I need a start-stop button for Windows Media Player

New to the forum so if an inappropriate post i apologize in advance. I am looking for or to build a simple device that will allow me to start and stop windows media player. Right now I have a simple batch file that opens windows media player in the full screen modes and plays a single video in the playlist. When it is finished it runs taskkill and closes. I use a wireless mouse to access the desktop icon that triggers the batch file. I would like to have a device that is plugged in with USB or wireless and has two buttons. One to start the video and one to stop it if I need to end it before it is finished. Ideally they would be big buttons labeled Go and Stop or colored Green and Red. I want children to be able to operate this computer. Does anyone have a clue if this exists in some form already or if it would be difficult to create? Thanks nerdoboy

New Sport!! Combine Golf with Archery!

I have an idea for a new sport. If you combine golf with archery, you'd get Golfery! The concept is simple with only some minor modifications. Arrowheads now have a golf ball or ping-pong ball for a head. To get a hole in one, the player must hit the flagpole in the pocket. There are (3) 1 foot wide rings concentrically spaced around the flagpole. Inner ring = 1 stroke, middle = 2 strokes, outer = 3 strokes. If the arrow lands outside of the outer ring, the player must pick up the arrow and gently toss it underhand towards the pocket. Other than that, the standard rules of golf are followed. I don't have the equipment to test out my ideas. If someone here would try it out and PM me with the results and any suggestions that would be great.

LED control via a reed switch and SCR

N00b question: I've got an RGB LED that has a forward voltage of 3.7v and a 3.7v battery pack. I want to trigger the LED to light via a magnet and reed switch. If I wire the reed switch to the gate of the SCR and have the SCR power the LED, will I be able to turn the LED on and off via the magnet by bringing the magnet near the reed switch?

IR Cake.

Hello, Some friends asked my wife to do a birthday cake for a girl of eight years. With her ‹age she is crazy about princesses. Well, what came to mind was that despite having done many projects with Arduino i had never applied electronics in a cake. So we decided to join forces and add some light (RGB LED) and movement (DC motor controlled with an L298) to the cake. Here is the link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmL1nR2-uEQ&feature;=youtu.be

Movement simulator platform

We are in search for ideas and/or off-the-shelf solutions for a mobility and toileting issue in response to the following request: "The project proposal is called a \"Movement Simulation Platform\" which is intended to provide amazing sensory experiences for our students who would not be easily accessible to them otherwise.  The idea is to have the students pushed onto a large platform in their wheelchairs in front of a large screen (screen not part of project request).  On the screen will play some fantastic scenes such as hiking up a mountain, visiting different countries, driving a car, riding a roller coaster, etc.  The platform will also allow for very minor movements in all directions through the assistance of the adult holding the wheelchair (also standing on the platform).  We are imagining a very small displacement of movement in all directions (similar to a rocker board).  The platform would need to be a good size with borders and possibly a way to secure the wheelchair to the platform." Where to find salvagable materials (working or non-working) when there are no salvage yards?

Pardon me if I'm in the wrong forum place to ask, but I don't know where else to look where I live for odds and ends for projects. Short version first--what common places or facilities should I check for cool parts for stuff? To add detail, I am new here but routinely follow this site now and especially the Steampunk category, though this applies to any made thing that has extra things to "look cool".  Ok so if I want old parts or things to represent or look like old  or other things, I would think to check at a scrapyard, salvage center, flea market and Ebay.  My problem is that in my region, there seem to be no salvage yards, only recycling centers that buy specific junk.  Ebay gets expensive and is specific enough to not have any wholesale or discount by volume situation.  I live near the state capital so our flea market is as good as I will get and it hasn't been useful yet. I have read instructables a number of times in which the author writes something like, "I was lucky to find this piece at a local junkyard" or something like that. Am I missing good options to find old or "junk" parts that have junk prices?

