Awesome site selling space age materials

If you're hurting for novel materials, do I have the site for you! It's got all these super-cool, futuristic-y weird, wacky and awesome materials made possible by science.  Between the talking tape (speaks a message without electronics!), shape memory polylmer, super elastic plastic, temperature sensitive glass (SO pretty!) and the temperature sensitive color changing fabric - I can't decide what I want most! Each product's page gives applications for it, but I'm sure ya'll don't need the suggestions...most of us work in regular plain old metal, wood, leather, plastic, electronics, etc - imagine all the extra routes you could go with some of these things as components. (No, I'm not being paid or something, I'm just excited about all the possibilities...hey, what about a contest with prizes being money to spend on this site??) As Kiteman would say - Go on... Inventables

A kind request: Google Science fair vote

I recently entered my Science Fair project in the Google Science Fair, an international science competition in which entrants can build, research, discover etc. anything they want to. For my entry, I researched on how prosthetic limbs can be controlled by thought alone and found that much of the mathematical analysis of the brainwave data had to be improved upon in order to make such a technology usable. Here is a brief synopsis, in case you were interested: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My project is, at its most general level, based upon the idea of the brain-computer interface. In this sense of the definition, anything we use to interact with machines is a brain-computer interface, including our fingers. However, amputees often face difficulties after the loss of such a vital method of interaction. Through research, I found that a current medical device, the Electroencephalograph (EEG) could be implemented as a direct brain-machine interface; in other inputs on a computer (such as a cursor) could potentially be operated by thought alone. However, I also learned that, although EEG technology has been in existence since circa 1920, it still suffers from the age-old problems of signal filtration and desired feature extraction. This means that current signal processing algorithms are not able to interpret the electrical signals exhibited by neuronal synapses very efficiently, thus making such an interface wholly impractical and inaccurate. My project sought to rectify this through the creation of custom signal processing scenarios that utilized new algorithms; specifically, the use of Linear Discriminant Analysis and Vector quantization compression/extraction methods for enhanced noise filtration and the removal of known artifacts (sources of electricity other than the brain, such as muscles). However, I decided it was not enough to run software simulations; to determine its true real-world applicability, I used a 14- channel EEG neuroheadset to gather electrical data from my own brain. I then built a prototype robotic arm with an onboard processor that would translate signals from the computer. Finally, I used the programs I created to "decipher" the incoming brainwave signals, and send corresponding messages to the robotic limb. I concluded that, by using my programs to perform the signal processing, I was able to increase the accuracy of detected brainwave patterns by about 16%. Although this may not seem like much, the brain processes hundreds of thousands of ideas simultaneously, and recognizing patterns requires a great deal of processing effort on the part of the computer. Finally, I reached an accuracy of about 91.35% using the programs I created. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further in-depth details can be seen here: http://sites.google.com/site/eegprosthetics/home Recently, after submitting my project, I was notified that I was one of the 60 semifinalists world-wide; as part of the judging process, there is also an award called the "People's Choice Award." Essentially, the public goes online and votes once in each of the 3 age groups (13-14, 15-16, 17-18) for the project they believe is the best. I am kindly asking if you would consider voting for my project for this award; I believe this project holds many potential applications in the real world other than prosthetics alone; such technology could be effectively utilized by patients with paraplegia, paralysis, or even polio. The voting process is simple: 1. Go the Google Science Fair Voting website: http://www.google.com/events/sciencefair/projects/eeg_and_prosthetics.html (for my project) 2. Click the "vote" button in the upper right-hand corner Again, thank you for your time and consideration of my project, Anand S

Corkscrew Robot - can you do it?

Here's one for the more creative engineers - a robot running on corkscrews instead of wheels or legs. Tim Lexen, an engineer in Cumberland, Wisconsin, has come up with a novel design for robots. It has a triangular body 18 centimetres on a side, capped by a round lid, and three stainless steel coils 20 cm in diameter and 40 cm long. Each coil is turned by a motor - and by activating a coil, the robot can move in the direction of the coil's axis. "It runs very well on grass, sand, gravel and other outdoor surfaces," Lexen said when he presented his work earlier this month at the IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Practical Robot Applications in Woburn, Massachusetts. However, the prototype has trouble gaining traction on surfaces like polished wood floors. Here's the thing though; Lexen's prototype is only radio-controlled.  A human operator chooses what direction to rotate which screws. Given the idea, I bet the clever folk here could not only replicate the corkscrew drive, but make it autonomous. I'd bet an Arduino or Raspberry Pi would be up to the job. Go on - imagine the kudos of beating the boffins at their own game! New Scientist article. Abstract of Lexen's work. Video of robot in action.

