Phase Cancellation to Prevent Feedback

The Grateful Dead's wall of sound prevented feed back by having two mics for each vocalist with one of the mics 180° out of phase of the other. Then mixing both mics on the same channel. So the only information that wasn't canceled was the voice.  This gave me an idea. I took a handset and added a mic facing backward from the existing mic. Then wired the second mic out of phase. Apparently there's more to it electrically then just wiring the other mic backwards because the handset went dead. Is this possible with just parts salvaged from old phone equipment?

Steampunk Playstation One

Last Friday I was looking through some of my old stuff when I found my old PS1. I was wanting to try doing a case mod on an old NES but i thought this could be a bit more fun. Anyway after brainstorming some ideas for designs I settled on a steampunk-like style. So far this is about all I have done. But to explain what I'm going to do to it just mouse over the pics--\/ Let me know whatcha think.

FatFs Library

Hello everyone, I have recently been working on porting the FatFs Generic FAT File System library to an Atmega328p for use with a project I'm working on and I'm really having some issues with it.  I've tried a couple of different tutorials and walkthroughs and in the end I either get odd errors that seems will be an incredible hassle to correct, or my program compiles but the actual program won't work correctly (none of the open, write, etc functions actually work) I am writing this in Atmel Studio 6 (AVR Studio) If anyone can please help me out, or if you have ported this for the atmel mega series before and can provide your files that would be awesome Thank you

Crafting Contest Country Eligibility

I saw there was a new contest, so went to investigate. I'm from the uk so always look at the eligibility at the bottom of the right hand side. This one said US only, but when I looked at the full rules, it listed all the usual places. See snapshot. Am I reading this wrong, or does one override the other? Can I enter? Thanks, Jon.

Courses in San Francisco

Hey, i'm an Mecatronic Engineering student from Brazil, and i'm visiting my brother in San Francisco for a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if there were any cool places with interesting courses about electronics,  like arduino and different electronic components and motors, or also about building different structures, basically anything that could help me build a remote controled car for example. I have an open mind about this, i'm not entirely sure what i'm looking for, but any suggestion of places with good courses i could take a look would be very much apreciated! And for those who read everything, a treat: "What kind of ears does an engine have? Engineers!" Thank you all in advance!

Shift register too slow for multiplexing?

Hi, I'm trying to figure out working with shift registers. I bought a couple of 74HCT4094's, hooked them up through my breadboard to a small matrix with some LEDs and my Arduino. Without multiplexing everything works fine, but no matter what circuit I build (changing wires, resistors, transistors, even the Arduino code), when I start to multiplex the LEDS clearly 'flicker' (is that the correct term?). Is it possible that some shift registers are 'too slow' for multiplexing with Arduino?

Ideas for DIY solid surface kitchen counter top?

Hi all, I need to replace some counter tops in my kitchen and I love the solid surface materials like Corian, but it's also very expensive so I was wondering if we could collaborate and come up with a DIY solution. I know concrete is one option for a DIY counter top. But it's very heavy, prone to cracking and a little to industrial for my taste. Maybe someone who knows more about synthetic resins will have a suggestion. I'm imagining pouring a mixture into an upside down mold the way it's done with concrete. It would be great if we could figure out how to mold a sink into the counter too, but maybe that would add too much complexity.

Is homeopathy a proven science?

Hi again people! This is yet another question to which i have to get definitive answers.  Is Homeopathy a proven science? Alternate medicines like homeopathy, Ayurveda are so common in my country, that most people tend to believe them blindly and are ready to take "medicines" from them for all kinds of problems, from Not-really-worth-bothering stuff like common cold, to moderate stuff like diabetes, and even extreme life threatening cases like cancer. To be honest, even i didn't bother looking into them much and few years back, i thought MAYBE it does work, after all so many people take it. But in my recent years, i have developed a condition known as psoriasis, so i had to start bothering as most people force me to take these medicines, as thus far, "Allopathy" does not have treatment to this condition. But alternative medicines claim they do. i was getting a little skeptical. When i started really questioning stuff, i didn't get quite satisfactory answers. Doing a little research on my own, i have seen videos from one of my favourite intellect, Prof.Richard Dawkins. He says that homeopathy is mostly bogus. When i question this to the people around me, specially the elders, they just throw it out of the window, and tell me that i am too young to understand stuff, and people who claim things know nothing about these kind of stuff. It is the same in case of Ayurveda. How far are these claims true? Is homeopathy(Alternative medicine in general) a bogus? If that is the case, then why is it so famous? Why is the community adopting it despite all this? Or have i misunderstood the concept? Do pardon me if my question was too long :)

alternative stepper motors?

I recently tore into a couple printer-scanners looking for stepper motors. Unfortunately all I found were some DC motors that seem to be tied into some sort of sensor that acts like a step counter. Does anyone know what they are called and how to use them in place of stepper motors for a CNC machine? As a side note, I have a very limited understanding of IC function, think of me as having lived a purely analog lifestyle.