Ottobock Kimba iPad Stand

We are in search for ideas and/or off-the-shelf solutions for an iPad stand issue in response to the following request: My daughter Talie uses an iPad daily both at school for educational purpases and at home to keep her occupied during g-tube feedings. Right now her iPad sits on the tray of her wheelchair (Ottobock Kimba) and she bends over it as she prefers to use her lip and nose causing her neck and back pain. We would love to have a stand that would hold her iPad at face level so she can use it without bending over. Or alternatively, an adapted stylus that can be attached to her nose or chin. All of the commercial stands we have seen would not be stable enough for her use. She has very high tone and her movements are rapid and jerky. She needs something that would allow her to tap the screen without the iPad moving or falling over. Her OT at school fabricated a mouth stick for her but she gets tired of holding it in her mouth and when she puts it down to talk she cannot retrieve it. Headpieces with stylus' are much too big for her little head. Happy to hear your ideas! 90 per page "favorites"

I was just wondering if it would be possible to make the page of the "favorites" so that the people could choose to see 90 favorites instructables per page (like when you look at the "recent" instructables page, for example). I was thinking about this because I have many "favorites" and it really take long time to arrive to my last page (with only 15 instructables displayed per page)....or maybe be able to organize them in diy folders (food, bike, wood...). I don't have really any knowledge in computer so I' m not sure about how much work this will take...

Display website outside on a large LED/LCD Monitor

I want to be able to display a webpage on to a large monitor. (so people can view the site when they are outside for example) The website would update in real time (ajax based) but is essentially pretty basic just some images and text (no flash)/simple design. I have had a bit of a look around at supplier sites and most seem to have their own system where you can add in images/videos to display, or a program where you can input data yourself. I was looking at was something like Samsung smart TV but I think this is to good for what I need as I want to keep the price down, or Opera TV but I am not sure if I am looking in the right direction. I don't really want to have a lap top connected to this device (and be connecting via a cable) ideally you could talk to the device via a smartphone over wireless/bluetooth. I don't know where to start but I reckon if someone could point me in the right direction here I could make my idea happen?

Wanted: Instructable for Indoor Solar Chimes

I love the ingenious people on this site and am hoping some one can help me with this.  I have desperately tried to find an indoor solar chime like the one in the photo, but the manufacturer is out of business and other imitations are simply poorly made - unsteady curled metal base, only three wimpy cheap chimes, and mostly plastic. Can any creative, engineering minded soul help me out by writing an instructable for a similarly sturdy, aesthetically pleasing, (ceramic perhaps), resonating-5-toned solar chime like the one in the photo? The premise seems pretty basic - sun hits small solar panel creating vibrations which swing pendulum like mechanism which hits chimes and creates a gentle pleasing sound. I just have I would be very grateful if someone, more knowledgeable than me, would take on the challenge or at least shoot me some ideas on how this can be created!!  TIA

HELP! With Arduino coding.

Im working on a project to link 2 radios to make an em-comm repeater. I need the Arduino to preform the duty of the controller, and turn the transmitter on when a signal is received. I have all the sensors figured out, i just need help on the code, which il include at the end. if anyone can help, your name will be given kudos in the instructable, and will have my eternal gratitude! The entire project only takes up 4 digital pins, which are the receiver senseor(sensePin), the transmiter key(trigPin), the busy led(busyPin) and the ready led(readyPin). The idea is that when sensePin reads a HIGH state when a signal is received, it will set trigPin to HIGH, keying the transmitter, and set busyPin to HIGH, activating the BUSY indicator. At the end of this proccess, i would need a 3-5 second delay before the standby/ready sequence. When sensePin is read as LOW, trigPin & busyPin would be set LOW and readyPin would be set HIGH, activating the READY indicator. #define sensePin 13 #define trigPin 12 #define busyPin 11 #define readyPin 10 void setup() { pinMode(trigPin, OUTPUT); pinMode(busyPin, OUTPUT); pinMode(readyPin, OUTPUT); pinMode(sensePin, INPUT); } void loop() { if(sensePin, HIGH){digitalWrite(trigPin, HIGH); digitalWrite(busyPin, HIGH); digitalWrite(readyPin, LOW); delay(5000);} else {digitalWrite(trigPin, LOW); digitalWrite(busyPin, LOW); digitalWrite(readyPin, HIGH);} if(sensePin,LOW){digitalWrite(trigPin, LOW); digitalWrite(busyPin, LOW); digitalWrite(readyPin, HIGH);} else {digitalWrite(trigPin, HIGH); digitalWrite(busyPin, HIGH); digitalWrite(readyPin, LOW);}} If anyone can figure this out, like i said,i would be eternally greatful!

