sony have some of the best around, we have a sony dsc-h9 with 15x optical zoom and 8.1 mega pixels. it has a infa red night shoting mode for film and cammera , pic and film qaulity are excelent. we sent away and got for free a bloody great stand for it. i have checked the net and mags to see how it rates and it better than most. it worth about $1000 here in newzealand so should be close to your budget in the US. if you want to see the film qaulity see glassspider66 acount in you tube and our explosions :)dont 4get to rate :) films as good as a basic digital vid cammera but photo quality is so much better. it has so many functions and shooting modes as to be a littel confusing to start with but well worth learning. i feel like a pro every time i pull it out of the bag :) some cammeras need specilist software that you need to pay more for but this one is good on its own, should you want more if you buy the cammera give me your email and we would be happy to send you cracked programs or links if you think you need them. i love this cammera and it rates high with consumer mags so im shore you would be happy with it. good luck n happy hunting :))
