Exoskeleton Helps the Paralysed Walk

Exoskeletons frequently hit the news as projects to make super-soldiers, but a new, more slimline version has bee built by Israeli company Argo Medical Technologies. Inspired by the paralysis of one of their own engineers, ReWalk allows wearers to walk, use stairs, stand and sit.The wearer switches between "modes" with a tap on a wrist-pad, then controls the actual motion by shifting their upper body-weight. For instance, they would hit "stand", then lean forward to make the ReWalk straighten its exo-legs. The device is much more streamlined than some other systems, run from a very flat pack-pack, and can be worn all day, but is only suitable for paralysis victims who still have good control of their arms and shoulders.ReWalk seems much simpler and lighter than other exoskeletons, but that seems to be because the designers have not tried to replace the entire walking function - balance is still down to the wearer, using crutches, but I imagine practice could reduce that to sticks, or even a single stick.Weight and fitness seem to be factors as well - the man in the video is was an Israeli paratrooper, injured on duty, and there are no shots of the rather portly wheel-chair-bound inventor wearing the ReWalk, but I think you'll agree it would still be a major benefit to an awful lot of people. This video is in German, but shows more shots of the exoskeleton, and has clips of the designer discussing his project.

Walking/Marquee effect for LED Strip

I'm trying to achieve a "walking-type" effect also called marquee-effect using individually wired LEDs, so that it seems the lights are moving from one end to the other. Here's a video for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4g2NFQps1g It is easy enough if we have repetition every 3 LEDs. But my restriction is that I have repetition every 2 LEDs. The circuit is something like the one in the diagram(pardon my MS Paint skills): Every other RGB LED is connected together.  One simple way to provide the effect is to show color1 in LEDs at odd position and color2 in LEDs at even positions and then switch them. This is different from a similar effect in cheap fairy lights as I can set the color and intensity of the LEDs besides just on/off... Here is a GIF of my attempt of simple color switching with an addressable LED strip for now: In this, I cannot set any direction of travel and the effect depends on using a bit of imagination... Although it might seem difficult to provide a good effect with just 2 color channels, I want an opinion if it is possible or not?

Dutch Robot "Flame" Walks Like a Human

Via PhysorgThis robot uses the same way humans walk, but actually falling forward. "PhD student Daan Hobbelen has demonstrated for the first time that a robot can be both energy-efficient and highly stable. His breakthrough came in inventing a suitable method for measuring the stability of the way people walk for the first time. This is remarkable, as ‘falling forward’ is traditionally viewed as an unstable movement. To watch Flame in action click here (WMV, 5.25MB).Next he built a new robot with which he was able to demonstrate the improved performance: Flame. Flame contains seven motors, an organ of balance and various algorithms which ensure its high level of stability."Robots that can chase us flesh-bags down to power themselves are now one step (pardon the pun) closer. w00t!

How to make a person appear to walk in Adobe Flash cs5?

I was wondering what would be the best way to make a stick figure appear to walk in flash? and it would move using key presses? If anything i figure id make a movie clip of said person walking and then use the key press code snippet and delete the up/down keys and then have it play the movie clip when its pressed and stop when its released? So would that work? if not what would be the best way to do this?

RFID lap counting and timing system for school walking club?

My elementary school has a weekly walking and jogging club. It would be nice to have an "automated" system to tally the laps and times each week. I do NOT want a commercial option, and hope to partner with the neighborhood Middle School tech elective to create the system. In a perfect world, I'm hoping another user has created a system like this and could share their tips (even if for remote control cars) or an instructable. There might even be a way to use an entry system that records the times.