I've mentioned it before, but now is almost the time: I'm going to CERN on Monday, for most of the week. It's actually a professional development session (I'm supposed to be getting inspired to produce inspiring teaching materials), so it's not a jolly, honest. Anyhoo, bizarrely, in the birthplace of the internet*, wifi internet access is apparently quite unreliable there, so I may not be around as much as you are used to. I'll be spending the time in a days-long nerdgasm instead. (*it involved physicists being too lazy to cycle between work stations)

Why does electricity cause sparks?

Hi everyone! Why does electricity cause sparks? I have two scenarios in my mind, and i hope someone can provide me good answers. 1) I have seen on a lot of occasions, for instance the main transformers near my home, the wires sometimes keep sparking near the area where the wires are joined to it. Why does it spark? What is actually happening? And i do know that it might be caused by an overload or a short-circuit or stuff, i am not talking about what caused the sparking, but what is happening when one occurs. Why not just burst into flames, or heat red hot like a metal filament or something? 2) I have also observed sparks when, lets say i suddenly pull out the plug from the socket with the switch still ON, or sometimes even when i turn ON/OFF a switch driving a load. Why does this occur?

SyntaxError: Unexpected token

Hi all, I'm currently in the process of creating my first step-by-step, and along with this messing things up for me, I am now unable to edit one of my steps. I haven't uploaded any pictures to it (yet), nor have I used any unusual characters (I think - I can see a preview of what the step would look like by going to 'full preview', so I screenshotted that, below). All the other steps function perfectly edit wise. When I try to select the step, I get the 'SyntaxError: Unexpected token' message, and it freezes the java interface. I am running Chrome Version 24.0.1312.57 on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. I can't provide a link to it, as it's not published yet, but if an admin can see my as yet unpublished projects, it's step 1 ('Go Forth and Gather!'). This is the url that is present, however, when the message appears, if it is of any use:  https://www.instructables.com/id/edit/?instructableId=EWN0KQBHCV928LP#instructableId=EWN0KQBHCV928LP,stepId=SUMX8FLHCV928LO I am unaware as to what I was doing when it became uneditable - I had edited it multiple times, then moved on to write more steps. I then came back and was unable to progress. It isn't completely essential to me publishing the step-by-step; however, I would like to make a few changes. Cheers, S.

coin cell battery

Question about flashing red LED: I have a simple circuit--switch, battery, resistor, LED. Today, when I clicked the switch on, the LED came to life very slowly, as of it were fading in. I have never seen this behavior before. Is it the battery? (3V, 2032 coin cell and 100ohm resistor). Thanks.

How to make a Cheap HDR Light Probe for Compositing

Wal-Mart has 8 inch Silver Christmas balls for sale right now for about $2.50 Find one with a smooth paint job and relatively few ripples on at least one side. Using masking tape and plastic to mask off half of the ornament, spray paint the other half with auto primer. Mount on a dowel. This is as cheap as it's going to get, so I'd hop on it if I were you!

I miss the thumbnail step-by-steps

I just want to grip how I miss the pop out thumbnails that used to be at the top of the page. I really don't like clicking over and over with next or view all just to see the video or finished "toy" on the last step.

How to Identify or Measure Inductance?

I am gathering the parts for an ible, but I am short one part: a 12mH inductor.I can spot some inductors in electronic garbage - the wire coiled around a ferrite loop - but there are also solid state inductors. Plus, the inductors are not usually labelled with their values. How can I measure the inductance of an inductor with a volt-meter and an ammeter, but without access to a sine-wave generator? Is there some simple trick that would get me "close enough" to the true value? What would be really useful (but probably doesn't exist) is a chart or formula where you plug in the size of the core and the number of turns around it and out pops the inductance value. ?

Charging camera flash capacitors from mains supply

Hi everyone, I have a quick question about charging some capacitors.  I'm trying to make a very simple ignition system using capacitors from disposable camera flash circuits.  I'm planning on using maybe 5 or so.  They are rated at 330V and 120uF.  If I were to hook them up in parallel, so that i have a total of ~600uF, could I use a full-wave bridge recifier diode to turn the AC into DC and simply charge it like that without anything else in the circuit.  I don't know how to explain this very well so I attatched a schematic so you can see what I'm talking about.  Any help is much appreciated.. P.S. Ignore the fact that the full-wave rectifier looks messed up, Circuitlab.com doesn't have a f-w r symbol.  Thanks again!
