2nd Scholarship proposal: Tool fetcher Answered

I'd like to add another idea to my original entry for the scholarship contest.

The idea is for a robot to assist car mechanics in fetching and returning their tools. With the low-profile of the irobot system, I think it would be ideal for this task. The robot could have a voice- recognition system that would listen for commands from the mechanic and fetch or return a tool for them.
The system could have a mat (see illustration) which the robot could drive to and place the tools in their specific spot.
If a voice-recognition system would be infeasible, then a key pad with a magnetic back could attach to the bottom of the car.
I believe the robot could carry the tools via an electromagnet system.

With this system, the mechanic could safely keep the underside of the car free from clutter.

Thanks for the ideas, they're both really good. I think it would still be funner to try my other idea, but I guess that's up to the scholarship judges.

If you just used some small trays, and assign a number to each one, you could have something slide into something else, to pick up the tray, and bring it to you. This would be useful other things too, not just tools.

. I like this one. Not sure many car mechanics would go to the trouble of learning how to use it, but it's an excellent project. . I can see where getting the robot to understand "a half inch ratchet and a three-quarter inch socket" might be troublesome, but not impossible. . If you are using a tool bin/mat where the tools are always in the same place, I don't think the "identifier code" will be necessary. Just have one marker for the 'bot to line up on (or use the IR beacon) and use dead reckoning. It would be a very nice feature if you plan on using multiple or random sized bins/mats.
