PSU shorting out when trying to power stuff? Answered

i'm trying to build a bench top psu from a computer psu and so far its going good, except for one thing. I recently scrounged a 12v air compressor from a buggered car battery jump starter, and it runs fine, but whenever i connect it to the 12v and ground cables on the psu the psu just shuts itself off, does anyone know why? or what i can do to stop it from doing it?

Your compressor is probably drawing >>10 A at start up !!

Stop connecting the compressor to the PSU.
The compressor is designed to run off a 12V car-battery, which will handle heavy current, the PSU isn't suitable.

If you stripped out a transformer & rectifier from the PSU it would not shut off, but might possibly burn...

Whats the rating on the compressor motor. It may be pulling more amps then the PSU can offer. Thus tripping the over current protection in the PSU.

Measure the resistance of the motor windings.