Looking for a type of switch

Hi People of Instructables! I hope I am posting in the right place. I am looking for a switch that when you walk pass a point it shuts off and when you walk the other way past that point goes back on.   For example... I have a flash-light in my hand, when I walk through a doorway into a house the light turns off.  I go through the doorway the other way (to the outside) the light turns on. Conditions: It has to be able to do this through cloth as the flashlight could be in my pocket. It can only work when you walk through the doorway but not when standing near the doorway Does anything like this exist?  if yes what is it called? I have been searching the 'net and not been successful as I don't have a clue what I am looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading my post! TheLastPrincess

The device would start at one manhole, and walk to the next manhole, recording the slope, distance and, as mentioned, circular-ness of the pipe. Max range required is 120 metres. D oes not necessarily require video, but some sort of info recording that can be read once it appears at its destination manhole. Thanks ...jim

how do i connect DC devices to my DC generator?

I got an old treadmill with a blown board, stripped out all the electronics ( kept it) with the intention of using the treadmill as a generator only - knowing that the engines are good - the engine is rated to 180VDC, and i have so far at a nice easy walk noted 100VDC on my multimeter hooked directly up to the terminals. it seems clear to me when i plug my 24v fan in and walk that while it spins well and faster the faster i walk - it doesnt need 100vdc and will probably blow eventually - so i must need a voltage regulator?>> or the like.... 1.) how to make / buy one easily? 2.) can i charge car battery from it - do i need any kind of regulation/ charge controller  if i was doing that - am i correct in believing the more load i wire in ( perhaps on a sliding scale or some kind of switch) the more resistance will be generated to the walker? thanks - will

Why doesn't my MX-FS-03V / MX-05V 433MHz trick work? Answered

This is for someone who has balance problems, only needs a walking cane during an episode, and can physically walk away from the cane quite a distance before it's actually needed (oops). The idea is to attach the transmitter (no arduino) to a walking cane, and have receiver + [small] arduino + buzzer in a pocket/bag. Transmitter is pretty dumb: I connect gnd or vcc to data (whichever works best). The idea is to figure out how the receiver behaves when there's no transmition (high, low, or random) and choose to transmit whatever distinctively says "I'm alive" :) The receiver setup (at the moment) simply connects one of the rx pins (there are 2) to an analog input on an arduino, samples it in a loop and blurts it to Serial. Now when I simulate the input with "native" gnd or vcc, it says 0 or 1023 like it should, but when I connect the receiver, it's quite erratic. Not as random as sampling a brick, but not any more useful. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Servos going crazy? Answered

So, I made this https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-A-Simple-Bidepal-Humanoid-Robot/ and after uploading the code for walking, instead of walking, the robot goes crazy https://vimeo.com/209730331 I have attached some pins a bit different from the original code but have adjusted that in the code by changing the attach commands. What do you guys think is the problem? I attached the horns to the servo using this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOCagSi1OOU The other codes provided also don't appear to be working. Could it be that I have attached the servos to arduino the wrong way? I considered the right motor to be the motor which appears at the right when  the robot is viewed from the back (white part of arduino).

Looking to trigger a handheld "buzzer" using a motion detector, any advice?

Hey everyone! I am currently working on a project that would allow my employees to be alerted once somebody walks through our doors, without annoying anyone (so a bell is out of the question, haha). My idea is to have a motion detector above the door, and once someone walks through it, a handheld buzzer will go off (to alert my employees). I'm thinking that I'll need a PIR sensor, a vibration motor, possibly a micro-controller(?), and some kind of power source. Something I'm struggling with is finding a way to trigger the buzzer, without being physically connected to the PIR sensor. What do you guys think? P.S. Please excuse my lack off knowledge, as I'm more of a software guy ;)

need help with design/placement of actuator or similar to raise and lower trailer gate.

My dad lost his leg but walks with a prosthesis he also only has use of 1 arm. What we are trying to do is make it so he can raise and lower his trailers gate using one simple control. He uses the trailer to transport his scooter which he rides when he cant walk long distances. Right now i have a hand powered boat winch going from the fender to the gate but its difficult to operate. What id like to do is use an actuator or something similar and have it powered by his wiring harness or even a battery on the trailer with a solar charger. I cant wrap my head around the design and placement atm so im asking for help. this is basically the same trailer model http://tinyurl.com/c32dlw
