Is this a standard or auto, i'm getting mixed signals and it makes a difference. If it's a manual check the oil like @canucksgirl said below and say a prayer because it's probably your syncros and that means a rebuild. If it's an auto it is possible some of the electronics like the neutral safety switch. There is a slim chance that it's your linkage.

Does it go into the gear but just pop back out or does it refuse to go in at all? If you hold the shifter in a gear, say 3rd, does it stay and work properly? Have you noticed any slipping ( you push the gas, the engine revs normally but doesn't move forward, or backwards).

It will, or it won't?
I'm not sure what the question is.

There's a slim chance that its only low on tranny oil, so check that first. If the level is within limits, then your transmission has lost those gears, and its broken. You'll need an overhaul repair or a replacement (unfortunately). There really isn't a DIY for this unless you are a mechanic with a shop to handle such a repair. (Been there, done that). Sorry.

If by some slim chance it is low on tranny oil, you should get it serviced and find out why. The oil will likely need to be changed, along with the filter (especially if its been a number of years or miles). The shop should also check for any leaks.
