and probably low resolution (640x480 being the max size). I had originally planned to use an embedded linux system (gumstix verdex or some such thing) hooked to a TFT display. With some software running on the computer, it shouldn't be hard to control with serial communication. However, I'm not sure how well (if at all) mplayer would run on the Verdex. Also, if there's a cheaper solution I'd rather take that. I guess this post is to see what my options are. I know there are mp3 decoders on a chip (like the STA013) that produce output that you feed more or less directly into a DAC. Is there such a thing as a hardware mpeg video decoder (or divx, or quicktime, or avi, or whatever?) If something like that existed, I could connect the CF reader straight through my uC to the hardware decoder and pipe it out directly. Either to LCD or CRT (depending on which signal is easier). So, does this exist? Is it feasible? Thanks,

Music Video Help?

Me and my friends are making a music video for a class we chose the song "A Dirge For The Underground" by Attica! Attica! We have most of it  done, but we are having problems with the last shot, we are doing of an explosion (not with actual bombs, just implying there are bombs). We don't mean like Die Hard, Action Movie, Jump to the Ground at the last second explosion, but the explosions you traditionally see when a building explodes, lot of smoke and debris as opposed to fire and a slightly sooty hero/heroine. It's just going to be blowing a lot of immediate debris and smoke blowing outward and then smoke drifting up. Best idea we've had so far is rent a big ass fan and set up a temporary business of cleaning out fires lol. We unfortunately do not have access to the media lab so digital effects are unfortunately not an option. Any better ideas (that don't damage the location, the owner would be pisssssssssssssed)?

Video projection on glass?

Hi I was doing some resources on how to achieve a rear projection on transparent surfaces like glass, but without of much success (there are projects on this site, but all are using a black projection material). I would like to do it on a shop window using a projector. I have found out that I need some special foil to get this working, but most of them are black and not transparen and there are a lots of brands. I am wondering if there would be a DIY solution, maybe a frosted white sticker cut to the size would work, to still keep a level of transparency on of the window. Suggestions are welcomed! Thanks!

video projector won't work Answered

Hello, I have been trying to get a Sanyo Multiverse to work with a 20w chip LED. I may have tricked it's motherboard it into thinking it is powering a bulb. The projector stays on instead of turning off when the bulb was missing. I put the led chip where the bulb was, and turned on the LED on. I saw a yellow light. If I tilt the chip inside the light housing, it will change the colors projected. I could not get a change in color as I pressed buttons like menu or input. Is the lcd not getting a signal? The LCD wires are plugged in all the way.

What video card to buy? Answered

My old graphics cards died (two 8600 GT's in SLI), so now I need a replacement.  I've narrowed it down to either a GTX 260 or a Radeon 5000 series card, basically I can't decide whether Direct X 11 is worth it or not.  I've always been a fan of nVidia and I'd prefer to stick to their cards, but if I can get the same performance for the same amount of money with an ATI card w/ DX11 then I'd probably go with ATI.  My (original) price limit was $150, but since there isn't jack for that much, I've bumped it to $200.  I'd prefer not to go over that.  So how does the Radeon 5000 series compare to the GTX 200 series (within my price range)? Also, is DX11 worth it? My PC's specs: OCZ 550 Watt PSU (50 amps total on the 12v rails, 2 X 25A) Core 2 Duo E6850 Asus P5N-E SLI mobo 2 GiB DDR2 800 Mhz RAM 3 7200 RPM SATA drives The usual DVD drive A fairly crappy 16" CRT (1280x1024) Vielen Dank!

Camcorder won't record video?

I have recently come into possession of a HDD JVC hard disk camcorder. I got it from a friend who asked if I would fix it for him, so I told him I would ask around. Any comments are much appreciated. It works great! Except it doesn’t record video, it has great sound quality and a handful of cool features. I've already taken it to the store and was told it would be around $200 or more to get it fixed, when I asked what was wrong with it i didnt get a responce from the man at the store. If anyone has any idea what’s happening or how to fix it without spending $200 I would much appreciate it! More thoughts on Video-Only Instructables

Hello, not that I am unable to view videos on instructables, but more and more instructables are simply a video, sometimes with two sentences, sometimes not even that. Not that I dislike video tutorials and such, but many people still have low bandwith, or (like me) can not turn on the sound all the time since it would bug other people. Also sometimes it is more usefull to read instructions, steps and technical data. Plus there might be deaf people interested in some project but unable to understand all steps due to the fact some videos will depend on audio explanation only. My two cents: Include a minimum text length check for instructables. Video only should be youtube or such, not Instructables.
