What kinds of contests do YOU want to see on Instructables? Answered

Hi everyone! As we're planning contests for the next year, we wanted to get suggestions and feedback on the types of contests we're running. :D

Is there a contest we ran years ago you'd like to see again?
Any contests you're sick of?
A weekly challenge you'd like us to expand on?
Do you want the contests to be more specific or more open ended?

We're trying to shake things up in contest-land - so any and all suggestions are welcome! I'm especially interested in what types of tech contests you guys would like to see, as well as ideas for food contests.

P.S. For anyone wondering about weekly challenges - we're still trying to figure out a way to do it that makes it easy for you guys to enter and easy for the editors here to run. But I promise we are discussing it! :)

Have prize suggestions? Check this topic.
Want to get a preview of some of our upcoming contests?

Either another instructables book contest or a be nice to strangers challenge would be fun!

This may be a bit open or too large scale but what about a contest of contests where everyone comes up with contest ideas and makes something that fits that contest. It may need some more narrowing down than that because it could get very broad very quickly but it may generate some new ideas.

How about a contest making things to help our wildlife cope with their ever shrinking natural habitat. Things like homes for possums, birds, bats, frog ponds etc, you get the picture.
Feeders as well, anything that helps them to survive.

"no advanced tools" contest. Many authors, including myself, are using advanced machinery such as 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC and so on. Not everyone can afford or have them, so I guess, some simple contest like "Show your best while using only hand tools" would be great, as it will be much more easy others to repeat it.

We've run a few Hand Tools Only Contests now. Keep your eye open for the next time we do it :)

Have we ever done an engines contest? I would go all-out for that one.

‘Automatons and complex mechanisms’ (no need for electronic control) would be challenging, but interesting to explore.

‘Playing with food’ or some other mix food with projects mashup concept could unite the culinary and the mechanical/electronic sides of the author community

I can’t remember seeing a ‘high voltages’ contest, but think there must have been... would be Teslas Jacobs ladders, and Wimshursts galore!

‘Grabbing attention’ might be a fun topic. Broad ways of interpreting, could be intricate fancy things, loud noises, bright colours, LEDs or pyrotechnics

I'd like to do a soft robotics contest, but I am not sure it would get enough participation.

Would anyone else out there want to participate in this?

How about a 'keep it simple' contest. Projects that are very simple to make, yet are very useful.

I'm not sure we would do this because there are so many contests that we are currently planning to run that you could potentially enter hacked devices into.

That would be hilarious
for example 30 steps to sharpen a pencil without using any sharp object.
like somebody using a whetstone to sharpen a pencil

A long time ago we had a Chindogu Challenge (the art of the unusueless invention). I don't remember how that one went. I will look that up later and mull this over.

Doing Trash to Treasure, where the emphasis is on using old stuff not buying a load of things to put in old stuff. I see a lot of entries where it mentions ordering items like electronics or 3D printing parts. Surely that defeats the point?

Like many of us, I have been involved in various non-profit organizations - all of which have required creative fundraising ideas. I think a 'fundraising' Instructable would be a great way to generate and share ideas for those of us looking for ways to raise money for great causes.

Do you remember, ages ago, the contest to create projects with specific titles?

That's how I ended up writing my highest-viewed project, so maybe we could try that again?

Also voting for that! I have drafted an impressive, 32 voice polyphony synth keyboard, which uses single, less than $2 cost IC for that :)