Why do some people have bellybuttons that are apparently stuffed with skin, while some people have bellybuttons that are, for the most part, hollow?

This is a question that has been on my mind for around three years. I have a hollow bellybutton, but when I go swimming with my friends I notice that some of them have bellybuttons that appear to be stuffed with skin and are not at the least bit hollow. Why is that? Thanks in advance.

Wow. So today I got bored and came back here after like...a year. Most of you probably won't have the faintest idea of who the hell I am, but that's only to be expected lol. I had a major nostalgia trip and decided to open a drawer and bring back some memories. I sorta scared myself with some of the strange things I had previously created...because they're rather weird to see after all this time o.O I feel like an old person now, so I'll act accordingly. Whadda all y'all kids nowadays d- I can't do this properly. Anyways, what the hell have I missed in the past year? Anything interesting or groundbreaking(After  all this time, what I think to have been cool is probably now a load of steaming crap)?

The Shaggs - "better than the Beatles"

I caught this on BBC Radio 4: The story goes, that grandmother had an insight that the sisters would become a big band. So father tried to make it happen. 5 years of practicing without musical-influences one album (1000 copies), and embarrassing performances. I've been really getting into what I can find, because it's not music as we know it... take out doing something that you want to do (they didn't) and trying to sell records, knowing what music is etc... L Shaggs are now seen as a groundbreaking outsider music group, receiving praise from mainstream artists such as Kurt Cobain and also from Frank Zappa after he called the Shaggs "better than the Beatles".

I'm disappointed by your sleazy American Apparel ads featuring half-naked women. It is gratuitous and uncalled for. As a father I am doubly disappointed because I know that my children have frequented your site as well. The thing is, I really like your site and have told people about it. Now I find myself considering blocking your site at my home and at my children's schools. Look, I'm not a prude--far from it. But your site seems to be migrating from classy to trashy, and that really disappoints me. I would expect this behavior from mens magazine sites, but I thought you folks had a little more class than that.

Little girl's bedroom with Hacked-Ikea bed

My two year old outgrew her "Princess Toddler bed" and it was time to move her to a regular bed. She has gone from Cradle, to interim playpen, to crib, to fire truck toddler bed (because it was the one with the highest sides we could find when she started jumping out of her crib at 10 months), then to princess bed.. Even though the rest of our house is decorated using modern decor, I really wanted to keep the "French" theme I did when I originally setup her nursery... Because this was her 6th bed, the thought of spending $899 and up for a bed in this category (and not even made out of wood) I got discouraged and decided to buy an inexpensive IKEA bed. When I arrived at IKEA and started looking through the options, again I decided to hold off and not buy anything. As I was leaving the store, I found various items on sale. One of the items was an unfinished bed, for $30!!!! The bed was low to the ground like we needed it. The unfinished wood was not something I wanted, but for $30 I could live with it. At home depot, I purchased decorative wood applique's for the headboard and the foot board ($12 for both). On my way to the cash register I discovered that home depot sells pre-fab unfinished table legs. These legs would make perfect posts for a bed!!! I glued the appliques, screwed and glued the legs in. Then I went online and ordered Milk Paint (non-toxic, no smell, natural paint) in cream and also in white... A few days later it arrived, and I was able to paint the entire bed in about 2 hours (with re-coats). I am very happy with the results. Her room is "a work in progress, her bed is done.

Save Instructables in a Folder

Hi, I am not sure if this has been suggested before.  I have been a member for years on this site and find the projects fantastic.  I have even built some!  I am always coming across instructables that I want to try and spend a lot of time on the site surfing and coming across great projects.  I would like to see a feature where we could add an instructable to our own "favourites" list so that we can manage them and go back to them and build them without having to add them to the web-browser favourites.  This way, we can keep a list of those 'ibles that we intend coming back to inside the website.  Perhaps we can even share that list with other users.  Just a thought. Site Update

So maybe I've got the right spot for this comment this time (Thanks, Kiteman, for the wake up), but here goes..the last time the site had an update wasn't too bad. Things were relatively easy to see and find, and the previous style had been a little cumbersome--now it's a big mishmash and confusing as hell. What is it with geeks who can't leave what works well enough alone, but have to try and fix it? (I'm looking at you here, too, Firefox.) Pay attention here folks! The project of the day humongous header at the top of the page--it's frickin' annoying!! It was good to be able to see all the projects in a row, very neat and organized, and then go to the one I'm interested in. Surely I'm not the only one? I can't get here everyday and now the different projects are extremely hard to catch up on. I'm not trying to be mean, nor am I against constructive change or fixing problems, but changing something just to be different doesn't always work. People come here to see the projects, etc., To connect on ways to do things or build things, not to see a website where someone wants to show off their building skills. Please take a poll of your readers or something and see what everyone else thinks. If I'm a minority opinion I'll just learn to lump it, but I still won't have to like it!

