I have this happen quite often. a key gets stuck down, not really look like it but stuck down enough that the pc wouldn't completely load.
While replacing the keyboard is really the best thing to do or you can try my trick. Swipe the keyboard keys from one end to the other, pressing all the keys as you do it. I do it fairly fast so a key has a chance to pop up.

If you are hearing any clicks, back up what you've got because your hard drive is likely about to give up the ghost. Thankfully they are a cheap replacement but anything on it is usually gone.

How old is the system? Particularly how old is the HDD in the system? It could be the HDD is having some issues. Be it a corrupted sector or it is on it's last legs. If the drive is more than 5 years old chances are it's got corrupted sectors and may be on it's way out. In which case it's time to buy a new HDD, reinstall windows and set the old drive up as a secondary drive and hope you can pull the files you need off if it and onto the new drive. That is if you haven't been keeping regular backups of your data.

HDD is a 2003 Maxtor diamondmax pluss 9 120GB ATA / 133 3.5 series. And your probably right about it being on it's last leg. Reason being it actually belonged to a member of the family that is no longer with us.i also do not think it was ever registered because i had to get around that and the passwords also. i do think it needs re installed as u suggested it was acting funny prior to to this. i have put it in another compaq persario as a second drive it again did not function. so i believe i'll do as u said and find an xp disk to re install. thanks so much. T.

Did you try to update it to service pack 3? And does it have an AMD processor? If the answer to both of those is yes then you have a problem that comes from the service pack that is incompatible with AMD processors. You need to get a patch from Microsoft BEFORE you upgrade to SP3. Fixing it afterwards is a bit difficult.
