I think it helps to write mixed fractions including the addition operator (the plus sign) explicitly, like so:
-(1 + 5/6) + (5 +1/3) = ?
= -1 -5/6 +5 +2/6 [substitute 2/6 =1/3 ]
=-1+5 + (-5/6 +2/6) [add integer parts and fraction parts separately]
=4 + (-3/6)
=4 - 1/2 [substitute -1/2=-3/6 ]
= 3 + 1 -1/2 [substitute 3+1 = 4 ]
= 3 +1/2

OR
1 5/6= 11/6
5 1/3 = 16/3 or 32/6
32/6-11/6=21/6= 3.5