General New Homepage Improvements

Hey Everyone, It has recently come to my attention though the forums that many of my fellow Instructabrarians, or as caitlinsdad will have it 'Iblers, are not at all happy with the current homepage layout of the website. Now, I'll admit, I'm quite biased towards this. As a new member of the Instructables Staff, I actually got to beta test the new site a week ago and as a long time user of the site, and I quite honestly didn't see anything glaringly wrong with it. Sure it wasn't the original homepage, but I felt the white background and interchanging instructables gave it a much more "Apple-esque" feel. But, after browsing through the forums this morning, I can tell I'm slightly in the minority on this. So, I was really hoping we could start an General All Purpose Site Improvements page with constructive criticism of what you think could be improved. JamesRPatrick has already suggested what kind of things could be improved with the site, and I would really love to hear more. Rather than complain about what you don't like, please tell me what you would like to see improved with the new homepage or features you think could make it better. Look, I'm a fan of the site just like everyone else is and I've been a fan much longer than I've been working here. So if there's something on the homepage you want changed, please tell me because I want to know. As new member of the Instructables team and admin, I can't make any promises that anything can or will be changed on our homepage but I can promise you I will at least bring all of your comments to our next staff meeting. -SHIFT! Music box concept + Guitar guts = Player Guitar

Don't know if this specifically needs to go in music but, whatever. for christmas i made my brother a (somewhat poorly constructed) lap steel guitar. seriously, it wasn't that good, but it worked and it was more of a "can i do this project" kind of thing, plus he has a friend who is an ACTUAL luthier so he's going to "redo it".... anywho, i made said guitar using zither pins for the tuning pegs and it got me to thinking. with the zither pins you could theoretcially have a guitar string of any length and use the pin to set that string to any given tone on any particular scale (say the functional length of the string was only 3 inches....you could still theoretically set the tune on that string to a semi permanent desired tone). so, with a bunch of short lengths of various guage strings you could create a guitar music box (probably more of a music barrel but, whatever). now, normal music box has the tone pins (not sure what they're called...but the tuned slivers of metal) stationary along one (or more) fixed planes and a revolving "picking" drum that strikes each pin to make the tone in the order that it needs to be in a piece of music. for whatever reason. so, combine these two ideas and you get a player guitar, or a guitar based music box, whatever. so, obviously this could be acoustic or electric. my personal preference is to lean towards electric, so that's where the question comes in. a normal guitar pickup has 4, 6, or whatever magnets fixed within it's coils so that you can pickup the signal from 4, 6, or whatever strings that are strung paralell(ish) across the guitar. for the music box concept to work (as opposed to a true player guitar that plays across the strings) the individual string pieces (that are all individually tuned etc) wouldn't be able to be parallell to each other like a normal guitar. they'd either be in line on the same plane or spaced out in odd ways (i've got an odd concept for the actual construction...where the strings do the moving and the "strummers" stay put). so, does a single magnet pickup exist? that could just be wired up into the rest of a normal electric guitar's circuitry? or would i have to build such a thing from scratch (and subsequently how would i do that)? would a normal electric guitar's circuitry be able to work the same with more than 6 pickups in play (thinking of a cheap one from a pawn shop...that's what i built the slide guitar from)? also, taking song suggestions and subsequent individual string tuning plans *i do know that there are "better" ways to make a self playing guitar that uses the normal guitar form factor and robotics and such....but this seems more fun. plus, i might make it into a wind powerd thing...electric guitar windchimes anyone?

Bit of Fun- Wilhelm Scream

How many movies have you seen that contain this classic easter egg? Don't know what it is? You've probably already heard it a few times before. Every time I go to a movie I enjoy searching for this sound-clip. When I find it, I normally turn to my friend and say did you hear the Wilhelm Scream? I normally get a blank stare followed by The what?'Course I'm the one that studies and analyzes movies' camera shots, angles, etc for fun. Fact: ever wonder why you get so bored watching old movies? Nowadays in entertainment, the human brain gets bored after only five seconds. This means that shots can not be longer then five seconds without a cut, angle change, or radical camera movement. Back then, the limit was ten agonizing seconds. Try it yourself; next time you see a (relatively new) movie, count the seconds before a cut. You'll rarely get past five. In The Bourne Ultimatum, I barely got past three!