Make-to-Learn Youth Contest Questions

You must answer the following four questions in the introduction of your project to be considered in the Make-to-Learn Youth contest: 1- What did you make? (Tell the story of what you made and how it works. Why did you use the tools and materials you selected?) 2- How did you make it? (Tell us where you got the idea for the project. Did you work with anyone else? Did your plans and ideas change as you worked on the project?) 3- Where did you make it? (Home, school, somewhere else? How did this connect to other activities in your life?) 4- What did you learn? (Describe your biggest challenges and any surprises that arose during the build. What are you proudest of? If you had to do it again, what would you do differently?)

Once more soup! (otra vez sopa!) FIXED FIXED FIXED

While trying to create a new instructable, I got the message at pressing Save button. There's been a problem updating your Instructable parsererror SyntaxError: JSON.parse: bad control character in string literal The text I want to save was: While I lick my wounds after the trip I had with the conversion to gas electrical generator, and collect courage to try to make the changes suggested several virtual friends, I had to make time for other tasks. One of these was derived from chulengo construction. The case was that chulengo made useless the bulky and damaged grill that I used before, and consequently it was demolished. But I also used the grill to burn occasionally leaves, paper, cardboard and other trash. My idea is thus decreased the use of polyethylene bags, and as in any case it is highly likely that this trash be finally incinerated, or worse, will contribute to contaminate ground water. Pressing F5 does not fix the problem, this time.

I need help with an electrical schematic

I'm working on a project where you press a normally open button that lights an amber light (represents Master), this button then lights other buttons that are lit green (represents Slave). The accompanying schematic should be fairly clear and also repeats this question. What I want to have happen is when you press one Master, the corresponding Slaves light. Release it and the board goes dark. Then if you press one of the other buttons in the Slave category, it becomes the new Master and lights up other corresponding buttons. I'm sorry if it's confusing. The project is a flow chart of sub-subsystems that when completed link to a larger tab, then that tab links to another set of subsystems finally culminating to a final result.

Cannot connect to my home network unless a specific laptop is connected first

This is the strangest problem. My family has 3 laptops: a Samsung laptop (Windows 7), a HP Elitebook (Windows 8) and a Macbook pro.  All of a sudden, the HP and the Mac cannot connect to my home network unless the Samsung is connected first.  Once the Samsung connects (which it does automatically), both other devices will connect as well.  If the Samsung is turned off, I will receive an error message saying that the computer (HP or Mac) cannot connect to the internet--it will try troubleshooting (resetting the wireless adapter) but still will be unable to connect. If I turn off the Samsung, the other two laptops will stay connected, but if they are turned off, the Samsung has to be turned on and connected to the internet before they can connect.  I have spoken to the ISP provider and they cannot provide me with a solution. I have deleted and re-installed the home network on all 3 devices, but that hasn't solved the problem.  The computers are not set up on a HomeGroup.  One ISP technician told me to have all 3 computers on a Public network. (The Samsung automatically is set for Home Network.) The options for the HP windows 8 are Private or Public.  I have switched them all to Public and/or Home-Private, but that hasn't solved the problem.  (I don't understand why I should have my computers on a Public network if I am using my home ISP--I just moved to this town and am using a different internet provider--my previous ISP always said my computers should be on Home Network) I am not very computer literate but I have looked at the command prompt to see if the IPv Address was the issue. It appears to be correct--the only number that is different is the last one. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  If the Samsung laptop breaks or is taken out of the house--the other 2 computers won't ever connect! Thank you!

USB WiFi Antenna Mod

I am working on adding a helical antenna to a cheap USB WiFi adapter.  My question is where do I connect the antenna to existing circuit.  I've attached a closeup picture with three likely points.  My three main questions are: 1) Where to connect the external antenna 2) Do I disconnect the rest of the onboard antenna (my gut says yes) or just add in the new 3) What impedance will the external antenna need to match?  I assume the components between points C&B; and B&A; are for some kind of impedance matching.

Raspberry Pi (or similar) to control LED strip via commands etc?

I'm trying to achieve something which I would imagine isn't all that difficult. Basically, I would like something like a Raspberry Pi to connect to a set of LED strips.  Then via Bluetooth or WiFi I could send a command to turn them off or on from my phone. Thats it. I'd also like the same unit to power a little OLED or LCD screen that displays the time if possible. Does anyone know exactly what kit i'm going to need.  THere seems to be hundreds of different ways of doing this and I've got no idea where to start.

And it is entirely based on the phenomenon of an old forum topic being suddenly and randomly restored to the front of the board after an extended vacation to the back of the list. My topic, "Facebook for Nerds" has been one of the recent reincarnations to be affected and no matter how much it pleases me that someone new felt a need to comment on my original post, It begs the question of "why now" and "why this one"?