Home-Trainer-Bike "no pain no gain" video system

Hi everybody, i want to build a home trainer which connects to my computer in that way, that video will only be played when i do some exercise. my idea: - attach bike dynamo to home trainer bike - make connection to old external computer keyboard - fiddle with the software so video is played when a button is "pressed" (or activated by exercise), if the button is not pressed, the video will pause. the last point seems to be really tricky - any ideas? any alternative ideas from anyone? i do not want some on/off switch because then you could simply do two strokes on the bike and sit back and relax to watch the movie. i want a solution where only when straddling the video will play. cheers, stefan

KSAR

KSAR - Knex Standard Assault Rifle. Just as the title said, nothing special, but very good. It's a grey connector shooter, but can easily be modded to a blue rod mag. It has a great working removable magazine, good strong stock, pin guide, long fake barrel, I like the style of the sights, anyways overall it's pretty cool. But yeah, nothing special. The only 'new' is the front handle, but yeah who cares about that. I think it's really hard to add something new on an assault rifle. I mean the 'real' magazine system on guns is impossible to make on knex guns, and I can't think of something else what would be a big difference. Full-auto or semi-auto of course, but that's just hard to make it on a good-loking assault rifle. Tell me what you think.

Patchwork fabric paving concept.

On Freshome, via NOTCOT; Juliana Santacruz Herrera decided the streets of Paris were too gloomy and needed a little fresh touch. With these in mind she came up with the concept of decorating the potholes of the city using colorful strips of fabric. These were placed randomly in shallow breaks and cracks, creating a fun and colorful change in the landscape. The artist’s visual intervention brings a happy touch to the gray streets of Paris and creates a fun and appealing contrast with the dark cement. But what if we were to take this idea further? If you like how this photos look, perhaps you could use them as a source of inspiration when it comes to patching up your own courtyard, patio and so on. Sounds practical? So, how could it be made (reasonably) practical? Maybe a pourable clear or translucent resin?  What do you think?

Showing featured flag on photos and videos

When a "Step by step" Instructable become featured , you see a flag in right part of the steps that means this instructable is featured . But when a "Video" or "Photos" instructable become featured , you can't find out this is featured or not . I know you can see featured star in "editors' picks" page or author profile , but when you open that instructable do you see any thing that say this instructable is featured ? The "Videos" and "Photos" instructables need a change to show they are featured or they aren't . For example instructables can show featured flag in a corner of picture or video .

Wonderful Site

First up, let me say sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum, but I looked and couldn't really find anywhere else for it. If it's wrong, show me to the dunce's corner while a mod moves it to the appropriate place. I just want to say what an amazing site this is. I stumbled in while looking for a knitting pattern for a Pokemon toy (on instructions from my youngest offspring). I quickly got sidetracked in my search, and soon found myself joining because I wanted to comment on something I found. I love the concept of sharing ideas with other people. Among other things, I make dollhouse miniatures and the local club I belong to is big on the idea that if you know how to, then share your knowledge for others to enjoy. So a few days after joining, I now find myself creating an instructible of my own to share and hopefully (if it turns out) to enter into one of the competitions. Norma

Recent entries should come first on Home Page

I feel that the newest published Instructables should automatically come up first. That way they will get more views,  because people will know that they havn't seen them before. If you want to see what was the most popular (or other), then you can select it. The ones that have already gained an amount of approval will continue to do so because they already get most prominance, and people are likely to view them because someone else has deemed them worthy. Thanks for looking.

How to present this old branding iron

Hi, I have an old horse branding iron from our past family ranch and I want to give it to my son as an hierloom. Problem is it is about 2 feet tall of quite heavy iron which now has a little rust on it.. I was thinking of chroming it on a wall plaque but the chrome is very expensive. Any ideas what I could do to make it look nice? Thanks oz

PDFs of Instructables

Are PDFs associated with an Instructable updated when an author finds an error and corrects it?  If so, how often? Thank you.

tips on buying a microscope, looking for aa good used deal. ecoli, parasitesl, arva eggs,

I want to buy a compound microscope, i want to be able to check for ecoli and parasite eggs. i figure 2000 power may work, correct me if not. would really like to be able to monitor or take pics via pc, but may be out of  price range.  looking at $300 us tops ,unless a super good used deal for around $500 comes by. i never took biology ,well since high school, so am out of ouch of what i want. ebay has new ones of a chinese brand, have to look up the name, but prefer used for better deal unless people know that the new ebay scopes A??? are a good deal. are scopes up-gradable , meaning, could i get a scope and add the camera attachment later? thanks, pure noob here, i know i dony want clips, and i know certain lights = cheaper from my research.
